Good afternoon, and welcome to WaltonLane for this afternoon’s Sussex County FAIntermediate Cup 3rd Round tie against BexhillUnited under 21’s.We extend a warm welcome to our visitorsplayers, officials and supporters who havemade the long journey along the coast forthis afternoon’s game, in addition to today’smatch referee, Mark Spencer from Wick - andhope they all enjoy their short stay here atWalton Lane.It had been a long time coming, but aftermonth on the sidelines owing to two matchpostponements and two walkovers – wefinally got back in action on Saturday, although left Ferring with our first Division 2defeat since Westfield on August 29.It was a game played out in difficultconditions, with Ben Blanshard levelling priorto Richard Ghent’s winner. It’s a dent in an otherwise impressive run ofform, and we’re well placed with the ‘official’Division 2 table still to show our anticipatedthree points from Ifield’s no-show a fortnightago, in what is becoming quite a bunchedtop-six - which is sure to take on many moretwists and turns. It didn’t take long for the mood to changehowever, with the club Christmas Party onSaturday evening at club sponsors, TheWoodmancote Pub – who we would like tothank for accommodating us, and making foranother enjoyable evening.Am sure Andy’s squad will be keen to put lastweek’s blip in form quickly behind them withcup progress today – the Intermediate Cup isone we’ve never won, having been beatentwice in the final, so it’s fair to say a run is onthe list of season priorities.

With today’s game switched owing to twoprevious postponements at Bexhill, it’s a greatopportunity to progress into the last 16.Off the field, Life President, Dick Doncaster, has been nominated for a Chichester ObserverCommunity Award in recognition of his 40years service to the club – a thoroughlydeserved nomination,As many of you will know, Dick – and his wife,Gerry – have been long standing servants tothe club, and seen us through some toughtimes – for which we have much to thankthem for.We hope they enjoy their evening at thefinalists ceremony at Butlins, Bognor Regis, onDecember 14.We are delighted to welcome our new SportsTherapy team, Lee Jones and Scott Everley tothe club. Both are currently studying at PortsmouthUniversity – Scott has experience in theSouthern League with Uxbridge, and Leebrings sports massage and tapingqualifications. We are extremely grateful tothe University for answering our need.More good news in that the club has beensuccessful in gaining £750 as part of SussexFA’s Growth Fund in lieu of our FA CharterStandard Status, development and retentionof youth teams at under 15 and 18 levels. In addition, a further £250 from the UK PowerNetworks sports fund has been gained to puttowards training equipment for the under15’s.Being voluntary run, this is all of coursefantastic news - and alongside our valued localbusiness sponsors, will go a long way incontinuing a longer term sustainable model, with youth development at our core. The u15’s recently saw England u21’s 3-1victory against Switzerland at the AmexStadium, Brighton – made possible throughour FA Charter Standard status – a greatexperience for the guys, who are the future ofour club.Remember the clubhouse and bar is open, with hot and cold food/ drink and scores onthe TV.

Enjoy the game,

Southern Combination FootballLeague – Division 2

By Alan PriceBosham slipped to a disappointingdefeat this week at a very blusteryGlebelands, against a Ferring side insearch of points to try and move awayfrom the bottom half of the table andleave the reds management frustratedat how this one got away. The conditions were terrible with avery heavy pitch and a strong wind forboth sides to contend with, butBosham started brightly in their firstgame for several weeks, thanks to therecent inclement weather.Marco Giambelardini got through ongoal after only six minutes but withkeeper to beat, scooped his effortover the bar.Ferring took heart and a couple ofminutes later, albeit against the run ofplay, sneaked into the lead insurprising circumstances.Piotor Szczepaniuk hit a speculativeball towards the Robins penalty areaand the effort was suddenly ripped bya gust of wind and flew over thestunned, Kieran Magee, and into theback of the net. This was a real setback for the redsbut to their credit they got straightback up from the blow and came backstrongly to let Ferring know thatBosham weren’t out of the tie just yet.

The conditions were making thingstough for both sides and Bosham werefinding things increasingly awkward tomake this tick and saw numerousopportunites to test keeper, NickTaylor, go by time after time.Rossi Kay and Richard Ghent lookedsharp for the blues and their pace wasmaking life nervy for the reds defenceand several good chances came andwent before the break but with onlyone goal to show for their effortsFerring went in content but still a littlefrustrated whereas Bosham could feelconfident that things could change forthe better in the second half.Indeed the reds got back level just tenminutes in when Ben Blanshardheaded in from a Graham Dowdenfree kick.It was a deserved equaliser as the redshad started really strongly, now withthe wind at their backs but, sadly, thatwas as good as it got for the robins asthe Ferring went on a smash and grabraid to come away with the points.Late in the half Ghent saw a free kicksomehow avoid all attention andnestle in the bottom corner leavingBosham players aghast at what hadjust happened.Bosham threw everything but thekitchen sink at Ferring in the timeremaining but the blues held on for arain soaked three points. IronicallyBosham are still well placed in thetable with only six points separatingthe top six as it stands.Bosham: Magee, Probee, Redman,Docherty, Blanshard, Edgington, Bell,Wilson, Lafferty, Giambelardini,Dowden. Subs: Stevens, Storey.

IN THE BEGINNINGI’ve been watching Non-League football ona regular basis since I was 10 years old. What I like most is that the players, clubofficials and supporters are there for thelove of the game. The true spirit offootball exists at Non-League level.I grew up in North-West London and I wastaken by my family to see my local clubQPR as a child in the 1970’s.I’ve always supported the R’s, but whenthey were playing away from home Istarted going to see my local Non-Leagueclubs – Hendon primarily, but alsoFinchley, Barnet and Edgware Town.

GROUNDHOPPERFrom there, I decided to visit every Non-League club in London as mygroundhopping bug began. By the time Iwas 17, I had visited all 92 Football Leaguegrounds and I visited all the ScottishLeague grounds whilst still a teenager.Since then, I’ve continued travelling allaround the country to visit Non-Leagueclubs. Earlier this season, I chalked up my2,000th ground at FC United ofManchester.

WORLD RECORDOne of the best groundhops was beingpart of a world record in March 2004. Ijoined 250 other groundhoppers to watchfive matches at five different footballgrounds in one day in the CentralMidlands League. This is listed in the Guinness Book ofRecords and we received certificatesconfirming the world record at the end ofthe fifth game.

INSIDE PRISON!In December 2011, I set about watching amatch inside Feltham Prison in Middlesex. This featured a team called Phoenix FC,who had to play all their fixtures at home(for obvious reasons!) as inmates of theYoung Offender Institution at Feltham.I received special permission by email toattend a fixture, but I was told not to bringa phone or a camera with me. I wasinstructed to arrive in the main car parkalong with the match referee and thevisiting players from Hanworth Villa Vets.We were met by members of the prisonstaff who escorted us all in together…viaan airport-style metal detector, a bodysearch, numerous locked gates and along apath to the changing rooms. This process took 45 minutes. After theplayers and ref got changed, we were thenaccompanied through more locked gatesout to the playing area.A high mesh fence with barbed wire on topsurrounded the football pitch. There weredug-outs along one touchline and Iwatched the match from there as the onlyspectator.

THE FUTUREBy going to FC United, I re-completed visitsto the top 16 divisions of English footballdown to Non-League step 4. Then at step 5I need 30 grounds and another 81 at step6.There are endless possibilities at step 7and below. Also, I’ve been to 35 Europeancountries plus the USA for football – so itwould be nice to visit more countries.
