The Electronics Industry

Moisture is the worst thing that can affect electronics by damaging the way they function or lead to some irreversible glitches in electronic components. Moisture also leads to other prob-lems such as rust and accumulation of dust, which can affect the performance of any electronic items.

While the problem is serious, the solution is rather simple — placing a desiccant with your electronics and it will protect your products against moisture. There are some crucial electronic items, such as, semiconductors, circuit board and several other photo-electronic components that are vulnerable to moisture. Keeping electronic items away from humidity and moisture can help increase their life span. Use Desiccare’s Humidity Indicating Cards to accurately quan-tify relative humidity levels and help protect your products against moisture problems.

allowing the meat department to optimise their production.

ActiveTech™ Case Ready Packaging System is designed to stabilize product ap-pearance, color, minimize moisture loss and control microbiological growth. It uti-lizes familiar packaging such as Pactiv foam trays and meat department over-wrap and maintains an attractive appearance by preserving the meat bright red.

Here’s how it works: the meat is first packed traditionally, foam tray and plastic wrap. Then each package is placed in a special bag where the oxygen is replaced with a mixture of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. This inhibits microbial growth and extends the meats distribution life for up to 30 days for whole muscle, 21 days for ground. The ActiveTech™ process is now in place at many of the nations largest meat packers.

Silica Gel is a form of silica manufactured from sodium silicate and sul-furic acid. Like clay, silica gel is non-hazardous and is capable of adsorbing 40% of its weight in water vapor at 100% humidity. Silica gel has a porous molecular struc-ture that closely resembles a sponge and has the highest capacity of any commercial

desiccant for moisture absorption.

CARBON Although carbon does not absorb moisture, it is commonly packaged for use as an odor remover. Carbon can be blended with desiccants to provide protection against odor and moisture in the same package.

Indicating Silica Gel with similar adsorbing capacities as regular silica gel,it changes color to alert the user that the desiccant is reaching its adsorption capacity.

Desiccare sells a full line of bulk desiccant materials including clay, silica gel, indicating silica gel, molecular sieve and activated carbon. These raw materials are available in an assortment of grades and sizes. Othernon-standard desiccant materials are also available upon request.

Desiccants are a dehydrating agent which attracts moisture from the atmosphere. It absorbs and holds particles of water to itself.

Desiccant Materials

Montmorillonite Clay is a natural occurring ad-sorbent that will successfully regenerate for repeated use at very low temperatures without substantial deterioration or swelling. Clay is inexpensive and highly effective within normal temperature and relative humidity ranges.

MOISTURE

Molecular Sieve is a manufactured crystalline version of zeolite containing a net-work of uniform pores and empty cavities. Molecular Sieve is derived from sodium potassium or calcium alumina silicate. It is the most aggressive and expensive of the primary desiccants.

MOISTURE & ODORS

ODORS

Calcium Sulfate (CaSO4) is better known commercially as Drierite®, an inexpensive alternative available in suitable packaging forms. Calcium sulfate is created by the controlled dehydration of gypsum, acting as a general purpose desiccant, geared mainly toward laboratory use. The low cost of calcium sulfate must be weighed against its equally low adsorptive capacity, adsorbs only up to 10% of its weight in water vapor.

Moisture Problem? Use Protection!

Calcium Oxide is also known as Quick LimeIn comparison to other materials, it will adsorb a much greater amount of water at low relative humidity. It is effective in retaining moisture at high temperatures and it is relatively inexpensive as compared to many other desiccants.

How are desiccants best utilized? To be most effective desiccants should be used within a closed/sealed moisture barrier or a rigid sealed container. This allows the desiccant to absorb the trapped moisture vapor inside of the package. Products should be packaged in a manner that does not allow additional water vapor in the enclosed environment. Often a humidity indicator card is placed inside the package to show humidity levels and indicate when the desiccant needs to be replaced.

Determining Types and Quantities of Required Desiccant1. Identify the type of container or bag the product is packaged in2. Calculate the volume or area of the container3. Determine the amount of desiccant required using the “Desiccant Requirement Chart” (see chart on the opposite page)

4. Select the type of desiccant to fit the application based on one of the following: • Amount of moisture to be absorbed • Permeability of packaged material • Temperature and humidity • Rate of absorption required • Requires container shelf life • Shipping and storage conditions • Cost

Often customers will use more desiccant than is required as a safety measure. Desiccants provide low cost insurance.

Oxygen Absorber Requirement Chart

Oxygen Absorber Roll Form

Standard Packaging

Desiccants should be stored inside of an air tight container.

The container we use to ship desiccants satisfies this requirement.

Due to the moisture absorbent properties of desiccants, certain precautions should be taken:

1. Remove lid slowly to vent air

2. Do not open container for a period longer than is absolutely necessary for withdrawal

3. Reseal lid immediately after any withdrawalscc=mlTightly packed = less than 10% void air space in container. Loosely packed = 25% or more void air space in container.

Oxygen Absorber Requirement Charts

Oxygen constitutes 20% of the void airspace within a contained environment. All recommendations are based on average use during normal temperature and humidity conditions. If you have any questions regarding the proper use of our products, please consult Desiccare’s customer service department.
