SOUTH AFRICA SOCIETY FOR PE^CE AND FRIENDSHIP WITH THE SOVIET UNION

Our attention has b^en drawn to a aerial which is currently being published in your magazine, under the title " I Killed Stalin ."

'He wish to express the most emphatic protest against your publication of this most shocking and disgraceful serial which, using the degraded technique of sensational fiction, is nothing less than an open incitement and provocation to terrorism, directed against -the heaH of a friendly State, and a piece of blatant warmongering.

We would remird you, Sir. that the Union of South Africa maintains diplomatic relations with the U .S .S .R . Our two countries are at peace, they are fe llo w o f Ha t J nna« r e p rM o n —tativea meet on a friendly basis on the field of sport, and at other international gatherings. That is the object of this Sooiety, ar.l we believe, of all men and women of good w ill .

Suoh outrageous provocations and glorifications of political a’ssissiaation are unheard of^in peace time, or even for that matter, amoag elvilised nations, in time of war. V . r h N )

On Tuesday, February 9 , a public meeting held under the auspices of

our Society was raided by poliae, who barred the exits and prevented anyone from leaving until they had furnished their names and addresses. The polioo offioer in charge stated that this action was being taken in ternsof the Suppression of Communism Act.

Y7e wish, Sir , to protest most emphatically against this conduct.

The relaxation of international tensions and the promotion of a

better understanding between "East" aral "West" are widely acknowledged

today as being of vital importance in preserving world peace: a question

upon which, in this atomic age, human survival itself may well depend.

This truth v.as reoognised by the Dominion Prime Ministers at their

meeting last June in London, when, according to the official oonmunique, they:

"reviewed the state of relations with the Soviet Union acd

agreed that no opportunity should be lost of composing, or

at least easing, tho differences which at present divide the world."

This view was confirmed by the Prime Minister, Dr. Malan, in

Parliament on August 11, 1953-

The objects of our Society, as is well known, are to promote peaoe-

ful and friandly relationships not only upon the diplomatic level, but

also upon the cultural and ccnmeroiol levels, between our country and the

Union of Soviet Sooialist Republios. T7e believe that such relationships

can best be oultivated on the basis of mutual understanding and objootive

information.

The aotivities of our Society are directed solely towards the furtherance of these objectives, and are in no tray linked with the promotion of Communism or any other political ideology. The Society has carried out these lawful activities openly and publicly for many years.

In the light of all these cirounatanoes the conduct of the police at our meeting must be characterised as completely unwarranted and an outrag

eous abuse of authority. To demand the names and addresses of private

citizens attending a lawful public meeting is , we believe, an unprecedented

action in this country. It is a preoedent which, i f it passes unohallenged and is followed in the future, can only lead to the most serious incursions

upon the traditional and universally acknowledged rights of freedom of

speech and conscience, for it constitutes a form of intimidation which

oannct but doter a section of thq people from seeking independent views

and information.

We'subnit, further, that the work of this Society at the present

time is of vital public importance in furthering the causo of world peace

and goodwill between nations, and in advocating the extension of trade

arel economic relations Which can bo of great benefit to all sections of

our population in the difficult times v/hich we fear lie ahead.

We therefore respectfully request that you furnish us with an

immediate explanation of the reasons for the conduct of the polioc &t

our meeting, and an undertaking that in future the proceedings of this

Society will not be subjected to interference by the police, least cf

ell such rude and unwarranted interference as we suffered last Tuesday.

Dear £-~— —

In recent months the widespread support given by the most diverse circles to the idea of settling international differences by negotiation, and the growing public support in favour of a meeting of the Five Great Powers have brought hopes of a relaxation of international tension.

Support for the negotiated settlement of all outstanding problems has come from leading statesmen. For example, on May 11th 1953 Sir Winston Churchill stated: I must make it plain that in spite of all the u ncertainties and confusion in which world affairs are plunged I believe a confcrence on the highest level should take place between the leading powers without long delay ," On March 15th 1953 Hr Malenkov said: At the present time there is not a single controversial or unsettled question which could not be solved by peaceful means on the br.3i$ of mutual agreement of the interested countries. This goes for our relations with all states, including also our relations wit., the United States of America. ' In April, President Eisenhower made an important speech: "We seek, thoughout Asia as throughout the world, a peace that is true and total. Out of this can crow a still wider task - the achieving of Just political settlements for the other serious and specific issues between the world and the Soviet Union. None of these issues great or small, is insoluble - given only the "/ill to re-pcct the rights of all nations." In June, President Auriol stated: I have said before the United Nations Assenbly that i f , . . . responsible statesmen were to meet f>ce to face in order to declare themselves on specific questions with a w ill, confirmed by their actions, tc lead to clear, sincere and lasting solutions in order to sa™ tne peoples from hate, - fear and poverty, France'would^joyiully wol- come their undertaking and support their efforts. ^im lar attitudes have been expressed by Chou Sn-I-ai, Pandit Nehru,Pope Pius X I I , Adl?i Stevenson, Sir Hartley Shrv;cross many

others.

Yet agreement is proving difficult on many questions of vital

importance to the peace of the world.

The World Peacc Council, which has conducted campaigns for the outlawing of the Atom Bomb, the settlement of international differences by negotiation and not by recourse to war tnd for a Big Five Agreement, believes that there is an urgent need for renewed efforts for the peaceful settlement of international

' problems still in dispute.* > •

Dear -sir, ’

In your lest "unday*s weekly feature "Church and People" under the subject of "The Communist Issue"I believe the Padre hss over-siirplied and there misrepresented the issue as between the Church end Communism, end consequently the nature of that struggle

in the .ast- .est tension, and the developing situations within .soviet, Union find New T)6niocr*acic3 #

'.hatever else may be said concerning the present nature of the conflict of Christianity in its present Vestern Pattern anc CoB.i:.unism, to state categorically that "The Anglican Church has, however, in common with, other Churches, recognised the utter inco&.patibilitv of Christianity and Communism", is to dra* the line of an issue which makes confusion more conf"> anaed.

Are the majority of Churcl folk in' all the Churches unambiguously clear in their rttitade to Communism ? It is granted th; t mMiy <• re confused, and more are afraia. host fo lk ,I agree,fe r n ther than understand the issue. And this attitude is hardly a helpful and c:-£fctive one to adopt in a position where there should be'a fruitful tension between conflicting opinions' ox-- i 3 3 ue3 .The forces at w >rr. in the world to-day have the capacity to destroy mankinc, or to be the integrating factors in the new Society of Mankind*

T) e Padres reference to the notoriety of the "Red Dean" as having been such an emb^ri^ssmant to Anglicans (not all by any means) is certainty regretted- in some quarters. The "?eJ Dear.5' hr.s consistently refused to recogni3 auy "Iron Curtain", a commendable virtue in a Christian man whose religion nows the universal nature of the Christian "ospel. ' is contact** with ti e a arches and countries oi the ,iov£Jt TJr»ior, and the Kew Democracies is o*’ the utnoat v lur at this time. The Dean like many another has be "irhtly concerned with the way tie ,est.*--n "i.ur ! 1 33 continually sanctified th.e political and social atatu3 quo.

Christianity has become an ambiguous -vord, a general term, and the carrier of ..jcI. a c infusion of meaning that it is bard to mane it adequ«te to tl 0 purposes of human speech an . writing without a long and radical (root) redefinition.
