Wisdom To Discern A Scam A customer calls indicating he needs a key for his set of laundry machines for his medium size apartment complex. The last key has been lost and it was one of those skinny round type keys. Business is slow and we begin to drool at the cost of creating a Greenwald key for the customer. We show up in our spanking clean service truck to meet the clean cut maintenance guy named Jack, dressed in his generic maintenance uni-form and inform him it will cost $100 (put in your own price) to create a key for his equipment. In fact, if all was ideal, the key should fit all the machines in the basement. He quickly agrees that the key they had did, indeed, fit all the ma-chines. You gather your toys and begin to create this magic key for the gentleman, which should put you in first place on his recommendation list. Within minutes (although it seemed like hours to you), a key was created. And how that key worked smooth! Better than you even imagined. The gentleman asked if you took purchase orders or insisted on cash as he realized this was the first time they needed a locksmith. You agreed cash would be better, and the transaction took place. You left proud (but in big time trouble), and he left rich. . . . Why? Get your discussion answer at the March LSA meeting.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE—ROB ROVINSKY, CPL

February was a rough month, especially for our two local associations. First the CPR class was canceled due to a snow storm and the turn out at the LSA meeting was impacted by Valentines Day. Well, you can’t argue with Mother Nature and you sure don’t want to argue priorities with your honey on Valentine’s Day. So, OK, March is upon us and as I write this: IDN’s trade show is around the cor-ner and the LSA will again have a booth. It’s our annual opportunity to reintroduce our esteemed association to a wide audience. IDN has again graciously donated a box or two of items for a silent auction; with proceeds going to the LSA. What we need now are am-bassadors for the LSA to man the booth during the trade show. (The more members who step up; the shorter the shifts.) The show runs from 12:30 am thru 4:30 pm, Friday March

7th and from 9:00 am thru 2:00 pm, Saturday March 8th. The value of a diverse and dynamic membership to an association cannot be overstated. The value of a strong and dynamic association to its members is likewise immense. It would be great if new members and renewing members would join us during the trade show. I hope to see you all there and count on you to lend support to the LSA by being ambassadors and speak to people about the value you derive from your association.

-Rob Rovinsky, CPL— President, LSA

Congratulations to Ted Schultz for the great job he did in presenting and leading last month’s Basic Master Keying class. Thank you to him for spending the last few months building the class curriculum. The class content was very informa-tive and was presented in clear, understanding way. Also, a special thank you to the LSA members who continue to gain knowledge and show their support by at-tending the LSA Education Programs each month. Business Education: if any LSA member or Associate member has any

ideas about having Business Classes, the Education Department would like to hear from you. Maybe classes like “How to expand your business with your current budget”, “Marketing 101” or “How to run your business without it running you”. These could be half day classes or couple of hours, possibly even after 5:00 pm during the week. IDN Hardware sales annual trade show will be March 6th thru 9th and will be offering a wide range of classes. See www.idnhardware.com for the schedule. The show will be located at the Novi Sheridan Hotel. April 12th and 13th : LSA is a class offering Door Hardware and Door Closers installation followed by a bonus class on Sunday, Exit Device Installation and Servicing. Located at the Holi-day Inn Roseville. Cost for the weekend is $165.00. Call today to reserve your seat, as class size is limited. ALOA PRP will be offered after each class for $15.00. -Marc A. ROGUE’S ROW— FEBRUARY LSA MEETING

LSA REPORTER

Happy Birthday, Al! A frightening thought………….

Continued from page 1 — Member of the Month ……. accommodate his clientele. During this time he worked part-time at Home Depot, where he is still employed mainly because of the medical benefits. Robert was recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and needs regular medication to control the disease. He has three brothers, and the youngest also has MS as does their father. Robert is interested in learning new techniques as evidenced by his varied career. In his Locksmithing work, he is looking for-ward to doing autos and safes. For recreation, he and his family like camping and sailing. Robert and his wife Cheryl have two children – R.J. and Kaitlynn. A while back, the family was motoring out of a harbor near Anchor Bay when the engine quit. He had to jump overboard to pre-vent the boat from hitting the rocks! He commented; “It will be a while before they will go with me again!” Robert also enjoys being a Cub Scout Dad. I hope you are encouraged as much as I am with this young man’s perseverance!

LET’S TALK BUSINESS - “The Customer is King” We always hear the old adage that “ The Customer is King” ! ! I would like to rephrase that to:“ The Client is King”!!! In my opinion, a customer is anyone who dials your phone num-ber or walks into your shop needing your services. A client, how-

ever, is a customer that is attached to some history with you and your business. Hopefully, it is a loyal customer and someone that you have a rapport with. I have often wrestled ( in my mind, only) with the first time caller who wants me to go out of my way to help them. Either come to them in the middle of the night or make some special payment considerations. These circumstances must be looked at individually, of course. In contrast, when it comes to a client of mine, there is no thought about special circum-stances! If we are asked to come to them at 1:00 am in the morning, I would only ask “Where should I park?” I have an uncle in Ohio who I consider a successful businessman (an unrelated business), who once told me that there are two kinds of customers: “Those who won’t let you sleep” and “Those who won’t let you eat”. Those who won’t let you eat you don’t need. Yes, the client is King, they pay our bills, feed our family and send us on much needed vacations. There is rarely any request that cannot be granted. You, the businessman, must decide if you are willing to have clients. Though there are businesses that survive on the profits of a lot of “one-time” customers. I have given out my personal cell phone number to clients and even my home phone num-ber. Surprisingly, I don’t get many calls after hours from my clients. If they do call, they are taken care of to the best of my ability and the circumstance. I truly believe that my clients know that I, too, have a life. And, unless it’s a true emergency, their problem can wait until business hours.

“Education, Knowledge & Cooperation—

Dear LSA Webmaster, I am the Director of Acme School - Locksmithing Division in Worth, IL. Acme is the only state accredited resident locksmithing school in the state of Illinois, and our students originate from all over the U.S.. I am also Founder and Past President of the IL-IN Locksmith Association. Some time ago I happened upon your website. I was very impressed with the thoroughness of your site. I have become a frequent visitor to LsaMichigan.org , and have found it all-inclusive and extremely easy to navigate. Your information is clear and concise. I have added LsaMichi-gan.org to Acme School's list of "preferred resources," which is distrib-uted to all of our graduates. Your site has received only positive feed-back from our students. I am sure that al of our past and future students from Michigan will become members of LSA Michigan. I recently had the opportunity to buy a whole shop of equipment and supplies from a deceased locksmith's estate. It is quite a wide assortment of new and like-new equipment. I am offering quite a bit of this equip-ment for sale. If you or anyone in your association would be interested in receiving a complete list of available products, please contact me ei-ther by email [email protected] or cell phone (708) 710-9222. Thank you again for the resource of your website. Bill Beranek

The Value of the LSA Website

Here is a great letter, submitted via e-mail, that shows that LSA reaches people far beyond the scope of Metro Detroit. It’s always nice to get a “good” letter. -LSA Webmaster

Last Meeting Recap……by John Hubel, CML Lots of handouts to be had certainly was true regarding the promotional materials supplied by Arrow. Even if you weren’t a big seller of the Arrow product, the generosity of the Arrow company may have you reconsider their product line. The new “R” series is a competitive product for the imports being pre-sented by others. Arrow would love for you to test their “R” products and see for yourself. Earlier a promotion was being made via the locksmith journals to receive a FREE lock to test and keep (and sell). What better offer can be made? A special thank you goes to Brad Smith our Arrow Brand Manager. It was through him we were able to get the quantities for the last meeting. We have a few counter mats and counter mouse pads along with the brochure stands and brochures to complement your shop which we will bring to the March meeting for you taking. We will also see if the FREE product promotions are still in effect and how to send for your FREE deadbolt and leverset. Go to: www.arrowlock.com today!
