There are many versions of the origins of St. Valentine,

so I will tea t, oldest one I know of. Itis the legend of a

monk calledS t. Valentinewhowas sentencedtoprison inthe

days of the Inquisition.This monk served his time in solitary confmemeot, sepa-

rated from the other prisoners. The only human he was

to see was the guardwhobroughthis foodandwater

every day. San Valent[n had nothing to do but sink himself

into deep meditation and prayer.From time to time, as he paced his solitary cell, he drew

up at the only window and looked out between iron bars at

the tiny panorama afforded to his eyes. Near the window

grew some violets nurtured by the morning dew and rain

waters stored in the roots to slake their thirsL They grew

beautifully and St. Valentine entertained himselfby observ-

ing them in silent contemplation.One day, the story goes, as St. Valentine extasized at the

sight of these plants, a messenger pigeon alighted on his

window sill. The monk reached out through the bars and

leaf from the most beautiful violets.

Using his fork by way ofa pen he wrote a message oflove

for humanity. It was dated February 14 and ended with the

word: "I love you". He carefully fled the leaf to the

pigeon’s leg and, with a gentle push, it took flight into the

infinite blue sky.This message arrived and the person who received it

continued writing love notes to his neighbors, who in turn

wrote their messagesand so it grew. In this way the message

of love from St. Valentine crossed borders and oceans and

eventually someone was inspired to call this date the Day of

Love.Futtwe generations refined and modified ths message to

the stage of printing beautiful and costly cards decorated

a red heart upon which we may read messages of love

dedicated to relatives, friends, godparents, couSinS, grand-

parents, etc. Those for sweethearls generally bear a scarlet

heartpiercedby Cupid’s arrow. Manypeopledress inredon

St. Valentine’s Day as a symbol of ardent love.

There’s never a lack of exaggeration in such things and

St. Valentine’s Day has become the Day of Love. Bakers,

florists and other shop keepers have their hay day selling

cakes, chocolates, total arrangemenls, etc. as gifts and in

this way St. Valentine is remembered. compare it to

another Santa Claus day with gifts in bright red.

You may ask w,ho brought St. Valentine s D.ay to

Vieques’ Well, if you re flfinking it was the amercanos

upon taking possession of the island, or the Navy, or the

gringos who reside here my answer is a resounding NO.

This tradition arrived in the 60’s and I believe it was

introduced by the Viequeuses themselves, those who were

forcedtoemigrate forjobsor thosewholeft on pleasuretrips

toNewYorkand otherplaces in theStates. They adoptedthe

custom, brought it back with them and it has been growing

by leaps and bounds on our little island by the consent of its

inhabitants.’St. Valentine’s Day is not a holiday, nor is it biblical, nor

anything of that nature. It is just another work day, like any

other day of the week.

Violeta Theatre more than 50 years ago. Suddenly there ap-peared on the screen of my memory visions of those treepeople who, with the mud men, assisted Flash Gordon whenhe found blmself in tight SlX)ts defending Prince Brain, theEmperor of the Planet Mongo.

These tree folk had characteristics ofmen and of birds intheir physical make-up and because they opened brancheslike wings which empowered them for flight. Who can saywhether one of them may have escaped the silver screen andgone to hide in the tree at E1Fom’n Conde de Mirasol?This tree man of the photo is disintegrating, but one canstill observe two pairs of eyes, the left arm is still partlyfleshed and the hand retains its little finger, part of the ringfinger and the thumb. Where the skin over the belly is torna strange figure appears showing its head, forehead, nose,the comer of the right eye, the mouth, shoulders and chest.He seems to have a tattoo of a female nude. She is dark-skinned and blessed with long, straight, black hair. It wouldappear that as he loses his skin, one discovers it is really apregnant tree woman.One may also perceive the figures ofmany little animalsthat have been nourishing themselves on its sap as little bylittle, it is converted into carrion.To tell the truth, if0ne pays careful attention, one contin-ues to discover a thousand forms projected by this old treetrunk and almost all of them may be compared to humanbodies. Tan pronto la vf, record6 los episodios de la seriecinematogrfifica titulada F/ash Gnrdon que se exhibi6 en elTeatro Violeta hace 51 aries o mLs. De pronto apareci6 en eltcl6n demi memoriaaquellos hombres arb6reos que conjun-tamente con los hombres de arcilla, ayudaban a Flash Gor-don cuando 6ste estaba en aprictos defendiendo al PrfnipeBarfn, Emperador del plannta Mongo.

Estos arb6reos tenhin caracterfsticas de hombres ypfijaros per su ffsico y porque abr/an las ramas come alasdindoles el poder de velar. Qui6n sabe si alguno de ellos secscap6 de la pantalla cinematogrfica y fue a esconderseene la arboleda de/Fonln Conde de Mirasol.

Este hombre arbdreo de hi fete va desintegrfindose, peteatin se le ven dos pares de ojos, el braze izquierdo conservaparte de la pie/y en la mane le quedan el dedo mefiique, elpulgar y un pedacito de anular. AI desgarrarse la piel delvenre aparece una figura rata con cabeza, frente, nariz, lacomsura del ojo derecho y boca, hombres y pecho. Parecetenet un tatuaje que simula una rnujer desnuda. Era un ser humano sumamcnte cordia/, amable, sacrifi-eado y dedicado a la lucha pot una sociedad mfisjusta y feliz.Para escribir sobre Pucho habria de hacer una semblanzade 3 6 4 pginas a maquinilla. Pot limitaciones de espaciomencionar6 solo algunas fireas de trabajo politico social enlas cuales particip6 Pucho durante su vida. En primer lugarsu amor y orgullo de ser parte de nuestra isla de Vieques, 1ohizo set pane activa de C. N. P. D. V. en la Isla Grande paralos afios 1978-87. Pucho nunca abandon6 su deseo pot verun Vieques libre, pr6spero, vivo, alegre, donde todos sushijos pueddn desempefiar y ejercer sus mejores destrezas yconocimientos. En esta ocasi6n,el demostr6 su valenu’a, coraje y determinaci6n frente a laagresi6n de la Fuerza de Choqoc, la cual reprimi6 al estudi-antado violentamente. Letter to the EitorMany visitors to Vicques express the desh’e to learn more

about the island, and while TVT and the VCHT are goodsources of information, some questions seem to warrantfurthnr exploration. People interested in education haveraised the following questions:

(I) How many schools and at what levels they exist?(2) How many students are enrolled at each school?(3) How many adolescents graduate from the high

school?(4) What percent of students complete school gradtate

from high school? What percent drop out?(5) Of those who graduate, how many go ,’ for higher

education at technical schools, junior colleges, or tmiversi-ties in Puerto Rico or in the mainland U.S.?Rumor has it that the military forces who control much of

what happens to Vieques do not want bright Viequenseyoungpeople to utilize their secon&ary scheol and/oruniver-sity education to "make a difference" to the Vieques econ-omy and political life, that talented youngsters are encour-aged to go elsewhere. How would it be possible to test thetruth of such a rumor?
