Greetings, True Believers! Yeah, I know. I stole thatfrom Stan Lee. But no other place can I think of than this doesthat phrase really mean something.

You are about to read issue 0.5 of Utah GeekMagazine. We have been calling it UGeek for short. I have been

asked, Why did you decide to call it Utah Geek? Isnt thatderogatory? You know, we have been called Nerds, Dweebs,Weirdo, Outcasts, and yes, Geeks. So instead of ghting it whynot embrace it? So, let me take a moment and tell you where theinspiration came for this magazine. I have lived in Utah since1996 and shortly thereafter dived head rst into the geekcommunity. I found a ier for CONduit as a local mediastore and went. Though I have been playing tabletop role-

playing games since I was about 10 year old this was my rstconvention I had ever attended. I had a great time at CONduit. I met many people

whom to this day I can call friends. Since then there have beenmany new conventions and even an expo that lets us geeks havemore fun that ever. So, one day a few years ago I was at the library and Iwas looking though all those free magazines on the newsstand. You know the ones for skaters and rockers, one for families, another for seniors. I wanted to know where I t in with allthese. None of them really represented my interest, thoughmany of them are very informative on other topics. Here we are today. Youre reading a letter from someguy who you may, or may not have, ever met, reading his rantsabout this great idea to start a geek magazine for other geeks inUtah. Utah Geek Magazine is a FREE periodical that will beavailable every-other-month starting January 2012. Its focus ison all things geek. There are so many aspects to this subculture, including: video games, science, board games, books, movies,TV, comic books, technology, history, and conventions to name

just a few. Each issue of UGeek Magazine will be chock-fullof interviews, articles, and short stories. The magazine willalso focuses on current trends and popular hobbies, includingreviews on movies, books, new technologies, games, comic

books and much, much more! Our goal is not to only entertain, but to educate too.

I hope you enjoy this rst issue. We called it Issue0.5 mainly so that we could get it out to everyone a few months before January so that you will all know its here when the NewYear starts.

No other magazine in Utah has been able to adequatelyll the niche market that is Geek, until now!

To a sane man, a rational man, it would appear suicidal to assault such a fortress; better to combat the relentless frost- bite here than throw your life away against the Roost. But Pyre knew better. His boot print left a hint of pink in the ankle-deep snow. You're bleeding Captain, said a legionnaire. Shrugging, Pyre leaned in to his lieutenants, whispering, This ends tonight. Ive bled all I can, I wont bleed no more.

Not til we take the Roost. Pyre stalked to where the thick pines ended and gazed across the mountain valley at the castle beyond. The setting sungleamed a dull crimson upon the jagged parapets and towers, casting an unholy glow on the dread fortress. A smoke lingered,

oating overhead like an unwelcome cloud, overpowering the fresh scent of the pines with a terrible reek. Banners emblazonedwith the crooked demons cross, sign of the dreaded Khanzi sorcerers, apped in the icy breeze, taunting the forward scouts ofthe Ninth Legion. Whatd I tell you Redd? said Pyre. Where a deer can go, a man can go, and where a man can goan army can go.He stood every inch the primordial brawler, a thick shouldered man with enough battle scars for the entire legion. His mane of

blond hair apped in the wind over the crest of his wooly mammoth cloak. A broad sword and a half dozen knife hilts juttedfrom his wide leather belt while the hickory haft of a wide bladed ax was never far from his hand. Thats why I dont bet against you, countered Redd, a wiry little man who was also Pyres unof cial right hand. Were ahead of the Witch- nder General by perhaps three days. Sergeant Briar is going to owe me fty senines. But nowwhat? Wait for his reinforcements and freeze? We lost three more coming over that last pass, we number only seventy fournow. Pyre grimaced, rubbing his scruffy jaw. The Khanzi held castle, known as the Roost, sat impregnable upon a jutting wedge of granite. Sheer cliffs hundreds offeet high surrounded three sides while the gate itself, a pockmarked ridge of death, was accessible only by following a serpen-tine path that allowed no room for a battering ram or siege tower. Overhead, defending archers could pincushion any attackerswith ease, and that didnt account for whatever foulness the Khanzi sorcerers inside might conjure. We take it tonight. I'll not wait for that zealot Witch- nder. Impossibles, said Hardy shaking icicles from his mustache. Wanna bet? countered Redd. Im game, said Two-Toes Turley. Five to one, Pyres nally bitten off more than he can chew. Then Ill commandthese sorry sons of Make it ten to one, said Redd. I've kids to feed. So do I. Two-Toes chuckled, Ten to one it is. Hardy? Nots mes. Pyres must knows somethings. The last, a signals-lieutenant called Topper, rubbed his hands together vigorously and brought them to his mouth shiv-ering, How? What should we expect, boss? They wont waste arrows or ballista with these high mountain winds until they sight us before the gates. Til then, westay back and out of sight. Hardy muttered, Yous saids yous knews a ways to gets us in. Who let him drink? The Leech said he could have it for the frostbite, answered Redd. Hell be fearless and you cant mess up a butch-ers job.Hardy grinned showing crooked teeth as he batted the haft of his ax in his broad hands. He was a butcher if anyone ever was.

Pyre nodded in return saying, Theyll sing songs of our deeds round the table for generations. Nones ever takens the Roosts. And they said none could escape its dungeons too. I'm destined to exact righteous vengeance. Dont feed me your holier than thou dreams Pyre, snarled Two-Toes, gesturing to himself thumb extended. Gimmesomething real. Im leading the charge. It's my life on the chopping block. Get in line, Pyre replied coolly. If the All-Father says your time is done...its done. Redd chuckled, Besides, Khanzi's prefer slaying Jutes like Pyre to Tolburnians like you. Two-Toes couldn't argue the point. Khanzi's had nearly exterminated Jutes from off the face of the world all in thename of their Blood Magic Technology; or as they called it in their own tongue, the Tabulon Working. Before youre within bow-shot, Ill have slain the night-watch and youll have an open passage. We attack after

dusk. Ill signal with a blast from the trump, drop the gate, and youll bring the men to nish it. Two-Toes, Hardy and Toppergrunted their acknowledgment. Redd didnt need to. Tell the men to put their armor on. And what about Khanzi witchcrafts? asked Topper, stamping his feet against the cold. Cold steel will slay them the same as any man.Topper and the others saluted and faded back into the wooded slopes except for Redd, who asked, How long has it beennow? Six years, ten weeks and two days. Hard to believe its over. Is it? Pyre rubbed a calloused hand across his scruffy jaw, Im cursed, that this had to be the last Khanzi stronghold. I nevershouldve taken this long to get back. I pray she forgives me. Redd slapped Pyre on the back. She will. Wars take time. Watching the red sun set against the dark mountains, neither man said anything for a long time until Topper came back.

Tell me captain, how are you getting inside?Same way I got out. Pyre pointed at the slanting mountain ridge above the enemy castle. A hidden tunnel quarried for watercomes from a glacial lake beyond that peak and enters just under the gatehouse feeding their cistern. Couldnt they have barred it? Especially since you're the only man to have ever escaped? Pyre grinned, They never knew how I did it. I watched for three days, waiting to get back in and rescue Arianna. TheKhanzi thought I must have fallen climbing the cliffs. Topper furrowed his brow, Why wait three days to rescue your love? Whyd you leave? Pyres grin vanished like a snuffed lamp. Whatd I say? Redd shrugged. Almost froze to death on this mountain. She made me swear if I couldnt rescue her in three days that Id leave, thatId go save her family and overthrow

the Khanzi. The only oath I ever considered breaking. I never knew. If Arianna is still alive... Pyre trailed off. If? Redd frowned, whispering, Who survives aKhanzi death camp? Lets go Redd. Watch for the signal Topper. Sorry captain. Wait. Just the two of you? Ithought you'd take a dozen men. We two can do this. I dont want Two-Toesthinking he's short-handed.

Yes, Captain, mumbled Topper with a wor -ried look. Scaling up past crags and loose boulders,Pyre watched careful that theydidnt create a landslide and giveaway their position. Redd strung his stout horn bow. He couldkill a man at six hundred paces; and he wanted to be

prepared if there was a Khanzi lookout stationed atthe lake though Pyre swore there wouldnt be. I crouched in the howling wind for threedays watching that demonic castle. None else would

have endured that who didnt have to. Pyre cracked his knuckles. I've a thunder in the blood. Cold vengeance is coming. They reached the summit as the stars emerged from hiding. A pale jeweled moon cast a ghostly re ection upon thestill lake. Pyre knelt facing north upon a bare slab of rock. Hands upon his sword, he let his heart be felt by the cold gods ofthe north. His prayers to the All-Father had no words, because if the gods knew his heart, all was known to them and wordsonly got in the way. Lakes bigger than I thought it would be. Im glad its not frozen, said Redd, shivering. It will feel like it is, said Pyre, as he put a fresh dressing upon his cracked and bloody foot. The lake sat in a lengthy oblong depression, jumbled small boulders made up the shore, and snow clung to the shad-ows between the stones. Redd glanced over the landscape. I dont see a marker or entrance.

Pyre grinned like the wolf he was, Its underwater. The lake is higher than it used to be. I anticipated this. You dontthink they would have left it to be easily found by besiegers do you? I didnt think Id have to get very wet, answered Redd, taking off his coat, boots, and mail. Pyre chuckled, steam wafting from his mouth as he removed his cloak and chain mail. Are there any sh? Redd asked, dipping a toe into the lake. Yeah, pike, trout, and cray sh as big as lobsters. Pyre gestured with arms wide. Theyre what I lived on for threedays. Stripping down to his woolen trousers and boots, he slung his ax over his shoulder and waded into the freezing waters.

I know where it is, but wait. Ill signal when Ive found it. Then with a full body shiver, Pyre went into the colddark water. The initial shock almost made him turn back, but Arianna's face burned in his mind. He would set her free this nightor die trying. A commotion of bubbles frothed to the right of Pyre. He couldnt see them so much as feel their chilling tickle. Then

the bubbles moved to the left as the lake water heaved because of some aquatic commotion. The water may as well have been tar for all Pyre could see, but he remembered the stones and where they lay. Hishands caressed a slimy bottom of choking weeds and muck, then nally a rm escarpment of stone. Swimming to the left hefollowed a gentle suction into a wide chamber that opened to a hidden cavity in the skin of the mountain. He burst up into a pitch black air pocket receiving a much needed breath. Feeling about the passage, Pyre found thetorch he had left six years earlier still sitting on the ledge. He shook his steel and int and after a dozen tries got the torch toalight. Save for some oating debris, the chamber was much the same as it was six years earlier. Water ran downhill in asluiced hand carved tunnel just wide enough for a man. Going down would be much easier than coming up. He set the torchon the rock ledge and went back to guide Redd. Plunging back into blind cold darkness he went through the opening brushing past the slime. So cold, he neededanother breath already. Then something caught at his boot. The boot that reeked of blood. He recalled no snags or sunken logs

that could catch. It pulled him backward. He kicked at the obstacle and distinctly felt it lose grip and let go. Pyre feared no living man, but this? This could be no man. Chopping through the water, he both cursed and praised that he wore his thick dragon skin boots. He came up gasp -ing, then slammed the ax back down into the murk behind him. Rushing back to the rock strewn edge, he stared xedly backat the gloomy water. Redd grabbed his bow and knocked an arrow. What was it? Something inde nable disturbed the surface, shapeless in the obscure billowing lake. All was still another eternal second. Pyre shook his head. They got bigger. Redd looked puzzled a moment until they each heard the horri c chittering at the waters edge.

If the water was black, the six eyes staring hungrily at the two men were blacker still, dark as the stars of the devil.Rust colored chitin covered these starving behemoths, who were each as large as fatted hogs. Claws like torturous clampssnapped at the men as the monsters scuttled forward. Redd loosed his arrow into the chittering mouth of the nearest menace. Shrieking in its own blasphemous tongue, themonster cray sh dropped back into the lake. The one beside it, paused, as if considering going after the men or its fallen comrade. The third gave no hesitation and charged at Pyre with ailing pincers. Batting the left claw away with his ax, Pyre dodged low to avoid the larger right. Chittering, the giant crustacean plowed into Pyre, gripping his leg on its second attempt then yanking him back intothe deep. Pyre hammered at the creatures shell in vain; the scab-colored armor de ecting the ax blow time and again.

The cray sh charged as Redd loosed another arrow. The shaft caught the monster in the eye and it balked mid-attack. Redd missed a second shot in the commotion as Pyrewas swung into the ight path and Redd narrowly checked hisaim. A third arrow took the wounded beast between the eyesand it slumped forward with a curious wheeze. Losing his ax, Pyre drew his sword and caught the tipin the exible chink of the cray shs armor. With a heave, Pyreslid the blade to the hilt.

The monster constricted upon itself letting Pyre free. This was vile sorcery, muttered Redd. Pyre shook his head, Naw, they just grow big uphere. Dont deny their power. Even losing the war, theyre aforce to be reckoned with. We dont even know which Sor-cerer Lord is here. Could be the Mad Emperor for all we know.Maybe we should wait for the Witch- nder. Pyre shook his head, cold water dripping, Ill not restanother night til I have rescued Arianna. Stay here if you like. Redd smirked. Who elsed watch your cursed back? Pyre tossed Redd the end of a rope saying, Then lets

go before we freeze to death. A good re in the Roost willwarm my spirits. And he dove back into the icy depths. Always the gambler, Redd followed. A gust of wind carried a skiff of snow across the darklake and all was deathly still again.

Star Trek Lives!! by Rex Rouviere You might have seen this on a bumper sticker, but to some its more. Its a way of life. No, were not talking aboutpeople who wear pointed ears and Star Trek uniforms to jury duty. We look today at a group that for a quarter of a centuryhas pushed the Star Trek ideal to make the world a better place. Through charity work, personal edi cation and helpingothers, Star Trek fans have harnessed their dreams to bring a small amount of that utopian future to todays world. One of Utahs largest fan groups is called The Seventh Fleet. This family-friendly organization consists of regionalgroups called Starships and organize their crews like those from the television series. Each Ship or club has a Captain(Club President), Executive O cer (Vice President) and any number of Department Heads and crew assigned to them. Now this may seem a bit odd, but it helps create the atmosphere of actually being on a ship and builds the camaraderieamong the group. The Seventh Fleet takes their Trek very serious and has even created a Crewman to Captain rank ad-vancement system that allows any fan to grow in the fandom and eventually run their own Ship or Runabout (Chapter intraining). What started with three people 25 years ago has grown into a major fan group with hundreds of people spread throughsix Ships, three Runabouts and one Shuttle (a smaller group closely attached to their mother-ship) in three di erentstates and two di erent countries. Each ship comes together at least once a month for activities to celebrate friendship, fun, and the fandom of Star Trek.

These monthly activities could be anything from the mundane bowling (albeit cosmic) or service projects (clean-ing highways) to more involved charity work (http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com or www.equalitynow.org) or teamwalkathon (http://www.walknowforautismspeaks.org/utah) or even go on a mission on (get this) actual starship simulators(http://www.spacecamputah.org/) All of these Away Missions are meant to help their fellow man, improve their commu-nity, and most of all have fun! A major part of their orders each member receives when they join is to: a.) Keep the Star Trek dream alivethrough In nite Diversity in In nite Combinations, b.) Bring together families and make new friends by having fun withthose who share our same interests, and c.) Make our future a better place by improving ourselves and serving our friends, neighbors and community. So if you like your Trek more active than sitting in a theater and want to have good sci- related fun in a family-friendly atmosphere, consider checking out one of the groups listed at www.seventh eet.org.

On May 27, 2011 some of the greatest minds on the zombie outbreak gathered in Salt LakeCity, Utah at Conduit, the local science c on conven on, to discuss how to survive in a world full ofthe undead. Included in this panel were: Larry Correia (New York Best Selling Author), Nathan Shumate(zombie movie expert), Zachary Hill (gun and ammo expert), Mike Kupari (explosive expert), Jaleta Glegg(monster expert author), and Tom Carr (paranormal expert and zombie hunter). The world would neverbe the same as these minds combined their ideas and, in some cases, a desire to hunt, kill and destroythe UNDEAD.

So why is there so much interest in zombies? Many people have only read about zombies. Thesepanelists dream of the day the outbreak happens. You may be asking yourself, What do I do if the brain

eaters crawl from the depths of graves and start looking for their next meal? Many feel the best way isto arm up, lock up and wait. But this panel agrees that cinder blocks, guns and lots of hard wheat AREthe answer. Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse Zombies can be broken down into three types: Necromancer, man made, and extraterrestrial.Necromancer zombies are the ones given new life by magic. Most believe these are not really thoseof the recently dead, but have been taken over by one person who is controlling their ac ons via magic. They are the hardest to remove. You may be saying, Hey! Anyone can hit a slow walking, ro en eshmonster in the head. But really, the only way to stop a necromancer zombie is to stop the necromancer, the one controlling the zombies. This will mean cu ng, shoo ng, and in some cases burning your way

through hundreds of esh ea ng and brain hungry beasts. Not always the easy way but the plus is they are slow. However, likeall zombies, one bite and you are crying for brains, and most likely armed to the teeth. That can cause many issues for your teamwho now have to cut down a hundred zombies and one zombie armed to the teeth.

Man made zombies remind us of the T Virus, or Z Virus, or any other code names for a chemical that turns your skininside out and leaves you with a craving for brains and esh. The biggest issue with the man made zombies are the fact that theydo not move like the slow undead. Nope! They are fast and you can join their ranks with just one drop of blood in the wrongplace. They are very nasty and in most cases lead by Lindsay Lohan (If that does not make your bu cheeks crunch up a bit I dontknow what will). The good news is they die with a shot to the head, or removal of the brain from the spine. These are the oneswe love to just pop from the top of a mall roof, or cut down with your good old fashion chain saw. Once again you have to worryabout blood contamina on. So best get yourself some goggles, a rain coat and maybe just a long range ri e. Play it safe by takinghead shots at a distance.

The extraterrestrial are the most common zombies da ng back to the 1950s and 60s; slow walking and, well, just dumb. They are easy to kill and the only way to become one is a single bite. These are the ones we can always hope will start the endof the world. Any person with half a brain can take these on. (Sorry to anyone from Washington D.C. We understand the lack ofeven half a brain.) Whats the best way to make it in a world with this type of zombie? Take over a Wal-Mart, lock the doors andplay XBox for a few years. I would suggest not playing any games with zombies in them. The biggest worry with a world full ofthese zombies is the living trying to get into the Wal-Mart with you.

In every case, the best thing to do is be ready. First, get yourself a gun and know how to use it. (Once again, those in D.C,Chicago and California, sorry, but you are out of luck unless you belong to a gang or the mob. Anyone might also want to avoidthese areas for, say, the next y years.) Now that you have your guns, the next worry is food. You may feel you can just buy abunch of Spaghe O's and Top Ramen. Ive got news for you. Its not easy to live on them for more than a month. Ask anyone incollege. You need some good food supplies. Next, you need to head for higher grounds. The best places are the second oor of abuilding, or locking yourself in a basement blocking all doorways on your way down. If you live in the city nd the tallest buildingand head for the top oor. Block all the stairways going up and then sit it out. No need to be a hero and if there is anything welearned from the movies, DO NOT GO OUT ALONE! There will come a me where you will have to escape your lock down fort. You can only hope it is months a er thebreakout, not a few days. When you do head out, be ready! Go in small teams of three to four people. Keep your noise down andscout out where you are going. Have escape routes ready in case you have to split up, and have a me and place to meet backat. Most of all, if any of the team does not make it back, DO NOT WAIT FOR THEM! Head back to your base and hope they arenot munching down on a Manwhich the next me you see them. When you have to go out keep people at the base, and whenyour scout team returns check every inch of them. Yes! Get naked and make sure, because you do not want an infected memberof your team locked in with you. That just leads to a game of cat and mouse (oh, youre the mouse by the way) and it makes iteven harder to get out.

These are just some simple ways to save you from the end of the world, and the start of the brain bar on every corner. Now, you can choose to ght, become a zombie, or save that last bullet for yourself!

With the increased popularity of the deck building gamecomes Eaten by Zombies! The rst thing that will jump out atyou is not the zombies, but the box they are in. This is one ofthe best boxes I have ever seen any game come in. The game iscompact, portable, and the indexing cards are great to keep the

game organized. The box looks like a military ammuni ons box. Why? I am sure it has something to do with the way you willhave to dispatch the pending zombie apocalypse.

Unlike most deck building games, you are not tryingto get the most land or points. You have one goal in this 1950sapocalyp c world, dont die. In this game of ght-or- ight youhave to do just that, ght or run away with your tail betweenyour legs.

As one of the few survivors in this world you start withsome s cks ( ght), some sandwiches, and the guts needed to

nd a good hiding place ( ee). On your turn you venture out ofyour Safe House, which is not something safe to do. While outand about you will surely encounter a zombie or two, or three,or four, or more.Every turn you will face same zombies and then you will collectsome swag. Thats the stu you need to keep yourself safe, ifthat is even possible. In a 2 player game the one who survivesis the winner. In a 3-4 player game your friends dont just loosewhen they die, they turn into the undead too. Just rememberwhen playing Eaten by Zombies!, it s not that you dont haveto run faster than the zombies, just faster than your friends.Because in this game, when your friends die they come a er youtoo.
