In order to understand changes in communities over time, students first have to understand the past, present, and future. After defining these terms, students label a timeline with events through history they would know. With their families they label a timeline with events from their own lives, and they then cut and paste pictures of the development of telephones and automobiles in the correct chronological order. Finally, they share their work with their peers, and reflect on the purpose of

timelines. (1 class period)
