Bicycle lockersTo minimise the number of cars in the city, Groningen has five P+R sites. You can use these sites to park your car and continue your journey by bicycle or bus.

Private and company bicycle lockers can be rented for just € 109.00 a year at all of Groningen's P+R sites.

You can leave your bicycle there in the knowledge that it is safe and protected from the weather. Employers are able to rent several spaces in a bicycle locker for their employees. Each locker has 32 spaces.

Season tickets for a self-service bicycle locker at the P+R sites can be obtained from the 'Loket Parkeren' at Harm Buiterplein 1 in Groningen.

GroningenCycling city placed on the mapAs early as in the seventies, Groningen decided to clear the way for pedestrians and cyclists in its inner city. The asphalt around the City Hall was removed and cars were banned from the old centre within the ring of canals. Forty years have now passed and we are still very happy with the measures taken at the time. Nevertheless we are perfectly aware of the need to make new choices; choices that may be more drastic than what we are used to so far.

Groningen is a cycling city to the core. For young and old the bicycle is by far the most popular means of transport in this city. Cycling is in our DNA - we are proud of it and definitely aim to keep it that way.

This map provides a practical overview of fast cycling routes and free-of-charge bicycle parking and storage facilities. At the same time it gives you tips that are meant to contribute to your own enjoyment and safety as well as that of all other visitors to our beautiful city.

Bicyclestorage facilitiesPeople in Groningen are cyclists. Over half of all local trips are made by bicycle. That number is steadily increasing, which greatly adds to accessibility, health and the environment. This is why we are keen to make a clear path for cyclists by means of fast cycling lanes, preferential treatment when it comes to right of way, and free parking facilities.

Proper storage is vital, as it protects against theft and at the same time ensures that bicycles do not cause a nuisance to other visitors to the inner city. For this reason we have provided several places where bicycles can be parked free of charge: Near the Main Railway Station, UMCG and the inner city.

The bicycle storage facilities in the inner city are being extended with a new facility at Nieuwe Markt, close to Forum Groningen. This modern bicycle storage facility offers spaces for 1,200 bicycles. You are not allowed to leave your bicycle outside the storage facilities in the Nieuwe Markt area.

Park your bicycle sensiblyAt some locations, for example at the train stations and in the inner city, bicycles parked outside the special storage facility are likely to cause a nuisance or even danger to other people. For that reasons, bicycles are sometimes removed from these places. Your bicycle will also be taken away if you leave it at a train station for more than 12 days.

These bicycles are taken to the AFAC Fietsdepot Groningen. Here you can collect your bicycle on payment of € 25.00 (PIN only - no cash). Bicycles remain stored here for at least four weeks.

If your bicycle has been removed, go to www.groningen.nl/parkeren and click on 'fiets kwijt' (bicycle lost). Under 'verloren of gevonden' (lost and found) you will see whether your bicycle is at the AFAC Fietsdepot. If not, you are advised to report the matter to the police at www.politie.nl/themas/diefstal

OV-bicycleThe OV-bicycle is the no-fuss rental bicycle for the last leg of your journey. In Groningen you can rent an OV-bicycle at all railway stations and several P+R sites. The bicycles are either in a supervised bicycle parking facility or in a self-service bicycle locker so that you can use your OV-bicycle 24/7 to continue your journey.

You can get a season ticket online from OV-fiets.nl. With this ticket you can rent an OV-bicycle for one or more days at any OV-bicycle point in the Netherlands.WELCOME TO
