ExecutiveSummary:
TheLearning&EngagementServices(LES)departmentgainsmuchofitsstrengthfromtheindependentworkofallthelibrariansandtheprojectsinwhichtheyareinvolved,suchasdeepintegrationintoSocialWorkcoursesorassessinglearningoutcomeswhenintegratingnewteachingmethodsintolibraryinstruction.Theseinitiativesarereflectedintheannualself-assessmentlettersofindividuallibrarians.Thisreportreflectsthemorecollaborativeinitiativesofthedepartmentthatmanyorallmembersareinvolvedin.
Themajoraccomplishmentsbelowsummarizethepastyear,andgoalsforthecomingyear.Wearesincerelygratefulforallourstudentworkers,Librarystaff,andUniversitycolleaguesandtheirsupportandcollaborationinsomanyoftheseefforts.Thetableofcontentsprovidesdirectlinksformorein-depthinformationoneachsection.

I. LESMissionStatement
AstheLearning&EngagementServicesUnit,weareactivepartnersinteachingandlearning,supportingfacultyandstudentsbyprovidingexpertiseacrossthecurriculumandatthepointofneed.Thisincludesofferingservicesthatreachallourusers–regardlessoflocation–byprovidingrobustonlinelearningmaterials,strategicin-personinstruction,andeasilyaccessibleinformationviaourwebsite.
Ourtailoredapproachtoteachingstudentssituatesinformationliteracywithinthecontextoftheircoursework.Knowinghowtoaccess,useandcriticallyconsumeinformationisvitaltobuildinga“sociallyandintellectuallyvibrantcommunity”(USUMission).Insupportofthismission,wealsoaimtohelpstudentsunderstandhowinformationliteracyskillstransferforlife.
Ourcollaborationswithcourses,studentpopulations,andcampusandcommunitypartnershelpusprovideinnovative,comprehensiveservices.Ourworkenablesstudentstolearn,discover,andengagewithotherresearchers,withtheirpeers,andwiththebroadercommunity.

II. Instruction
A. ABigPictureLook:Library-Wide
InAugust2018,aLibraryInstructionCommitteewasformedandchargedwithworkingwithallareasofthelibrarywhoprovideinstructionto“Providetrainingandsupportopportunitiesforalllibraryinstructors,developaunifiedprogrammaticvision,developpoliciesandbestpracticeswhenworkingwithfacultyoninstructionrequests,andtowriteacollaborativeannualinstructionreport.”Formoreinformationonthelibrary-wideinstructionprogram,viewtheLibraryInstructionAnnualReport.
FromJuly1,2018–June30,2019,theLibraryInstructionProgramtaughtatotalof779librarysessionsandreached12,316students.Ninety-sevenpercentofthesecourseswereface-to-face,whileonly2%reachedonlinecoursesandonly1%reachedbroadcast.Additionally,onlinematerialswerecreatedandembeddedacrossnumerousdepartments.Formoreofthatdata,seesectionIV(page10).USUcurrentlyhasanestimated15,000FTEstate-wideandonlinestudents.

Mostofthesesessionswerecurricularinstructionortiedtocourses.Thenextmostcommoninteractiontypewaspresentations(6%),followedbyworkshopsandtours(both2%).Inthesesessions,wereachedatotalof12,316students,including10,684undergraduatesand712graduates.Thefigurebelowillustratesthat61%oftheinstructionistaughtbyLES,including69%oftheliaisoninstruction(whichmakesup30%ofthetotalinstruction).

WhilethenameofthemajorresearchassignmentchangedfromthePersuasiveResearchEssaytotheArgumentEssay,themajorresearchrequirementsforENGL2010remainedthesameasthepreviousyear.However,WritingProgramadministrationdidimplementnewscaffoldingassignmentsandprovidedGraduateInstructorswithacurriculumscheduleforthemtofollow.Insupportofthisscaffoldingandschedule,weimplementedpre-scheduledlibrarydaysforGraduateInstructorsusingthreenewlessons:EvaluatingInformation,InvestigatingaTopic,andUsing&UnderstandingSynthesis(https://libguides.usu.edu/2010lessons).ModifiedversionsoftheselessonswerealsomadeavailableforonlineandbroadcastsectionsofENGL2010.Additionally,wemaintainedourface-to-faceintegrationandstrongcollaborationswithAdjunctandLecturerinstructors.Overall,wereached2,735studentsinourENGL2010integration.
AssessmentEffortsOurassessmenteffortsfromthe2017-2018academicyearsupportedthedevelopmentofournewlibrarycurriculumfortheWritingProgram.Assuch,the2018-2019academicyearfocusedprimarilyonthepracticalapplicationandintegrationofthesematerials.Moreover,theWritingProgramwasunderinterimadministrationin2018-2019andduetothistransitionperiod,weheldoffoninstigatinganymajorassessmentprojects.However,weutilizedavenuesofassessmentalreadyinplace,andappliedthecollectionofstudentsurveydatafromFall2018andfeedbackfromlibrariansinunitmeetingstoreviselessonsforSpring2019.TheLibraryCompositionProgramCoordinatorandtwolibraryteachingassistantsalsometeachsemesterwithWritingProgramadministrationtoreviewquestionsandconcerns.
MovingForward:

InFall2019,Dr.BethBuyseriewasappointedasthenewDirectoroftheCompositionProgram.DuetoaccreditationrequirementsfortheUniversity’sGeneralEducationProgram,Dr.BuyserieisleadingtherevisionandcreationofanewCompositionProgramcurriculum.ThedirectionoftheCompositionLibraryInstructionProgramwillrelystronglyonthechangesimplementedoverthenextseveralyearsandthisisanexcitingopportunityforthelibrarytosupportandcontributetoafoundationaluniversitycurriculum.Aswecontinuethroughthistransitionalperiodofleadershipandprogramdevelopment,itwillbeimportantforthelibrarytoinvestigateassessmentopportunitiesforinformationliteracycomponents,strategiesfordevelopingrelationshipsbetweenlibrariansandgraduateinstructors,andsustainablepracticesforsupportingENGL1010andENGL2010.
D. AssignmentDesignFacultyWorkshops
WeheldtwoassignmentdesignworkshopsinDecember2019,movingfromatwicetoonceannualmodel.12facultyfromarangeofcollegesanddepartmentsparticipatedineachworkshop,foratotalof24recruitedthroughpromotionattheETEconference,viasubjectlibrarians,andwithacampusmailer.Participantssubmittedandreviewedoneanother’sassignmentsinadvanceandreceivedcompensationthankstothegeneroussupportofDeanCole.SincethisprogramlaunchedinDecember2016,94facultyhaveparticipated,withbreakdownbycollegeasfollows:

LibGuidesProgramandTrainingAmajorgovernanceinitiativewasundertakingthisyeartoimprovetheusability,accessibilityandcontentmanagementofLibGuides.IncollaborationwithmultiplestakeholdersinLES,anewpolicyforguideauthoringwasdevelopedandapprovedbyExecutiveCouncil.TheWebServicesLibrarian(AlexSundt)hastakenoverastheprimarysystemadministratorfortheLibGuidessystem,whileateamLESstaffserveas“Designers”whoworkdirectlywithliaisonlibrarianstoco-manageandco-createguides.Presentationsonthenewprogramweregiventoallliaisonteamsandatrainingworkshopwasgiventoseveralstaffmembers,withanotherplannedforOctober.

Thisprojectalsointroducedanupdateguidedesign,authorguidelines,andstandardtemplates.SpearheadedbytheOnlineInstructionLibrarian(TeaganEastman),existingguideshavebeenupdatedandstandardized,whileasignificantamountofoutdatedorunusedguideshavebeendeleted.TheseeffortsreducetheriskexposurefortheLibrary,whileimprovingcontentandusabilityforlibrarypatrons.Astheprogrammovesforward,thenewstandardswillensurethatanynewguidesarewell-maintainedanduser-friendly.
UsageDataTherewasaslight4%increaseintotalLibGuideviewsforthe2018-2019year.Additionally,therewasaslightincreaseinthenumberofstudentsreachedthroughUSULibrariesLibGuides’integrationwithCanvas.Thisdemonstratestheimportanceoftheseguidesandtheneedforcontinuedreviewofguidestoensurequality.

B. StatewideCampus&OnlineOutreach
Overthepastyear,wehavecompletedthefollowingprojectstoconnectwithourStatewideCampusandonlinestudentsandfaculty.
• TeamedupwithStatewideCampusMarketingDirectortoupdatethelibrary’smarketingmaterials(flyers,posters,digitalscreens),whichweredistributedatallcampusesandcenters.
• CollaboratedwiththeCoordinatorforOutreach&Peer-LearningtohireaLibraryPeerMentoratUSUBlanding’sLibraryinanefforttoconnectwithmorestudentsattheircampus.Thisinvolvedgettingbuy-inandfundingfromthelibrary’sadministration,StatewideCampusadministration,andthelibrariansatUSUBlanding.
• CollaboratedwiththeCenterforInnovativeDesignandInstruction(CIDI),whichincludesattendingtheirweeklymeetings.TheOnlineLearningLibrarianhaspresented2timesoverthepastyearattheirEmpoweringTeachingExcellenceE-LearningWorkshop,ETEFoundations,andNewFacultyOrientationonembeddinglibraryresourcesinonlineandIVCclasses.Thesepresentationsraiseinstructorawarenessoflibrarye-learningtoolsavailablefortheircourses.
• Workedwiththelibrary’sSystemsdepartmenttoreplacestudentandstaffcomputersatUSUBlanding’sLibrary,whichhadn’tbeendonesince2010.
VI. OpenEducationalResources
LEShasbeenworkingonanumberofopeneducationalresource(OER)initiativestoincreaseawarenessforthetextbookaffordabilitymovementandpromoteadoptionofOERacrosscampus.Overthepastyear,theOERteamlaunchedoursecondgrantprogramwiththreecolleges,workedtohighlighttheimpactofthetextbookaffordabilityproblemwithUSUstudents,andplannedforbroaderadoptionof

OERTransition:Since2014,theLibraryCoordinatorofStatewideCampusesandothersworkedhardtocreateaviableOERmovementoncampus.Duringthisperiod,wehavebeenabletohireanOERCoordinator,twostudentemployees,andcreateafacultygrantprogram.InconversationswithLES,DigitalInitiatives,andadministration,itseemedtomakemoresensetoplacetheOERprogramwithinourDigitalInitiativesUnitwhereourscholarlycommunicationsinitiativesaremanaged.WeofficiallytransitionedtheprogramtotheDigitalInitiativesunitinSeptember2019.TheLibraryCoordinatorofStatewideCampuseswillcontinuetochairthecampussteeringcommitteeandtoadviseasneeded.
OERGrants:ThenextroundofgrantfundingtosupportUSUfacultyinadopting,adapting,andcreatingOERintheircoursesisunderwaywith14facultyparticipatingrepresentingthreecolleges:theCollegeofEngineering,CollegeofNaturalResources,andtheCollegeofSciencewith14faculty.

VII. WebServices
A. UsageofWebPresenceInwhatappearstobeacontinuingtrend,usageofthemainwebsiteisdecreasingintermsofnumberofsessions,whichmayreflectabroadershiftamonguserstowardalternatepathsforstartingtheirresearch(suchasGoogleScholar).Despitethisdownwardtrend,usersareengagingmoredeeplywithwebsiteandappeartobeconnectingwithvalue-addedlibraryservicesthroughthingslike“MeetwithaLibrarian.”
Toputthesenumbersincontext:SinceFY2015,numberofusersofthemainwebsitehavedeclinedby51%,withtotalsessionsdownby24%.However,therearesignsofdeeperengagementbyacoreaudiencethatdoesusethewebsite.Since2015,theaveragenumberofsessionsperuserhasrisenby53%,withsessionsonaveragehitting41%morepagesandlasting55%longer.Similarly,whilesearcheshavedeclinedby27%since2015,usageofpagesrelatedtolibrarianandreferenceservicescontinuestoberobustandinsomecasesisgrowingsubstantially.Theseshiftsinuserbehaviorsuggestaneedtoprioritizethewebpresenceforhelpandreference,librarytechnology,andothervalue-addedservices.However,thesetrendsalsosuggestongoingdissatisfaction

withlibrary-ownedsearchtoolsandcontinuedmovementawayfromthelibraryasastartingplaceforresearch.

D. Administration
TheExecutiveCouncilservesastheprimaryadministrativebodyforthelibrarywebsite,howevercontentanddesignareprimarilydevelopedbyAlexSundt(WebServicesLibrarian)incollaborationwithprogrammersintheSystemsunit.Projectsaremanagedinclosecoordinationwithrelevantstakeholdersbasedonunitworkorcontentarea.
StrategicWebCommitteeThisyear,thenewStrategicWebCommitteehasalsobeenservingasanadministrativebody,reportingtoExec,thatmanagesprojectsandgoalsthatarebeyondthescopeofanyspecificunitorfunctionalresponsibility.Withthemigrationtoacontentmanagementsystem,thiscommitteeiscurrentevaluatingoptionsandneedsformoredirectediting/managementofthewebsiteforselectunits/staffmembersthatneedtofrequentlyupdatewebsitecontent.Newpoliciesandgovernancestructureswillneedtobedevelopedtoensurecontentquality,workthatwillbeamajorgoalforthiscommitteeforthenextyear.
E. Assessment&Analysis
Asnewdevelopmentwasputonhold,newassessmentandanalysisprojectsplannedforFY2018-19werealsoputonhold.Onemajorresearchprojectwasconductedtoexamineusers’preferencesforthedesignandlabelingofgovernmentinformationcollectionwebsites.FindingsweresharedasanACRLconferencepaperandwillbeusedtoinformthedesignofpagesfortheGovernmentInformationunit.
AspartofthenewLibGuidesprogram,theprojectteamisengagedinseveralongoingassessmentstoevaluatethesuccessofthenewprocessesandpolicies,andwilladjustasneededtoensurethebestoutcomes.
VIII. Outreach
Outreachincludescollaborationswithnon-libraryentities,tours,andlibraryparticipationincampusevents,suchasstudentwelcomefairsandfamilyweekend.Outreacheffortsincreasetheawarenessofthelibraryandlibraryeventstoundergraduatesacrosscampus.

Toursarerequestedbydifferentcampusandcommunityorganizations.Tourshelpstudentsacclimatetothelibraryandgivecommunitymembersanideaofwhatservicesareavailable.Whilewetrytoresistgivingtourspurelyforshowandtell,wedosupportgivingtourstocommunitygroupsandcampusgroupswhocanbenefitfromknowingmoreaboutlibraryservicesandthelibrarybuilding.Infallof2018,weattemptedtoofferWelcomeWeekdrop-intoursofthelibrary,butthesetourswerenotwell-attended.
Wearecurrentlyworkingondevelopingself-tourstoreduceusinglibrarystafftimeforthispurpose.Self-guidedtoursmaterialswillberolledoutinFall2019.

ConnectionsConnectionslibrarysessionsintroduceincomingfreshmentothelibrary.Whilethesesessionsareaconsiderableeffortonourpart,thepayoffissignificantinthat2500freshmengettoknowthelibrary,librarians,andourservices.Infall2018,therewere76Connectionslibrarysectionstaughtby19librarystaff,representingapproximately120hoursofwork.InSpringof2019,LESlearnedthatthelibraryworkshopwillnolongerbemandatoryforConnectionsclasses.WeareconcernedaboutnotreachingtheseFreshmen,especiallysincethelibrarynolongeroffersinstructionintheFreshman-levelEnglish1010classes.InordertoseewhatimpactthishasonincomingFreshmen,weareconductinganassessmentprojecttogatherdataandseehowtheyareinteractingwiththelibraryandwhetherthesestudentsareawareoflibraryresourcesandservices.

PeerLearningeffortsincludetrainingstudentstohelptheirfellowstudentsnavigatethelibrary,aswellasthesupervisionofLES’sLibraryPeerMentors.PeerLearningbuildsastudentcommunityoflibraryambassadors.

LibraryPeerMentorsLibraryPeerMentors(LPMs)continuetobeavitalpartoftheLESDepartment,helpinguswithprojects,workingwithclasses,andstaffingtheInformationDesk.LPMswork15-20hoursaweek.InFY2019,LPMsassistedlibrarianswith70libraryinstructionsessionsandtaught4sectionsofEnglish2010.TheCoordinatorforOutreach&PeerLearningmeetsweeklywiththeLPMstoconducttrainings,shareupdates,androleplayreferenceinterviewscenarios.
Byworkingonprojects,LPMssaveLearning&Engagementlibrariansvaluableworkhours.Sometimestheseprojectsaresmall,likecopyinghandouts,postingflyers,orcleaningclassrooms,andsometimesprojectsarelarge-scaleendeavors.LPMsassistedwithseveralon-goingprojectsoverthepastyear,including:
