CONGRATULATIONS!

The CrystalTone works just like a standardtelephone. It also has some very helpfulfeatures. Please take a few minutes tofamiliarize yourself with its capabilities.

SPEED-DIAL EMERGENCY BUTTONSThe CrystalTone has three special buttons thatyou can program with emergency numbers.When you need to dial an emergency numberquickly, such as the police, just lift the receiverand press the button labeled with the pictureof a police badge ( ). The emergencybuttons are NOT preprogrammed. You willneed to program them before use (see “SavingEmergency Numbers” on page 8).

SPEED-DIAL DIRECTORY BUTTONSSave up to 10 frequently called numbers foreasy dialing. Once the number is saved, simplylift the receiver and press the desired Speed-Dial button to place a call.

REDIAL BUTTONWhen you get a busysignal, you can call backlater with the press of a button. Thebutton automatically calls the last numberthat was dialed.

FLASH BUTTONSome telephone service features like C a l lWaitingrequire a “hook flash” which is a verybrief interruption of the connection likehanging up the phone for one second. Thetiming for a hook flash can be tricky but the

button times it perfectly so you don’thave to worry about accidentallydisconnecting your call.

AUDIO JACKYou can connect some assistive listeningdevices and headsets directly into theCrystalTone audio jack (3.5 mm).

HOLD BUTTONYou can place a call on hold by pressing the

button. Neither you nor the person onthe other end of the line will hear sounds fromthe line. To resume your conversation, pressthe button a second time.

VOLUME (VOL)Everyone in your house can use theCrystalTone . When you need more volume,just press the button. The CrystalToneremembers any volume and tone adjustmentsmade previously. The amplification turns offwhen the receiver is hung up or when ispressed again.

LOUD RING WITH RING INDICATORThe ringer has a separate volume control soyou can select the ring volume and pitch thatwork best for you. Plus, the Ring Indicatorlights up whenever the phone rings to providea visual alert.

OUTGOING VOLUMEYou can amplify the sound of your voice beingheard by the person on the other end of theline with the button (OutgoingVolume).

MUTE BUTTONYou can silence your outgoing voice bypressing the button. The person on theother end of the line will not be able to hearsounds from where you are.

To set up the C r y s t a l To n e , all you do isconnect the telephone line! You can alsochoose to mount the phone on the wall.

CrystalTone includes the following parts:✔ CrystalTone amplified phone✔ Handset with coiled cord✔ 7-foot telephone line cord✔ 6-inch telephone line cord (for use when

mounting on wall)✔ Desktop/wall adapter

CAUTION! Do not plug the CrystalToneinto any telephone line other than a standard,analog telephone line. Connection to a digitalsystem may damage the CrystalTone or thetelephone system and will void your warranty.

1. SELECTING A LOCATIONThe CrystalTone requires a standard (analog)telephone line with either pulse or tone (alsocalled t o u c h t o n e) dialing. To use theC r y s t a l To n e with a digital system, somemodifications to the telephone line arerequired.

Set up the CrystalTone in a place where:✔ There is a phone jack nearby.✔ The surface it is set on, or mounted to, is

stable and secure.✔ The area is protected from excessive heat or

humidity.

2. REMOVE DESKTOP/WALL ADAPTERIf it is connected, remove the desk-top/walladapter. (This will bereplaced after setupis complete.)

3. SETTING PULSE OR TONE DIALINGThe CrystalTone is preset touse t o n e dialing becausethis is used by mosttelephone lines. If your lineuses pulse dialing, move theswitch located on the bottom of theCrystalTone to the “Pulse” setting.

4. SETTING UP THE CRYSTALTONE

For Desktop Use

1. Connect the uncoiled end of the handsetcord to the jack on bottom of theCrystalTone . Plug the other end of the cordinto the handset.

2. If the desktop/wall adapter is not removed,remove it now (see step 2).

3. Plug the telephone line cord into thetelephone line jack on the bottom of theC r y s t a l To n e and the other end into thewall phone jack.

4. Replace the desktop/wall adapter so thatthe larger side is along the top edge of theCrystalTone .

5. Set the C r y s t a l -Tone on a sturdysurface such as adesk, table orcounter.

Mounting on a Wall

1. Flip the handsethook over so thatthe hook pointsup and will holdthe handset whenyou hang it up.

2. Connect the uncoiled end of the handsetcord to the jack on bottom of theCrystalTone . Plug the other end of the cordinto the handset.

3. Plug the 6-inch telephone line cord intothe CrystalTone .

4. Replace the desktop/wall adapter so thelarger side is down. This aligns theCrystalTone so that it is flat when mountedon the wall.

5. Plug the telephone cord into the wall jack.Then, line up theholes in the wall-mount bracketwith the mount-ing studs on thewall plate. Hookthe bracket onthe studs then pull down.

5. CONNECTING AN EXTERNALSIGNALERTo use a separate, optional signal light, plugthe signaler into an unused extensiontelephone wall jack.If you have only onejack that is beingused by theC r y s t a l To n e , youcan use a “Y- J a c k ”(also called a“duplex jack”).Plug both the CrystalTone and the signalerinto the Y-jack and plug the Y-jack into thewall jack. You can purchase a Y-jack at anystore that sells telephones.

6. CONNECTING A HEADSET RECEIVERThe CrystalTone provides an audio jack fordirect audio connections with some assistivelistening technology. A headset with a 3.5 mmjack may also be used. The headset may beeither mono or stereo. The jack, which islabeled with the headset symbol ( ), is located on the right side of theCrystalTone .

CALLING & ANSWERINGThe C r y s t a l To n e works just like anytelephone.

PLACING A CALL1. Lift the Handset.2. Listen for the dial tone.3. Dial the number of the person you are

calling. When the person answers thephone, begin your conversation.

4. During a conversation, you may want toadjust the volume and quality of the soundcoming through the handset (see“Adjusting the Sound ” on the next page).

ANSWERING A CALL1. When you receive a call, the CrystalTone

rings and the Ring Indicator flashes slowlyalong with the rings.

NOTE: If the ring volume is not loudenough to alert you to a call, you canincrease the ring volume (see “Adjustingthe Sound” on the next page).

2. Pick up the handset to answer the call andbegin your conversation.

ADJUSTING THE SOUNDCONVERSATION VOLUMETo increase the overall volume of the person’svoice coming through the handset:1. Press the button. The red light comes

on.2. Slide the control, located on the

top of the CrystalTone , toward the rightside of the phone until the volume is acomfortable level for you.

VOLUMETo return the volume to your preferred setting,press the button at any time during aconversation. The red light comes on, and theCrystalTone recalls the settings for:✔ Conversation Volume✔ Conversation ToneThe amplification turns off when you hang upthe handset.

CONVERSATION TONEThe CrystalTone has two controls that worktogether to adjust the tone of the soundscoming through the handset. You may wish toexperiment to see which works best for you. 1. Set the Crystal To n e

switch, located on thebottom, to setting “A.”This enhances soundfor people with high-frequency hearing loss.

2. Press the button. The red light comeson.

3. Move the s l i d ec o n t r o l to experiencethe sound changes

while the other person is talking. If youslide it up, toward the top of the phone,more high-pitched sounds will comethrough the handset.

4. Set the Crystal Tone switch to setting “B.”People who experience low-frequencyhearing loss may prefer this setting.

5. You can experiment with differentcombinations of Crystal Tone setting A or Band Tone setting from low to high to getthe most effective setting.

6. When you have found the setting thatworks best for you, leave the Crystal Toneswitch in place.

Each time you press the button, theC r y s t a l To n e will return to your previoussettings. You may wish to adjust theslide control from time to time depending onwho you are speaking with.

RING VOLUMEYou can set the RingVolume to Off, Low,Medium or High with theswitch on the bottom ofthe CrystalTone .

RINGER ON/OFFYou can turn the ringer off using theswitch on the right side of the CrystalTone .This will also turn off the Ring Indicator, so itwill not light up when you get a call.

RING PITCHYou can change theringer pitch with theswitch on the bottom ofthe C r y s t a l To n e . Choosefrom low, medium orhigh pitch.

SPEED DIALINGSave up to 10 frequently called numbers foreasy, one-touch dialing. Plus, you can save upto 3 emergency numbers. Once the number issaved, simply lift the receiver and press thedesired Speed-Dial button to place a call.

NOTE: Speed-Dial buttons must be pro-grammed with the desired number before theywill dial. To program the Speed-Dial buttonssee “Saving Phone Numbers ” on the nextpage.

REDIALING THE LAST NUMBERWhen you get a busy signal, you can call backlater with the press of a button. Thebutton automatically calls the last numberthat was dialed. Just lift the handset and pressthe Redial button.

USING FLASHSome telephone service features like CallWaiting or 3-Way Calling require a “h o o kflash” which is a very brief interruption of theconnection like hanging up the phone for onesecond.

When using hookflash during a conversation,press the button. There is a brief clickor silence on the line. If using Call Waiting,the second call should now be connected.

ADJUSTING OUTGOING VOLUMEIf the person you are talking to tells you thatthey cannot hear you very well, you canincrease the volume of your outgoing voice bypressing the button.

When this feature is on, you can still increasethe volume of what you hear up to 15 db.

USING HOLDYou can place a call on hold by pressing the

button.

To use the Hold feature during a conversation,press the button. Confirm that the redlight above the button is lit. As long asthis light is on, the person on the other end ofthe line cannot hear what you are saying.When you are ready to resume yourconversation, press the button a secondtime. You can also resume your conversationfrom another telephone on the same line. Thisis done by hanging up the handset while theCrystalTone is on hold, then picking up thehandset of the second phone. The CrystalToneis automatically hung up.

USING MUTEYou can mute your outgoing voice by pressingthe button.

To use the Mute feature during a conversation,press the button. Confirm that the redlight above the button is lit. As long asthis light is on, the person on the other end ofthe line cannot hear what you are saying.When you are ready to resume yourconversation, press the button a secondtime.

SAVING PHONE NUMBERSNOTE: The Speed-Dial numbers are saved

using power that the C r y s t a l To n e r e c e i v e sfrom the telephone line. If you disconnect theC r y s t a l To n e from the wall jack, or if thetelephone company experiences an outage foran extended period of time , the Speed-Dialnumbers may be erased.

SAVING EMERGENCY NUMBERSThe CrystalTone has three buttons reserved foremergency numbers:

You choose what number is stored for eachbutton. These buttons are NOTpreprogrammed with emergency numbers.

NOTE: The Speed-Dial buttons with thesesymbols are provided only as a convenience.Ultratec assumes no responsibility forcustomer reliance upon this memory feature.

Follow the steps under “Saving Speed-DialNumbers ” to set emergency numbers, exceptthat in Step 4, press the Emergency buttoninstead of the Speed-Dial Directory button.

SAVING SPEED-DIAL NUMBERS1. Lift the handset.2. Press the button.3. Dial the phone number that you wish to

save just as if you were calling thatnumber.

4. Press the Speed-Dial Directory button thatyou wish to use for this number.

5. Hang up the handset.6. Remove the clear plastic Directory cover:

Use the point of a pencil or other smallobject to lift from the notches located oneach side of the cover.

7. In black ink, write the first name of theperson on the Directory label. There is aspace next to each Speed-Dial button. Printlarge, clear letters so you will be able to seeeasily which person you are calling.

8. Repeat these steps for each number thatyou save. Replace the clear plasticDirectory cover when you are finished.

CARE & REPAIRCLEANINGNever use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Unplugthe CrystalTone and wipe with a damp cloth.If necessary, use a small amount of mild soapsuch as dishwashing soap on the cloth.

PROBLEM SOLVINGMy CrystalTone does not ring whenI get a call.

Check the Ringer on/off switch on the rightside of the CrystalTone .

Be sure that the ringer switch on the bottom ofthe CrystalTone is not set to Off. If you havetoo many phones and/or computer modemshooked up in your home, you may haveexceeded the “ringer equivalence” of yourtelephone service. Contact your telephoneservice provider to verify that your service isadequate for your needs.

All of my Speed-Dial numbers havebeen erased.

There was probably an extended interruptionin the telephone line. The S p e e d - D i a lnumbers are saved using power theCrystalTone receives from the telephone line.If you disconnect the CrystalTone from thewall jack or if the telephone companyexperiences an outage, the Speed-Dialnumbers may be erased after about 45minutes.

The volume coming through thehandset is not loud enough.

Make sure the Outgoing Volume is off. Thebutton and light are on the top of the

C r y s t a l To n e (see “Adjusting OutgoingVolume ” on page 7).

You may also notice a decrease in v o l u m ewhen another phone on an extension of thesame line is also off hook.

I experience feedback or a “squeal”when hanging up the handset orsetting it down on a table.

Press the button to turn offamplification before setting down the handsetor hanging up.

REPAIRIf your CrystalTone is not working, we may beable to help you solve the problem over thetelephone. Call Ultratec at the number on theinside front cover of this manual.

Follow these steps if you need to send theCrystalTone to our repair center:1. Pack it in the original shipping carton or a

similar sturdy box.2. Include a note that describes the problem.

The note will help our technicians find theproblem.

3. Insure the C r y s t a l To n e for shipment.Ultratec or an authorized Ultratec repaircenter is not responsible for damageduring shipping to the center.

The REN is used to determine the quantity of devices whichmay be connected to the telephone line. Excessive RENs onthe telephone line may result in the devices not ringing inresponse to an incoming call. In most, but not all, areas the

sum of RENs should not exceed five (5.0). To be certain ofthe number of devices that may be connected to a line, asdetermined by the total RENs, contact the local telephonecompany.

If trouble is experienced with your CrystalTone , for repairor warranty information, please contact Ultratec Inc.Customer Service at (608) 238-5400 (V/TTY). If theequipment is causing harm to the telephone network, thetelephone company may request that you disconnect theequipment until the problem is resolved.

This equipment cannot be used on public coin phoneservice provided by the telephone company. Connection toparty line service is subject to state tariffs.

Your telephone company may discontinue your service ifyour equipment causes harm to the telephone network.They will notify you in advance of disconnection, ifpossible. During notification, you will be informed of yourright to file a complaint to the FCC.

Occasionally, your telephone company may make changesin its facilities, equipment, operation, or procedures thatcould affect the operation of your equipment. If so, you willbe given advance notice of the change to give you anopportunity to maintain uninterrupted service.

INDUSTRY CANADA WARNINGSNOTICE: The Industry Canada Label identifies certifiedequipment. This certification means that the equipmentmeets telecommunications network protective, operationaland safety requirements as prescribed in the appropriateTerminal Equipment Technical Requirementsdocument(s). The Department does not guarantee theequipment will operate to the user's satisfaction.

Before installing this equipment, users should ensure thatit is permissible to be connected to the facilities of the localtelecommunications company. The equipment must alsobe installed using an acceptable method of connection.The customer should be aware that compliance with theabove conditions may not prevent degradation of service insome situations.

Repairs to certified equipment should be coordinated by arepresentative designated by the supplier. Any repairs oralterations made by the user to this equipment, orequipment malfunctions, may give the telecommunicationscompany cause to request the user to disconnect theequipment.

NOTICE: The Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) assignedto each terminal device provides an indication of themaximum number of terminals allowed to be connected toa telephone interface. The termination on an interface mayconsist of any combination of devices subject only to therequirement that the sum of the Ringer EquivalenceNumber of all the devices does not exceed 5.

1. Read and understand all instructions.2. Follow all warnings and instructions on the

CrystalTone .3. Unplug the C r y s t a l To n e from the t e l e p h o n e

jack before cleaning. Do not use liquid or aer-osol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning.

4. Do not use the C r y s t a l To n e near water, forexample, near a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchensink, laundry tub, in a wet basement or near aswimming pool.

5. Do not place the CrystalTone on an unstablecart, stand or table. The CrystalTone may fall,causing serious damage to the CrystalTone .

6. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do notdisassemble the CrystalTone , but take it to aqualified service person when service or repairwork is required. Opening or removing coversmay expose you to dangerous voltages or otherrisks. Incorrect re-assembly can cause electricshock when the C r y s t a l To n e is subsequentlyused.

7. Avoid using a telephone (other than a cordlesstype) during an electrical storm. There is aremote risk of electric shock from lightning.

8. Unplug the CrystalTone from the wall outletand refer servicing to qualified servicepersonnel under the following conditions:a. If liquid has been spilled into the phone.b. If the phone has been exposed to rain orwater.c. If the phone does not operate normally.Adjust only those controls that are covered bythe operating instructions. Improperadjustment of other controls may result indamage and will often require extensive workby a qualified technician to restore the phone tonormal operation. There are no user-serviceable parts.d. If the phone has been dropped and/ordamaged.e. If the phone exhibits a distinct change inperformance.

9. Do not use the CrystalTone to report a gas leakin the vicinity of the leak.
