2014-15SEASON

Our 2014-15 concert season bears the mark of our success in the past couple of seasons in establishing strong partnerships within the Seattle arts community. Specifically, we are thrilled to see the results of our work with area arts organizations such as the Seattle Symphony and Pacific MusicWorks inspiring our students, faculty, and the greater community to strive for new heights of excellence in performance and listening.

In our upcoming season, the musicians of the UW Symphony Orchestra will have two extra special opportunities to learn and perform with the leadership and musicians of Seattle Symphony. On January 23, our orchestra goes downtown to Benaroya Hall for a performance of Poulenc’s Double Piano Concerto (featuring faculty pianists Robin McCabe and Craig Sheppard), a new work by faculty composer Joël-François Durand, and a conducting appearance by affiliate professor Ludovic Morlot. And then, on April 24, the SSO returns the favor by coming to campus to perform, side-by-side with our wonderful student musicians, a performance we are delighted to present free of charge to the citizens of Seattle.

Our fledgling collaboration with early music production company Pacific MusicWorks (PMW) took flight last spring with an astonishing staging of Handel’s oratorio Semele. This season, PMW artistic director and School of Music faculty artist Stephen Stubbs returns to conduct Mozart’s beloved opera The Magic Flute, the region’s first-ever historically informed performance with a classical orchestra. Seattle director (and UW alumnus) Dan Wallace Miller directs this fully-staged professional production, which, in addition to showcasing the talents of professional musicians such as new UW voice faculty member Cyndia Sieden as Queen of the Night, will feature performances by some of our top UW voice and instrumental performance students.

Other performances of note on our concert calendar include recitals and concerts at Meany Theater by some of our talented faculty musicians, including violist Melia Watras (Jan. 11), and pianists Marc Seales (Feb. 21), Robin McCabe (March 2) and Craig Sheppard (April 25). Several of our Jazz Studies faculty, meanwhile, will join together with students and visiting professional jazz musicians at the UW Ethnic Cultural Center May 1-3 when the School of Music, in collaboration with the student-run Improvised Music Project, proudly presents the Seventh Annual Improvised Music Project Festival (IMPFest). Headliners for this year include modern jazz icon Steve Swallow, bass; and NYC saxophonist Chris Cheek, with appearances each night by Jazz Studies faculty Bill Frisell, guitar, Cuong Vu, trumpet, and Ted Poor, drums.

The School’s director of orchestral activities, David Alexander Rahbee, has put together a rigorous performance schedule for the University of Washington Symphony Orchestra, with performances at Meany Theater on Oct. 30, Dec. 5, March 13, April 24 (with members of Seattle Symphony), and June 5 (with the combined UW Choirs), in addition to the aforementioned concert Jan. 23 at Benaroya Hall. A smaller group made of members of the orchestra performs at Meany on Feb. 20 and at the UW Hub Lyceum on Feb. 19, marking UW Music’s return to that historic venue after a decades-long absence.

The School of Music and its Ethnomusicology Program continue a 50-year tradition of bringing musicians from around the world to the UW campus.

A lecture-recital offers an overview of musical tradition and change, and glimpses into lay singing in Buddhist practice, the relationship of song to instrumental phrasing through breath, Burmese prosody/poetry in vocal music, the central role of timekeeper instruments known as si/wa, and the transformation of the piano in Burma (known as Sandaya, “Burmese Voice”). The School of Music and Seattle Symphony further strengthen a deepening partnership in 2014-15 with orchestral performances at Benaroya Hall and Meany Hall, co-conducted by SSO’s Music Director (and UW faculty member) Ludovic Morlot and UWSO’s director of orchestral activities David Alexander Rahbee. A January 23 concert at Seattle Symphony’s home stage at Benaroya Hall includes a world premiere by faculty composer Joël-François Durand and virtuosic piano artistry by faculty pianists Robin McCabe and Craig Sheppard. A free side-by-side performance at UW on April 24 provides a stellar opportunity for the citizens of Seattle to share in the atmosphere of high musical aspirations emboldened by this ongoing artistic and academic collaboration.

One of Mozart’s crowning achievements, The Magic Flute is a potent alchemical mixture of popular music and theater with a depth of meaning that is still mysterious and controversial. The fact that Mozart had steeped himself in the music of Handel and Bach in the years leading up to The Magic Flute makes it also a personal testament to his admiration for their art.

UW Music joins forces this year with the student-led Improvised Music Project (IMP) to present IMPFest VII May 1 through 3, 2015 at the UW Ethnic Cultural Center.

Over the past seven years the IMP has solidified itself as a leading force in Seattle’s jazz and improvised music community. The annual festival,

which pairs up-and-coming musicians with seasoned professionals, is IMP’s signature annual event. This year, IMP and the School of Music welcome legendary bassist Steve Swallow and acclaimed saxophonist Chris Cheek to perform with UW students and a top-notch faculty house band led by Jazz Studies faculty Bill Frisell, Cuong Vu, and Ted Poor.

Among the most influential in the canon of 20th century solo piano works, these incredibly varied pieces were composed over an intense three-month period following an inspirational meeting with the great Russian pianist, Tatiana Nikolayeva, in October 1950. The School of Music Notecard is a season pass to nearly all* of the concerts presented by the UW School of Music in Meany Theater, Meany Studio Theater, Brechemin Auditorium, the Walker-Ames Room, and the Jones Playhouse.

Notecard prices for the 2014-15 season are $90 for the general public, $75 for UW employees and UW Alumni Association members, and $60 for students and seniors. With nearly 100 Notecard concerts this season, it doesn’t take many to cover the cost of your pass!

A School of Music Notecard is convenient. You don’t need to get tickets in advance — just present your Notecard at the door of the theater at least 20 minutes before the event begins and you will be admitted on a seat-available basis. *

Be sure to allow plenty of time for parking and getting to the concert location. Seating for Notecard events is not reserved and not guaranteed, so the earlier you arrive, the better your chance of getting a seat.

Parking for performances in Meany Theater, Meany Studio Theater, the Jones Playhouse, and the Walker-Ames RoomUnderground parking The entrance to the UW Central Plaza Parking Garage is located at NE 41st Street and 15th Avenue NE, on the west side of campus (Gate 1). A $10 non-refundable flat rate is charged for evening events (5 pm or after). We encourage you to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the performance.

Above-ground parking Enter the UW campus at NE 45th Street and 17th Avenue NE, near the Burke Museum (Gate 2). Stop at the gatehouse to pay (the evening rate is $5) and to obtain directions and a parking permit.
