Wrestling program hopes to add to impressive trophy case
Wrestling is at least as much of an individual sport as it is a team sport – especially at UW-Parkside where no team scores are kept at many of its meets – but when in-terim head coach Gregg Lewis looks at his wrestlers, he sees a team first and individuals second.
“At the end of the day, as a coach, I evaluate our guys as a team. I’m always judging the group as a team,” Lewis said. “Not based on team scores at a meet, but on how we help each other and support each other. The younger guys can learn from the older guys, and they can also push the older guys and make them better as a result.”
Speaking of younger guys, 22 of the 30 Ranger wrestlers are fresh-men and three are sophomores. Among the up-perclassmen are three returning All-Americans: senior Luke Rynish and juniors Dillon Bera and Matthew Gille.
Rynish pro-duced a 24-4 re-cord last season, placing in four tournaments and pacing the team
in takedowns, plenty points received and major decisions. The Parkside Male Athlete of the Year and NCAA Division II All-American was runner-up at the National Tournament.
“Luke is a guy who rises to the occasion,” Lewis said. “He’s a leader and he wants to be in the limelight. He’s a workhorse who has high expectations for himself. Some op-ponents are able to stay about even with him for awhile, but then he takes over in the third period.”
Quality coming backBera was 26-8 in 2010-11,
leading the team in reversals, near falls and technical falls. The NCAA Division II All-American was named the Wisconsin Open champion and the NCAA II Super Three Regional champion, and was an NCAA II Na-tional Tournament qualifier.
Gille compiled a 33-13 record last season, placing in six tourna-
ments, including eighth at the NCAA II National Tournament. He topped the Rangers in pins, bonus point wins, major decisions and technical falls, while tying for second in most career wins by a Parkside sopho-more with 76.
“Dillon is a soft spoken but con-fident kid,” Lewis said. “He’s a hard worker and a student of wrestling with a unique style. He really rolls around and scrambles. Matthew is a strong technical wrestler who’s exciting to watch. He’s a dangerous wrestler who can put someone on their back from anywhere.”
Other Parkside wrestlers expect-ed to make significant contributions in 2011-12 include junior James Malechek and freshmen Davien Wil-lis, Collin Crume and Jake Papke.
In their 2011-12 opener on Nov. 5, the Rangers participated in the Pointer Open at UW-Stevens Point.

Two Parkside wrestlers – Bera at 157 pounds and Rynish at 174 – earned individual championships.
Malechek took second place at 285 pounds, Papke (125) and fresh-man Brandt Welcher (141) grabbed thirds, freshman Carlos Garcia (133) was fourth, and junior Arik Yde (141), freshman Nick Fishback (157) and freshman Monterail John-son (174) were fifth.
Parkside continued its season Nov. 13 at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open, hosted by Iowa State University. Rynish again garnered the 174-pound crown, moving to 8-0 on the young season. The other three Rangers who placed were Crume at 133 pounds (third place), Willis at 197 (fourth) and Malechek at 285 (fourth).
“It was a real strong performance from the guys,” Lewis said. “These guys are scrappers. The whole team performed really well. In fact, we’ve got a hard-working, tough group of kids up and down the roster.”
Lewis’ assistant coach is Eric Robinson. Student assistant coaches are Ryan Woods and Curtis Hines.
Since Lewis’ arrival at Parkside in 1995, the program has produced 48 All-Americans, 10 national finalists and four national champions, and the team has finished in the nation’s top 10 nine times since 2000.
Prior to his coaching career, Lewis was a standout wrestler at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He finished his collegiate career
15th on the Eagles’ all-time wins list. He was 105-37 at UW-La Crosse, including back-to-back confer-ence championships as a 167-pounder in 1990 and 1991. He earned NAIA All-American honors in 1991 by finishing sixth in the country in the 167-pound weight class.

Inaugural Bowl-a-Thon The UW-Parkside Baseball Team will kick off their Inaugural Bowl-A-Thon on Dec. 4 at noon. The Bowl-A-Thon will take place at Gut-tormsen Recreation Center (GRC) in Kenosha, At the Bowl-A-Thon, for a price of $25 dollars per person, registration will include 3 games of bowling at 9 pin tap, pizza, soda pop, a silent auction, and a raffle. 2012 wInTer ClInICUW-Parkside golf coach Mark Olsen has released the information for his 2012 Winter Golf Clinic. The program will hold four, 45-minute group lessons Feb. 7-10. Olsen will lead the staff along with members of the UW-Parkside golf team and guest PGA professionals. There are three separate sessions on those days at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30

This week in Ranger sports
We have transitioned completely into the winter season, but still have a couple of loose ends to tie up. Congratulations to Hope Christie on her performance at the NCAA Championships as she earned All-American status by finishing 35th. Also congrats to Evan Lewan-dowski on a great sophomore season. He was a little over a minute shy of being an All-American, but great things lie ahead for Evan and the men’s cross country program.
Despite the Thanksgiving holiday this week, the bas-ketball teams have full slates.

Men’s BasketballLast week: Defeated Saginaw Valley, 83-68; defeated

This week: Nov. 22 at Michigan Tech, 6 p.m.; Nov. 26 at Ferris State, 2 p.m.
Of note: The Ranger men’s basketball team is off to a 3-0 start after a great weekend in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic hosted here at UW-Parkside. The men used a big second half on Friday to claim a 15-point win over Saginaw before a thrilling finish Saturday for the program’s best start since 2007-08.
Trailing by a point with 22 seconds left, Jeremy Saffold knocked down a pair of free throws to give the Rangers the lead. Northwood had a couple of chances at the rim in the closing seconds, but Steve Jaskulske was able to knock the ball loose on a couple of occa-sions before the buzzer finally sounded on a stirring victory. Leneal Harris led UWP with 19 points and six assists in the contest.
This week the Rangers will continue their run through the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Confer-ence with two more games against regional rivals.
On Nov. 22, Parkside will travel to Michigan Tech to take on the Huskies at 6 p.m. Please reference the Rangers schedule for links on how to follow along with the action.
Saturday the team will travel to Ferris State for a 2 p.m. tip against the Bulldogs. Steve Kratochvil will be with the team and have the call from Ferris. Again, please check back for the appropriate links to listen to Steve with the Rangers in Michigan.

This week in Ranger sports The Rangers won their
20th straight home game Nov. Nov. 19 with a 67-50 win over Saginaw Valley State. Jadee Rooney led three players in double figures with 17 points on five, three-pointers. Kaitlyn Bettiga was perfect from the field in scoring 13 points and adding six assists. Jenna Endisch provided a big spark off the bench knocking down three, three-pointers and fin-ishing with 11 points.
This week they’ll look to continue their home success as they are in the midst of eight in a row here at Parkside. The Nov. 22 game is a 5:30 p.m. tip against Trinity International. Steve Kratochvil and Jim Kramer will have the call on www.gatewaysportsweb.org.
After the holiday, the team will host a pair of games on the weekend. Nov. 26 will be a Top 25 showdown with #21 Grand Valley State University at 1 p.m. The Lakers will visit for first time since 2004 after reach-ing the NCAA Tournament a year ago. The two teams met in Allendale, Mich., with the Rangers coming up on the short end. Both teams are expected to contend for NCAA spots again this year, so it promises to be a great matchup. If you’re not able to make it out, Dave Buchanan will have the call online.
The week concludes with Upper Iowa visiting on Nov. 27 at 1 p.m. The Peacocks and Rangers haven’t meet since 2007 when they played an overtime contest here at the DeSimone Gymnasium. It’ll be another im-portant in-region contest for Parkside before entering conference play.

WrestlingLast week: Eight wrestlers
placed at the Concordia Open, including one champion in Luke Rynish.
This week: Off (Host Wisconsin Open on Dec. 3 at 9 a.m.)
Of note: The wrestling team will take this weekend off after another great weekend on the mats.
The Rangers had eight grapplers place at the Concor-dia Open in Mequon, Wis., on Nov. 26. Luke Rynish won his third straight title to lead the way while Davien Willis (197) and Nick Fishback (157) each took third.
Daniel Argueta and Col-lin Crume each finished in fifth place at 157 and 133 respectively. Jake Papke (125) and Arik Yde were sixth (141) while Zach Noel was seventh at 141.
Rynish was perfect once again, going 5-0 as he cruised to the title at 174. He finished things off with a 19-7 victory over Danny Balderas from Elmhurst. He was named the tournament’s most outstanding wres-tler.
Willis went 7-1 on the day to claim third at 197. He earned third with a 6-4 sudden victory over Danny Vargas from Elmhurst, Ill.
Fishback lost to the eventual champion, but bounced back for third as well. He beat Cameron Wagner from Wartburg, 10-6, to win his final match of the day.
The team returns to action on Dec. 3 when it hosts the 40th Annual Wisconsin Open here at UW-Parkside. That tournament will start at 9 a.m.

Hope Christieearned a spot on the NCAA Division II All-American team with her performance at the NCAA champion-ships in Spokane, Wash. In snowy conditions, Christie finished the 6K course in a time of 22:13 to place 35th, Nov. 19.
Shannon Becker & Lauki’i Cheng Shannon Becker, was named to the Daktronics All-Midwest Region First Team by the region’s sports information directors for the third consecutive year. The UW-Parkside women’s basketball team overcame a sloppy start to defeat the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals, 67-50, Nov. 19 at the DeSimone Gymnasium. The Rangers improved their record to 2-1 on the year. This win for the Rangers marks their 20th straight at home and improves their record to 35-1 in their last 36 home games.“If we can get some production both offensively and defen-sively from some kids off the bench, that’s going to make us a much better basketball team,” said UWP head coach Jenny Kenesie.The game was the first of eight consecutive home games for the Rangers. A game with a large regional impact takes place Saturday, Nov. 26, at 1 p.m., when Grand Valley State pays a visit. The Rangers are ranked No. 16 in the country and Grand Valley State is No. 21.

Kaitlyn Bettiga made all four of her perimeter shots, including three from behind the arc, and was 2-2 at the free throw line against the Cardinals for 13 points. UW-Parkside women’s soccer players Shannon Becker and Lauki’i Cheng were both named to Daktronics All-Midwest Region teams by the region’s sports informa-tion directors. Becker was chosen to the first team, while Cheng made the second team.“It’s a great honor for Shannon and Lauki’i and indicative of how hard they work both on and off the field,” said head coach Troy Fabiano. “They’ve both put in the time to make not only themselves better, but their teammates better as well. It’s great to see them rewarded for their efforts.”Both players have become staples on the all-region squads during their careers. Becker is now a four-time all-region recipient. She earned second team honors as a freshman and was on the first team each of the past three years. Cheng is all-region for the third time in her three seasons of competition. She was a first-teamer as a freshman and has been named to the second team the past two seasons.

The second half was key in each of UW-Parkside’s men’s basketball games in the Coaches versus Cancer Classic at the DeSimone Gymnasium. On Nov. 18, the Rangers out-scored Saginaw Valley State, 55-41, in the second half to pull away from the Cardinals and score an 83-68 victory. A 13-0 run sparked the victors. The following day, UWP was down by 13 points early in the second half to Northwood, before making a ferocious comeback in beating the Timber-wolves, 71-70. The Rangers put up a tough defensive stand on the last possession as time expired, giving them a 3-0 record on the young season.“We needed a game like this where we came out on the winning end,” UWP head coach Luke Reigel told the media after the Northwood game. “We really executed in the half court when we needed to.”

The wrestlin’ Rangers had their third consecutive Saturday of open meet action Nov. 19. UW-Parkside headed north to participate in the annual Concordia Open in Mequon and came away with one title and two third-place finishes. A total of 320 student-athletes participated in the event. No team scores were kept.“It was a good day, but a long day,” said UWP head coach Gregg Lewis. “There were lots of matches and guys are beat up. I’m really proud of the guys and how they com-peted. It was a lot of fun. Teammates were really support-ing each other in some really exciting matches. Everyone did their part.”The Rangers will take this coming weekend off before hosting the Wisconsin Open on Saturday, Dec. 3. Matches begin in the Petretti Fieldhouse at 9 a.m.
