using technology for social change
DESCRIPTION
Technology has enabled many individuals and institutions to bring change to the communities they care about. Civil society organizations can view that as a threat or they can evolve to take advantage of these trends and the enabling technologies. This talk was given at UC Berkeley's School of Information in February, 2011.TRANSCRIPT

2. We get NGOs stuff.
![Page 6: Using Technology for Social Change](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061121/546f455baf7959330b8b6bdf/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)

3. We share the ways those organizations
create change.
![Page 9: Using Technology for Social Change](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061121/546f455baf7959330b8b6bdf/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
![Page 10: Using Technology for Social Change](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061121/546f455baf7959330b8b6bdf/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
![Page 11: Using Technology for Social Change](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061121/546f455baf7959330b8b6bdf/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
After two decades doing this work, I’ve come to
believe:
![Page 12: Using Technology for Social Change](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061121/546f455baf7959330b8b6bdf/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Nongovernmental organizations are community hubs.
![Page 13: Using Technology for Social Change](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061121/546f455baf7959330b8b6bdf/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
NGOs provide unique access to and insights about
some of society’s most intractable issues and least
visible populations.
![Page 14: Using Technology for Social Change](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061121/546f455baf7959330b8b6bdf/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
But organizations must change to remain relevant.
![Page 15: Using Technology for Social Change](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061121/546f455baf7959330b8b6bdf/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
And by relevant I mean: matter to and create impact
in their communities.
![Page 16: Using Technology for Social Change](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061121/546f455baf7959330b8b6bdf/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
But they need help.
![Page 17: Using Technology for Social Change](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061121/546f455baf7959330b8b6bdf/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
And by help I mean: you.
![Page 18: Using Technology for Social Change](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061121/546f455baf7959330b8b6bdf/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
But first, some trends.
![Page 19: Using Technology for Social Change](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061121/546f455baf7959330b8b6bdf/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
1. Free agents.
![Page 20: Using Technology for Social Change](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061121/546f455baf7959330b8b6bdf/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)

2. Open data initiatives.
![Page 23: Using Technology for Social Change](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061121/546f455baf7959330b8b6bdf/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)

3. Corporate Social Responsibility.
![Page 26: Using Technology for Social Change](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061121/546f455baf7959330b8b6bdf/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)

So how do NGOs need to change?
![Page 28: Using Technology for Social Change](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061121/546f455baf7959330b8b6bdf/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
