Studying abroad in India truly is an experience like no other. It is complicated country and is both one of the most difficult and challenging experiences I have had, as well as one of the most wonderful.

WHY CHOOSE UW IN INDIA?

YOUR CHOICES ARE BUILT INTO THE CURRICULUM. Both programs in India are packed with a high degree of flexibility. In Varanasi, focus your directed research project on religion, politics, public health…whatever ignites your curiosity. You also choose a tutorial—from Sanskrit to Sitar—to study one-on-one with an instructor. In Delhi, you’ll select intensive Hindi or Urdu, or tell us your preferences for your internship and pair them with an elective that complements your professional goals.

THE HOST CITIES SERVE AS CLASSROOMS. Varanasi’s sacred position on the Ganges River, to say nothing of its position as an epicenter of traditional arts and culture, make it rich with learning opportunities. Observe religious and cultural practices up close and gain a nuanced understanding of India that is usually off-limits to outsiders. And as for Delhi, the nation’s capital is an axis for many spheres of activity—business and the economy, politics and policy, and history and the arts. Engaging with Delhi offers you windows into engaging with all of India.

UW HAS BEEN IN INDIA FOR OVER HALF A CENTURY. University of Wisconsin launched the Varanasi program—one of the first in India—in 1961. Your professors not only may have heard of the program, they may have attended it. Almost 60 years later, UW-Madison faculty continue to inspire and develop the curriculum. But you don’t need to be a UW student to attend. Students from all schools are welcome to apply.

Varanasi can be a hard place to live as an outsider, but I’ve met some of the most amazing people here. They have shown me much kindness when I needed it the most. The more you can invest in the relationships with those around you, the better your experience will be.

— Madeline Titus, American University, Spring 2018

HOMESTAYS & APARTMENTS

You’ll live in a family-run student guesthouse, in an apartment with a local roommate, or with a host family. No matter what you choose, you’ll form a community of friends in Varanasi—for movie nights, street food taste tests, or trips to the tailor to get an outfit custom made.

ORIENTATION & TRAVELING SEMINAR

Your semester starts with an orientation in Delhi. Later, we’ll take you on a study tour—head to Chennai, Khajuraho, or Amritsar to visit temples and archaeological sites, and learn more about the lifestyles and religious traditions that make up the rich tapestry of Indian culture.

UW-MADISON & CET

The UW in India program is jointly operated by University of Wisconsin-Madison and CET Academic Programs. Launched by UW-Madison in 1961, the program broke new ground for students interested in India’s languages, religions, and cultures. In 2015, CET and UW-Madison forged a new partnership in order to bring to the program the best of both worlds—UW’s long-time presence and expertise in South Asian Studies, and CET’s extensive experience managing programs in nontraditional destinations. UW-Madison manages admissions, billing, and transcripting, and advises CET on academic and programming matters.
