H ypertension or High BP is a very common chronic disease particularly found among the middle aged or older population. About 65 crore Indians are hypertensive but most don’t show any symptoms. About 75% diabetes sufferers also have hypertension, this combination of diabetes and hypertension increases the risk factor for kidney and heart diseases. Therefore, diabetics need to control their blood pressure in addition to their sugar levels. To highlight the risk of hypertension and to enhance awareness about it, the Diabetes Centre at Vaatsalya Hospital, Hubli conducted a camp on Hypertension on January 26, 2012. Dr. Chandrasekhar Patil, Medical Director, Vaatsalya Hospital, Hubli, educated the attendees about how to manage hypertension. Blood pressure is a measure of the force against the wall of the arteries as the heart pumps blood through the circulatory system and it is indicated by two values written one above the other.The larger number is called “Systolic pressure” and the smaller number “Diastolic pressure”. When the blood pressure values exceed 140/90, then that person is considered as “hypertensive”. Both systolic and diastolic pressures generally increase with age; habits such as smoking, drinking, and consuming food containing high fat and/or high salt will increase blood pressure. Diabetes sufferers should maintain blood pressure below 130/80. Dr. Patil recommends the following guidelines for maintaining blood pressure: 1. Walk 30 minute a day 2. Reduce weight if you are overweight 3. Consume more vegetables and fruits 4. The sodium in salt increases BP so reduce salt intake. Sodium intake can also be reduced by switching to a low sodium salt. 5. Avoid deep-fried food items such as chips, mixture, poori and vada 6. Avoid drinking and smoking 7. Bridging the gap – Hospital Facility Tour In-house training programs

Gadag : Children from Bipin Chikkatti Montessori School visited Vaatsalya Hospital, Gadag on 18th February 2012. More than 80 children below the age of 5 were given a tour of the hospital by the staff. The children interacted with the hospital staff and the patients.

Hassan : A hospital facility tour was conducted at Vaatsalya Hospital, Hassan on 3rd March 2012. The Nursing Superintendent, Lokesh took the patient attenders on a tour of the hospital and introduced them to the various services available at Vaatsalya Hospital, Hassan.

Anantapur : Vaatsalya Hospital, Anantapur conducted a training program for the nursing staff on 24th February 2012. The topic for the program was “Drugs – Action, Reaction and Dosage”. More than 30 Nurses were involved in this program conducted by Unisankyo Ltd.

The program was conducted by Varalaxmi, Nursing Superintendent, and was attended by majority of the nursing staff.Vizianagaram : A basic skills training for the nursing staff was conducted at Vaatsalya Hospital, Vizianagaram on 13th March 2012. The nurses were taught the need for effective and proper communication with

Narasannapet : Vaatsalya Hospital, Narasannapet conducted a training program for the nursing department. They were given training on Fire and Non-Fire emergencies, Staff rights and responsibilities, Patient rights and responsibilities and

the patients. Dr.Anant Sagar, Consultant – Peadiatric Surgeon conducted the training which was attended by over 40 nursing staff.

Mandya : Vaatsalya Hospital, Mandya conducted a basic nursing training for their nursing staff on 10th March 2012. It was conducted by Dr. Somsundar and Dr. Veena, Consultant Anesthetists and attended by over 30 nurses.

Gulbarga - A health check up camp was conducted on 3rd March 2012 at MB Nagar Police Station in Gulbarga. More than 40 police personnel underwent the tests at the police station premises. Sub Inspector Mr. Sanjeev Kumar, MB Nagar police station expressed his gratitude to Vaatsalya Hospital, Gulbarga for conducting this camp.

Narasannapeta: More than 200 Anganwadi teachers from over 180 villages in Srikakulam district were invited to Vaatsalya Hospital, Narasannapeta on 6th March 2012 for an awareness program. Dr. Golvi Mohan spoke about “Household emergency management and Children’s health”.

Hubli: An awareness talk on “Labour Analgesia” was conducted on 14th March 2012 by Dr. Vijaykumar Zalaki and Dr. Krishna Baradol, Consultant Anesthetist, Vaatsalya Hospital, Hubli.

Hassan: Vaatsalya Hospital, Hassan conducted an awareness talk on Anemia for the hospital patient attenders on 15th March 2012. The talk was conducted by Dr. Bharathi Rajashekar and was attended by over 50 people.

Gulbarga: A general health check up was organised by Vaatsalya Hospital, Gulbarga for the drivers of the Basweshwar Hospital Auto Stand on 17th February 2012. More than 20 drivers attended the camp and availed the free services.

Mysore: Vaatsalya Hospital, Mysore provided free 24 hours emergency helpline at Srikanteshwara Temple (Nanjundeshwara Temple), Nanjangud, during its Maha Shivarathri Celebrations on 20th and 21st February 2012. A dedicated team from Vaatsalya Hospital, Mysore comprising of doctors, nurses and paramedical staff provided free emergency helpline facilities to the devotees along with free medicines.

Hubli: Vaatsalya Hospital, Hubli conducted a General Paediatric Camp on 24th February 2012. It was conducted by Dr. Mahesh Holeyannavar, Consultant Paediatrician, and few nursing staff. It was attended by over 25 people.

Ongole: Vaatsalya Hospital, Ongole conducted a free urology camp on 28th February 2012. Dr. K Noel John, Consultant Urologist - Vaatsalya Hospital, Ongole examined all the 40 patients who attended the camp. A free urine test was conducted and a 50% discount on abdomen ultrasound scanning was given for all the patients who attended the camp.

Malur: Vaatsalya Hospital, Malur conducted an awareness program for the students of Taranga ITI college on 24th February 2012. Dr. Sunitha Prabhu, Medical Director and Consultant Gynaecologist spoke to the students about “Hygiene and Basic Health Awareness” and “Importance of First Aid Treatment”. It was attended by over 130 students and was well appreciated.

The slogan for this year’s campaign was “Donate - Kidneys for Life – Receive”.Vaatsalya was proud to be a partner with World Kidney Day by organizing events like free kidney disease detection camps, health awareness

talk regarding kidney disease, Walkathon for public awareness and Felicitation of kidney donors.Vaatsalya Hospital, Bijapur has been celebrating world kidney day. since its inception in 2008. This year’s celebration was special because of the outstanding initiative taken by Dr. Raveendra Madraki (Consultant Nephrologist and Medical Director, Vaatsalya Hospital, Bijapur) to felicitate the kidney donors in Bijapur region. Vaatsalya felicitated - Shrihsail Tamagond, Shivappa Padaganur, Arjunsing Rajput, Md.Sharif Biradar, Sadanand Hulyal, Raj Ahmed Gadagalav, Munaf Lahori, Basavaraj Talawar,

Vaatsalya Observed World Kidney Day

The inspiration to dedicate a day to women was initiated in the

1900s, a time when women oppression and inequality was at its peak. It gave women the courage to become vocal and active in campaigning for change.The first National Women’s Day was celebrated on 28th February 1909 in the United States of America.

19th March 1911 and celebrated internationally in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. More than a million women and men attended rallies to campaign for women’s right to work, vote, to hold public office and to end discrimination.Towards the end of the First World War, the Russian women began a

strike in response to the death of over two million soldiers in the war. The strike that lasted four days resulted in the government granting women the power to vote. The commencement of this strike on the 8th of March is today marked as the International Women’s Day world over.The United Nations’ International

Women’s Day theme for 2012 was “Empower Rural Women – End Hunger and Poverty”.International Women’s Day was celebrated across all the 15 Hospitals in the Vaatsalya Network, including the Head Office in Bangalore on 8th March 2012. Brig. Arujah, Head of Nursing Services at

Vaatsalya prepared a presentation about womens day which was presented across Vaatsalya Hospitals.A cervical cancer screening camp was conducted at Vaatsalya Hospital, Vizianagaram by Dr. Padma Kumari, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. More than 20 women availed the services at the camp.

chase it away. Suddenly, the animal attacked him and slashed him on his stomach. The bear had managed to break two rib bones with its sharp claws, which had caused the stomach to come out. The villagers rushed to his aid hearing him scream and admitted him in Vaatsalya Hospital, Narasannapeta. Dr. Golivi Mohan, Medical Director and Surgeon along with the paramedical staff performed a high risk surgery for three hours. Sriramulu slowly recovered and was discharged ten days after the attack.Forest officials, MRO, Police men and MLA & MP visited Vaatsalya Hospital and appreciated the sincerity and efforts of the doctors, the paramedical staff and the entire Vaatsalya team.

Pulse Polio is an immunization campaign established by the

government of India in 1995-96 to eradicate Poliomyelitis (polio) in India by vaccinating all children under the age of five years against the polio virus. This project involves fighting poliomyelitis with the help of large scale immunisation programmes, co-operating with various international institutions, state governments and Non-Governmental Organisations.Vaatsalya is proud to be a part of this immunisation program. Vaatsalya conducted a 4 day door-to-door pulse polio campaign which was carried out in various areas including Local Bus Stands, Slums, Anganwadi, etc. in association

Venkateswara Rao was on his way to work in his paddy field

in Gottupalli, a small village 20 kms from Srikakulam, when he heard the village people screaming and running in the other direction. A bear had entered their paddy fields and was heading to their village. Venkateswara Rao also turned back to warn his family of the danger. He was heading back out towards the field when a hand suddenly slapped him on the back. He turned to find the bear behind him ready to strike again. Venkateswara Rao held both its hands trying to fight it, but the bear became more aggressive and bit him. Venkateswara Rao lost his balance and fell back. The bear struck him 3 more times on his face before running away.

Out of fear, none of the villagers helped him, nor did anyone take him to a hospital. Few minutes later, Venkateswara Rao held his face and started towards the hospital. Looking at him struggle, the villagers quickly ran to his help and took him to Vaatsalya Hospital, Narasannpeta. Dr. Golivi Mohan and the paramedical staff provided emergency treatment in the casualty and performed reconstructive surgery of the face.Venkateswara Rao’s wounds healed quickly and he was discharged within a week of the assault. He and his family remain ever grateful to Dr. Golivi Mohan and the entire team of Vaatsalya for giving him a new life, especially when he had lost all his hopes on seeing another day.
