4 Set the Handset Ringer ON/OFFswitch. Set the switch on the side ofthe handset to ON so the handsetwill ring. When this switch is set toOFF the handset will not ring.

NOTE: If you set the Ringer ON/OFF switchto OFF, the handset battery will last longer.However, when the ringer is set to OFF, youwill always need to press P to answer acall, even when the handset has been in thebase.

5 Connect the telephone line cord.Plug one end of the telephone linecord into the jack on the back of thebase. (If you are wall mounting thephone, wrap the excess cord in the

8 Charge the handset batteries be-fore use.Place the handset face down in thebase. The CHARGING light on the

base goes on to show the handset isin the right position to charge thebatteries. The batteries will be fullycharged in 14 hours.

9 Check for dial tone.Make sure the base antenna isupright. After the batteries arecharged, pick up the handset andcheck for dial tone by pressingP; the PHONE light shouldgo on and you should hear a dialtone. Press P to hang up.

10 Set the dial mode.If you have touch tone service, thephone will be ready to use as soonas the battery is charged.

If you have dial pulse service, you’llneed to set the dial mode. Press

P (wait for dial tone), p,#, #, #. 3. To return to touch tonedialing with touch tone service,when the phone is off, press P

(wait for dial tone), p, #, #,#, 8.

IMPORTANT: After you have installedthe 7610, you will need to record anannouncement that callers will hear whenthe system answers. Please see theAnswering System Operation section ofthis manual.

Charging theHandset Battery PackThe batteries need charging when:• The phone beeps four times when you

press P.• The LOW BATTERY light on the

handset flashes on and off.• The phone does not respond when you

press P, and no lights go on.

Place the handset in the base so theCHARGING light goes on. The batteries willbe fully charged in 14 hours.

NOTE: The handset must lie flat in the base,with the keypad facing down, when charg-ing. The charging light in the base goes on ifthe handset is positioned correctly.

A fully charged battery maintains standbypower for up to 14 days when the HandsetRinger ON/OFF switch is set to ON, and upto 21 days when the Handset Ringer ON/OFFswitch is set to OFF.

If it’s more convenient for you, you can leavethe handset in the base all the time.It is impossible to overcharge the batteries.If you get a low battery indicator even afterthe batteries have been charged 14 hours, thebattery should be replaced.

Replacing the HandsetBattery Pack1 Remove the battery case cover on

the handset by pressing on theindentation and sliding the coverdownward.

2 Lift out the old battery pack andunplug it from the handset.

3 Hold the new battery pack and plugthe connector into the handset.Place the battery pack into the case, sothe wires rest above the battery pack.

4 Replace the cover by sliding it on itstrack up over the battery case until itsnaps firmly into place.

5 The new batteries must be chargedbefore using the phone. Place thehandset face down in the base andallow it to charge for 14 hours. Thetelephone might operate before that,but for best performance, let thehandset batteries charge fully.

• Place the handset in the base,and check to make sure theCHARGING light is on.Unplug the AC adapter from theoutlet, wait 15 seconds, then plugit in again. The CHARGING lightshould go on. Wait another 15seconds, then pick up the handsetand press P. The phoneshould operate properly. If it doesnot, try the next step.

• Pick up the handset, open thebattery compartment, and unplugthe battery pack. Wait 15seconds, then reinstall the batterypack, close the battery compartment, place the handset in thebase, and check to make sure theCHARGING light is on. Waitanother 15 seconds, then pick upthe handset and press P.The phone should operateproperly.

If you have no dial tone, check all the previ-ous suggestions. If you still do not hear a dialtone, disconnect the phone and try anotherphone in the same jack. If there is no dialtone on that phone either, the problem is prob-ably in your wiring or local service. Call yourlocal telephone service company.

If you hear noise or interference whenusing the phone• You may be out of range. Move closer

to the base.• Press and release C to change to

another of the 25 channels available. Ifthe noise is exceptionally loud, movecloser to the base before changingchannels.

• Household appliances plugged intothe same circuit as the base cansometimes cause interference. Trymoving the appliance or the base toanother outlet.

• The layout of your home or officemight be limiting the operating range.Try moving the base to anotherlocation, preferably on an upper floor.

• Make sure the base antenna is upright.• Disconnect the base from the tele-

phone jack and plug in a cordedtelephone. If you still hear noise orinterference, the problem is probablyin your wiring or local service. Callyour local telephone service company.

If the phone does not ring when you receivea call• Make sure the Handset Ringer ON/

OFF switch is set to ON.• Make sure the telephone line cord is

connected firmly to the base and thetelephone jack.

• Make sure the power cord is pluggedinto an outlet not controlled by a wallswitch.

• You might be too far from the base.Move closer to the base.

• You might have too many extensionphones on your telephone line to allowall of them to ring. Try unpluggingsome of the other phones.

• Press C to change toanother channel.

If your telephone misdials or you don’t hearthe other person right away• It might take a few seconds for your

handset to find a good connection tothe phone system. While it is searching, the PHONE light blinks rapidly.Do not start dialing until the PHONElight is on steadily.

• If you have dial pulse (rotary) service,you’ll need to set the dial mode to dialpulse. Press P, p, #, #,#, 3.

• If you have TONE service and youhear strange clicks while you aredialing, you’ll need to set the dialmode to touch tone. Press P,p, #,#, #, 8.

If the Message Light flashes rapidly• If the system does not play messages

when you press PLAY/STOP , checkthe cassette to see if it is broken orjammed. If so, replace the cassette,then press PLAY/STOP to reset thesystem.

If you have difficulty operating this phone,try the suggestions below. If you still havetrouble, call Lucent Technologies at1 800 222-3111.

If the phone does not work at all, checkthese items first• Make sure the power cord is plugged

into the base and an electrical outletnot controlled by a wall switch.

• Make sure the telephone line cord isplugged firmly into the base unitand the telephone jack.

• If the phone does not beep, or beepsfour times when you press P, thebatteries might need recharging.

• If the handset LOW BATTERY lightis flashing, the batteries needrecharging.

• Make sure the battery pack isinstalled correctly.

• If the battery pack will not charge,try cleaning the charge contacts withan eraser. If the battery pack willstill not charge, replace it withLucent Technologies ReplacementBattery 4051.

• If the above suggestions do not solvethe problem, try resetting thesecurity code (see next section).

If you hear a two-beep signal when youtry to use the handset• The handset and base are not

communicating properly. You mightbe out of range while attempting todial. Move closer to the base and trythe call again.

• If moving closer to the base doesnot help, the handset and basemight be set to different securitycodes.To reset the security code, trythe following:• Place the handset in the base,

and check to make sure theCHARGING light is on. Wait15 seconds, then pick up thehandset and press P. Thephone should operate properly.If it does not, try the next step.

If you have difficulty hearing messages• If messages are garbled, the recording

heads may be soiled and should becleaned.• Unplug the system from the

electrical outlet.• Remove the cassette tape.• Use any good tape deck

cleaning kit, and follow themanufacturer's instructions— OR —Rub the front face of the record-ing heads lightly with a soft,clean cotton swab moistenedslightly with isopropylalcohol.

• Use any cleaning fluidsparingly. If you spill fluid intothe interior, unplug power andline cords and let the system drythoroughly before using.

• Try sliding the Volume control on theside of the base upward to increasevolume.

If the recording tape sticks or malfunctions• Use only high-quality MC-30 or

MC-60 microcassette tapes.• If the tape has been used for an

extended period, it may be worn andshould be replaced.

If the system does not answer after thecorrect number of rings• If the Ring Select switch is set to TS,

the system answers after 4 rings whenyou have no new messages, and after2 rings when you have new messages.

• The system might be off, or the tapemight be full. In either of these cases,the system answers after 10 rings.

• The tape might be missing, broken, orincorrectly installed.

If the system does not respond to remotecommands• Make sure you are calling from a

touch tone telephone. If you hearclicks when you dial, the phone is nota touch tone phone.

• There might be noise or interferenceon the phone line you are using. Pressdial buttons firmly.

• Make sure you are entering yourRemote Access Code correctly.

• A power failure might have caused theRemote Access Code to revert to itsoriginal setting.

Making A Call1 Press P, and wait for the

PHONE light to go on steadily.2 When you hear a dial tone, dial the

number.

NOTE: You might experience a slight de-lay before you hear a dial tone, as theAutoSelect® feature searches for a clearchannel.

Answering a CallIf this phone is ringing and the handsetis in the base, lift the handset. The PHONElight goes on, and the call is connected.

NOTE: If the ringer switch is set to OFF,press P to answer the call.

• If the handset is out of the base,press P. The PHONE lightgoes on, and the call is connected.

• Although ringing stops when youanswer, you might not be able tohear the other party until thePHONE light goes on steadily.

Ending a CallTo end a call, place the handset into the baseor press P.

RedialThe last number dialed (up to 16 digits) onthis phone is stored in redial memory untilyou dial another number.

2 When you hear a dial tone, pressR.

Battery Saver ControlFeature/Ringer ON-OFFSet the switch on the side of the handset toOFF to prevent the handset from ringing.

When the ringer switch is set to OFF, thehandset stays ready to use for up to 21 daysin standby mode before you have to return it

to the base for recharging. You can still usethe handset to make a call or to answer a callif you hear an extension phone ringing.

When the ringer ON/OFF switch is set toON, the handset stays ready to use for up to14 days in standby mode.

Handset VolumeThe handset volume can be set to three dif-ferent levels. Each time you press V thelevel changes.

Temporary ToneNOTE: If you have touch tone service, you donot need to use the Temporary Tone feature.

If you have dial pulse (rotary) service, thisfeature allows you to enter codes or tonesneeded to operate answering machines, or touse electronic banking services, calling cards,and other special services. This feature willoperate most special services; however, someservices may actually require a touch toneline. To be sure, ask the company thatprovides the special service.

1 Dial the call, then press * (tone). Anydial buttons pressed after this sendtone signals.

2 After you hang up, the phone automatically returns to dial pulse (rotary)dialing

MuteMute allows you to hear your caller, but pre-vents the caller from hearing you.While on a call:• Press M. The MUTE light goes on.To deactivate the Mute feature :• Press M again. The MUTE light

goes off.

FlashPress F to activate custom-callingservices such as Call Waiting or 3-WayCalling. You may have to press otherbuttons before or after F as explainedin custom-calling instructions provided byyour local telephone service company.

This cordless phone can store 10 telephonenumbers that you can dial just by pressingp and one of the number buttons.Additionally, the 7610 offers a memory lo-cation accessed by pressing m.

Storing Speed-Dial Numbers1 Make sure the PHONE light is off.2 Press p.3 Enter the phone number (up to 16

digits).4 Press p.5 Press any number button from 0 to 9

for the memory location where thenumber is to be stored.

6 A three-part tone confirms that thenumber was stored properly. If youhear a long buzzing tone, or nothingat all, press P, then follow thesteps above to store the numberagain.

For example, to store 555-1234 inmemory location 9:Press p, 5, 5, 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, p, 9.

Storing a Number in M11 Make sure the PHONE light is OFF.2 Press p.3 Enter the phone number (up to 16

digits).4 Press p.5 m.

NOTE: You may choose to store emergencynumbers in the memory locations. Themanufacturer assumes no responsibility forcustomer reliance upon this memory feature.

Storing a PauseIn a Memory Dial NumberWhen storing a number in memory, pressand hold down the number button that comesbefore the pause, until you hear the secondbeep. This inserts a 1.5 second pause afterthat digit. If you hold the number buttondown longer, you will hear more beeps asadditional pauses are stored.

NOTE: Each pause you store is counted asa digit. You can store up to 16 digits in eachmemory location.

For example, to store 9, PAUSE,555-1234 in memory location 3:Press p, 9, (hold the 9for 2 seconds, until a second beep isheard.) Then press 5 5 5 1 2 3 4p 3.

Dialing Speed-Dial Numbers1 Press P.2 Press p.3 Press the number button (0-9) you

assigned to the number you’re calling.For example, to dial the numberstored in location 9, pressP, p, 9.

Dialing M11 Press P.2 Press m.

Storing Numbers Just DialedWhenever you make a telephone call, you canstore in memory the number you dialed. PressR instead of entering the telephonenumber when storing speed-dial numbers.

Replacing a Stored NumberYou can replace a stored number bystoring a new number in its place.

Memory GuardThe phone numbers you store in memoryare protected from loss when you changethe handset battery, or in the event of apower failure.

Directory LabelThere is a directory label that you can use tokeep a record of names or telephone num-bers of the numbers stored in memory loca-tions. You can place this label on the handsetor the base.

Access telephonesubscriber services.

This cordless telephone operates at themaximum power allowed by the FederalCommunications Commission (FCC).Even so, the handset and base can com-municate over only a certain distance —which can vary with the locations of thebase and handset, the weather, and theconstruction of your home or office.

When you make a call, if the handset is atto a point where the base and handset cannot communicate, the handset will soundtwo short beeps, indicating that you are outof range. Move closer to the base to re-store normal operation.

If you receive a call while you are out ofrange, the handset might not ring — or ifit does ring, the call might not connectwhen you press P. Move closer to thebase, then press P to answer the call.

If you move out of range during a phoneconversation, you will hear noise or inter-ference. To improve reception, move closerto the base.

If you move out of range while on a call,the phone will be left “off the hook.” Tohang up properly, walk back into range,periodically pressing P until thePHONE light goes off.

Changing ChannelsThis cordless telephone has an advanced25-channel AutoSelect® feature that mini-mizes the chance of interference. Everytime you answer or make a call, theAutoSelect feature searches for and selectsa clear channel.

In the unlikely event that you notice noiseor interference while using the handset:

1 Press C.2 If the interference does not clear,

continue to press C untilyou find a clear channel (your callwill not be interrupted — OR—Move closer to the base and pressC.

NOTE: You must be in range to changechannels.

Volume ControlUse the volume control on the side of thebase to adjust the answering systemvolume. Slide the control up toward theback of the base to increase volume whilelistening to your announcement ormessages, or down toward the bottom ofthe base to decrease volume.

Recording YourAnnouncementBefore using this answering system, youneed to record the announcement (up to 30seconds long) that callers will hear whenthe system answers a call. Yourannouncement should tell callers that theywill hear a series of beeps, or one long beep,before the system begins recording themessage.1 Prepare an announcement.

For example: Hello. I can’t come tothe phone right now. Please leaveyour name, telephone number, andshort message after you hear a seriesof beeps or one long beep. I willreturn your call as soon as I can.

To review your announcement — Pressand release A, located under themicrocassette cover.

Turning the SystemOn and OffPress and release ON/OFF located under themicrocassette cover. The PLAY/STOPlight is lit steadily or blinking slowly whenthe system is on, and is unlit when thesystem is off.

NOTE: If the PLAY/STOP light flashesrapidly, the tape might be missingor broken. Check the tape, then pressPLAY/STOP to reset the system.

Setting the ClockYou’ll need to set the clock so that it canrecord the day and time that each messageis received.1 Press and release g.2 Press and release C. You

will hear a day of the week.3 To change the day, hold down

FAST FWD or MEMO/REWIND until you hearthe correct day, then release the button.

4 Press and release C. Youwill hear an hour setting.

5 To change the hour, hold downFAST FWD or MEMO/REWIND until you hearthe correct hour, then release the button.

6 Press and release C. Youwill hear a minutes setting.

7 To change the minutes setting, holddown FAST FWD or MEMO/REWIND until youhear the correct minutes setting, thenrelease the button.

8 Press and release C. Youwill hear the day and time setting. Ifit is incorrect, start over at Step 1.

To review the day and time — Press andrelease C.

Ring SelectUse the Ring Select switch on the back sideof the base unit to select how many timesthe line will ring before the system answersa call. Set to 4 for four rings, or set to TSfor Toll Saver. When you set the system toTS, the system answers after 4 rings whenyou have no new messages, and after 2 ringswhen you have new messages.

Answering CallsWhen the system answers a call, the callerhears the announcement you recorded,followed by a single beep or a series ofbeeps. After the final beep, the systembegins recording your caller’s message.The system hangs up when the caller hangsup or is silent for 7 seconds or after themaximum message time of 4 minutes.

NOTE: If there are any messages recordedon the tape, the caller hears a series ofbeeps while the system goes to the end ofthe last recorded message. To reduce thenumber of beeps and the time it takes beforea caller can leave a message, listen to yourmessages frequently, and do not save alarge number of messages.

Bypassing theAnnouncementYou might wish to let certain callers knowthat they can leave a message withoutlistening to your announcement. Callerscan press # during the announcement andthen leave a message after the series of beeps.

Message LightThe light above PLAY/STOP indicates howmany messages you’ve received. The lightblinks once for each message, pauses, andblinks again. For example, if you have 5messages, the light blinks 5 times, pauses,then repeats.

Call Screening/InterceptSet the system to answer calls, and set the volumecontrol so you can hear the caller’s message.

If you decide to take the call, you can do sofrom the cordless handset or from anytelephone on the same line. The systemstops recording and resets to answer calls.If the answering system doesn't disconnectimmediately, press the F button on thecordless handset or flash the switchhookon another telephone.

When the Tape is FullWhen the tape is completely full, the systemcannot record a caller’s message. The systemanswers calls after 10 rings and beeps twice,but it does not play an outgoingannouncement or record the caller’s message.

When the tape is full, you can play all of themessages either locally or remotely and thenclear nessages — OR — you can turn thetape over to record on the other side— OR — you can change the microcassette.

NOTE: If you turn the tape over or changethe tape, be sure to follow all the directionsin the next section.

Changing the Microcassette1 Press and release ON/OFF to turn

the system off.2 Remove the old cassette.3 Turn the cassette over, or install

a new cassette.4 Press and release ON/OFF to turn

the system on.5 After the tape resets, record a

Listening to Your MessagesBefore listening to your messages, set themessage volume control so you can hearthe messages. When you press PLAY/STOP thesystem announces the number of messagesreceived. After each message, the systemannounces the day and time the messagewas received. After playing the lastmessage, the system announces “End ofmessages.”

Play messages — Press and releasePLAY/STOP .Clear messages — After you’veplayed your messages, the systemautomatically resets to record newmessages over the old ones. The oldmessages are not cleared until newones are recorded.Save message — Press and release

SAVE to save messages. The lightblinks to show that messages havebeen saved.Rewind — Hold downMEMO/REWIND while the system isplaying messages. The tape rewindsas long as you hold down the button.Fast forward — Hold downFAST FWD while the system is playingmessages. The tape fast forwards aslong as you hold down the button.Interrupt message playback —Press and release PLAY/STOP . Tocontinue playback, press and releasePLAY/STOP . (If you do not returnto playing messages within 60seconds, the system automaticallysaves all messages and resets toanswer calls.)Replay messages — Wait for thetape to reset, then press and releasePLAY/STOP .

Recording a MemoYou can record a memo to be stored as anincoming message. The memo will be

Remote Access CodeThe Remote Access Code is a 3-digit codewhich lets you access your 7610 answeringsystem away from your home or office. Thefactory setting is 123 (printed under themicrocassette lid on the base).You canchange this code to any 3-digit numberbetween 100 and 999, except 323 and 523.You can only change the Remote AccessCode remotely; you cannot change it at thebase.

Changing Your Remote Access Code1 Press 9, 9 after the two

beeps. The system beeps once.2 Enter your new 3-digit Remote

Access Code. The system beepstwice.

NOTE: A power failure may cause theRemote Access Code to return to its originalsetting.

Listening to Your Messages1 Dial your telephone number

from a touch tone phone.2 When the system answers, enter

your Remote Access Code. Thesystem announces the numberof messages received, thenbeeps twice. (If there are nomessages, the system announces"No messages.")

3 After the two beeps, wait 4seconds, and the system playsback messages— OR —Press and release 1 to playall of your messages (if thereare no messages, the systemannounces “End of messages”)— OR —Press and release 2 to playonly new messages (if there areno new messages, the systemannounces “No new messages.”)

4 To replay — Press and release1 after all messages have beenplayed.To rewind — Hold down 4 torewind. When you release 4,the tape resumes playing fromits new position.

To skip messages — Holddown 6 to fast forward. Whenyou release 6 the tape resumesplaying from its new position.

To clear messages — Press 3,3 after you hear the two-beepsignal. The tape rewinds andresets to record new messagesover the old ones.

To stop playback — Press andrelease 5. To resumeplayback, press and release 1.

Recording a NewAnnouncement

1 Press 7, * after the two beeps.You will hear a series of shortbeeps, then one long beep.

2 After the long beep, record yournew announcement..

3 When you finish, press andrelease 5. The system playsyour new announcement.

4 To review your newannouncement, press 7, 1after the two-beep signal.

Turning System OnWhen the system is off, it answers after10 rings and beeps twice.

1 Press and release 0 to turn thesystem on.

2 The system beeps twice toindicate the system is on. Toleave a message, press andrelease #. If you're not leavinga message, hang up.

Turning System OffPress 8, 8 after the two beeps.

When the Tape is FullWhen the tape is full, the system answersafter 10 rings and beeps twice.

1 Enter your Remote Access Codewithin 15 seconds after thebeeps to listen to messages.

2 Press 3, 3 after you listen tomessages to clear them andmake room for new messages.
