It has been a while since I stuck something in the church newsletter, but the announcement of a new worship leader on staff at the Walloon campus needed a little press! It gives me great pleasure to introduce Andy Stefanic as our newest staff member! Andy has been up front for a while now at Walloon, and has made the decision to leave Honeywell in Boyne City to come on staff full time! Andy and Rachelle (and Kyle) live in Ellsworth and also is no stranger to the East Jordan campus as he served part time on staff there for about 3 years. He has been part time at several other churches over the years, most recently at the Gaylord EV Free church. His heart and gifts are in worship music, so the timing of his desire to follow God's leading into a full time position was when we had that need to be met. No coin- cidences where Jesus is concerned! The search committee consisted of a lot of our own musicians as well as other staff and board members, and we were very grateful to find after the review of resumes and interview process that we could fill this position from within. We are very blessed to have the quality of music and such gifted people that serve the many attenders at both locations. The extra meeting times necessary was above and beyond the call of duty. My sincere thanks to all for your commitments to the ministry and service! We did not have a congregational meeting or a vote on this for several reasons, so let me explain why, in case you wondered. First, our constitution requires such a vote only for senior pastoral staff positions. Second, we had already approved at the annual meeting enough money for the position, so no adjustment to the budget was necessary. Third, as we grow, the adding to or replacement of employees needs to be less cumbersome, as our constitution was written in the days when the church then had but one employee, and times have changed. In other words, staffing needs to be more routine than having a church business meeting when we fill a position, and we have not done this for other positions such as the full time Children's Ministry one. Fourth, the inability to smoothly have just one meeting where we all can be together for now, with offset service times means that business meetings will be when nec- essary, only. The logistics are an issue, at least for now. In other board news, Myron Matz is the new Board secretary, as the old one got a promotion, I guess, to be our new Administrative Pastor! Thanks for helping out, Myron! And, in closing, thanks as always for letting me serve. Kevin for the Board. August Anniversaries Everyone has a story, my kids do, friends do, I do andeven you do. My story (like everyone’s) started with alot of empty pages, forty-nine years later a lot of thepages have been written. I’m thankful to say that Ican see the handiwork of the Author of my life woventhrough these pages.

Like any book, a good picture book or the Bible, ourstories are meant to be shared. We share our storieswhen we share life, experiences, ups and downs, tri-umphs and sorrows, joys and pains. (Yes, this may bea small group plug.) We share our stories when wewalk side by side, encouraging each other, sharingwith-God-all-things-are-possible stories, stories of ourHeavenly Fathers faithfulness.

Maybe even more importantly through sharing, wehave the opportunity to help write in others’ stories. All of our stories are still being written. At WLCC,you’ll find adults who have a lifetime of stories torelate to and learn from. You’ll also find childrenwhose stories are just beginning to be written. Eachof us has the opportunity to help write them. If God’sbeen the Author of your life, wouldn’t it be awesometo share Him with others? Are you going to pass onthe chance to share in someone else’s story? Or areyou going to jump in and share? You are holding the pen.

Committing to share your life through service can bescary. It’s putting others’ needs before your own, giv-ing up your time, and stepping out on a limb. It’s tak-ing a leap of faith, putting your trust in the Author ofLife, because you cannot do it without Him. It’s notabout knowing that YOU can do it, but about know-ing that with GOD’s help you can!

Ask just about any volunteer in the children ministryif they felt comfortable and ready to start volunteeringto work in the children’s ministry when they began, Ibet most of them would say “No!”. Ask what theirgreatest fear was and they would say that they were

afraid that they wouldn’t be able to do it, kids arescary! Ask what their biggest surprise was and it willprobably be that they are doing it and are enjoying itand are so thankful that they took the leap. Ask whattheir biggest reward is and you’ll get a range ofanswers, but I bet they all would revolve around therewards of knowing that they can make an eternalimpact on the children, hearing children’s storiesabout how God is working in their lives and learningright along side of them. Ask anyone serving in chil-dren’s ministry what advise they’d have for you andthey’ll say, “Just do it!” or “When do you start?”When you set your heart and mind on glorifying andserving Him, He will direct your path.

Remember, as each has received a gift, use it to serveone another, as good stewards of God's varied grace,1 Peter 4:10. Whatever you do, work heartily, as forthe Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lordyou will receive the inheritance as your reward. Youare serving the Lord Christ, Colossians 3:23-24.

It is our hope at WLCC that you find an area of min-istry where you feel at home, empowered to serve, and fully open to express the gifts God has given you;where you can Love Like Jesus.

Rejoice!Birthdays To Celebrate!

For the past five years, I have sponsored a univer-sity student in Compassion International'sLeadership Development Program. Evelin recentlycompleted her studies in nursing as well as theleadership training, and in June I was privileged tohave the opportunity to travel to Cartagena,Colombia (where Evelin is from) to attend theLeadership Program's graduation ceremony. What aprivilege to be present for the celebration of thismilestone! An even greater treasure was the time Icould spend with Evelin face to face, meet herfamily and her mentors, and make memories.

This trip was quite an adventure for me. My timewith Evelin made up only 2 days out of the weekthat I was in Cartagena; the rest of the week I wason my own. While I have traveled to a number ofdifferent countries before, always before I had beenpart of a group. It was a little (OK, a lot!) unnerv-ing to navigate the streets of an unfamiliar countrywith different customs, culture, and especially adifferent language. Knowing God is always presentwith me (going before and behind as well) made abig difference.

One of the best decisions I made was to book mylodging at a hotel with an internationally-knownname and reputation. While this may not have pro-vided the same kind of cultural experience that, say, a stay at a "boutique hotel" in the historic oldcity might have, it DID provide a haven I couldretreat to during my time in the city. Security cam-eras, limited access to each floor, and special keycodes helped ensure my safety. The hotel employ-ees were very helpful in answering questions, giv-ing advice, and arranging transportation. I knew Icould trust these people. I was very grateful for thisplace and the people who were there to serve theirclients.

In a similar way, as Christians, the time we spendin this world can be anxiety-producing. We arehere for a reason, and yet have the sense that this isnot home. 1 Peter calls us "aliens and strangers inthis world" (aka foreigners). One of the tools weare given is the church, not a building but the peo-ple that make up the body of Christ. During our"travels" in this life, the church should be a haven:a place that is safe & secure in the midst of anxietyor unrest, a place where the language (especiallythe language of praise) is heard and understood, and a place where the people can be trusted as weserve and as we help each other navigate unfamil-iar territory until it's time for us to head "home".May we each do our part...

"Consequently, you are no longer foreigners andaliens, but fellow citizens with God's people andmembers of God's household, built on the founda-tion of apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesushimself as the chief cornerstone." --Eph. 2:19-20

are together, every individual is expected to beinvolved and to participate. This active involve-ment is an effective way to learn better and deeper.

9. Small groups provide a source of encouragementand accountability. It’s easy to slip in and out ofchurch unnoticed. It’s not just large churches wherethis happens. People may be coming each Sundayservice, but not getting involved. However weknow, everyone needs accountability in their life, encouragement in their walk with God, or help insome way. Small groups provide a way to bettermeet these needs.

10. Small groups help to cultivate leadership withinthe church. Someone has to facilitate or host asmall group meeting. So, small groups give oppor-tunities for leadership development within thechurch.

If you haven’t been involved in a community smallgroup, I’d strongly encourage you to give it a try! We’ll be starting new groups in September. Callme, Cal Prins (231) 535-2288, ext 204 or fill out aCommunity Small Group Registration Form locat-ed in the foyer. I’d love to get you connected witha community of believers!

We are busy getting prepared for WLCC’s FallKick Off, which is just around the corner.Wednesday nights we will once again start up ourAWANA program at Walloon. The 2016-17AWANA Registration will begin in August

• Puggles: Open to volunteer’s children not old enough for Cubbies

• Cubbies, preschool: (2 years prior to kindergarten)

• Sparks: Kindergarten, First and Second Graders

• T&T: Third, Fourth and Fifth Graders

It’s an honor to work with your children as theyparticipate in our AWANA program. We consider ita privilege to partner with you in the spiritualgrowth of children. AWANA is a Bible memoryclub that consists of three parts: Game Time,Handbook/Small Group Time and Council (WholeGroup) Time. During these times, children willplay fun exciting team games, develop relation-ships with their leaders as they work through theirbook, discussing, practicing and reciting their Bibleverses, and hear God’s truth as it relates to the les-son for the day.

The name AWANA is derived from ApprovedWorkmen Are Not Ashamed as taken from 2Timothy 2:15. And while a portion of our club timeis spent on memorizing the Word of God, weequally emphasize the practical application to dailywalk with Him. We are already approved in JesusChrist, and no amount of Bible study will help usget approved or stay approved. For it is by graceyou have been saved, through faith and this is notfrom yourselves, it is the gift of God—not byworks, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9Instead, in 2 Timothy 2:15, Paul is urging Timothyto be diligent in living his life according to theGospel. And this is what children will hear eachweek at AWANA. In this way, they will becomeuseful for His plans for them, being prepared forevery good work (2 Tim 2:21).

This September will mark the beginning of ourthird year of AWANA at Walloon. We are alreadyplanning and prepping for another exciting year forCubbies, Sparks and T&T age children. We stillhave some funds left over from last year’s AWANApromotion month, during which we were able toraise funds to cover the cost for unchurched chil-dren to attend AWANA at Walloon and East Jordan.I’m looking forward to meeting the additional newfamilies we will able to reach for the Kingdom ofChrist. I'm excited to see how He will use ourWednesday night program to impact the communities of Northern Michigan!

Like many people, I used to be uncertain of smallgroups. At the time, I thought it was just a passingfad, and not something that fostered true disciple-ship and spiritual growth. After experiencing acommunity small group, and reading what theBible says about meeting together from house tohouse, I’ve come to realize how critical smallgroups are to helping people grow in their love foreach other and Jesus. Here are just a few reasonswhy I believe community small groups are soimportant:

1. Small groups foster close relationships andessential community. The small group atmosphereis ready-made for building friendships. People talkmore in small groups of people. People are quick torecognize needs, and help to meet them. The rela-tionships formed within small groups form strongbonds within the church. Relationships that areformed in small group settings often last a lifetime.

2. Small groups are a powerful missional tool.Inviting someone to a small group meeting pro-vides a way to involve a non-believer directly intoa community of believers—watching them live outtheir faith, listening to them pray, hearing themshare God’s work in their life, and learning moreabout the Bible. The non-believer is more likely toask questions, get answers, and form relationshipswith the believers. Small groups allow for thegreater spread of the gospel among non-believersin the community.

3. Small groups provide an ideal way to care forthe needs of people within the church and the com-munity. When one believer in a small group isstruggling financially, emotionally, spiritually, etc… it is much easier for the members of thegroup to notice and provide help. The structure of asmall group is essentially a community of believingfriends. As we develop a heart for helping eachother, we begin to move outside the church andinto the community…serving others in need.

4. Small groups provide a way for Christians tolive out their faith instead of merely hearing a ser-mon. If Sunday morning is for listening, then therest of the week is for living. Whether it’s dis-cussing the Sunday sermon, talking about a spiritu-al battle, or simply praying for one another, smallgroups create a context for Christians to live outtheir faith in real life.

5. Small groups join in focused prayer for oneanother. Prayer is an essential part of the Christianwalk. Small groups allow people to share their joysand struggles and then take the time to lift eachother up in prayer. I can’t tell you how manyprayers we’ve seen answered during the past yearin our community small group.

6. Small groups provide a comfortable atmospherefor openness. One thing I like about small groups isthat we meet in homes. There are many referencesin the New Testament include believers meeting inhomes or being part of a household. (Romans 16:5;1 Corinthians 16:19; Philemon 1:2; Acts 2:46).Homes are comfortable places to share life together.

7. Small groups allow believers to build each otherup. It’s easy to depend upon our pastors to give usour spiritual food. According to the Bible, Godgives spiritual gifts to all believers, not just thosewho preach on Sunday morning. These gifts are forthe benefit of the whole church. Every Christianshould minister to other Christians with his or hergifts. This happens most naturally, effectively, andpurposefully in small groups. Plus, we start to real-ize that other believers face the same problems we do.

8. Small groups encourage better learning.Listening to a sermon is a great way to learn theWord, but it is easy to become detached or day-dream during a sermon. We become passive listen-ers. Not so in a small group. When a few people

Beth Moore provides a personalstudy experience five days a week plus viewer guides for the group videosessions of this in-depth women's Bible study of the fruit of the Holy Spiritas presented in the book of Galatians. Beth will walk us through each traitlisted in the fruit and encourage us to know the freedom of a Spirit-filledlife. Through this study we will look at the aspects of the fruit and that youcannot grow, learn, or produce the fruit on your own. Beth challenges us to

develop the fruit by maintaining an intimate relationship with the Spirit of God. A Spirit-filledlife truly results in living beyond yourself.
