Development of information literacy and academic integrity skills have been a component of the subject for a number of years.

o Information Literacy component worth 10% of overall course mark.

With a variety of approaches and assessment tasks supported by library workshops, learning materials delivered via Blackboard, and online discussions.

Issues

Information literacy sessions and related assessment task placed emphasis on lower order thinking and information seeking behaviours, rather than information using behaviours.

Assessment task disjointed from other course assessment items.

Need for greater focus on principles related to academic integrity.

“… we have to ask ourselves whether undergraduates really need software for referencing. Perhaps they would learn the principles of referencing more effectively if

they had to format the references manually? Most currently do so.” 4.

Support and encouragement across Faculties within the University of Newcastle to incorporate EndNote use into undergraduate student’s strategy for good practice in academic integrity and referencing.
