Not just high stakes testing or competing for the best grades
Is used daily
Focuses on what students know/need help with
What is Assessment?
Assessment for Learning NOT of Learning
The focus should shift from assessing what the students’ know to assessing in order to
guide instruction
Teachers should understand the sub skills and knowledge that students needs to succeed
Develop a lesson bank with other teachers
Create formative assessments based on different learning styles
Start with the standards
Give students rubrics or checklists that show and explain how they will be assessed
Include examples of work that is good and work that needs improvement
Involve the Learners
Used daily by teachers-when used properly can provide insight into students thinking and reasoning
Questioning
Should be timely, correct, and appropriate
Should include how to improve NOT just if it is right/wrong
Feedback
Assessment can be a great instructional tool to help teachers guide/change their
instruction throughout the unit rather than waiting to assess at the end and have to
remediate.
Some ideas: Questioning, providing appropriate feedback, including students’
by giving them examples, rubrics, and checklists
