Rabbis Message Dreyfus Memorial LectureRabbi Dreyfus, z"l. . . Rabbi Dr. A. Stanley Dreyfus,z"l,was a singular phenomenon. A na-tive of Youngstown, OH, Rabbi Dreyfus was ordained at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish

Institute of Religion in Cincinnati in 1946, subsequently earned his Ph.D. there, and went on

to serve congregations in Terra Haute, IN, Shreveport, LA and Galveston, TX. He served as

Rabbi of Union Temple from 1965-1979, and continued as Rabbi Emeritus until his death in2008. He was a scholar of seemingly boundless dimensions. His doctorate was in Sephardic

history. His teaching at HUC-JIR was in the Department of Rabbinics. He was a liturgist of

unimpeachable stature, and served as Chair of the Liturgy Committee of the Central Confer-

ence of American Rabbis, overseeing the writing and publication of Gates of Prayer, Gates of

Repentance, Gates of the House, Gates of Mourning, and Gates of Forgiveness, the incredible

series of prayer books for the Reform Movement published during the 1970's. He also served as CCAR Place-

ment Director for over a decade. Aside from all this, he was a loving husband to Marianne, father to Dr. James

and Richard,z"l, father-in-law to Rabbi Ellen and Helen, and grandfather to Ben, Lina, David, Daniel and Adam.

And now there are great-grandchildren too. And of course, we cannot forget his quick wit and good humor, and

his unparalleled ability to manipulate the English language. We loved him, and we miss him.The Rabbi A. Stanley Dreyfus Memorial Lecture. . . Part of Rabbi Dreyfus's legacy to our temple was a con-

tribution to serve as a building block for an annual lecture series. This year will be the third in this annual se-

ries. We are grateful to Rabbi Dreyfus for this gift of love to our congregation, and we encourage all our con-

gregants and friends to perpetuate it through the kindness of contributing to it.

Rabbi Barry L. Schwartz. . . We are delighted to welcome Rabbi Barry L. Schwartz as this year's Rabbi DreyfusMemorial Lecturer. Rabbi Schwartz serves as Director of the Jewish Publication Society, the preeminent pub-

lisher of Jewish books to the English-reading world since 1888. Rabbi Schwartz also serves as Rabbi of Congre-

gation Adas Emuno of Leonia, NJ. He attended Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and graduated from Duke

University,Magna Cum Laude. He was ordained at HUC-JIR in New York in 1985 and holds Master of Arts in

Hebrew Literature and Doctor of Divinity degrees from HUC-JIR. He began his career in Israel, as Rabbi of theLeo Baeck Education Center in Haifa, and went on to serve congregations in Amherst, NY, Chevy Chase, MD,

and Cherry Hill, NJ. Rabbi Schwartz is actively involved in Jewish environmentalism. He was a founding mem-

ber of the Washington, D.C. chapter of Shomrei Adamah, the first national Jewish environmental organization.

He serves on the grassroots advisory committee of COEJL, the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life,

and helps lead the Environment Committee of the Central Conference of American Rabbis. Rabbi Schwartz is a

prolific writer: the author of four books, a prize winning short story, and articles that have appeared in theJour-

nal of Reform Judaism, American Jewish History, and theHebrew Union College Annual. His textbook,Jewish

Heroes, Jewish Values, is currently used in over 300 religious schools nationwide. Another text, Jewish Theol-

ogy: A Comparative Study, explores Jewish denominational thinking.Honi The CirclemakerEco-Fables From

Ancient Israelis a series of folktales for children. Rabbi Schwartz recently authored Judaism's Great Debates,

which was published in both adult and youth editions. He is married to Deborah A. Schwartz, an occupationaltherapist specializing in hand rehabilitation. Their three children are Nadav, Talia, and Noam. Friend, colleague

and classmate to Rabbi Goodman, Rabbi Schwartz proudly counts himself among the legion of rabbis who

were privileged to study with Rabbi Dreyfus. Without a doubt, Rabbi Dreyfus would have qvelled greatly to

have welcomed Rabbi Schwartz to Union Temple for this lectureship.

Please join us!. . . . Saturday, February 22. Dinner at 6:00 PM, followed by Rabbi Schwartz's teaching.

An interesting article entitled, German, Jewish and Neither by Yascha Mounk recently was printed in the

opinion pages of The New York Times (Sunday Review, January 5, 2014). Mr. Mounk is the author of

Stranger in My Own Country: A Jewish Family in Modern Germany and grew up there in the 1980s and

90s, but now resides in New York. According to his figures, Hitler reduced the German Jewish population

from over 500,000 to only about 15,000 at the end of WWII (the current estimate is well over 100,000). Basi-

cally, his story is one of an identity crisishis parents were not fervent Jews yet as he grew up he began to

feel more Jewish but less German. To achieve his goal to be merely viewed as an individual, Yascha left his

beloved home country and now identifies himself as a New Yorker. How does this relate to us here at Union

Temple you ask? Do we identify first as (A) Brooklynites, (B) Americans, or (C) Reform Jews or does this

    matter? Thankfully, we welcome (D)

All of the above, and provide wonder-

ful programming to help resolve any

Jewish identity crises. Yes, we have

beautiful music at our services, an

event of note following almost everyFriday Shabbat, Brotherhood and Sis-

    terhood breakfasts with book discus-

sions and films on socially relevant is-

    sues, fun-filled programs for chil-

dren, a youth group and excellent He-

brew education. We even have the

    Eastern Athletic Health Club offering

    discounts to Temple members. Where

else can you sate your emotional, spiri-

tual, and physical needs under one

roof! So get your friends to give us a

try and perhaps we can consolidate

    their identities. Remember the bipolar

    Native American who one minute

thought he was a wigwam and the next

a teepee he went to a therapist who

    concludedyoure too tents!

February is Jewish Disabilities Awareness Month.

Here is a great blog that explains why February is

    Jewish Disabilities awareness month- http://

    www.matankids.org/2012/02/17/jewish-disabilities

-awareness-month-and-parshat-mishpatim/In our congregation as well as in our Religious

School, we strive to be all inclusive. As it says in

Proverbs 22: 6, educate each child according to

their way. In the Religious School we are using a

Hebrew curriculum that allows each student to

work at their own pace, and learn in their own

way. This is just the beginning. Please check out

the Union for Reform Judaism website for more ways we can be an inclusive congregation- http://urj.org/life/

It isnt easy, being Jewish! Our people have been oy veyingthat for five millennia. But if thats hard, imag-

ine how difficult it must be to be black and Jewish. Find out on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at 10 AM, when our

own Demetria Royals will lead us in a discussion of Rebecca Walkers autobiography, Black, White, and Jew-

ish. The daughter of Pulitzer-prize-winning black author Alice Walker and white Jewish lawyer Mel Leven-

thal, Rebecca was born in Mississippi, the child of that states first legal interracial marriage. Her book is the

riveting depiction of the highs and lows of straddling two worlds and struggling to find her place in both.

Havent read the book? No problem. Youll still find the discussion stimulating, and you are bound to have

much to contribute to it. So dont miss out on this morning of good talk, good friends, and great food!

Sisterhood wishes everyone a happy Valentines Day. May our hearts and our world always be filled with and

    led by love.
