13 Day Small Group Experience Broome | Windjana Gorge | Mitchell Falls | Kununurra | Purnululu National Park
Day 1. Broome, Boab Prison Tree, Gibb River Road, Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek. Our exploration of the awe-inspiring Kimberley region begins early this morning. We visit the unusual Boab Prison Tree, believed to be more than 1,500 years old. We then continue our journey along the Gibb River Road, a remote Outback highway that accesses some of the Kimberley’s most spectacular destinations. At Windjana Gorge, marvel at sheer cliffs that tower above white sands and see the ancient marine fossils embedded in the gorge walls. You may catch a glimpse of crocodiles lazing on the banks of the Lennard River. Continue to remarkable Tunnel Creek and, with torch in hand, wade through the underground waters to view the oasis.
Two Night Stay: EXCLUSIVE! Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge, with private ensuites, Gibb River Road. LD
Day 2. Bell Gorge, Hiking and Swimming. The reward for hiking into Bell Gorge is a swim below the waterfall where rugged cliffs surround a series of tiered waterholes. Alternatively go bird-watching and keep an eye out for the wedge tail eagle. There are a number of hikes available for those who feel more energetic. BLD
Day 3. Galvans Gorge, Barnett River Gorge, Drysdale River Station. Our journey today takes us through the heart of Kimberley cattle country to discover some of the region’s most secluded gorges and swimming holes. At Galvans Gorge, a short walk leads to a picturesque waterhole. Inspect the rock art on the gorge walls and take a leisurely swim. Beautiful Barnett River Gorge provides an idyllic setting to enjoy lunch under shady gum trees, while keeping an eye out for the unique birdlife that inhabits the area. Turning off the Gibb River Road, travel north along the Kalumburu Road, heading towards the isolated Mitchell Plateau. Stay: Drysdale River Station, Kalumburu Road. BLD
Day 4. Mitchell Plateau, King Edward River, Gwion (Bradshaw) Art. Ascending the Mitchell Plateau, explore Wandjina and Gwion (Bradshaw) art galleries and swim in the clear waters at King Edward River. We have included a helicopter flight over Mitchell Falls back to the vehicle (or, if you prefer, hike back with your guide). Longer helicopter flights over the coastline are available at an additional expense. BLD

Day 7. Gibb River Road, El Questro Wilderness Park. Our journey takes us back onto the rugged Gibb River Road, where we ford the Durack River, named after the region’s most famous pioneering family. This afternoon we arrive at one of the Kimberley’s most well known cattle stations, El Questro Wilderness Park – a one million-acre working cattle station in the Kimberley wilderness. Perhaps experience a challenging hike into Emma Gorge and reward yourself with a refreshing dip in the inviting waterhole under a droplet waterfall which greets you on arrival. This evening, relax over a home-style dinner at Emma Gorge Resort. Stay: Tented cabins with spacious ensuites at Emma Gorge Resort, El Questro. BLD
Day 8. El Questro, Wyndham, Parry’s Lagoon. In the shadow of Livistona Palms, Zebedee Springs provides the perfect setting for a relaxing soak in the natural thermal pools. Feeling refreshed, re-board our custom-built 4WD vehicle and farewell the Gibb River Road as our journey continues to Wyndham, taking in spectacular views of the Cambridge Gulf. After experiencing lunch at an iconic Outback pub we visit Parry’s Lagoon, a bird watchers paradise en-route to Kununurra. 8 Day (GKC08) passengers depart the tour. Two Night Stay: Kununurra Country Club Resort, Kununurra. BLD
Day 9. Ord River and Lake Kununurra Cruise. Kununurra is the gateway to the untamed and adventurous Kimberley region. Spend time discovering the town this morning. The construction of Lake Argyle, the largest man-made lake in the Southern Hemisphere, has transformed the dry and barren landscapes of Kununurra into a prosperous agricultural industry. Later, we join a spectacular wildlife cruise on the mighty Ord River and witness a dramatic sunset as we cruise Lake Kununurra, rated one of the best cruises in Australia. B
Day 10. Echidna Chasm, Purnululu National Park. We venture deep into one of the most recognisable icons of the Kimberley today, Purnululu National Park, a wilderness region that was awarded World Heritage status in 2003. A hike into Echidna Chasm unveils a spectacular cleft in the rock massif. The famous domes of the Bungle Bungle Range were largely unknown to Europeans until the mid-1980s. Galleries of ancient Aboriginal rock art indicate Purnululu has been home to local Indigenous people for thousands of years. During our time here, we’ll uncover the ancient history of the region.
Two Night Stay: EXCLUSIVE! Stay in tented ensuite cabins at Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, Purnululu National Park. BLD
Day 11. Cathedral Gorge, Beehive Domes. The Purnululu National Park is just waiting to be discovered today. Hike along rugged Piccaninny Creek and explore the impressive Cathedral Gorge, where you can test the natural acoustics of this massive limestone cavern. Walk among the famous striped beehive domes as your guide brings the natural history of the range to life. Learn about bushtucker, bush medicine and the area’s significance to local Aboriginals. There’s also time for an optional helicopter flight (own expense). Enjoy drinks as you watch the sun set over the Bungle Bungle Range this evening, before retiring to your comfortable bed at the award-winning Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge. BLD
Day 12. Halls Creek, Fitzroy Crossing. 12 Day (GKC12) passengers depart the tour on a scenic flight to Kununurra. Farewell the Bungle Bungle, as the famous domes disappear in our rear-vision mirror. After two weeks of travelling on Outback roads you’ll relish the smooth ride of the Great Northern Highway as we travel to Halls Creek. See the unusual China Wall, a natural quartz formation, before heading to Fitzroy Crossing. Stay: Fitzroy River Lodge, Fitzroy Crossing. BLD
Day 13. Geikie Gorge Cruise, Broome. Welcome to Geikie Gorge, where annual flooding has created a bleached effect on the limestone walls. Board a unique cruise along this stunning gorge, where a local guide will teach us more about the significance of the local flora and fauna. Later, we return to Broome. BL

Kings Creek Station
Kings Creek Station was established in

pastoralist in the region, William Liddle –

the station flourished. Today, it remains a
working cattle and camel station, as well
as the idyllic Outback setting for APT’s
exclusive Kings Canyon Wilderness Lodge.
Easy access to Watarrka National Park
Watarrka National Park comprises a
striking natural landscape of rugged
ranges, hidden rocky crags, waterholes
and gorges. This unique environment has
been evolving for more than 440 million
years, as evident by the marine fossils
embedded in its sandstone walls. It is still
a refuge for an abundance of native wildlife.
The region has also been home to the
Luritja people for the last 20,000 years.
The feature of Watarrka National Park is
indisputably Kings Canyon, a huge formation
of ancient rocks. Its sheer walls rise up
170 metres from Kings Creek, providing
breathtaking views across the canyon.
