Using RAZ-Kids at Home

Your child has used RAZ-Kids in the computer lab for a month now. This reading program has been purchased by our PTA for students at LW. I purposely wait to open this program for home use until I know the students understand what is expected of them. In order for this program to work there are 5 steps.

1. The student selects a book from his or her assigned library and listens to the recording at least 2 times. He or she should be mouthing the words with the person speaking rather than listening passively.

2. Then the student reads it by him or herself. 3. When you child feels s/he is fluent, s/he will ask you to listen to

him or her read the whole book. If they struggle with the title or other words in the text, have him or her listen once again to the recording. Then you listen to them again to see if they are fluent. If you feel he or she is fluent, then give permission to take the quiz.

4. The student takes the quiz. They are not expected to read the questions or answer choices by themselves. If they click the cursor on the question and the answers, the program will read them aloud. Then the student may select the circled letter of the answer he or she thinks is correct.

5. If the student passes the quiz, s/he is free to pick another book and the process starts again.

If your child is using RAZ-Kids at home and never asking you to listen to him or her read, then they are doing it wrong. There is no point in reading text incorrectly. That is why your participation is critical. Thanks for supporting your child in this way if you decide to use RAZ-Kids at home. I’ve attached a bookmark which outlines the steps. It’s a handy way for you and your child to follow the steps easily. Ms. Obukowicz
