Using Cloud AppsPhil Davis - 2018
What is the Cloud?
The Cloud describes computers that are located somewhere that you are not!
You communicate with them using a network.
Ordinary folks have been using the cloud ever since we plugged in our first dial-up modems.
The geeks among us were talking to the cloud from the day we gave up our beloved IBM punch cards!
TerminologyBig Iron -- monster computers locked away in a climate-controlled room and only accessible by trained acolytes.
Distributed Servers -- smaller computers, sometimes clustered together, may or may not be “managed."
Server Farm -- a large collection of very small computers locked away in a climate-controlled room and only accessible by trained acolytes.
Personal Computing Devices (PCD) -- any computer device that you can control, touch, feel, curse at, and break. Includes laptops, desktops, tablets, and smartphones. You are your own acolyte!

Remote Access
1970s: Big iron with dumb terminal access
Minicomputers
1980s: Minicomputers with dumb terminal access
Personal Computers
mid-1980s: Local processing, apps, data storage on PCs
WorldWideWeb
December 1990: First website at CERN
Proliferation of PCDs
1990-2012: Local processing, apps; data storage local & on distributed servers; distributed servers with limited PCD access.

Tomorrow
Future: Quantum; biological; wearable computers … Cloud storage is passive. Cloud computing is active.

iCloud
Google Drive
Provides cloud storage for both Google and non-Google files.• The three office apps (Docs, Sheets, and Slides) are popular
in the consumer, education, and business sectors.
• Google Slides & Sync provides offline viewing and creation of new documents even when you don’t have a network connection.
• Google Drive and Google Apps support collaboration.

Should I Use Cloud Computing?
Local ProcessingBenefits
• All files reside on computer• Applications run on computer• User decides when and where to save files• Network connection not required
Limitations• All files reside on computer (subject to disaster)• Unsaved files are lost if power or OS is disrupted• User responsible for hardware and software maintenance,
updates, and backups
Cloud Computing
• Most cloud apps will run in any modern web browser
• Most will run on all personal computing devices• Desktop and Laptop computers• Apple and Android Tablets• Apple and Android SmartPhones• Chromebook
Cloud Computing
Benefits• Access your files from any location and device with fast
internet access• Vulnerability to power outages and O/S disruptions is
lower• Applications have most of the features you use the most • Applications do not have to be updated and installed• Easier file sharing and collaboration• Files are automatically backed up

Cloud Computing
Limitations• Need access to the Internet, however many cloud apps
have offline support• Protection of your account password is critical• A third-party may have access to your files, with the
possibility that they might be: • Used for marketing purposes• Subpoenaed by a court• Be sure to check the privacy provisions
