长白山自然保护区建于1960 年，它以长白山天池为中心，总面积 196465 公顷，是我国建立最早、地位最重要的自然保护区之一。长白山是一座巨型复式火山，由于其独特的地理位置和地质构造，形成了神奇壮观的火山地貌，典型完整的动植物资源，富有北国情趣的冰雪风光。

长白山是欧亚大陆北半部最具有代表性的典型自然综合体，是世界少有的“物种基因库”和“天然博物馆”。据统计，这里生存着 1800多种高等植物，栖息着50 多种兽类， 280 多种鸟类， 50 种鱼类以及 1000 多种昆虫。

长白山的密林深处盛产人参、北五味子等药材，野生动物有濒临绝灭的东北虎及马鹿、紫貂、水獭、黑熊等。鸟类中鸳鸯、黑鹳、绿头鸭等候鸟占 70% 。长白山也是松花江、图门江、鸭绿江三江的发源地。经联合国教科文组织批准， 1980 年长白山保护区加入国际生物圈保护区网，被列为世界自然保留地 ,在世界自然保护区中的地们日益突出，对外联系和交流日益扩大，成为了具有世界意义的自然保护区 , 越来越被世界人民和有关组织所关注。
