Why Universities Care
The purpose of higher education has always been to seek understanding of the emerging concerns of society and the forces that influence society …
And then to produce research and leadership that apply knowledge to shaping the future through technological advances and new ideas.
If sustainability describes the emerging concerns of society, then university business and academic models will adapt to exemplify sustainability principles in the classroom, in the machine room and throughout campus life.
Office of Sustainability
Purpose Our mission is to promote the sustainability-related activities
and ideas of all academic and operations units on campus,
and to pursue new activities and ideas with these units and
in collaboration with students, faculty, staff and other
campus stakeholders.

Natural Resources Management Plan
CPFM will maintain utility system performance at, or
above, an annual average plant efficiency of 88%,
average electrical generation performance of 8,500
BTU/kWh and chilling station performance of 0.70
kW/Ton.
By August 31, 2020, we will reduce energy demand
by an average of 20% per square foot.
By August 31, 2020, 5% (17M kWh) of energy on the
Main Campus will be from renewable sources.
By August 31, 2020, we will reduce domestic water
use by 20%, with at least 40% of total water use
coming from reuse/reclaimed sources.
Natural Resources Management Plan
By August 31, 2020, we will divert 90% of the total
waste stream from landfill.
By August 31, 2020, we will reduce overall gasoline
and diesel fuel consumption for the campus vehicle
fleet by 20%, while shifting 50% of the campus
vehicle fleet to 50% E85 gasoline and other
alternative fuels.
During the 2012-13 fiscal year, and in collaboration
with the AVP of Purchasing, the PSSC will build on
the new green purchasing policy.
The PSSC will guide the integration of sustainability
in the Campus Master Plan Update.

Campus Masterplan Process
Establish direction for
sustainability within
overall effort
Identify existing goals
and gaps
Identify priorities
Integrate with big ideas
and emerging initiatives
Identify metrics
(STARS, others)
Follow through
Process
This process identified seven
key themes which will form the
basis for benchmarking
progress as the plan is
implemented.
