Rabbi’s Message

Religious Zealotry and the Public Sphere

The back of the bus. . . . The Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955 catapultedRosa Parks, z”l, into the spotlight of the Civil Rights Movement. Her refusal to

move to the back of the bus one day resulted in the Montgomery Bus Boycott,

led by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., z”l and Rev. Ralph Abernathy, z”l, andtheir colleagues. Ultimately racial segregation on public transportation was

outlawed in Montgomery, and eventually throughout the South. Through this

one act of self-assertion and civil disobedience, Mrs. Parks made her mark

upon history and upon all of our hearts and minds. Now, we cannot hear of asituation in which people are forced to sit in the back of the bus without a sense

of outrage. It is a natural and understandable “knee-jerk” reaction for any of

us.

The back of the bus. . . ? ! In the past few years there has been a growing con-

flict in Israel between the Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) and general populations. One of the manifestations has

been the phenomenon of so-called “Mehadrin” bus lines. These are public bus lines that run through predomi-

nantly Haredi neighborhoods. Haredi leadership has imposed upon these lines the requirement that women sitat the back of the bus. In late December an Israeli woman, Tanya Rosenblit, stepped unto a bus in Ashkelon

where she lives, and sat down in the front. Immediately a raucous erupted, and the police were summoned. Inaddition to the buses, these communities also have imposed segregation in local supermarkets, insisting that

men and women shop at different times. There are similar restrictions even for walking in the street.

Growing tension. . . . Within the past month, organizers of a conference on women’s health and Jewish lawbarred women from speaking from the podium, leading at least eight speakers to cancel; the Chief Rabbi of

the Air Force resigned his post because the Army declined to excuse ultra-Orthodox soldiers from attending

events where female singers perform; protesters depicted the Jerusalem Police Commander as Hitler on post-ers around town, because he instructed public bus lines with mixed-sex seating to drive through ul-

tra-Orthodox neighborhoods; vandals blacked out women’s faces on Jerusalem billboards. And, perhaps themost notorious, a YouTube video emerged of ultra-Orthodox men in the city of Beit Shemesh spitting upon,

and loudly taunting an 8-year-old girl as she walked to school. The girl, Naama Margulis, is Modern Ortho-

dox, and attends a Modern Orthodox yeshiva in Beit Shemesh. Though most of us would characterizeNaama’s clothing as “modest,” these Haredi men disagreed, and called her “whore.”

The public sphere. . . . Such behavior in the public sphere, as has been displayed by these Haredi men, is ille-

gal and intolerable in the State of Israel. In the name of religious zealotry, these men are, in fact, engaging inabusive, threatening behavior, and the police and government leaders must be held accountable for protecting

Israeli citizens. Perhaps more fundamental, however, is that Israel, a modern state, is experiencing what Pro-

fessor Moshe Halbertal (Hebrew University) characterizes as “an immense ideological and moral challengethat touches at the core of life.” Both the reality of Israel as a Jewish homeland and her character as a democ-

ratic state are facing increasing pressure, as ultra-Orthodox factions attempt to impose their understanding of religion upon the majority of Israelis, no matter what their religious inclinations. This being said, I would re-

mind you that while these groups of Haredim raise a loud raucous, they do NOT represent the majority of Is-raelis, nor, for that matter, the majority of Orthodox Jews, either in Israel or around the world. In fact the gen-

eral Israeli public is as outraged as we are, if not more so, by this antisocial behavior. In this light, it might be

interesting to consider a portion of the statement made in response to this series of events by a leading Ameri-can Modern Orthodox Rabbi, Rabbi Marc Angel, Rabbi of K.K. Shearith Israel (Spanish-Portuguese) on West

70th Street in Manhattan.

Officer’s Column

The Song of Union Temple

The first Sabbath this month is Shabbat Shira, the Sabbath of Song, so on Saturday morning, February 4th, I

will be – what else? – singing with the Union Temple Singers. Our wonderful leader, Temple Musician Shi-

nae Kim, has assembled a fine selection of music, including some familiar hymns, and some with settings that

are new, at least for us. And of course one of the songs will be Ozi V’zimrat Ya, a verse from the Song of theSea, the centerpiece of Shabbat Shira, which celebrates the Israelites’ crossing the Red Sea, from slavery in

Egypt to freedom in, well, a wilderness at first. But that’s another story.

Most Wednesday evenings at 7 PM, our handful of singers can be found rehearsing at the Temple. During theEngaging Israel series and other Wednesday evening adult education programs, we start and finish a little ear-

lier so that we can attend. We invite you to join us! We can always use a few more voices. Don’t fret about

being a total amateur (we all are!) and don’t imagine that it’s stressful at all. Quite the opposite, for me therehearsals are a fun and relaxing change of pace. So drop by one Wednesday evening and start singing with

us. The congregation will thank you.

-Steven Segall, Secretary

We live in a world where men and women can and do work, study, and socialize together in a modest

and serious way . . . While the Hareidi extremism has correctly been criticized for its unfair attitudesand treatment of women, I believe the Hareidi position is equally insulting and unfair to men. It assumes

that men are overwhelmed by passion and cannot control themselves when they are confronted with the

presence of females. It assumes that men simply cannot deal with women as fellow human beings, butonly as sex objects.

Without discounting the reality of sexual attraction and the need for modesty, it is imperative that we

recognize the legitimacy and necessity of proper interaction between males and females. If men have aproblem listening to a scientific paper presented by a female doctor, let those men leave the room--but

the female doctor should not be prevented from sharing her knowledge with her colleagues. If men feel

they can't control themselves if they sit next to a woman on a bus, let such men move to the back of the

bus--not penalize the women passengers. If some men feel they will lose control of themselves if a fe-male doctor goes on stage to receive an award, then let those men stay home.

The goal should be to create frameworks for normal interactions between men and women, where menand women conduct themselves properly without reducing each other to mere objects of sexual attrac-

tion. It could be argued that the higher are the walls of separation between men and women, the greater

the level of repression--and obsession with sex! It is not natural and not healthy to maintain a world view

that doesn't allow for normal, modest interaction between males and females.

IRAC and WOW. . . . Of course the Reform Movement, in the US, Israel, and around the world, has spoken

out in clear protest against those who attempt to hijack the public sphere. Two of the most vocal organizationsworking on behalf of women’s rights are IRAC - the Israel Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism - and

WOW - Women of the Wall. I am a supporter of both of these organizations and am grateful for the work they

do. For further information, and to get onto the mailing lists of both, you may access their websites online byentering their names. In addition, we will continue to examine our relationship with Israel, including a session

devoted specifically to Jewish practice in the public sphere, during our series “Engaging Israel,” which will

continue in April and May. Please join these edifying discussions.

 Preschool

Adding and GrowingThis is the height of the admissions season at the preschool. Applications for the fall 2012 were due in mid-January and plans are afoot for the next school year. Starting in September we will be offering a new program

at the preschool. Currently we offer half days with afternoon classes Monday through Thursday. This year’s

classes include; cooking, soccer, science and art. The afternoon classes are open to three and four year olds and

run from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM. Starting in September we will offer full days on Mondays and Wednesdays forour three and four year olds. In addition, dismissal will be extended from 2:30 PM to 3 PM. Rather than our

mixed age afternoon classes, where three and four year olds are combined, students will remain with kids in

the same age group for the afternoon. This will reduce the number of transitions during the day for the stu-dents, and give them longer periods of time to focus on activities. The goal is to slow down the pace of the day

and to give the kids longer periods of time to more deeply explore activities at their own pace. We will con-

tinue to offer “afternoon explorers” classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays for our three and four year olds. Dis-

missal on Tuesdays and Thursdays will also be extended from 2:30 PM to 3 PM.

Another component of our afterschool program is a French language immersion class which we added last

spring. This 45 minute class is offered on Fridays. The class is taught be Sophie Amieva, a native French

Speaker and co-founder of Brooklyn Beanstalk. Sophie’s locally based company offers classes in French andSpanish for children. Sophie has worked in the fields of puppetry and mime as well as teaching circus arts,

drama and movement. She has also taught clown performance to professional actors and undergraduate stu-

dents at New York University for the past six years. Sophie’s afterschool French class is extremely popular

and we are so fortunate to have her with us at the preschool.

 Religious School

Off and RunningShalom!

The new year has gotten off to a fabulous start at the Union Temple Religious School! Our First Fridays ser-vices continue to be well-attended, our teachers continue to cultivate lasting relationships and enduring under-

standings, and our students become ever more comfortable with our shared tradition and with one another.

Many thanks to the parents and staff who have contributed to our wonderful progress so far.

I would like to take the opportunity this month especially to thank the Religious School Committee, under theco-leadership of Faye White-Willinger and Mark Silverstein. Over the past few months, we have begun a pro-

gram of serious introspection and self-evaluation in order to see what we love about the Religious School and

how we can best focus on that in the years to come. We are in the early stages of developing a revised curricu-

lum for the Religious School, which will consider the areas of knowledge, action, belief, and belonging thatwe hope to develop in our students. I welcome any feedback that you may be able to share – as a parent, an

educator, or an invested congregant.

Again, many thanks to the hardworking lay leaders and community educators who are part of our team. The

school couldn’t run without you!

I wish you many blessings in the new year.

Livracha,

-Daniel Kirzane, Educator

A small but very literary group made it to the Brotherhood book discussion about The Blood of Lorraine by

Barbara Corrado Pope. It's a murder mystery set in France in the 1890's, at the time of the Dreyfus

trial. Andy Mirer led a good discussion about the book. The author is a historian, so the story was well re-searched and there was a good portrayal of the many conflicts in France at that time -- the anti-Semitism

around the time of the Dreyfus Affair, the liberals and conservatives in France at that time, the establishedFrench Jewish community and the newcomers from Eastern Europe, and so forth. On the other hand, some inthe discussion felt that some of the characters could have been more fully developed, and more clues to the

mystery could have been dropped along the way.

Be sure to mark your calendars for Saturday, March 31 for the Brotherhood Shabbat service and lunch. It’salways a very special event.

CLOTHING COLLECTION FOR

PROJECT HOPE:

CLOTHING ON HANGERS

PLEASE!

The Social Action Committee of Union Temple plans to

sponsor a clothing drive this coming Spring 2012, the pro-

ceeds of which will be donated to Project Hope, an organiza-

tion dedicated to helping disadvantaged adults re-enter the

work force.

As in the past, we are asking for donations of “gently worn” clothing for men and women that

is appropriate for the workplace, such as: suits, jackets, blazers, “smart casual” skirts and

slacks, shirts, coats and shoes.

We have always had a wonderful response by our Temple members and the local community

and hope to continue with this worthwhile project; however, we need to ask for your help in

changing the method of collection.

ALL CLOTHING YOU PLAN TO DONATE NEEDS TO BE PLACED ON HANGERS

PRIOR TO COLLECTION SO THAT IT CAN BE HUNG IN THE TEMPLE CLOSETUPON ARRIVAL. Although many of our contributors have done this already, many have not,

requiring that volunteers sort through heavy bags and hang the garments one by one--a difficult

and time consuming process.

So, please, save that suit! Hold on to that dress! It will become a most welcome contribution

to the Project Hope clothing drive. And if you no longer have room in your home and wish to

make a contribution of workplace clothing prior to this Spring, please bring it to Union Temple

on a hanger and we’ll hang it in our closet!

 Adam Clayton Powell

It's February, the frigid month when we warm our hearts with thoughts of love and … chocolate! We Jews have

a special relationship with this delectable treat: ancestors of ours who managed to escape the deadly Spanish In-

quisition took the secret of chocolate-making with them and spread it throughout the rest of the Western world.

Join Sisterhood on Sunday, February 12th at 10 AM., and learn all about this intriguing history and many othertantalizing secrets as we celebrate Jews and Chocolate. Bring your own favorite chocolate stories and be pre-

pared to sample all kinds of luscious goodies. This delicious program is open to all.

In March, we'll be exploring another fascinating facet of Jewish history. On Wednesday, March 21st, Sister-

hood is sponsoring a visit to the Emma Lazarus exhibit at the Museum of Jewish Heritage at 36 Battery Place in

Manhattan. Admission is free from 4 to 8 PM, and we'll meet in the lobby at 6 PM. All are welcome. Gail Levine

-Fried is coordinating the program. Please call her at 718-338-6123 to let her know if you will be joining us.

Watch this space and your mail for more information about the many great programs Sisterhood has coming your

way. Plan to be with us for them all, beginning with Jews and Chocolate on February 12th. As beloved cartoon-

ist Charles M. Schulz pointed out: "All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt."
