Introduction to the Learning Object Repository (LOR)

SAFARI Montage is your district’s Learning Object Repository (LOR). Follow your district’s directions on how to login. Your username and password are likely the same as for other district applications. If not, your admin will provide credentials. LOR: A Learning Object Repository is a digital library that facilitates the storage, management and sharing of learning objects.

Metadata: Descriptive information about a learning object that helps other learn about its instruction use.

The Dashboard

Use the dashboard to access features of the Learning Object Repository (LOR) such as search, upload, and playlists. What is available on your dashboard may vary from other users based on your school or district configuration and your user type. Access to other integrated tools may also be available. Tip: Use the quick search bar at the top of the page to start a keyword search from anywhere in the LOR. Figure 1: SAFARI Montage Dashboard

Digital Learning Objects

Keyword Search

To find learning objects: 1. Click the ‘Search’ button on the dashboard 2. Enter a keyword 3. Click magnifying glass (hit ‘enter’ on keyboard)

Results display in tabs by media format and learning resource type. Browse across the tabs to view all results. Use search filters to refine results by publisher, grade range, and or copyright date. It is strongly recommended to keep a broad search grade range. Some learning objects are segmented and may include relevant content at the segment level for any grade range. SAFARI Montage will remember your last search. Click ‘Reset’ to clear all filters.

Title Page

To view a learning object in more detail, click on the title in search results to open the title page and view all details and options (including object level segments). The title page has a full descriptive summary and may include segments with descriptions. Each segment has a play button and other buttons for how you can use the segments. Find supplemental resources and citations under the player.

Searching by Standards

You can also search by standard. Content is correlated to the core academic areas (Math, Science, English Language Arts, Social Studies, Physical Education, Health and the Arts) using the most recently adopted state standards. Correlations are for the full title (video segments are not individually correlated). To search by standard:

This will take you to the search results page where you can filter and review results. To return, click the ‘Standards Results’ link below the advanced search filters.

1. Select ‘Standards’ in the navigation bar

2. Set the document type, set, and grade range

3. Search 4. Drill into a set to view

results 5. Click on the link to

Playing Content

SAFARI Montage Media Player

The SAFARI Montage Media Player (SMMP) has a variety of viewing modes including the embedded player and options to view in full screen or presentation mode. The servers on premises at your district ensure quality playback, so you can easily drag the scrub bar to fast-forward and rewind without buffering. Player Controls:

Change the video playback speed. (If available, captioning and language tracks are adjusted accordingly.)

Toggle Spanish and English tracks (when available).

Turn closed-captioning on and off (when available).

Open the full screen option. Click again to close full screen.

Integrated devices that are compatible with the SAFARI

Montage Media Player will display under the player controls. Click the button to activate the device in the player or to access the controls for the integrated device.

This button will open the media and the backchannel chat option.

Interactive Whiteboards

You can customize the interactive whiteboard option that displays under the player in your preferences. When playback has started, click on the whiteboard button under the player to open the title in full browser mode to use with your interactive whiteboard tools.

View & Chat

View & Chat provides teacher moderated backchannel chat alongside digital content for the entire class. Teachers can ask questions to engage student discussion and inquiry

while presenting videos. Start a View & Chat session from the player. Users can join from the dashboard button by entering the unique session code. Chat sessions will remain active as long as a teacher is participating. Only teachers can delete comments during a chat. Techers have access to transcripts from the View & Chat Manager button on the dashboard. Transcripts are exportable as a CSV file.

Create a Playlist

New Playlist

There are two main workflows to create a playlist. You can start by creating the playlist and then adding learning objects or you can start a playlist from a learning object and complete the playlist level information later.

To create the playlist first: 1. Start on the dashboard 2. Click the Playlist button 3. Click ‘New Playlist’ 4. Enter playlist level information.

This information is used to find the playlist in a keyword search.

5. Save To create a playlist from a learning object, start in search results:

1. Find a learning object 2. Click ‘Add to Playlist’ 3. Enter a title 4. Click ‘Add Here’ 5. Close confirmation

Note: In this workflow, the new playlist will become your active playlist and you will remain in search.

Add Learning Objects to a Playlist

Digital learning objects in the LOR can be added to playlists. When you find a learning object you want to add to a playlist, follow these steps:

1. Click the ‘add to playlist’ button

2. Select the playlist (if needed, browse folders on the left to locate a specific playlist)

3. Click ‘Add Here’ 4. Close confirmation

Note: Segments have their own add to playlist button so you can add a chapter or key concept. (Segments are on the title page for video and audio files.)

Adding a Bookmark

You can create a custom segment for video or audio known as a bookmark. The bookmark creates a custom start and end point for the object in the playlist. These custom start and stop times cannot be edited once added to the playlist so it is essential to preview your segment before adding it to a playlist. To create a bookmark:

1. Start playback 2. Locate the bookmark tool 3. Set a start point and end point (click link while viewing or type in a time

code) 4. Preview the segment and edit as necessary 5. Save to Playlist 6. Select a playlist from popup (as shown above) 7. Close confirmation

Active Playlist Link

Look for the active playlist link on the top right of most screens. The active playlist is typically the last playlist you opened or saved. Use this link to navigate to a playlist.

Adding a Slate to a Playlist

Slates are a visual cue used to communicate a transition, break, instructional shift, information, or directions in a playlist. SAFARI Montage provides a library of pre-created Slates. You can also upload your own. Slates are added to a playlist like any other learning object, and you will find them in the ‘Slates’ tab of search results. Search for the keyword slate and select the ‘Slates’ tab to browse some of the samples.

Adding Notes to Learning Objects in Playlists

Click the ‘Add Info’ button to add notes to learning objects in a playlist. You can also drag and drop items on the playlist into a specific order, copy, move, or remove items from the playlist. It can be helpful to toggle views when editing a playlist.

Sharing a Playlist

There are two types of playlists: My and District. My Playlists - managed by creator/co-editors. Teachers can share their playlists with other users in the same school. District Playlists - managed by an administrator. Teachers may have to submit their playlists to be published in order for users across the District to access their playlists. This is a district-level decision. Publication of a playlist creates a district-shared copy that is managed by the admin.

My Playlist

Only the creator (and admins) can view a playlist that is a “My Playlist.” Click on share to allow other users in the same school to view the playlist. Other users who can view the playlist can create a copy. Once shared, permissions can be adjusted to limit access if needed. Sharing and permissions for the learning objects on the playlist are managed separately.

Figure 28: Sharing in Classic View for a playlist

District Playlist

Teachers may be able to submit their playlists to create a published copy for the district. This may be subject to an approval queue. Unshared content on the playlist will be published with the playlist upon approval so all users can access all content.

1. Edit playlist 2. Select ‘District’ in sharing

dropdown 3. Optional: suggest a district folder 4. Save

If approval is required, the playlist will enter an approval queue. You won’t be able to edit the playlist, without removing it from the queue, until approval has occurred. Once approved, a copy will be made. The copy is managed by the district. You will still have access to your original playlist and can continue to modify it without impacting the district copy.
