President’s Message

Edgy Watercolorists: Let’s Start a Conversation!

Watercolor has a publicity problem. This according to Apryll

Killpack, Gallery Director, and Susan Bohmholdt, Art Curator,

from Alpine Art. Many patrons of this intimate gallery and

frame shop do not perceive watercolor paintings as having the

same value as their oil or acrylic counterparts. Susan says

she has come to realize the opposite is actually true.

Watercolor is harder to master and more expensive to

produce, certainly to frame! What then are we to do? Should

we stay in our studios and sulk, feeling superior and misunderstood, yet disgruntled

by the unfairness of it all? Susan and Apryll believe we need to start a

conversation, not only with the potential art patrons, but also with the staffs of art

institutions. “An Art purchase,” said Susan, “is personal. The work has to speak to

the buyer. Original art must feel unique and valuable. Often times, a watercolor

work looks just like a print that a consumer can purchase for a fraction of the cost.”

Oil and acrylic paintings provide a more immediate interaction. Viewers can touch

the painting surface and see the mark of the painter. The glass on a watercolor,

perhaps, creates a barrier between the viewer and the art. Presentation is key in all

art media, but most especially with watercolor. If framing materials are shabby, a

patron will spot it in a second. Watercolor artists need to present work in such a

way as to show off its original uniqueness. Watercolor needs to look classic and

rich.

Patrons are also extremely interested in the artist. What is the artist’s background?

Why did she paint that particular painting? Artists need to take the time to prepare

a biography and artist’s statement for each showing of their work. These materials

often “clinch the deal.”

Finally, let’s have a conversation about the watercolor painting process (and not

just at meetings with other watercolorists). Why do watercolor painters leave so

much white? In other media, leaving the raw white canvas showing is a sign of an

amateur. Susan was intrigued to learn the opposite is true in watercolor. “Wow!

Let’s talk about that!” she says. What makes watercolor hard? What is all this

about pigment-to-water ratio on the brush, and mastering the timing of a wet

surface? How do we create hard edges verses soft edges? Let’s talk about how

the transparent nature of our medium shows the history of every mark, making it

the least forgiving of all.

Wow! Watercolorists are the real masters! We have known that all along, right?

Ha! Let’s take to the streets and airwaves then! Let’s talk and write about

watercolor, spend time preparing our professional materials, invest in quality

presentation, embrace new ideas, and be ready to show off our stuff!

Light Up Your Landscapes

Award-winning artist Roland Lee will

guide us through the steps he uses to

create exciting studio paintings from

on-location sketchbook studies and

ordinary reference photos. We will do

several painting studies in class and

complete one small painting. We will

work both inside the SUP building and

outdoors (weather permitting - bring

appropriate clothing and supplies for

outdoor work).

"This workshop is designed to help

artists become better interpreters

of the landscape by learning to see

what nature does to catch our

attention. Our role is not to

duplicate nature but to create new

images based on our personal

experiences."

Roland is a Signature Member of the

National Watercolor Society and has

been painting transparent watercolors

for over 35 years. He has written

articles about painting for The Artist's

Magazine and the Drawing Board

Magazine, and he has been featured

in Art West, Western Art Collector and

several books, including Splash 11,

from North Light Books. Roland has

conducted workshops throughout

America and taught art classes at

Dixie State University. He was

recently awarded the Governor's

Mansion Medal for contributions to the

arts of Utah. His original paintings

UWS Paint Outs

We had a great time painting

at Trolley Square in January. In

February, we met at the Harley

Davidson dealership and painted

motorcycles. We had lunch at the

Mediterranean Deli.

In March we will meet up the canyon

at Storm Mountain and April 9th at

Hidden Valley Park (2755 E. Wasatch

Blvd.). Be there or be square!

UWS Small Works 2016 Have you had enough of our winter

cold, snow, slush, and inversion? It

may seem far off in our future, but

warm weather will be here soon and

so will our 2016 UWS Small Works

Exhibition. It’s time to start thinking

about stepping out of the box as this

exhibition encourages artists to

present both traditional and more

experimental work. A prospectus will

be available soon! For now, please

note that your piece, including the

outer measurement of the frame,

may not exceed 144 square inches

(height x width). For example: 12” x

12” = 144”.

We are excited to have Diana

Gardiner, Adjunct Faculty for

Watercolor at the University of Utah,

judge the Exhibition. We are thrilled

3rd Annual Arts in the

Park: Light on the Reef

2016

It’s time to start planning for the 3rd

Annual Arts in the Park: Light on the

Reef event in Capitol Reef!

Not all details have been completed,

but here is some info to get us

started:

Dates: Wed-Sat June 1-4, 2016.

The competition will be divided into

two parts: Small Works which must

be started and completed on

location, and Large Works (not

larger that a 1/2 sheet due to space

constraints). The large works can be

touched up off location if needed to

present a better finished piece.

Last year's event center, the Cougar

Ridge Ranch is not available due to

another scheduled event. This

year’s events will take place on the

site of the Entrada Institute (adjacent

to Robbers Roost).

The daily lunches that we had last

year will not be included this year.

Plan to bring your own food. There

will be one catered artists' dinner as

well as refreshments at the

competition.

Lodging is already tight in Torrey, so

make reservations now! If we can

arrange a dedicated “artist hotel” we

will provide enough notice for you to

cancel your other reservations.

We are building on the success of

the past two years, looking to make

this bigger and better than last year.

This year's jurors will include Shawn

Rossiter of 15 Bytes and Carl

Purcell. If you have ideas for the

future of this event, we want to hear

from you. Contact Maura Naughton

January Member meeting

recap

In addition to speaking on the

importance of goals, Catherine

Darling Hostetter led us through

her creative process at our January

member meeting. Attendees found it

different and fun! UWS members

painted with Tom Howard, Colleen

Reynolds, and Catherine. Three

groups of volunteers started the

creative process by painting on

watercolor paper. They painted

what came to mind – whatever

moved them at that moment.

February Member meeting

recap

What distinguishes a great piece of art

from just a good one? What makes

one painting stand out against all the

others in an art show? We all know

that it is the one which requires the

viewer stop and spend time there. In

order for this to happen, there has to

be some aspect of the piece that

makes it unique.

We were fortunate to have our own

member, Kathy Sutherland as our

presenter for the February general

meeting. She has won many

prestigious awards. Besides the fact

that Kathy’s art has great composition

and watercolor technique, it also

engages the viewer. We now have a

better understanding of some of the

meaning imbedded in Kathy’s

paintings and the background for

some of the symbolism she uses. She

shared memories with us that are

close to her heart.

Kathy has made lemonade out of

lemons by turning a dysfunctional

childhood and a difficult life into great

art. Art has been a source of therapy

for her. Her beautiful art has helped

her to cope with life filled with pain and

trials. Eventually though, it has also

given her independence, strength, joy

and confidence in herself. She also

shares with others and considers her

greatest achievement to be the

success of her students.

Recap

Spike Ress's recent mini workshop

was a treasure trove of knowledge

about using color, value, shapes,

composition and blending layers of

translucent watercolor pigments to

create a beautiful landscape. Layering

is Spike's forte' and his instructions for

creating depth via these layers

was inspiring. Working with Spike's

photos of the canyon landscapes,

brought the outside, into the

classroom. It was a remarkable,

highly-recommended experience!

We laughed, we joked, we painted

from our imaginations and we bonded

with our fellow artists. Catherine's

tried and true method of doing the

background first allows you the

freedom to control the destination of

how your painting will evolve. I've

never been able to finish a painting in

a couple of hours let alone two, all

while having fun splashing some paint

around. The one word for this

workshop would be

"Carefree." Thanks Catherine for such

a wonderful experience!

6 UWS Paint Spot, March/April 2016

Furthermore, she spreads her

message of her own life to compel

victims of abuse to be strong and love

themselves enough to get out of

abusive relationships.

We know Kathy better now and what

makes her tick. It is hard not to love

her. We have certainly gained insight

into what makes her art much deeper

than just pretty pictures

After the volunteers completed their

inputs, created a painting. Members

watched as the artists painted and

talked about their processes. It was a

difficult task in a short amount of

time. At the end of the session, UWS

raffled each painting.

Colleen Reynolds is having a

Studio Spring Cleaning Sale. Art

supplies (palettes, boards, canvas,

misc. cool stuff…), watercolor

month we have new people at our meetings. It had become hard to meet our

education goals. Our group has grown so much that members can no longer stand

around a presenter to observe.

Through our growth and Brenda Brunello’s good management of our workshops,

we have been able to save enough to make this purchase. We are so excited! Our

Vice President did the research and asked the questions, and our Board was able

to quickly make a decision. Thank you, everyone for making this needed upgrade

possible!

Blog Spot: www.uws-cvc.blogspot.com

CVC Member Meetings are held the

second Tuesday of each month at the

Logan Library.

At our February meeting, Dianne Adams taught us how

she paints glass. It was a great demonstration, Diane

helped us learn to see the shapes and the darks and

lights in the glass. I was great to watch her paint with our

brand-new projector and camera.

A new projection system was something our group has

wanted for a long time. We all gain so much from our

Watercolor Society membership. Chief among those

gains are friendly support and education. Education has

become increasingly complicated with the continued

growth of UWS-CVC. We continue to grow. Nearly every
