Using OpenOffice to create charts with error bars

Highlight your data, go to the insert menu and select chart:

Select the x-y scatter graph (must be a 2d type):

Double click the chart to format it. The screen should look like this:

On the chart select the data series by clicking on it:

Under Y Error bars select the cell range option, check same value for both then using the select data range button next to the positive parameters textbook select your standard deviation range:

Your chart should now look like the one below. Customise, the title, axis labels and symbols as appropriate. When finished it can be cut and paste into MS Word (or the your alternative) as a picture:
