Section II: SYSTEM DESCRIPTION OF ECWCS

A. GENERAL. The ECWCS is composed of 23 indivi-dual clothing, handwear, headwear and footwearitems which are used in various combinations to meetcold weather environmental requirements. AppendixA (pages 48 to 52) lists ECWCS component items inlayering order and identifies available sizes and theprescribed temperature range for each item. 0 -

B. CLOTHING ITEMS.

1. Undershirt, Cold Weather, Polypropylene andDrawers, Cold Weather, Polypropylene. The coldweather underwear, which consists of the under-shirt and drawers, are new ECWCS developmentitems.

a. Materials Used. The underwear is made ofknitted, brushed, multifilament polypropylene.

b. Concept of Use. The underwear layernext to the skin acts as a moisture wicking layer andserves to draw moisture away from the skin, trans-ferring it to the outer layers of the system.

c. Description of Item. The undershirt is abrown-colored turtleneck that has a center frontzipper which extends to the middle of the chest area.The zipper allows for ventilation at the neck andchest area. The drawers, also brown-colored, serveas a base layer to protect the lower extremities.

2. Shirt, Cold Weather, Polyester liberplle. Thecold weather shirt is a new ECWCS development item.

a. Materials Used. The material used for theshirt is a knitted, polyester fiberpile.

b. Concept at Use. The polyester fiberpileshirt serves as the primary insulating layer on theupper body.

a. Description of Item. The shirt is brown-colored, has reinforced shoulder and elbow patches,a convertible turtleneck collar, front zipper, elasticdrawcord waist, hook and pile cuff tabs, two chestcargo style pockets, and two lower handwarmerpockets.

3. Overall, Bib, Cold Weather, FIberpile. Thebib overqll is a new ECWCS development Item.

. Materials Uwed. The material used for thebib oversll is a knitted polyester fiberpile.

b. Concept of Use. The bib overall is used asan additional layer for temperatures below -25 0 F(-32 0 C) and down to -60OF (-510 C).

a. Description of Iteu. The overall is brown-colored, has elastic suspenders with quick releasebuckles, and full length zippers at the side seams.The quick release buckles are worn in front as shownon page 14.

4. Liner, Cold Weather, Trousers, Field andLiner, Cold Weather, Coat, Men's. The full closure,cold weather trouser liner and the coat liner arestandard items used in ECWCS.

a. Materials Used. The trouser and coatliners are quilted and made of polyester baiting andripstop nylon.

b. Concept of Use. The coat and trouserliners serve as an insulating layer for the ECWCS.

c. Description of Item. The standard coat andtrouser liners have been redesigned to make theseitems capable of being worn independently of theirrespective outer garment. Buttons and buttonholeshave been added to the coat front and the outseams ofthe trousers.

5. Trousers, Cold Weather, Field, Nylon andCotton. The olive green or the four color caihouflageprinted cold weather field trousers are standarditems used in ECWCS.

a. Materials Used. The trousers are made ofnylon, cotton, wind resistant fabric.

b. Ccncept of Use. The field trousers serveas a durable insulating layer to be worn over theliners when the outer extended cold weather trousershown on page 18 is not needed.

c. Description of Item. Characteristics of thefield trousers are side hanging pockets, hip pockets,

6. Parka, Extended Cold Weather, Camouflage.the extended cold weather camouflage parka is a newECWCS development item.

a. Material Used. The parka is a three layernylon and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) laminatematerial.

b. Concept of Use. The parka serves as partof the windproof, waterproof layer in the system.The PTFE in the garment has the property to repelwater while allowing perspiration to be expelled.

a. Description of Item. The parka has anintegral hood, two breast inside map pockets (whichcan be opened without unzipping the parka), twolarge lower cargo pockets, and a two-way, full-frontzipper to provide full face protection, leaving onlythe eyes uncovered. There is an elastic drawcord atthe hem, hook and pile closures at the wrist tabs,underarm ventilation, and a rank tab at center chest.

7. Trousers, Xxtended Cold Weather,Camouflage. The extended cold weather camouflagetrousers are a new ECWCS development item.

a. MateiMals Used. The trousers are alsowrade of three layer nylon and PTFR laminate material.

b. Concept at Use. The trousers serve aspart of the windproof, waterproof layer in thesystem.

a. Description of Item. The trousers haveseat and knee patches, pass-through pockets, andinserts in the seams of the leg openings to allow easydonning and doffing without removing the boots.

3. Pafta, Snow Cacuflage and Trousers, SnowCemaofa. The snow camouflage parka and trou-sers are standard items used in ECWCS.

a. Materials Used. The overwhite parka andtrousers are made of a cotton and nylon blend.

b. Concept of Use. The overwhite parka andtrousers are used as a camouflage outer layer in snowterrain and are not a substitute outer garment. It isworn over the ECWCS parka and trousers outfit.

o. Description ot Item. The hooded whiteparka has drawstrings for adjustment at the waistskirt and around the face. The trousers have -a waistdrawoord, side pockets, a hip pocket, knee pleats,and drawstrings at the ankles of the trouser liner.The parka and trousers, snow ,"mouflage, are to beworn together for a complete bot.j camouflage in snowterrain.

C. HANDWRAR. The ECWCS standard handwearitems are: glove inserts, gloves, mitten inserts,mitten shells (cold weather and snow camouflage),and mitten set.

1. Gloves, Iuseit. Cold Weather.

a. Materials Used. The glove inserts are madeof a blend of wool/nylon yarn.

b. Concept of Use. The glove insterts are tobe worni for added warmth with light duty gloves.

a. Description of Item. The olive drab gloveinserts can be wor'n on either hand. All parts of theglove, except the cuff, are seamless knit. The cuff isa true rib knit.

2. Gloves, Men's and Women's, Light Duty.

a. Usteriala Used. The gloves are made offuU grain, chrome tanned leather. The leather istreated with a water resistant compound.

b, Concept of Use. The gloves are used forlight work duty. They may be worn alone or, foradditional warmth in cold conditions, may be wornwith the cold weather glove inserts.

Gloves, Men's and Wormen's, Light Duty.

a. Description ot Urn. The gloves are black,slip-on style, all leather, with a buckle strap of blacktape on back of glove for wrist closure. The glovesare either a one-piece back and front or a two-pieceback design.

3. Mitten Inmertu, Cold Weather (Trigger Finger).

a. Materiels Used. The yarn is a wool andnylon blend.

b. Concept of Use. The mitten inserts areused as an Insulating layer under cold weather mittenshell shown on page 24.

a. Description of Item. The mitten inserts canbe worn on either hand and have aeparate sectionsfor the thumb and index finger.

4. Mitten Shells, Cold Weather (Trigger Finger).

a. Materials Used. The leather on the palm isdeerskin. The fabric on the back of hand, fingers,thumb, and front and back of mitten is wind-resis-tant, water-repellent cotton and nylon. The insula-ting material for the back of thumb, hand, and triggerfinger, down to the cuff of the mitten, is polyesterbatting.

b. Concept of Use. The trigger finger mittensare to be worn with or without the wool/nylon mitteninserts and in areas too cold for leather gloves andnot sufficiently cold for artic mittens.

a. Desaiption of Item. The color of theleather is saddle brown. The mittens are slip-onstyle with trigger finger. The mitten has an elasticwebbing and tape loop (for suspension cord) at thecuff opening and an adjustable wrist strap on theback o( the mitten shell. The back of the thumb,hand, and trigger finger down to the cuff of themitten is lined with insulation for added protection.

5. Mitten Set, Extreme Cold Weather.

a. Materials Used. Deerskin leather is usedon the palm side walls and front of thumb. The outerfabric for the mitten shell is a cotton and nylon wind-resistant, water-repellent sateen. The cloth outerpiece is a 100% wool knitted pile fabric. The insula-ting material is a polyester batting.

b. Concept of Use. The mitten set is wornover the wool mitten insert and trigger finger mittenshells to provide environmental protection to thehands in cold environments. The suspension harnessis worn over the camouflage parka. The cord isplaced around the neck and the strap is adjusted tolay on the chest to keep the cord in place. The endsof the cord are tied to the loop on the outer shell ofeach mitten. The outer shell of the mitten set can beseparated from the insulating liner for drying.

c. Description of Item. The mitten set con-sists of a shell with removable liner and a suspensionharness. The palm and front of thumb of the shell isleather. The remainder of the mitten is fabric. Theback of mitten shell includes a wool piie material usedfor warming the face. Two adjustable straps andbuckles are included at back of mitten. The liner isattached to the shell by four snaps. The harnessincludes a suspension piece (cord) and a breast piece(strap).

6. ltten Shells, Snow Camouflage, Cotton,White, Two Finger.

a. Matertas Used. The fabric used for thesnow camouflage mitten shells is a cotton and nylonblend.

b. Concept of Use The mitten shells are usedas the handwear camouflage cover when worn overthe mitten shells, cold weather, and mitten set,extreme cold weather, in snow environments.

a. Description of Item. The mitten ahellshave an adjustable strap on the back across the wristand an elastic take-up at the hem of the mittenopening. The thumb side has an opening for thetrigger finger.

D. HEADWIAR. There are two headwear items inthe ECWCS: the cap, combat, camouflage with ear-flaps and the balaclava (hood).

1. Cap. Camouflage Pattern.

a. Materials Used. The cap is a cotton andnylon blend. The earflap lining is made of wool andnylon flannel.

b. Concept of Use. The cap is intended foruse in field and garrison environments found in vari-ous climate zones.

a. Description of Item. The visor style caphas a circular top crown and retractable earflaps. Itis self-lined except for the flannel-lined earflaps.The cap has a woodland camouflage pattern and theearflap lining is olive green.

2. Hood. Combat Vehicle Crewman's (Balaclava).

a. Materials Used. The hood is made ofNOMEX" bi-ply knit, Pajama-Check NOMEX* lami-nated to PTFE film, and NOMEX" rib knit with doublecovered SPANDEX" yarn.

b. Concept of Use. The balaclava (hood) isintended to provide the soldier environmental protec-tion from cold and wind. It is worn with the parka,extended cold weather, and under the M-1 or PASGThelmet.

a. Description of Item. The balaclava (hood)is composed of a knit comfort layer worn closest to

the skin as well as a knit outer shell; sandwichedbetween these two layers is a wind barrier Insert.

There is a single face opening which will allow for eyeexposure only, while exposure of the total facial areacan be achieved by means of an elasticized adjustmentfeature. Neck protection is accomplished by anextending bib.

E. FOOTWEAR. The ECWCS footwear consists ofthree items: the cushion sole, wool socks, and theextreme cold weather boots (black and white).

1. Socks, Men's, Nylon, Cushion Sole, StretchType, OG-106.

a. Materials Used. The top of the sock is a

wool and cotton blend. The cushion heel and foot is awool, nylon, and cotton blend.

b. Concept of Use. The socks are to be worn,qith the cold weather boots (black and white).

c. Description of Item. The item is an olivegreen, knitted, seamless sock.

2. Boots, Cold Weather (Type I-Black).

a. Mat•slal Used. The boots are made ofrubber, latex, wool fleece, and nylon tricot.

b. Concept of Use. The boots are to be wornwith the ECWCS and provide protection against theenvironment down to-20°F (-29*C).

a. Description of Item. The black boot is,Rbout 11 inches (29 cm) in height and has six pairs ofeyelets. The insulation consists of two layers ofwool fleece sealed within an outer and inner layer ofrubber.

3. Boots, Extreme Cold Weather (Type ll-White).

a. Kateralas Used. The boots are made ofrubber, latex, wool fleece, and nylon tricot.

F. ACCESSORIES.

1. Suspenders, Trousers, M-1950.

a. Materials Used. The olive drab shoulderstraps and loops are made of cotton elastic webbing.The hook tabs are made of cotton webbing. The slidebuckles are made from corrosion-resistant steel orbrass. The hooks are made fron corrosion-resistantsteel or round brass wire. The ferrules (bushings)are formed from stainless steel or brass. The slidebuckles, hook, and ferrules have a black chemicalfinish.

b. Conept of Use. The suspenders are to beused with the trousers, extended cold weather,camouflage.

c. Description of Item. The olive drabsuspender straps are scissor-back style (cross overin the back). The suspenders have two slide bucklesand two hooks which attach to the Lrousers.

Section III: USE AND CARE OF ECWCS

YOU are responsible for keeping yourECWCS items in good serviceableccndition.

This is YOUR uniform. It will notcontinue to look its best unless it is keptclean, maintained in good repair, andstored properly. The ECWCS will protectyou only if YOU take care of it and wear itproperly.

Check the label to see If you have theright size. This is extremely important inorder to achieve maximum usersatisfaction using the layering principle.Refer to Appendix C, Size Chart, forappropriate size.

ECWCS Is Different

Follow the cleaning and care instructionscontained in this chapter and labelattached to the garments. Pay particularattention to cleaning instructions forkyers 1 and 4 (polypropylene underwearand parltal trousers, extended coldweather, camouflag3) as these items aremade of state-oa-the-art materials andrequire saldd'd care. Refcr to Chapter 2of FM 21-15, Care and Use of IndividualClothing and Equipment, for additionalgonerml care and maintenance instruc-t ion s.

A. DONNING AND DOFFING PROCEDURES.

1. Sequence. The ECWCS is an insulating systemoonsisting of the following five primary layers (includ-ing the overwhites, when necessary) and accessor-ies:

Layer 1 - Polypropylene undershirt anddrawers.

Layer 2 - Sib overall, cold weather shirtand trouser liner.

Layer 3 - Coat liner and field trousers.Layer 4 - Extended cold weather

camouflage parka and trousers.Layer 5 - Snow camouflage parka and

trousers (overwhites).Accessories - Handwear, headwear, footwear,

and suspenders.

Layers I through 4 should always be worn. The biboveralls In layer 2 are normally worn for tempera-tures below -25oF (-32 0 C). Layer 5 is worn whensnow camouflage is required. The white boots shouldonly be worn for temperatures below -20OF (-29 C).

2. Adjustments. The polypropylene underwearhas the ability to draw moisture away from the skinand transfer it to the outer layers of the system.Beginning with layer 1, add layers as the temperaturedrops. Layer 4 is the outer layer of the ECWCS whonwoodland camouflage is required. Layer 5 is the

outer layer of the ECWCS when snow camouflage isrequired. Layer 5 is not a substitute outer garment.but is worn over layer 4 only as a camouflage. Adjustlayers according to preference, metabolism, andweather conditions.

B. INSPECTION. Examine the ECWCS items regularlyfor tears, punctures, or damage to material.

Punctures on the outer layer will produce leaks andeventually ruin the material if not properlymaintained. Repairs should be made as soon aspossible.

C. STORAGE. When storing ECWCS clothing:

1. Make sure the clothing is clean.

2. Brush and air-dry clothing before storing so itdoes not mildew.

o Do not fold wet clothing.o Do not place wet clothing in a bag or pack.

3. When packing clothing, make sure it does notcome in contact with sharp objects that may causerips or tears.

D. ATTACHING RANK INSIGNIAS. Attach rank in-signia on the parka to the rank tab which Is providedat the center of the chest. Either the pin on or sewnon rank insignia may be used. Be careful not topuncture or snag the outer layer of material whenattaching rank insignia as punctures will produceleaks.

E. CLEANING.

1. General. Clean ECWCS clothing items regularlywhen in use. Dirty clothes wear out quickly becausedirt cuts textile fibers and retains moisture fromperspiration. Prior to laundering and drying, makesure all the drawcords are tied together, all zippersare zipped, and all snaps and hooks are fastened.Securing these items will result in a better launderedgarment.

2. Polypropylene Underwear. Polyester FiberpileShirt and Bib Overall.

a. Machine/Hand Laundering. Use delicate orgentle fabric wash cycle or by hand, using cold water(up to 85°F/290 C) and cold water laundry detergent.Rinse in clean oold water. NOTE: DO NOT USEBLEACH OR STARCH.

b. Drying. Tumble dry at lowest fabric cycle,delicate/gentle (do not exceed 90°F/32 0 C). Removeimmediately at end of drying. AVOID OVERDRYING.To drip dry, remove water and place on rust-proofhanger. NOTE: DO NOT PRESS.

3. Liners, Coat and Trousers.

a. Machine/Hand Laundering. After removingliner from coat or trousers, wash by machine or byhand in warm water with mild soap or detergent.Rinse thoroughly in clean warm water.

b. Drying. Drip dry or machine dry on lowheat setting as fabric may melt if contacted withheated surface. Remove immediately from dryer.NOTE: DO NOT DRY CLEAN.

4. Trousers, Cold Weather. Field.

a. Machine/Hand Laundering. By machine,use permanent press cycle. By hand, do not wringor twist. Wash in warm water using mild detergent.Rinse thoroughly in clean warm water. NOTE: DONOT USE BLEACH OR STARCH.

b. Drying. Tumble dry at low heat setting.DO NOT EXCEED 130OF/540C. Remove immediatelyfrom dryer. To drip dry, remove from water andplace on a rust-proof hanger.

5. Parka/Trousers, Extended Cold Weather,Camouflage.

a. Machine/Hand Laundering. Use wash andwear/permanent press fabric cycle or by hand, usingwarm water (90 0 F/320 C - 110°F/430 C) and mildpowder detergent. Rinse thoroughly in clean warmwater. NOTE: DO NOT USE BLEACH OR STARCH.

b. Drying. Tumble dry at low temperture(100 oF/380 C) and REMOVE IMMEDIATELY fromdryer. AVOID OVER-DRYING. To drip dry, removefrom water and place on a rust-proof hanger. NOTE:DO NOT PRESS.

6. Parka/Trousers. Snow Camouflage.

a. These items are intended for wear as anouter garment to provide camouflage in snow areas.If garment becomes soiled or stained, it is extremelyimportant that the items are cleaned immediately.

b. Spot clean and rinse as required. Forthorough cleaning and restoring of water repellency,return to laundry unit for machine washing inaccordance with established procedures.

T. Handwear.

a. Gloves. Insert, Cold Weather. Remove,separate, and dry the inserts as required. Dry itemsaway from flames or extreme heat.

b. Gloves, Men's and Women's Light Duty.The gloves are made of full leather and contain awater resistant compound. DO NOT EXPOSE GLOVESTO SOAPS, DETERGENTS. OR WETTING AGENTS.To clean gloves, wipe dirt off with a dry cloth.

c. Mitten Inserts and Shells. Remove insertsfrom shells. Lay items out flat to dry. Keep itemsaway from flames or extreme heat.

d. Mitten Set. Separate liner from shell anddry away from direct heat.

S. Headwear (Hood (Balaclava) and Cap. Camou-flage Pattern).

9. Footwear.

a. CAUTION: Do not apply any oil-basedpaint or solvent-based polish to any part of the bootsince paint or polish will cause the rubber todeteriorate.

b. Clean the boots by washing the outsidewith a mild detergent and rinsing with water.

10. Accessories.

a. Suspenders, Trousers. M-1950. Clean thesuspenders by hand washing the shoulder straps andloops with a mild detergent and rinsing with clean,warm water. Hang suspenders to drip dry at roomtemperature.

F. STAINISPOT REMOVAL.

1. Following instructions on container, use a pre-wash or spot remover directly on the stain or spot fol-lowed by a standard laundry cycle with powdereddetergent. NOTE: DO NOT DRY CLEAN.

2. Refer to Chapter 2 and Appendix D of FM 21-15, Care and Use of IndividuJ Clothing and Equip-ment, for additional instructions on stain/spotremoval.

G. WATER REPELLENCY. If the fourth layer(Parka/Trousers, Extended Cold Weather, Camou-flage) of ECWCS leaks and inspection has revealed norips or tears, wash garments in mild powdered deter-gent. Detergents used in cleaning affect water repel-lent qualities. DO NOT WASH GARMENTS IN LIQUIDDETERGENT. When liquid detergents are used, theyleave a chemical residue which actually reduces thewaterproof properties of the fabric.

To restore the water repellency of Parka/Trousers,Extended Cold Weather, Woodland Camouflage, occa-sionally steam garments with iron on steam settingbeing careful to hold the iron about 1/2 inch abovegarment. NOTE: DO NOT PRESS.

Section IV: REPAIR OF ECWCS

A. RIPS AND TEARS

1. Underwear. Bib Overall, Polyester Shirt,Uinera (Cost and Trousers), Parka/Trousers (Szk•wCamouflage). Balaclava, and Cap, Camouftage.

a. To mend a ripped seam, overlap the tweedges and sew with straight and small stitches.

b. To repair a tear, place the two edges onthe wrong side (or inside), and sew together.

c. To mend a frayed edge, turn the frayededge under and sew.

2. Parka/Trousers, Extended Cold Weather,

Camoufta .

a. Field expedient or temporary measures.

(1) Stitch. Loosely whipstitch the rip ortear, keeping the seam as flat as possible. Trim allthread ends.

(2) Field tape. Turn the garment insideout, keeping the rip or tear as flat as posaible. Cutthe appropriate size of tape to cover the rip or tear.Round the edges of the tape to reduce fraying. Placethe tape over the rip or tear and press firmly.

b. Permanent repai:a. More permanent repairmeasures invorve a seam tape patch and a cross-oversealer. Refer to TM 10-8400-201-23 for additionalrepair procedures involving the cross-over sealer.

3. All other items of ECWCS are considered non-repairable and should be turned in when unservice-able.

B. DRAWCORDS.

1. Drawcords are found on the followinggarments:

2. Replace missing or defective elastic drawcordsin lengths to match original. If barrel lock is broken,tie ends of drawcords into large knots until a newelastic or tape drawcord with barrel locks can heobtained from the organizational supply unit.

C. ZIPPERS. If the zipper works stiffly, rub a thincoating of wax or lead-pencil graphite on each side ofthe track and work zipper back and forth a fewtimes. The wax or graphite lubricates the zipper andallowis it to open and close more easily.

D. MAINTENANCE TURN IN. Turn in clothing tosupply points for exchange when:

1. Ripped or torn beyond Immediate repair.

2. Any snap fastener, zipper, or hook and pilefastener tape is torn, damaged, or will not hold.

3. Elastic webbing is torn or frayed beyondimmediate repair.

4. Clothing is so badly soiled that it cannot becleaned adequately.

5. Closures or snaps do not function properly.
