Introduction [INTRODUCE SELF AND BLACK EXPERIENCE PROJECT] [REFERENCE PRIOR CONTACT FROM RECRUITMENT) AND CONFIRM SPEAKING TO CORRECT INDIVIDUAL] The purpose of this study is to better understand the lived experiences of individuals in the GTA who self-identify as Black, and the factors leading to their successes and challenges. The results are intended to help identify policies and other initiatives that will contribute to the health and vibrancy of the Black community, and by doing so, the health and vibrancy of the entire GTA community and beyond. I can provide you with further information about the project at the end of the interview. We are interviewing a representative sample of 2,000 individuals across the GTA, to include the full diversity of the Black community in terms of region and neighbourhood, gender, age, socio-economic status, ethnic background and other characteristics. The interview will last about an hour, depending on how much you have to say. All of your responses will be strictly confidential. Once we compile the information, we will remove all identifying information and no one’s name will be identified in our reporting. As we go through the interview, I would encourage you to answer all of the questions, but you do not need to answer any that you may find uncomfortable or prefer not to answer. At the end of the interview, we are happy to provide you with a modest token of our appreciation for your time that includes three gift certificates. Before we start the interview, I will ask you to review and sign this consent form. There are two copies, and the second is for you to keep. Any questions before we begin? ______________________________________________________________________________ Start Time: ___ : ___ ___

Intersecting Identities

While recognizing that people in the Black community have different ethnicities, nationalities, racial and cultural traditions, we also want to explore other aspects of our identities. For example, religion, gender, sexual orientation, profession or neighbourhood may be important parts of some people’s identity, while for others it is not. The next few questions are about better understanding some of the defining characteristics of your identity. 10. Contribution of the Black Community

The next few questions are about the Black community. We recognize that there is a great deal of diversity within the Black community, and that some people see it as many communities rather than a single Black community. When we use the term "Black community" we are referring to the broader Black population. Each community is unique in its own way, and each has contributed to the life of the Greater Toronto Area and Canada. 86. What do you think makes the Black community unique or distinct from the many diverse groups that make up the Greater Toronto Area? SPECIFY
