Designing the Basemap

• Try different color ramps for raster datasets.• Experiment with different hillshade techniques.• Try different Raster Tools.

– ESRI Terrain Tools toolbox download– http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=4b2ea7c5f87d476a8849c804b81667aa

• Learn about new techniques and toolsets.– Many free e‐learning options at ESRI with an organizational account.

Color

• Be familiar with the customary colors for your map theme, and then decide if you want or need to change them to get your desired look.

• Experiment with different colors—try something you have not tried before.

• Go beyond the defaults.

Designing the Map Content

• Try datasets from different times, if applicable.• Experiment with unusual techniques for symbolizing map elements.– Negative buffers for borders.– Use labels as point features instead of points.– Experiment with vignette designs.– Experiment with multiple layers with transparency set to allow more than one layer to show.

Fonts

• Choose fonts that complement and add to the story of your map.

• Cartographer’s Toolkit: Colors, Typography, Patterns by Gretchen N Peterson.

• Experiment and try new things.• Go beyond the defaults!

Customizing the Surnames Layer

• Surname text was chosen to complement the historic nature of the data being mapped.– Goudy Medieval for surnames.– Goudy Old Style for other map elements.

• Size of the surname indicates how many people with that surname were born in that county.

• Surnames are placed to reflect the population density within each county at the time of the census.

Designing the Map Layout

• Experiment with map marginalia designs.• Use inset maps when appropriate.• Use cartographic representation to help make map elements “pop”.

• Use a map grid and index if it suits your purpose.

Tick Tock Goes the Clock

• Lots of “little” touches adds up to lots of time• Is it really worth the extra time and effort?

– Consider the alternative: a bad map.– Try a “before and after” comparison.– Try motivation through recognition.
