Skin does not need to be exposed, body can be covered by clothes or a blanket. The ALT technology does not use or generate three- dimensional data related to any element of a scene. The ALT technology uses inexpensive computing and image capture devices such as Raspberry Pi single-board computer [1] and Pi NoIR camera [2] and is compatible with light emitting elements of many consumer electronics devices such as infrared emitters of standalone or embedded depth sensing devices like Microsoft Kinect and Intel RealSense cameras. An optical band pass filter which matches wavelengths of an ALT light source can be used with Pi NoIR camera to reduce effects of the ambient light variation. The next slide shows an example of heart rate and respiration rate data obtained using an ALT system consisting of a Raspberry Pi single- board computer, a Pi NoIR camera, and a Microsoft Kinect for Xbox 360. The ALT technology is well suited for monitoring heart rate, respiration, and general motion of sleeping persons. We will also explore other possible application areas for the ALT technology ranging from respiration and pulse gating for medical imaging, to ‘watchdog’-like applications for monitoring of people with epilepsy, to non-contact heart rate and respiration rate monitoring during yoga exercises, and beyond.
