A. Background• The large number of students in classroom makes students feel bored Many students master the theory better than practice One of strategies to improve vocabulary is media In this case, we may use comics The reasons are : light and easy-to-understand, and simple sentence structures
B. Problem Statement How is the result of using English comics as a medium of teaching story retelling? Is comic effective as a medium of teaching story retelling?

C. Objective• To find out whether there is any significance difference in the improvement of students’ mastery. To identify the effectiveness of English comics as a medium of teaching.
D. Scope of the Research The comics used for this study from 17th edition The Very Best of Donald Duck Comics This also concluded that the 9 2th year students of SMKN 1 Bajeng
E. Significance for students, it may motivate students to improve their interest in learning English for teachers, it may be used as a consideration in teaching story retelling

A. Previous Related Research
Ansar (2000) teaching vocabulary in narrow sense need to be presented in the way that catch the students’ attention
Mariyati (2005) finds that using picture can motivate the students to learn vocabulary
Nikmawati (1993) finds that teaching vocabulary through pictures make the words memorazisation easier and the lesson is more interesting.

A. Research DesignIt applies a quasi experimental method with pre-
test and post-test design.
B. Research Variables and Operational Definition of Terms• Dependent Variable : The use of comics in increasing the student’s vocabulary• Independent Variable : Student’s vocabulary in profession, activity, and place• Vocabulary : total numbers of words that have different terms and meaning of language which are use to communicate in all side of humans life• Comic : an art work which has sequence of stories about characteristics, events in picture form which can be humorous, mysterious, etc.

C. Population and Sample1. Population : The first year students of SMP
Negeri 1 Bajeng. It consists of six classes with 30 students. The total is 180 students.
2. Sample : It uses Cluster random technique. The total is consist of 60 students.
D. Research InstrumentThe research instrument is a vocabulary
test; translate into Indonesia and match words. 20 items covering profession, 20 items covering activity, and 20 items covering place
