FAQS

Do I need a bachelor’s degree to do a master’s degree?The traditional path to postgraduate study is via a completed bachelor's degree, but if you have professional experience (around 8 years) you may be eligible to enter a graduate certificate. Graduate certificates give you a taste of postgraduate study, and you finish with a respected qualification after only 4 subjects.

Graduate certificates also make up the first 4 subjects of a master’s degree, so if you successfully finish this, you may be able to go straight on to complete the master’s degree.

How much will it cost?Postgraduate study is a big investment in your future, not just financially, but in time as well. Course fees for a subject are determined by its credit points and the course in which you are enrolled. To calculate an approximate course fee, multiple the total credit points for your course by the fee per credit point. You can calculate your course fees using the UTS Course Fee Calculator.

Is there a student loan system for postgraduate students?Yes, you may qualify for FEE HELP, a government loan scheme for Australian students. It allows you to defer some or all of your fees depending on your income. You repay the loan through your tax, so the amount you pay per year depends on how much you earn. Read more

Alternatively, if what you are studying is directly related to your current job and you pay your fees up front, you may also be able to claim your fees and other study related expenses as a tax deduction. See the ATO website for more details.

Can I study part-time?All postgraduate courses are available full-time or part-time. Most domestic students choose to study part time, at night, or sometimes at weekend classes if offered. Class times are designed for busy professionals, sometimes with day or evening options for classes. The majority of classes take place in the Faculty of Engineering and IT building, just a few minutes’ walk from Central Station.

In addition to contact class time, you will probably spend double that in individual or group study and project work. Our buildings are open 24/7, with award-winning spaces that make this much easier to manage. Map your study timetable using the link below. It is recommended that full time students take 24 credit points per session and part-time students take less than 18 credit points per session.

Do I receive credit recognition for my previous studies?All applicants are assessed individually based on relevant tertiary qualifications and/or evidence of learning outcomes demonstrated through appropriate work experience. If you have a recent bachelor’s degree in an IT or a related field, you may be eligible for up to 24 credit points that cover the basics you already know.

Can I transfer from a graduate certificate to a master degree?Yes, the majority of our courses are articulated, meaning you can begin with a 24 credit point (4-subject) graduate certificate and apply to have your subjects credited towards an appropriate master’s degree. If you successfully complete the first 24 credit points of the master’s and choose not to continue on with your studies, you may still graduate with a graduate certificate†.† International students may have visa restrictions that prevent course articulation

Are the IT courses professionally recognised?Graduates of our IT courses are eligible for professional-level or associate level membership of the Australian Computer Society. See online course information for details.

MASTER OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGYThe UTS Master of Information Technology (MIT) program gives you a comprehensive understanding of IT in specialised technical or management areas. The wide range of specialisations allows you to tailor the course to satisfy your career development needs.

The MIT allows you to deepen your knowledge in the IT field with a specific major or increase your general knowledge with an unspecified major.

This course will provide you with an enhanced understanding of the business context and technical developments shaping ICT and will equip you to meet the challenges of working in the IT industry. You will also have the opportunity to work on a project with either a research or industry focus.

If you don’t have a background in IT, you can start in the Graduate Certificate in Information Technology Studies (See page 16) and progress to the master’s program on completion (provided you meet the academic requirements).

“I decided to study at UTS because of its focus on technology, as well as its facilities,” says Jing Ying Cheah, a student in the Master of Information Technology course.

the labs right there. The university also partners with CISCO, so they have an abundance of resources.

“There’s also a subject called Technology and Innovation Management. What I really enjoyed was the approach – it’s really about innovative processes and tools you can use.”

For Jing Ying, the course content has lived up to her expectations, but some of the most valuable things she’s learnt have happened outside the classroom.

For example, she participated in the Accomplish Award, which helps students increase their employability by attending mock interviews, strengthening their CVs, and building their personal brands and networks.

She also joined the Lucy Mentoring Program, which exposes women to employment and leadership opportunities, where she was paired

with an IT professional at PwC. The experience was the starting point for a wealth of professional relationships.

“The mentor had his own team in IT architecture, so it was really great getting to know what the different team members do, and getting an overview of how all the different units fit together,” she says.

“What I really enjoyed was the opportunity to develop my networking skills and really grow my network.

“I’ve been able to reach out to people from other business areas for a coffee catch-up to get to know their business units and get more of a feel for where I want to be when I graduate, and the roles and positions I prefer.”

He was inspired by UTS being a young university, and by its focus on innovation and entrepreneurship.

“It seemed to offer a huge opportunity to grow,” he says.

Now studying a Master of Information Technology with a major in Business Information Systems, Luis says he was also attracted by the fact that the course covered more than just the technical aspects of IT.

“My first semester subjects gave me the foundation to understand how technology works. In this second semester, I’m learning about how the business works, and how to interact with people to build human-centred solutions,” he says.

But the university experience isn’t solely about what happens in the classroom

– since starting at UTS, Luis has also seen firsthand what Sydney has to offer.

“I find people here very open. The attitude is just ‘Let’s work together’. I also like the diversity of Sydney – so many cultural activities. I’m always busy with studies, working, enjoying meeting new people, learning new things outside UTS,” he says.

“Sydney has changed my life, and UTS has changed my life, in a very positive way.”

MASTER OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (EXTENSION)The Master of Information Technology (Extension) is very similar to the Master of Information Technology in that you will complete core subjects, a major and a project with electives. The difference is that you will also have the opportunity to complete a sub-major consisting of 4 subjects (24 credit points).The sub-major is your chance to deepen your knowledge in a secondary area of interest in the field of IT.

MASTER OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (ADVANCED)If you are an IT professional, this course provides an opportunity to explore in depth a specialised area of computing/IT by undertaking a substantial research study. As part of this course you will complete three core subjects, five subjects as part of your major and a research project (over a period of 1 year) or a combination of electives and a research project. This course may also improve your chances of being considered for higher degree by research programs such as the PhD.

GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGYThis course provides a postgraduate-level introduction to those with a background in IT allowing students to undertake a specialised sequence of subjects to upskill or study subjects in an area not covered in their previous studies.

A tertiary qualification is not required for this graduate certificate; however, you must have more than two years’ work experience in an IT-related field.

You will complete four subjects, comprising a core subject and three subjects from an IT area of your choice (see Majors on page 9). Upon completion of the Graduate Certificate, you can apply for entry into the Master of Information Technology or the Master of Information Technology (Extension) where you will receive credit recognition for the subjects completed in this course (provided you meet the academic requirements and you internally transfer into the master’s).

ACADEMIC PROFILE

Paul Kennedy Associate Professor

Paul Kennedy is the Deputy Head of School (Teaching and Learning), Software. He has received an Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning as well as a UTS Learning and Teaching Award for Strengthening the UTS Model of Learning for “a decade long contribution to data analytics teaching, learning and academic leadership.” His research focuses on the data analytics of biomedical data, primarily childhood cancer.

For David Fogarty, having high quality technical skills wasn’t enough to get him where he wanted to go in his career.

Instead, he felt there was a gap between what he was doing and where he wanted to go in his career in the software industry.

“I was very much a technical person, and I was good at what I was doing, but it wasn’t enough,” says David.

The MBT exposed him to a wealth of new knowledge that he could apply to his day-to-day working life, from better understanding the constraints of challenges of multi-vendor organisations or the role of technology in the broader business landscape to comparing the commercial imperatives of different projects.

The Internetworking program is intended for computing science, IT or engineering graduates, with or without networking experience, who wish to learn or extend their knowledge of networking and networking technologies.

The program will give you a hands-on learning experience using various resources, including the support provided by Cisco Systems for broad computer network and relevant applications. This includes routing, switching, security, wireless and VoIP, mobile computing, web systems, and cloud computing and operating systems.

This program covers all aspects of the organisational use of networks: design, implementation, security, management, end systems and applications. Courses within the program offer a degree of subject choice that enables you to choose subjects that suit your interests and career path.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN INTERNETWORKINGThe UTS Master of Science in Internetworking program has been designed to meet industry’s needs for computer network professionals and software and applications programmers (focusing on Internet services maintenances/support). It will give you a thorough and practical grounding in networking, network design, network administration and network management.

The program is ideal for students who wish to prepare for a number of industry-based certifications and complete these subjects over an 18-month period, rather than 12 months, to meet the prerequisite requirements more effectively. These include the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Routing and Switching, Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), CCNA Voice and CCNA Security.

It is also ideal for IT professionals who would like to be retrained and move into computer networking and its relevant fields, or as research-oriented students looking to complete a larger thesis (based on primary rather than secondary data, thus improving prospects for future research careers).

STUDENT PROFILE Yee Ching LeungMaster of Science in Internetworking

As a senior software developer at Tabcorp Holdings, Yee Ching Leung is familiar with the skills required to succeed in the IT sector.

Now a postgraduate student at UTS, Yee Ching believes that the course content of the Master of Science in Internetworking will provide her with expertise that is directly relevant to her future career aspirations.

“The networking and technology knowledge that I have acquired from the course, such as routing, security, mobile and internet computing are invaluable. As a result, I am better equipped to design and develop more reliable, robust and efficient software applications,” she says.

Working full-time and studying part-time has been a challenging proposition, but one that Yee Ching has managed effectively by prioritising time and tasks in order to achieve her study goals.

The experience of being surrounded by other postgrad students in similar positions has also proven useful, expanding Yee Ching’s networks in a way she never expected.

“Many of the students in this course are studying part-time and have a full-time professional job. This has provided a lot of opportunities for me to meet professionals in other business areas, creating social networking opportunities and exploring different industry practices,” she says.

Jacob TaylorMaster of Science in Internetworking

It took a couple of attempts, but Jacob Taylor is now ensconced in the UTS Master of Science in Internetworking – and he’s pretty happy about it.

“I’ve really been enjoying it so far. It’s very hands-on, and I don’t feel like I’m spending a lot of unnecessary time learning unnecessary theory,” he says.

“The teachers give you the baseline understanding of how something works, as opposed to just making it work for you. I feel that I’m getting both an understanding of the general concepts of networking while also becoming skilled.”

The course content is already shaping his career – Jacob was recently offered a promotion at his current employer after he undertook a Juniper workshop at UTS.

“Because I did the special training that was offered by UTS, and because I had the general understanding and the foundations of networking, I was able to advance quickly,” he says.

“I like the options that this course is giving me. Do I want to take an academic path, or an industry-centric path, or maybe a bit of both? I feel like this program enables that – I have that choice.”

Wenjing Jia Senior Lecturer

Wenjing Jia’s research delves into image and video analysis, algorithms and applications for computer vision, and visual pattern recognition. She is particularly interested in extracting text information from images (such as vehicle license plate detection and recognition, character/text detection from natural scene images or web pages and emails), and developing deep features and deep learning architectures for various computer vision applications.

RESEARCH IN FOCUSCentre for Quantum Software and InformationThe mission of the UTS Centre for Quantum Software and Information (UTS:QSI) is to research and develop software for quantum computers and to discover new information processing applications of quantum technologies.

The UTS:QSI’s expertise in the software and information processing capabilities of quantum computing and communication technologies places it in a unique position in the Australian quantum technology research community, with a software and theory research program that complements the hardware focus of other Australian teams.

The UTS:QSI has five research programs, i.e., algorithms and complexity, AI applications, programming and verification, intermediate quantum computing and architectures, and information theory and security. This research agenda covers the breadth of topics in quantum software development and information science.

From 2017 the UTS:QSI will be playing a major role in developing applications for the Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technologies.

ACADEMIC PROFILE

Dr Min XuSenior Lecturer, School of Computing and Communications

Dr Min Xu received Ph.D degree of IT from University of Newcastle, Australia, Master degree of Science (Computing) from National University of Singapore, and Bachelor degree of Engineering from University of Science and Technology of China respectively.

Dr Xu’s expertise is in multimedia data (video, audio and text) analytics and computer vision. She has proposed several innovative methods for 1) multimedia affective/semantic content analysis, 2) multi-modality information analysis and fusion, 3) personalised multimedia services. Recently, she is focusing on applying machine learning algorithms (e.g. deep neural networks) for multimedia applications, including affective computing, image caption and action recognition.

Dr Xu introduced audio keywords to assist video content analysis in 2003. Her proposed method outperformed most traditional visual based methods and attached a lot of followed research on joined audio and video content analysis. She further proposed a multi-modality mid-level representation framework to bridge the gap between low-level audio and video features and high-level video content. In 2006, she developed a video adaptation system based on MPEG-21 Digital Item Adaptation framework. The proposed system, one of the earliest such systems, considered user preference of video content as well as normal bandwidth constraints and provided a personalised video access. Another of her recent achievements is affective content analysis using multiple modality features.

Dr Xu has published over 100 research papers in high quality international journals and conferences. Over 1500 citations of her research papers show her reputation in her research field.

OSHC covers students for emergency medical attention through the public health system. The university can arrange visa-length cover for you, the cost of which is to be paid at the same time as tuition fees.

STUDENT SERVICES AND AMENITIES FEEDomestic and international students are required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee. This fee funds services and amenities at UTS such as social and cultural clubs, services for developing students study skills, UTS food, beverage and retail outlets (including a 10% discount for students), the free legal services centre for students, and the second-hand bookstore. In 2016 the Student Services and Amenities fee was A$145 (full-time students) and $72.50 (part-time). If you’re an Australian citizen or on a humanitarian visa, this fee may be deferred through a government loan scheme called SA-HELP. For more information see fees.uts.edu.au
