Section 1: Introduction
Integration of Blackboard and Questionmark Perception (QMP) is made possible through a piece of software referred to as the Blackboard connector. This allows the two systems to communicate behind the scenes and places QMP tools into the Blackboard interface for Course Instructors to use.
The connector enables Blackboard Course instructors to:
Enrol and create groups of participants in QMP (synchronise Blackboard Users and Questionmark Users)
Schedule QMP assessments View results via the Blackboard Grade Centre Access QMP coaching reports for individual students
The connector enables students to:
Take a QMP test from within Blackboard View their results in Blackboard ‘My Grades’
Instructors wishing to use the connector must observe the following:
1. Before using the connector, you must have had training in the use of QMP and discussed your online assessment plans with member of the TEL team.
2. QMP assessments cannot be authored or edited in Blackboard, i.e. only scheduled.
3. Students are able to take a test scheduled via Blackboard directly through Questionmark. You may wish to warn them that if they do, their grade won’t be able to view in Blackboard’s ‘My Grades’.
4. Assessment results are recorded in both QMP and the Blackboard Grade Centre. They can be moderated in the Blackboard Grade Centre but changes to grades will not be reflected in QMP.
5. We do not recommend using Internet Explorer 9 due to known issues with this browser. All other recent bowers and versions are believed to function properly.

Workflow
The following diagram illustrates the workflow for instructors and students and the interactions between the two systems.
Section 2: Setting up the Blackboard connector The following series of steps will take you through the typical process involved in using the
connector from both the administrator and the student points of view.
Step 1: Preparing QMP Assessments
In order to deliver a QMP assessment through Blackboard you must first check (using Authoring
Manager) that the assessment has been configured to run within Blackboard. To do this, follow
the steps below.
a) Open Authoring Manager b) Select your assessment, right click and select ‘edit assessment’ c) Right click on ‘Control Box’ and select ‘Edit Settings’

Step 2: Switching on the QMP tools
To use the QMP connector from within a Blackboard course you must first ensure that the QMP
tools have been switched on. This only needs to be done once for a Blackboard course. However,
you will need to repeat the procedure for all other Blackboard courses you wish to use the
connector with.
1. Log into Blackboard at www.ole.bris.ac.uk
2. Go in to the relevant Blackboard Course
3. Expand the ‘Customisation’ option in the Control Panel by clicking on the arrows next to it
4. Click on ‘Tool Availability’
5. Scroll down to locate the ‘Questionmark options’ and tick all three relevant options (as
shown below).
Step 3: Accessing the QMP Control Panel
The screenshot below shows the QMP Control Panel in Blackboard. To access this
a) Click on ‘Course Tools’ in the Blackboard course control panel
b) Click on ‘Questionmark’ (after which you should see the QMP Control Panel shown in the
screen shot below)
1. ‘Log in to Enterprise Manager’ allows Instructors to access the Questionmark user
management interface (Enterprise Manager) in a different window.
b3. Synchronize
b1. Access enterprise
manager b2. Access results
b4. Hide
schedules

2. Click on ‘View results’ for an overview of students’ results, including time taken,
and a link to ‘View Now’ that allows you to explore the Questionmark Coaching
report for an individual student. The report shows detailed information on how the
students have answered the questions. Please note that the report opens in a
separate page, to return to the Questionmark Perception Control Panel click on the
back button of the browser.
3. Synchronise now - After making the Questionmark connector available in the Tool
area you will need to enable the synchronisation of users from Blackboard into
Questionmark. The synchronization option creates a matching group in Enterprise
Manager and imports students and instructors enrolled on the course.
NOTE: although the synchronisation creates an administrator profile for instructors
to access Enterprise Manager, Blackboard instructors can only schedule tests if they
have permission to access an assessment folder in the Questionmark shared
repository.
c) Click on ‘Synchronise Now’ to start the synchronisation of instructors and
students. Afterwards you will see a message alerting you about the latest
synchronisation. You will only need to click this option once, after that date any
update between Blackboard and Sits will automatically apply to Questionmark.
4. Hide schedule from students in Course Tools view - Select this option if you
want to hide the list schedules from the Course tool view. This however will not
hide the schedules that are individually added in the content area. From the student
point of view it needs to be clear in which area of the course they need to go to
access the schedule.
Step 3: Creating Schedules
Go into the content area where you want to add a QMP assessment. Hover your mouse over
‘Assessment’ and Select ‘Questionmark Schedule’. This will open the scheduling window
where you will be able to set up your schedule.
Please note that the Blackboard connector only allows you to schedule one assessment at a time.

Scheduling window
The numbers in the screen shot below relate to the numbered instructions below it.
1. Log into Enterprise Manager
Log into Enterprise Manager is an option that allows Instructors to load the Enterprise Manager
in a new browser window, i.e. in case you need to assessment settings. Note that this only gives
access to the basic functionality of browser base authoring and it is strongly recommended to
finalise questions and assessment in Authoring Manager before scheduling test via Blackboard.
2. Schedule name
Enter the schedule name. This can be the name of the test itself (i.e. Grammar) or a name
referring to the purpose of the test (i.e. revision, mock). The name you choose will be used for
the column title in the Grade Centre. You can also add a description to provide more information
about the test or instructions.
3. Store results in the Grade Centre
From the drop down list select whether you want to record the score in percentage or in points,
or not to record the results in the Grade Centre.
4. Select result to display in Grade Centre
Select which result you want to save, options are ‘First’ (as first attempt), Last, Best or Worst.

5. Select assessment to schedule
Select the assessment you wish to schedule. In the drop down list you should see the
assessments contained in your folders/subfolders in ‘Authoring Manager’.
6. Limit attempts
To enter the number of attempts, tick in the box and enter a number in the text box next to it.
7. Create a schedule for each group participant
If you tick this box each student will have an individual schedule. If you leave it unchecked the
system will create a group schedule.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you create a group schedule the ‘Limit Attempt’ box needs to be
unchecked, otherwise if, for example, you set the attempts to ‘2’ attempts for a group schedule
only the first two students accessing the test will be able to take it then it will become
unavailable.
8. Set access period
Set the date and time when the test will be available to students. This time is independent from
the duration of the test. For example if a test is 30 minutes long and it scheduled between 1200-
1400 students accessing the test at 13.50 will still have 30 minutes available to complete it.
9. Permit users to view this content
Click ‘YES’ if you want to make the schedule available to the students, or ‘NO’ if you don’t want
them to see it in the content area.
Step 4: Retrieve grades from Grade Centre
In the Blackboard Course Control Panel; a) Click on Grade Centre b) Select the option ‘Full Grade Centre’. The results will appear under the column with the name you have given to the schedule. If you don’t want the students to see their scores, click on the arrow in the column name and select ‘show/hide to users’. In the Grade Centre it is possible to change individual scores if needed, however, although the students will see the edited results the changes will not automatically be transferred to Questionmark. To edit the score, click in the box and enter the new score.

Through the Gradecentre instructors can provide a quick comment to each individual student by clicking on the arrow next to the grade and selecting the option quick comment, this
comment will appear next to the grade in My Grades.
Step 5: Take a test
a) Log into Blackboard using a student account and go into the relevant content area where you will see the list of test (s) scheduled for you.
b) Click on the name of the test to go to the detailed schedule window where you can see more information about number of attempts, status, start time and end time. c) Click on start the test to begin and click on ‘Submit’ to submit your answers and go back to the content area.
Step 6: Retrieve grades from ‘My grades’
a) To view your grades, go to the Blackboard home page and click on ‘my grades’ under Tools.
