Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities The Locksmith Apprentice reports to a Foreman. This classification has no supervisory responsibilities. Typical Functions 1. Cuts, duplicates, programs, and issues keys or proximity cards as requested by campus departments and in coordination with a supervisor and University police. 2. Under the direction of senior locksmiths, maintains records and access controls for the Lock shop; ensures that records are accurate and current. 3. Installs, maintains, and repairs locks, locking mechanisms, and other security devices. 4. Interprets keying guidelines; uses appropriate discretion and knowledge of lock systems to preserve the integrity of the University’s master key system while also meeting customer requests. 5. Assists in the combinating of cylinder pinning. 6. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies. 1

Summary

Incumbents in the Locksmith series ensure the security of campus buildings and equipment by performing locksmith services for University departments, including installing, maintaining, and repairing access controls, locks, key systems, and door hardware.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Locksmith Apprentice reports to a Foreman. This classification has no supervisory responsibilities.

Typical Functions

1. Cuts, duplicates, programs, and issues keys or proximity cards as requested by campus departments and in coordination with a supervisor and University police.

2. Under the direction of senior locksmiths, maintains records and access controls for the Lock shop; ensures that records are accurate and current.

Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.8. Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.9. Assist carpenters with basic carpentry duties.10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Basic knowledge of keys, keyways, key manufacturers, key duplication machines, and key duplication techniques.

2. Basic knowledge of function, grades, and the methods of installation and locking hardware.3. Basic computer skills.4. Basic records maintenance skills.5. Ability to work with tolerances of 1/1000th of an inch.

Minimum Qualifications

Locksmith aptitude is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires moderate physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including lifting average-weight objects (up to 25 lbs.). Employees must adhere to safety precautions.
