PASS OR RUN? Back in the Vikings’ Division II days, there were a number of crazy promo-tions, including the fans calling plays for one possession each game. Here, in a game from the early ‘90s, the crowd definitely wants to pass.

The Vikings were Oregon Collegiate Conference Champions under Head Coach Jerry Lyons (second from right, dark jacket) in 1963. PSU went 4-0 to win its first conference champion-ship of any kind. The Vikings won the OCC again in 1964.

ortland State University will embark on its 69th season of football in the year 2015. The previous 68 seasons have seen remarkable change and growth as the university itself blossomed from a

two-year extension center in the 1940s to a four-year college in the 50s, reached university status in 60s and by the turn of the century became the state of Oregon’s largest and most diverse institu-tion of higher education. Viking athletics began in a primitive form during the early days of the extension center in the 1940s, then grew to compete in the Oregon Collegiate Conference in the 1950s and 60s. PSU became an NCAA College Division member in the mid-1960s, then evolved into a NCAA II program and finally a NCAA 1-AA program in the late 90s (PSU also competed at the 1-AA level from 1978-80). Portland State, which played as an independent during much of its history, was a member of the NCAA II Western Football Conference from 1982 to 1992, then joined the Big Sky Conference in 1996. All along the way, the growth of the Viking football program has paralleled that of the University and its Athletics Department.

VANPORT: THE EARLY YEARS OF VIKING FOOTBALL Although little is recorded from the early years of Viking football, the Vanport Extension Center (PSU in its formative years) first fielded a football team in 1947. The Viking pro-gram, led by Athletic Director Joe Holland through the first eight years, com-peted mainly against small colleges, junior colleges and military bases. Vanport, a two-year school at the time, was 1-8 in its first season. Its first win came in the season’s final game against Sand Point Naval Air Station, 36-7. Vanport had its first winning season under Holland in 1949, going 5-4 with wins over Wenatchee, Clark and Olympic Junior Colleges, as well as Oregon Tech and Tongue Point Naval Station.

named Darrel “Mouse” Davis. An assistant coach at Portland State, Davis took over as Head Coach in 1975 following the departure of Ron Stratten. Behind his revolution-ary new “Run-and-Shoot” offense (developed in the late 1960s at Hillsboro (OR) HS) and a strong-armed quarterback named June Jones, Davis led the Viking program to new heights - an 8-3 record, including a perfect 5-0 home mark. The Run-and-Shoot employed a pass-heavy, multiple-receiver offense that confused defenses. In 1975, PSU scored a school-record 366 points (33.2 ppg) and passed for 3,979 yards - and that was just the beginning. Under Davis, the Viking program churned out five straight seasons of more than 4,000 passing yards, with four more winning records, per game offensive numbers in the vicinity of 500 yards, and a pair of All-American quarterbacks. Jones and later Neil Lomax dazzled their opponents - and often humiliated them on the scoreboard - scoring over 50 points 14 times during those years. In 1980 alone, PSU put up winning scores that boggled the mind: 93-7 vs. Cal Poly Pomona,

Vanport, which was originally located in the community of Vanport in North Portland, moved to its downtown location in 1952 and became a four-year degree granting institution in 1955. It also became known as Portland State College.

SMALL COLLEGE FOOTBALL Ralph Davis took over as head coach in 1955 as Portland State began competing exclusively at the small college level. The move to a more con-sistent - and tougher - schedule proved challeng-ing to the emerging college athletic program. The

Vikings did not have a winning season from 1954 to 1962

and had four different coaches. Jerry Lyons was

head coach for the 1963 season and led Portland State College to its best record to date: 6-2. However, follow-

ing a .500 season in 1964, Portland State did not see another winning year until 1969 under Don

Read - the same year that the school achieved university

status. At this point, PSU had become an NCAA member, playing a formidable - and regional - schedule, featuring teams from Washington, Idaho, Montana and California. As the Viking program continued to move up its level of competition, it continued to struggle, managing just one more winning season through the mid-1970s. But, what Portland State Univer-sity followers didn’t know is they were about to witness a revolution in football and the fortunes of its football program.

RUN AND SHOOT In its first 28 seasons of football, Portland State had five winning seasons and two seasons at .500. In the following 27 years, PSU would have 19 winning seasons and prove to become one of the most innovative and explosive offensive football programs at any level. 105-0 vs. Delaware State and 75-0 vs. Weber State. In the win over Delaware State, Lomax tossed a school-record seven touchdown passes - in the first quarter. Lest football observers think the Vikings were running up the score, consider that Lomax only played half of that game, about the same amount in similar blowouts. The innova-tive offense devised by Davis was simply more than many college defenses could handle. In his six seasons, Mouse compiled a 42-24 record (.636), easily the best of the nine coaches during PSU’s first 34 years of football. Junes, Lomax and Davis all took their re-markable talents to the National Football League following their time at PSU. But they, more than anyone, put the Viking football program on the

map. Remarkably, Davis came back to be the Vi-kings offensive coordinator in 2007 and 2008, and to nobodies surprise, the Vikings’ led the nation in passing both seasons.

DEVELOPING A FIRM FOOTING AT DIVISION II

Although Portland State had become an NCAA member many years prior, the

Mouse Davis era continued the transient, independent schedule of the Viking program. Coinciding with Don Read’s return as Head Coach at Portland State in 1981, the Viking program became ingrained as

an NCAA II-level institution. Unfortunately, at that time, financial issues threatened many of PSU’s athletic programs. Football was not immune. While a number of lower-profile sports were dropped in 1981 as a cost-cutting measure, among those being considered for elimination were men’s basketball and football. Finally, it was deemed that the struggling men’s basketball program would be dropped (it was reinstated in 1996) and football would play on. For Read, the challenges were once again great as Portland State tried to maintain its bal-ance as an athletic program as well as a football program. At the NCAA II level, PSU was somewhere in the middle. Not small college, but not quite big-time either. Then in 1982, Portland State made a move that helped recreate some identity for the program by joining the Western Football Confer-ence. For the first time since the 1960s, PSU would compete in a conference, developing a consistent schedule and rivalries. Although the member teams of the WFC morphed throughout the 1980s and into the early 90s, PSU had a home. In 1984, Read led the Vi-kings to its first winning season as a WFC member and since 1980 as the Vikings went 8-3. Although Read moved on to coach at the University of Montana in 1986, he restarted a tradition of Viking football that would lead to six WFC championships over a span of nine years. And he made way for another Portland State football coach with a funny nickname.

POKEY Following the dissolution of the United States Football League (USFL) and the Portland Breakers franchise, Ernest “Pokey” Allen needed a job. As a coach with the Breakers’ team and many previous seasons at the collegiate level, Pokey - with his offbeat, humorous personality - seemed to be a good fit at a less-than-conventional

during his four-year career (1977-80). He was later inducted into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame and the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.

university like Portland State. Once the PSU administration hired him in 1986 he proved them correct. Allen led the team to a respectable 6-5 record in his first season. But that was just an appetizer for the football-hungry Viking fans. Over the next six seasons, PSU would win five Western Football Conference titles, reach the NCAA II title game twice (1987 and 1988), complete three 11-win seasons and become one of the most dominant Division II football programs in the nation. The Vikings went 10-5 in playoff games during that era as Allen compiled a 63-26-2 record over seven seasons, establishing the best winning percentage of any coach at PSU (.708). More than just the football though, Allen brought the Vikings attention through his quirky personality and PSU’s goofy promotional stunts. Allen could be seen riding elephants, making

Tony Mims set a Portland State record with 405 career tackles from 1974-77.

astronomical predictions, betting his paycheck against that of the school newspaper sports edi-tor’s paycheck, and allowing fans to call plays - all in the name of selling tickets. It worked. Portland State football became a hot ticket as a result of its success on the football field and national prominence, Allen’s crazy pro-motions and the lack of success during that time of the state’s major college football programs. PSU averaged over 10,000 fans per game for the first time in 1988. That trend continued over the next seven years as Portland State was one of the top-drawing schools in the nation at the NCAA II level.

WALSH LEADS THE VIKINGS TO A NEW LEVEL OF PLAY When Pokey Allen left PSU after the 1992 season to become Head Coach at Boise State, the Viking team was a top-ten caliber program. New Head Coach Tim Walsh (who was hired at Christ-mas of that year in part because of leading his Sonoma State program to a win over the Viking juggernaut the previous season) picked up the mantle successfully. Walsh took the Vikings right back to the playoffs in 1993, and again in ‘94 and ‘95, winning 25 games in his first three seasons. By the mid-90s, however, the ever-changing status of Portland State University and its athletics program was at another crossroads. The Western Football Conference had disbanded after 1992 as member schools moved to other conferences. Again, the Vikings were an independent, an increasingly difficult position to be in in the world

of collegiate athletics. Portland State was traveling to all parts of the country for games and found it increasingly difficult to bring “name” schools to Portland for games against such a dominant team. In 1995, the university and its athletic program determined that the best move for Portland State would be to the Division I level. An opening existed in the Big Sky Conference as Idaho and Boise State were moving out, and all

of PSU’s programs could benefit from playing a regional schedule against similar-sized schools at a “big-time” level. That meant 1-AA football for Portland State in 1996. Walsh and his football pro-gram probably had the most chal-lenging move to make of anyone at PSU. The Vikings scholarship level was in the mid-30s at that time, but they would be compet-ing with schools that had in excess of 60 scholarships. Adding to the difficulty was Walsh’s deci-sion to redshirt a host of talented freshman in the first season (a move that would later reap great rewards), leaving the Vikings with an active team of approximately 20 scholarship players. As expected, Portland State suffered in the early going, but gradually built the program up at the 1-AA level making progress each year. PSU was 3-8 in 1996, 4-7 in 1997, 5-6 in 1998, then

Pokey Allen was, well... a free spirit. He rode elephants, warned of impending meteor showers, offered red-hot football tickets, played a cowboy... and coached the Vikings to 63 wins and six playoff appear-ances in seven seasons from 1986 to 1992.

leaped forward to 8-3, 8-4, 7-4 as the program - and those freshmen - matured. PSU made its first NCAA 1-AA playoff appearance in 2000 and narrowly missed bids in 1999 and 2001.

Now starting its 18th season as a Big Sky Conference member, the Portland State pro-gram - with near the full complement of 63 1-AA scholarships - fields a national caliber program that competes in one of the toughest conferences and with one of the toughest nonconference schedules in the country. Walsh’s steady hand at the helm of the Viking ship was a key. In 14 seasons as a head coach, Walsh was the longest tenured football coach in PSU history. He coached the most games (158) and won the most (90) of any coach in Viking football history, despite the rebuilding process at the 1-AA level. In the 21 seasons that Pokey Allen and Tim Walsh led the Viking program, PSU had 17 winning teams. Portland State football had a 153-94-2 record during that span.

“YOU’RE GONNA LOVE THIS...” The addition of former NFL Head Coach Jerry Glanville as the Vikings’ new head coach in 2007 brought a different spark to Portland State and the Park Blocks. Glanville’s mantra of “You’re gonna love this...” referred to the attitude he

brought to Portland State upon his hire on Feb. 28, 2007 and the brand of football his Viking team would play. Remarkably, Glanville brought back the excitement of Run-and-Shoot football as well, as former Head Coach Mouse Davis served as the offensive coordinator for two seasons. The Vikings moved the ball, but struggled to win. In fact, a 73-68 loss to Weber State on Oct. 27, 2007 set an NCAA record for most points (141) and touchdowns (20) in a regulation game. Freshman quarterback Drew Hubel even tied Viking legend Neil Lomax’s record with nine touchdown passes in one game - and it was Hubel’s first career start. Unfortunately, the highlights of the Glanville era were limited. He lasted only three seasons as the Vikings went 9-24 - their worst stretch of football since 1981-83.

BRINGING THE FAMILY BACK Portland State hired Nigel Burton, a former Tim Walsh assistant in late 2009 to revitalize the program. Burton became the first African American Head Coach in the Big Sky Conference. His primary objectives - in addition to bringing a winning program back to Portland State - includ-ing re-integrating a proud and successful alumni back into the Viking “football family.” In his second season, Burton turned a struggling program that had four straight losing records to a 7-4 record. The five-game improve-ment in the win column was the best in the Big Sky and one of the best in the nation. Once again, Portland State was back on the map in NCAA I FCS football. Burton’s tenure lasted five seasons. He

was fired after compiling a 21-36 overall record. However, he produced some of the top Vikings in program history, including All-Americans Zach Brown and Kyle Loomis, Rimington Award winner Cornelius Edison, NFL star tight end Julius Thomas and Super Bowl XLVIII Champion DeShawn Shead.

BARNYBALL - WHAT EVERY-ONE WAS WAITING FOR Bruce Barnum was given a one-year interim contract to replace Burton in 2015 and, frankly, not a lot was expected of the Viking football team. But Barnum instilled his version of “BarnyBall” on the Park Blocks and it worked like a charm. BarnyBall was described as tough, blue-collar, fundamental football and that was exactly what the Vikings played, bringing tough defense, forc-ing turnovers, moving the offense efficiently and taking advantage of every opportunity. The result was an amazing season - the best in Portland State’s Division I history. But that

didn’t completely tell the tale. The Vikings were 9-3 overall, reaching the NCAA FCS playoffs for the first time in 15 seasons. The wins were epic: a first-ever victory over a Pac-12 school, 24-17 against Washington State; a 66-7 win over North Texas which was the largest margin in NCAA his-tory by an FCS team over an FBS team; wins over Montana, Montana State, Cal Poly and Eastern Washington - all of which ended long losing streaks to those schools. In the end, PSU went 5-1 against nationally-ranked teams, 2-0 against FBS schools, had its first nine-win season in its FCS history, and an improvement of six games over the 2014 season. By mid-season, Barnum’s interim contract had morphed into a five-year deal at Portland State. At the end of the season, he was recognized by his peers and the media as the Big Sky Confer-ence and the FCS National Coach of the Year. It marked the first time a Viking football coach had won either honor.

In 2011, Julius Thomas became the highest drafted Viking (4th round) since Neil Lomax in 1981.

The celebration was on after Portland State beat Washington State in 2015, igniting the Vikings’ best Division I season in school history.

Portland State has made a total of 10 post-season appearances in its history - eight as an NCAA II member and two as an NCAA I FCS participant. The Vikings are 12-10 all-time in playoff games, including 12-5 at home, 0-3 on the road and 0-2 at neutral sites (both NCAA II national championship games in Florence, AL).

NCAA 1 FCS In just its fifth season as an NCAA 1 FCS competitor and third season eligible, the Portland State football program earned a berth in the post-season playoffs (2000). PSU was selected as the number 15 seed in the 2000 playoffs and traveled to Delaware for a first round game. The playoff selection was the culmination of a building process Head Coach Tim Walsh started in 1996. The Vikings were 3-8, 4-7, 5-6, 8-3, 8-3 in their first five Division I seasons. The Vikings returned to the playoffs in 2015, hosting their first FCS playoff game ever. The sixth-seeded Vikings lost to Northern Iowa, 29-17, in the second round.

NCAA II Portland State reached the playoffs eight times in the last nine years it was a Divi-sion II member, between 1987 and 1995. The Vikings reached the championship game in 1987 and 1988, the semifinals in 1991 and 1992, and led the nation in total offense in 1995.

Rashad Floyd, who was an Arena Bowl champion with the Colorado Crush of the AFL in 2005, was an AP All-American for PSU in 2000. He has been an All-Arena League selection, as well as setting AFL records for tackles in a season (156) and a single game (17.5).

ADAM HAYWARDSHAUN BODIFORD

Former Portland State wide receiver James Hundon (80) holds the distinc-tion of being the first PSU-affiliated person ever to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated (Feb. 12, 2001). The cover had Hundon catch-ing a pass for the San Francisco De-mons of the ill-fated XFL. Hundon also spent four seasons in the NFL, played two years in the CFL, and became one of the top receivers in the Arena Football League with the San Jose Sabercats. He was featured again in the May 23, 2005 SI for his work as a youth counselor.
