Old city with a big heart

Utrecht is almost 2000 years old.

Stroll down the streets and along the canals

in the Utrecht Museum Quarter, the cultural

treasury in the very heart of the city, to

sample the pleasant, intimate atmosphere

for which Utrecht is famous.

In the Middle Ages, Utrecht was the ecclesiastical

centre of the Netherlands and its skyline was

dominated by dozens of church towers.

Today, the city has eight medieval churches.

With a height of 112 metres, the Dom tower is

the highest church tower in the Netherlands and

the eye-catcher of the ‘Dom city’, which functions

as a landmark throughout the city.

Concise history Around 47 AD, the Romans built the Trajectum

castellum (fortress) to reinforce the northern

border of their empire along the Rhine where

the Domplein is now located. Late 7th century,

the English missionary Willibrord designed the

fortress as a mission and a small town developed.

Over the next centuries, Utrecht developed into

a religious establishment and trade underwent

unprecedented growth through the construction

of a medieval harbour complex of canals,

wharves and wharf cellars. Utrecht remained

the largest and most important city in the

Netherlands until the 16th century.

The DomThe Dom tower is the pride of Utrecht;

as was the Dom cathedral, until a tornado

swept away the nave on the summer evening

of 1 August 1674!

How could this happen? In order to collect

money for the construction of the cathedral,

clergymen travelled through the diocese of

Utrecht to sell indulgences for absolution or

moderation of sins. After the construction of

the current Dom church (1254-1517) and Dom

tower (1321-1382), there was no money left

and the nave was ‘finished’ without flying

buttresses, with shortened buttresses and a

level wooden ceiling instead of stone vaults.

Was this construction the ‘culprit’? Historians

assume it was bad luck; the whirlwind caused

lower pressure in the church and thus brought

about the collapse of the nave. The contours of

the nave are depicted in the black cobbles on

the Dom square. The high trees represent the

then walls and covering.

Utrecht Art CityUtrecht is the city with the largest density of cultural treasures in the Netherlands, which is why this city is one of the participants in the Holland Art Cities event. Ten top museums in Utrecht, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague present their largest art collection per km2 in the world. Following is a selection of the Utrecht programme:

Centraal Museum‘Food for Thought’, Alexander van SlobbeFebruary 2010 – 16 May 2010 An overview of the work by leading Dutch fashion designer Alexander van Slobbe from 1988 until today; he has been a household word in Dutch fashion design for over twenty years.

‘Rietveld’s Universe’20 October 2010 – mid-January 2011 This major international exhibition presents work by furniture maker and architect Gerrit Th. Rietveld (1888-1964) within the context of international modernism. The Centraal Museum Utrecht has the largest collection of Rietveld designs in the world.

Museum Catharijneconvent ‘InGoud’, Aziz Bekkaoui12 June – 29 August 2010With his unique vision, capacity to associate and styling, Dutch fashion designer, performance artist and artist Aziz Bekkaoui guarantees an intriguing exhibition: ‘InGoud’. The magnificent, gold-deco-rated paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, chalices and garments in the Museum Catharijneconvent collection show the tradition in religion that gold is the only material worthy to honour the divine.www.catharijneconvent.nl

Trajectum Lumen

February 2010 – 2018From February, the historic Utrecht city centre will be the backdrop of theatrical light art. The Trajectum Lumen route takes in churches and basements, bridges and castles, canals and wharves which in the evening will be transformed to a work of art in light. The walk is available at the VVV Utrecht, Domplein 9 (D2), the Apollo Hotel City Centre, Vredenburg 14 (C1), and the Information centre of the municipality of Utrecht, Vinkenburgstraat 26, Neude entrance (D1).

Rietveld year Utrecht is the city of Gerrit Rietveld, who lived and worked in this city his entire life. In 1918, he desig-ned the famous red and blue armchair that made him famous. He built 600 houses in the city and in 1924 designed the Rietveld Schröderhuis. 2010 is all about this famous designer. In addition to the main Rietveld’s Universe exhibition, there are various other activities that feature this influential artist and designer.www.centraalmuseum.nl

Rietveld Schröder House

The Rietveld Schröderhuis; the masterpiece by

Gerrit Rietveld, highlight of ‘De Stijl’, icon of the

city of Utrecht and monument on the World

Heritage List, is an absolute must. Utrecht architect

Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) built it for Truus

Schröder. This house is the only building ever to

have been realised according to the architectonic

principles of artistic trend De Stijl. The typical Stijl

colours red, blue and yellow, combined with black,

white, grey and the relation between interior and

exterior and the unity between separate furniture

and fixed components in the design are typical.

A visit to the meticulously devised Rietveld

Schröderhuis is a true discovery where each part

of the house tells its own story. There are guided

tours as well as audio tours.

Peace Treaty of Utrecht: In 2013, the 300th anniversary of the Peace Treaty of Utrecht will be celebrated in a grand way

On 11 April 1713, the Peace Treaty of Utrecht was concluded; a treaty that ended almost two centuries

of war which expanded throughout the world. Prior to this historic event, for eighteen months Utrecht

had functioned as the host, partner and stage for an international company that determined Europe’s

future. During the negotiations, festive and cultural events took place that contributed to the dialogue

between the various cultures. This was the first peace ever to be realised by diplomacy, with thanks to

Utrecht’s hospitality.

In order to incite everyone for the grand celebration in 2013, we are introducing art and culture at

wonderful Utrecht locations: at fortresses, castles and the vacant Soesterberg air base in summer, for

instance. There will be lectures in the Nicolaikerk church in collaboration with the University of Utrecht,

and programmes by and for Utrecht residents in the various districts throughout the year. In spring, a

free party will be held on the Dom Square, with DJs on the Dom Tower.

And the real festivities will start on 11 April 2013 after a run-up of a few years. Utrecht is looking for

the best achievable: an impressive and unforgettable programme that equals that of 1713. Utrecht,

city and region of knowledge and culture, has much to offer, so be sure to keep up-to-date at

Accessibility and practical information

Station area & AccessibilityUtrecht is centrally located and the ideal ope-

rating base for a (city) visit to the Netherlands.

Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport are just 30

minutes by train; Rotterdam and The Hague at

45 minutes. Daily international trains from and

to Brussels (2 hours), Cologne (2.5 hours) and

Paris (3,5 hours). For more info, go to

www.ns.nl or www.nshighspeed.nl

The station area is undergoing a ‘facelift’ with

the ultimate goal to combine the station and

the old city centre. Inconvenience is limited as

much as possible and Utrecht remains easily

accessible. For more info, go to T 0031 (0)30 286
