Setting Up The VS3100 Prior to any VS3100 programming, ensure all the connections to power and the external transmitter (if applicable) are done properly. Refer to the installation section for more details.

Turning the VS3100 On/Off Once power has been supplied to the VS3100, turn the ON/OFF switch on the back of the system to the correct position.

Once the VS3100 boots up, the Power On LED should be lit green, while the System Status LED will be yellow and flash. If any LEDs other than those two stay lit on boot up, contact Visiplex Technical Support.

NOTE: Do not leave the VS3100 unplugged more than 14 days. This may result in losing all programmed data.

General Screen Information The VS3100 menu screens that require data entry are made up of a series of fields enclosed by brackets. The prompt for each field appears in the lower left corner of each screen.

To move the cursor: Use the “Enter” key to skip fields

To move between data fields: Once you have typed information into a data field, and the field is not completely full, enter it into the system by pressing the ENTER key. The blinking cursor then advances to the next data field.

If you need to delete or change data in a data field, use the DEL key to move backwards and then resume entering the data.

To return to the previous screen, press the ESC key.

The Paging Operator Menu The paging operator menu appears soon after the VS3100 is turned on. The menu, shown below, is used for sending a page to a pager (from the unit keyboard) that has already been set up via the Administration menu. Press the number key corresponding to the option you wish to select.

Sending A Test Page to A Pager Once a pager is programmed into the system, you can send a test page to the pager from the system keyboard.

1. From the Pager Operator Menu, select option 1. Send A Page

2. In the USER field, enter the three-digit pager ID previously programmed into the VS3100.

3. If the pager has been programmed correctly, the user name (if applicable) and pager type will show, and the cursor will drop into the message field.

4. Type a simple test message and press the ENTER key.

NOTE: If numeric the system will only allow a numeric message.

5. The red XMTR LED should go on and the system will have an internal click when the system is transmitting.

6. The pager the message was intended for should receive the message immediately after the XMTR ON LED goes out.

7. If the pager received the message cleanly, you may continue programming the remainder of your pagers into the database.

Sending Messages to Multiple Pagers Sending a Simultaneous Group Page

Each Visiplex pager is preprogrammed with an individual cap code, which is the seven-digit number on the back of each one, along with what is called a common cap code. The common cap code is the same in every pager and can be used to page every pager simultaneously.

To use the common cap code group page, program a pager as you would an individual pager as described on page 4, using the address 0800900 (for new pagers only).

When you send a test page to this pager ID, every pager should receive the page at the exact same time. This method of group paging is the most efficient way of sending out a page to multiple pagers.

Sending a Sequential Group Page In some cases a common cap code may not be applicable, or simply unknown. In this instance, a group pager can be set up in the VS3100 pager database. When you create a group pager in the pager database, you essentially are creating a mini-database within a database. The group pager in itself is a phantom pager, in other words, it doesn’t have an address (cap code). The group pager does nothing more than search the database for pagers within it’s own group designation.

To program a group pager into the VS3100 Pager Database:

1. From the Pager Operator Menu, select option 4. Administration

2. Enter the password DIAGSYS, and press Enter

3. From the Administration Menu, select option 1. Edit Pager Details

4. Enter the three-digit number you wish to be the group number.

5. NOTE: If a pager already exists for that number, press U to update details

6. Enter in a name for the group if desired, and press ENTER

7. Continue to press ENTER through the remaining fields until you reach the

The common cap code programmed inside each new pager is 0800900.

Configuring the Com Port of the VS3100 Often the VS3100 Desktop Paging System will be used in conjunction with an external device, such as a nurse call, fire alarm panel, or other devices capable of having an RS232 or ASCII output.

In order for the two to work together harmoniously, the two must be configured specifically for one another.

The VS3100 pager database must contain the three-digit ID the external device is referencing.

o For example, if the external source is referencing the number 100, a pager 100 must be programmed into the VS3100

The VS3100 com port must be configured with the same baud rate, parity, and protocol as the external device.

o If you are unsure of the protocol, baud rate, and parity of the external device, contact the manufacturer of the product, or refer to Appendix B of this manual for a common list of systems and settings.

External Antenna Mounting Instructions Transmitter Antenna Installation Guidelines

Indoor Antenna Installation Satisfactory results may be obtained on other locations such as an HVAC duct or metal

“I” beam as long as the radiator (the white nub) has space above and around it to transmit cleanly.

The antenna may be mounted upward or downward, NEVER horizontal.

When mounting any antenna, care should be taken when choosing the mounting location so as to provide an adequate ground plane and free space for the radiator.

If the radiator is mounted too close to metal, a high VSWR (Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) may occur. Long term, this can cause damage to the transmitter.

Outdoor Antenna Installation To achieve maximum performance for your outdoor antenna make sure to pick a location that is unobstructed by

trees, branches, power-lines, etc., never mount the antenna where there is a signal reflecting surface such as metal, power-lines, mirrored-glass, etc.

Make sure to pick a spot that is easily accessible in case you need to perform maintenance on the antenna.

For optimal performance, you must make sure the antenna you choose, in combination with the height of the antenna installation above ground, will provide sufficient clearance to allow your antenna to radiate without interference.

It is best mounting the antenna so the route of the antenna cable is straight and close to the VS3100 or external transmitter (if applicable).

The antenna may be mounted upward or downward, NEVER horizontal.

An optional wall mount bracket allows for the mounting of the antenna on the side of a building or other structure. This provides a convenient mounting location when the roof’s overhang is not excessive.
