WHY TEACH CAUSE AND EFFECT RELATIONSHIPS?

This unit is intended for 2nd grade students, including students with Early Intermediate and Intermediate English language proficiency

I chose the theme of cause and effect relationships because it is a 2nd grade reading standard. The standard is listed as Literary Text: Develop an Interpretation- Describe cause-and-effect of specific events (EL.02.LI.06)

I also chose this theme because it is something that students have some background knowledge about because of being in cause and effect situations themselves. It is an important concept for students to understand because it is something that they will experience throughout their lives

STRATEGIES USED THROUGHOUT UNIT TO HELP

ELL STUDENTS Visuals (YouTube video of skateboarders,

TumbleBooks, and student generated YouTube videos)

Sentence Frames (help students express their understanding of a cause and effect relationship and practice using the language)

Think Aloud (teacher helps model cause and effect relationships in read alouds)

Think-Pair-Share (students will share ideas with each and model language as they share)

LESSON #1 Ask students to share if they know what ‘cause’ or

‘effect’ mean (maybe Think-Pair-Share) Share with students the meaning of words Show students baggie with egg inside Drop egg and ask students what happened (students

answer) and ask them why that happened (students answer)

Draw a picture of the cause and effect on the poster and fill in sentence frames with student’s responses

Show students YouTube video of skateboard bloopers Discuss what caused the skateboarder to stay on or

fall off of his skateboard

LESSON #2 Review skateboard video and the meaning of cause

and effect Introduce sentence frames Have students practice with a partner describing

cause and effect relationships in the video using sentence frames

Share and discuss students observations

LESSON #3 Review meaning of ‘cause’ and ‘effect’ Show Life and Death of Ice Cream YouTube video Students will generate a list of possible causes for why

the ice cream melts Students will Think-Pair-Share the cause and effect

relationships from the video and the list using the sentence frames

Students will write their five favorite causes for why ice cream would melt using the sentence frames as needed

LESSON #4 Review the meaning of ‘cause’ and ‘effect’ Review cause and effect situations that we have

discussed (in stories and in real-life) from previous lessons

We are assuming students have access to Flip videos and know how to use them appropriately

Working in groups of four, students will choose one cause for melting ice cream and record a video of the process while voicing the cause and effect relationship using a sentence frame

LESSON #5 Students will upload their videos to YouTube with a link

on the classroom blog and write an explanation of their video describing the cause and effect relationship using the sentence frames

Students will present their videos to the class  Home-School Connection: Students will share their

video with their family and respond to each other’s videos on the blog

CLASSROOM BLOG At the beginning of the year, there will be a screencast

posted on the classroom blog that shows parents and students how to navigate and use this essential classroom tool

Parents will be able to view their child’s work and have up-to-date information about what their students are studying and what is going on at school
