Christie, Lewandowski put Parkside cross-country in limelight

The Parkside women’s and men’s cross-country teams – and especially a couple of prominent individual runners – recently com-pleted an impressive fall campaign, with each month of the season offering something special. Both teams placed first in the Midwest Open in September and the Lucian Rosa Invitational in October, while senior Hope Christie and sophomore Evan Lewandowski qualified for the nationals in November.

Christie, a former Bradford High School student, garnered a spot on the NCAA Division II All-American team with her performance at the NCAA Champi-onships in Spokane Wash., Nov. 19. In snowy conditions, she finished the 6K course in a time of 22:13 to place 35th and conclude her cross-country career as one of the nation’s best.

“Becoming an All-American this season was always on the goal sheet,” Christie said. “At the begin-

ning of the season it was looking very good, but the injuries kept get-ting worse and worse and eventually I was just wondering if I was going to be able to complete the season.”

Lewandowski was 87th at the na-tionals with a time of 33:13, a little over a minute off of an All-American spot.

“This was a good season,” Lewandowski said. “I was able to meet both my time goal and my goal to make it to nationals. Big Rapids was probably the best race of my career. I was shooting for the top 15, so to finish sixth was more than

I had expected. As far as nationals are concerned, I think I did pretty well for what I had left in me. I put everything I had out there.”

Christie and Lewandowski qualified for the NCAA Champion-ships by placing eighth and sixth, respectively, at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Meet Nov. 5 at Big Rapids, Mich., both garnering all-region honors in the process. Christie (22:12) led the women to a seventh-place finish and the top spot among Great Lakes Valley Conference teams. Lewandowski was second among GLVC runners (32:29) and helped the men place

eighth as a team.

Other key con-tributors for the women’s team this season were fresh-man Markelle Turk, who placed second at the Lucian Rosa Invitational, fourth at the Midwest Open and eighth at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Champi-onships, and junior Jessica Watychow-icz, who was seventh at the conference championships. The duo, plus sopho-more Taylor Miller and Christie, were all-conference selec-tions.

Christie, Lewandowski put Parkside cross-country in limelightPair finishes season with appearances in NCAA National Championships

For the men, junior Jesus Es-careno and Lewandowski earned all-league honors, senior Rehan Mahmood was fourth at the Lucian Rosa Invitational, and freshman twins Tom and Ron Hedman placed fifth and eighth, respectively, at the Midwest Open.

Fighting off the hurtsChristie battled plantar fasci-

itis for the majority of the season, but fought her way through the championship season. She claimed all-conference and all-region recog-nition before attaining the ultimate individual accomplishment of being an All-American.

“All good stories have obstacles that need to be overcome,” said head coach Micah VanDenend. “Hope certainly had that this sea-son with the ups and downs and injuries she had to deal with and get through. Coming back from injuries,

fighting through it, believing in herself and what we were doing showed her commitment to the goal.”

Christie is planning to be back for her final track season this winter and spring, looking to add another All-American honor. Lewandowski’s

goals are to make it to the nation-als in both the indoor and outdoor seasons.

At Bradford, Christie was a three-time cross-country state qualifier and a state track qualifier in the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter relay events. While at Medford Area Se-nior High School, Lewandowski was an eight-time WIAA state qualifier and a five-time conference cham-pion. He owns five school records.

“What a great sophomore year for Evan,” said VanDenend. “This guy was a sixth man at the Regional Championship in 2010 and now one year later he was fourth in the conference, sixth in the region and running for a national champion-ship.”

VanDenend’s assistant coach is Ray Verner, and his graduate assistants are Heidi Ertl and Dustin Baldwin.Hope Christie

This week in Ranger sports

The winter teams are in full swing, but their sched-ules are winding down prior to the semester break. All three teams are at home this week, including a busy day Saturday with a basketball doubleheader and the 40th Annual Wisconsin Open Wrestling Tournament.

Take a look at what’s happening this week in UW-Parkside Athletics.

Men’s BasketballLast week: Defeated Michigan Tech, 73-72; defeated

by Ferris State, 70-65

This week: Dec. 1 vs. #15 Kentucky Wesleyan, 7:30 p.m.; Dec. 3 vs. #12 Southern Indiana, 3 p.m.

Of note: Men’s basketball wrapped up a challenging non-conference run with a 4-1 record after splitting a pair of road games last week. The team is 3-1 in-region, playing its last four contests against Great Lakes Inter-collegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) squads.

Last week was highlighted by a dramatic one-point win at Michigan Tech, the preseason favorite in the GLIAC North Division. Colt Grandstaff knocked down a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Rangers a thrill-ing victory after trailing by as many as 12 points in the second half.

The Rangers are currently fourth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in scoring, led by the backcourt tandem of Jordan Mach (14.6 ppg) and Leneal Harris (14.0). Jeremy Saffold is also in double figures in the early going at 12.6.

This week Parkside opens GLVC play by welcom-ing two top 15 teams to the DeSimone Gymnasium. Kentucky Wesleyan is in town for a 7:30 tipoff on Dec. 1 and Southern Indiana is here Dec. 3 at 3 p.m. Wesleyan comes in as the top scoring team in the conference, av-eraging 109.2 points per game, while Southern Indiana is among the league’s stingiest teams, allowing only 52.8 points a contest.

The Rangers are off to their best start since the 2006-07 season and will look to improve on their perfect mark at home this year. Come on out to the DeSimone Gymnasium this weekend for what promises to be two great games. If you’re not able to attend, we’ll have all the action online via our coverage links on the schedule.

#16 Women’s BasketballLast week: Defeated Trinity International, 75-58; de-

feated Grand Valley State, 73-60; defeated Upper Iowa University, 62-36

This week: Dec. 1 vs. Kentucky Wesleyan, 5:30 p.m.; Dec. 3 vs. Southern Indiana, 1 p.m.

Of note: The women’s team completed a perfect 3-0 week including two in-region victories over the week-end. The Rangers will take a 5-1 mark into conference play along with a 23-game home winning streak after going unblemished over the holiday break.

This week in Ranger sports Last week’s showdown

with previously ranked Grand Valley State lived up to its billing as two of the top teams in the Midwest Region went toe-to-toe for 40 minutes. Neither team led by more than six points until the final minutes when the Rangers were able to stretch their lead and ulti-mately prevail.

Jadee Rooney scored 25 points against Grand Valley State, all in the second half, to help Parkside overcome an early second-half deficit. Brittany Beyer battled foul trouble, but still scored 19 points including some key baskets in the waning minutes. The victory helped the Rangers avenge a loss at Grand Valley State a year ago.

Sophomore Danielle Slivka was also a bright spot last week as she recorded her first career double-dou-ble with 10 points and 10 rebounds in a Nov. 22 victory over Trinity International. She averaged nearly six rebounds for the week to provide key bench minutes for coach Jenny Kenesie’s team.

This week will also prove to be a challenge for the women as GLVC play begins. The Rangers welcome Kentucky Wesleyan Dec. 1 at 5:30 p.m. The Panthers reached the NCAA Tournament a year ago and return the majority of that squad this year.

The Dec. 3 game (1 p.m. start) is against Southern Indiana. The Screaming Eagles handed Parkside one of its three conference losses a year ago. They are off to a 5-1 start and are tied with the Rangers for the division’s top record heading into league play.

We hope to see you out at the DeSimone Gymna-sium this weekend. If you’re not able to attend, we’ll have all the action online via our coverage links on the schedule.

WrestlingLast week: Off

This week: Host Wiscon-sin Open on Dec. 3 at 9 a.m.

Of note: After taking the holiday week off, the wres-tlers are back in action look-ing to build off their strong start to the season. This week the team will be home for one of the few times this season as it hosts the 40th annual Wisconsin Open in the Pedretti Fieldhouse.

Luke Rynish will look to continue his perfect start as he leads the team into the

Open coming off of three straight tournament titles at 174 pounds. He will be in search of his first Wisconsin Open title.

Davien Willis and Nick Fishback are also coming off of strong third-place showings at the Concordia Open.

The Rangers have 89 champions all-time in the 39-year history of the Wisconsin Open. Cody Zimmer-man and Dillon Bera each won titles a year ago. The program has also had three of the last six outstanding wrestler award winners at the Open.

Matches will start Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in the Fieldhouse. Spectators will be asked to park in an alternate lot due to all the traffic coming in for events on that day. Results will be posted once compiled fol-lowing the tournament.

The 18th-ranked Rangers knocked off perennial power-house Grand Valley State, 73-60, in a key regional matchup Nov. 26. The game, played at UW-Parkside, featured two of the top teams in the Midwest Region and did not disap-point. Neither team led by more than six points until the final minute when the Rangers pulled away at the free throw line. The Rangers came back the following day and put a 62-36 thumping on Upper Iowa to improve to 5-1 on the season. The twin wins for the Rangers extended their home winning streak to 23 games. UW-Parkside begins the Great Lakes Valley Conference season with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff against Kentucky Wesleyan in the DeSimone Gymna-sium Thursday, Dec. 1.

UW-Parkside was down by two points as the final buzzer sounded at Michigan Tech Nov. 22. The ball was still in the air, after being released by Colt Grandstaff from behind the three-point arc. The ball swished through the hoop and gave the Rangers a buzzer-beating 73-72 win over the Huskies, a team projected to win the North Division of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Rangers then put their 4-0 record on the line at Ferris State Nov. 26 and suffered their first loss of the season, 70-65, to the home standing Bulldogs. UWP will open Great Lakes Valley Conference play Thursday, Dec. 1, against Kentucky Wesleyan in the DeSimone Gymnasium. A 7:30 p.m. tipoff is scheduled.
