Happy New Year! The Library will close at 12 noon on Thursday, December 31, and will be closed all day, Friday, January 1. Have a safe and happy holiday. Winter Library Club Antarctic Adventure, Winter Library Club 2016, begins January 16. Families (at least one parent and one child—baby through grade 8) are invited to participate by reading and doing fun activities together, both at home and at the Library. Families earn small rewards as they check off activities on a special activity log. Families can register and pick up an activity log at the Youth Services Desk beginning Saturday, January 16. Special events during Winter Library Club include a “Science & Art Fair,” on Saturday, January 30, and “Angel’s Art Adventure” on Saturday, February 27. Read on in this eNewsletter for more information about the “Science & Art Fair.” High school students and adults can participate in Antarctic Adventure by reading or listening to three books and returning a reading log to the Reference Desk where they can select a small reward and be entered into a drawing for additional prizes at the end of Winter Library Club. Reading logs will be available at the Reference Desk beginning January 16. Antarctic Adventure runs through Monday, February 29. Winter Library ClubAntarctic Adventure, Winter Library Club 2016, begins January 16. Families (at least one parent and one child—baby through grade 8) areinvited to participate by reading and doing fun activities together, both at home and at the Library. The One Book, One Batavia 2016 selection is The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle. Library events related tothe book include a book discussion and a showing of a classic Sherlock Holmes movie in February, and a New Lyceum Lectureseries program featuring a Sherlock Holmes expert and an old­time radio show featuring two classic Sherlock Holmes shortstories in March. For Your Convenience The Library now has circulating book bags. Did you pick out more materials than you planned? Did it start raining since you walked into theLibrary? Now you can check out a book bag along with your books and other materials. The durable, water­resistant book bags have a loanperiod of 28 days and are available at the Check Out Desk. The book bags are made possible by a grant from the Friends of the BataviaPublic Library. Board of Library Trustees MeetingTuesday, January 19,at 7 p.m., in the Library Conference Room. Meetings are open to the public.

Batavia Public Library Writers WorkshopMonday, January 11, 6:30 p.m. Do you write poetry, short stories, or novels? Are you looking for helpful feedback fromother writers? Then come to this workshop, which meets from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on the second Monday of the month.Registration is not required. News from the Friends of the Batavia Public LibraryDo you need a New Year’s gift for a friend or loved one? Purchase a Book Lover's Calendar from the Friends at theCheck Out Desk for $6 each (originally $8).

Mark your calendars! Beginning in 2016, the Friends’ monthly used book sales will be held on the second Saturdayof the month, from 9:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. As in previous years, there is no sale in June. New materials are added to the sale shelves everymonth. The next sale is Saturday, January 9. See you there! Save the date! The Friends’ annual meeting will be held on Thursday, March 24, at the Library. More details will be included in future issuesof Wired.

Sundays on Stage—Ron and Sandie’s Aussie Show: Sunday, January 24, 2 p.m. Spend an hour in theLand Down Under! Learn about famous Australian actors, what Australians love to eat and drink, and how to“speak Australian.” Ron and Sandie perform old and new Aussie songs and share their knowledge of Aussieanimals—the koala, kookaburra, wombat, Tasmanian devil, emu, platypus, dingo, and kangaroo. Registrationrequired. Adult Anime Club: Wednesday, January 27, 6:30 p.m. Adults ages 18 and older are invited to watch anime onDVD and meet other adult anime and manga enthusiasts. February book discussion selection: The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle Books Between Bites: Thursday, January 21, 12 p.m. Barbara Kalina, a lifelong Batavian and former literature and historyteacher in Batavia schools, who is fascinated by those who think outside the box, discusses The Wright Brothers by DavidMcCullough. The Wrights’ dream to fly began with deceptively simple questions: How do birds fly, maneuver, and use aircurrents? McCullough’s inspiring account of the Wright brothers’ highly intelligent, vastly curious, and untiringly persistent pursuitof their dream reveals the character traits that led to their stunning success. Computer Classes for Adults

The Library offers a variety of 1­hour, hands­on computer classes (from "Introduction to Microsoft Word" to "Genealogyon the Internet"). Registration required; call (630) 879­1393, ext. 200.

Computer Coaching Sessions: Basic computer training is available at the Library. Schedule an appointment with atechnology assistant for a one­hour, one­on­one coaching session based on your individual needs. Sessions areavailable Monday–Thursday, 4–8 p.m. Batavia Public Library card required. Call the Reference Desk, (630) 879­1393,ext. 200, for details.

All About Scholarships: Sunday, January 3, 1–2 p.m. Learn basic tips on how to apply for scholarships from theIllinois Student Assistance Commission. Registration required. FAFSA Form Workshop: Tuesday, January 5, 7–8:30 p.m. Have you completed your FAFSA (Free Application forFederal Student Aid) form? Get answers to your questions from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission.

Inclusion Game Night: Wednesday, January 13, 7–8 p.m. Teens of all abilities—and their families and friends—are invited to the Library tomeet new people and play a board game or card game in a relaxed setting. No registration required.

Anime Club: Thursday, January 14, 6:30–9 p.m. Teens are invited to the Library to watch anime, play games,and meet other anime and manga enthusiasts. No registration required. Inclusion Movie Night: Tuesday, January 26, 7–8 p.m. Teens and young adults of all abilities—and their familiesand friends—are invited to watch movies and meet new people in a relaxed setting. No registration required.

Programs for Families

Drop­In Craft: Stop by and make a craft to take home, Thursday, January 7, 10 a.m.–12 p.m.; or Saturday, January 16, 1–3 p.m. Childrenage 6 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. No registration required.

Chess Knight: Students ages 8 and older, teens, and adults are invited to play chess for an hour, Tuesdays, January 12,26, and February 9, 23, 7 p.m. Participants should have a basic knowledge of how to play. No registration required.

Chill Out at the Library: Drop by for some chilly weather activities including games, puzzles, a craft, and hot chocolate, Wednesday,January 13, 4–5:15 p.m. We’ll have some winter­themed books ready for you to check out. No registration required. Antarctic Adventure Winter Library Club: Come on an adventure at the Library during the Winter Library Club, Saturday, January 16–Monday, February 29. Families (at least one parent and one child) may complete the activities described on the log sheet for rewards.Participants must be Batavia Public Library cardholders or have children attending a Batavia school. All Winter Library Club activity logsmust be turned in by 9 p.m., February 29. Bird Watch: Do some indoor bird watching in the Youth Services department, January 16–February 29, with toolsfrom our Observation Station. Winter Library Club participants earn credit on their activity log for completing this search.Pick up directions at the Observation Station and start bird watching! Movie at the Library: Join us for a movie, Monday, January 18, 2 p.m. Please call for movie title, length, and rating.No registration required. Middle School Advisory Council: Students in grades 6–8 will meet Monday, January 11, 4 p.m., to plan activities for students at theLibrary and work on projects to benefit the Library and community. We'll also eat pizza and have fun. New members welcome! Registrationrequired.

Anybook Club: Students in grades 4–8 are invited to join us for snacks, games, and book­related banter, Tuesday, January 12, 4 p.m. Youcan talk about the books you’ve read and we’ll tell you about some you might like. You don’t have to read anything in particular, just come toenjoy book­related activities. Registration required. Book Gems: A book discussion club for students in grades 2–3, Tuesday, January 19, 6:30 p.m. Join us for discussion and activities.Registration required; reserve a copy of the book when registering. Card Games: Students ages 7–14, are invited to play Pokémon, Yu­Gi­Oh, Uno, Go­Fish, and other card games, Thursday, January 21, 4p.m. Bring a deck! No registration required. Curiosity Club: Through books, games, and experiments, students in grades K–2 will explore a variety of science and nature topics,Wednesday, January 27, 4:30 p.m. Each participant will receive a take­home activity. Baby Play ’n’ Learn: Drop by for playtime for babies ages 23 months and younger and their parents/caregivers, Saturday, January 9, 11a.m. Meet other caregivers, enjoy playtime with your baby, and see examples of early literacy activities. Baby Storytime—Walkers: An interactive program with stories, rhymes, and more for babies through 23 months who are walking and theircaregivers, Fridays, January 15–March 4, 11 a.m. We ask that alternate care arrangements be made outside of class for older siblings.Registration required. Preschool Drop­In Storytime: Stories, flannelboards, and more for preschoolers ages 3–6, Fridays, January 15–March 4, 1 p.m. Youngersiblings are welcome.
