USC Women’s Cross Country Team Looks ToTake Another Step Forward in 2005

The USC women’s cross country team is focused on becoming the first Trojan team to place in the top five at thePac-10 Cross Country Championships. Coach Tom Walsh will look to his top two runners, senior captain KateNeeper and junior Kristen Berglas, to lead the way. Neeper was out all last year with injuries, but in her sophomoreyear, she finished fifth in the 10,000m run at the Pac-10 Track and Field Championships. Berglas, whose bestdistances are 1500m and up, has improved each year.

The third through seventh slots for the Women of Troy will be a battle between sophomore Kristin Kovacich, juniorsVictoria Carter, Christina Eads and Treani Swain, freshman Megan Kelly and senior Laura Strachan. It will bethese slots that will be crucial spots to support Neeper and Berglas to add depth to the Trojan’s cross countrysquad.

Kovacich was a big surprise in her first season. She is an 800m runner with a wide range and she came throughlast year as a freshman. Eads made steady improvement in her first two years for USC, and with continuedimprovement, has a chance to crack the top five. Strachan, Swain and Carter all have the ability to be among thetop five runners on any given race day. The Trojans’ only true freshman Kelly should also contibute to the teamstrength.

This year USC will rely on “pack running” in order to be successful. “In running together, they can really pusheach other to achieve greater heights,” said coach Walsh. “The runners need to be consistent from week to weekand close the gap between the first and fifth runners.”

The Pac-10 overall is one of the top conferences in the country. This year the league could have as many as fiveschools in the top 25 in the nation. The competition will be strong, but USC’s runners appear ready to challengethemselves and grow as a team.

CROSS COUNTRY SCORING

Team Competition:A cross country team may consist of 12 runners, or more if otherwise agreed upon by theteams competing.

Team Scoring:All runners who finish a race shall be given an overall finish place. However, only the firstseven runners on any one team may be used in scoring places. An order for team-finishplacing is established by removing all runners behind the top seven finishers on eachteam. Those teams not finishing at least five runners likewise shall not be included in theorder of team finish.

The score shall be determined by totaling the points of the first five runners of each teamto finish. The team scoring the lower number of points shall be the winner. For example,a team with runners finishing 1, 5, 7,24, 39 for a total of 76 would defeat a team with runnersfinishing 2, 3, 4, 48, 52 for a total of 109.

Although the sixth and seventh runners of a team to finish do not score points toward theirteam’s total, their places, if better than those of any of the first five of an opposing team, serve to increase the team score of the opponents.

Ties in team scoring shall not be broken, except for advancement to the championshipfinals.
