V-CARE your healthcare bulletin

T here are many causes of scalp hair loss, and they do differ in men and women.

This article will cover the common ones. Studies show that losing up to 100-150 hairs per day is normal. Human hair naturally grows in three phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen. Anagen is the active or growing phase. Catagen is a fairly short phase of the natural hair cycle during which hairs begin to break down. Telogen is the resting phase. The hairs that are shed daily are often in the resting or late phase in the hair cycle. Normally, about 10% of the scalp hairs are in the resting or telogen phase at any time. These hairs are not growing and are get-ting prepared for cyclic shedding.

CLASSIFICATION

There are numerous ways to clas-sify hair loss. One useful way to classify hair loss is by whether the loss is:

Generalized or diffuse

Localized or patchy

GENERALIZED HAIR LOSS

This is an overall hair thinning without specific bald spots or pat-terns. While this type of hair loss may not be noticeable to others, but the individual will feel their hair is not as thick or full as it previ-ously was. Common conditions in this category are

Telogen effluvium: - Rapid shed-ding after childbirth, fever, or sud-den weight loss

Androgenetic or androgenic:-Hair loss ("male-pattern bald-ness," "female-pattern bald-ness").

PATCHY HAIR LOSS

Some conditions produce small areas of scalp, while others af-fect large areas of the scalp. Common causes of patchy hair loss are as follows:

Trichotillomania

Tinea capitis

Alopecia areata

TRICHOTILLOMANIA

This refers to the habit of someone voluntarily pulling at their own hairs or twisting them, sometimes without realiz-ing it. The scalp and eyelashes are often affected. Unlike alopecia areata patches, which are perfectly smooth, hair patches in trichotillomania show broken hairs. Treatment is often entirely behavioral: You have to notice that you're doing it and then consciously stop.

TINEA CAPITIS

Tinea is the medical word for fungal infection, and capitis means head. Tinea capitis is fungal infection of the scalp that mostly affects the school-age children. Tinea capitis is more common in black African or African-American scalps. This condition is rare in healthy adults. Bald spots usually show broken-off hairs. Oral anti-

fungal are needed to penetrate the hair roots and cure the infection after which hair grows back. It is contagious from sharing hats or combs and brushes.

ALOPECIA

Alopecia means hair loss and can be classified into three categories:-

Alopecia areata (hair loss in patches)

Alopecia totalis (lose all hair on the scalp)

Alopecia universalis (lose all hair on the body)

Hair often grows back but may fall out again. Sometimes the hair loss lasts for many years. Alopecia is not contagious. It is not due to nerves. In this, the immune system attacks the hair follicles (structures that contain the roots of the hair), caus-ing hair loss. This disease most often occurs in otherwise healthy people.

OUTCOME

When a person has alopecia areata, the hair will start to re-grow when the body gets the right signals. Sometimes this happens without treatment. Even with treatment, new hair loss can occur. Everything depends on how the immune sys-tem reacts.

PANIC DISORDER

P anic disorder is a real illness that can be successfully treated. It is characterized by sudden attacks of terror, usually accompanied by a pounding heart, sweatiness, weakness, faintness

or dizziness. During these attacks people with panic disorder may flush or feel chilled; their hands may tingle or feel numb; and they may experience nausea, chest pain, or smothering sen-sations. Panic attacks usually produce a sense of unreality, a fear of impending doom, or a fear of losing control. A fear of one’s own unexplained physical symptoms is also a symptom of panic disorder. Peo-ple having panic attacks sometimes believe they are having heart attacks, losing their minds, or on the verge of death. They can’t predict when or where an attack will occur, and between epi-sodes many worry intensely and dread the next attack. Panic attacks can occur at any time, even during sleep. An attack usually peaks within 10 min-utes, but some symptoms may last much longer. Panic disorder affects about 6 million American adults and is twice as common in women as men. Panic attacks often begin in late adolescence or early adulthood, but not everyone who experiences panic attacks will develop panic disorder. Many people have just one attack and never have another. The tendency to develop panic attacks appears to be inherited. People who have full-blown, repeated panic attacks can become very disabled by their condi-tion and should seek treatment before they start to avoid places or situations where panic at-tacks have occurred. For example, if a panic attack happened in an elevator, someone with panic disorder may develop a fear of elevators that could affect the choice of a job or an apart-ment, and restrict where that person can seek medical attention or enjoy entertainment. Some people’s lives become so restricted that they avoid normal activities, such as grocery shopping or driving. About one-third become housebound or able to confront a feared situa-tion only when accompanied by a spouse or other trusted person. When the condition pro-gresses this far, it is called Agoraphobia, or fear of open spaces. Early treatment can often prevent agoraphobia, but people with panic disorder may sometimes go from doctor to doctor for years and visit the emergency room repeatedly before someone correctly diagnoses their condition. This is unfortunate, because panic disorder is one of the most treatable of all the anxiety disorders, responding in most cases to certain kinds of medication or certain kinds of cognitive psychotherapy, which help change thinking pat terns that lead to fear and anxiety. Panic disorder is often accompanied by other serious problems, such as depression, drug abuse, or alcoholism. These conditions need to be treated separately. Symptoms of depression include feelings of sadness or hopelessness, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, low energy, and diffi-culty concentrating. Most people with depression can be effectively treated with anti-depressant medications, certain types of psychotherapy, or a combination of the two.

nied by serious problems, such as depression, drug abuse, or alcohol-

ism…”
