INTRODUCTION:

• United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is the United States federal government agency primarily responsible for administering civilian foreign aid.

• It seeks to "extend a helping hand to those people overseas struggling to make a better life, recover from a disaster or striving to live in a free and democratic .”

The USAID was created in 1961; it is in charge of activities previously administered by the Technical Cooperation Mission (TCM). USAID has been supporting the Government of Nepal’s health more than 50 years.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES:

• Family planning • HIV/AIDS• Maternal , child and newborn health• Malaria eradication• Medical , nursing and health education• Water supply and sanitation• Control of communicable disease• Nutrition

Family Planning

• Since 1991, USAID has helped Nepal reduce its fertility rate by 20% and its child mortality rate by 40%.

• In 2005, USAID plans to provide $23.54 million to increase the voluntary used of Family Planning, improve maternal and Child Health.

HIV/AIDS

• USAID efforts to reduce HIV in Nepal began in 1993 and have since contributed extensively to the Government of Nepal’s national HIV response.

• USAID’s efforts have improved access to STIs.

Education

• USAID has trained over 26,000 ECED (Early Childhood Education Development) facilitators, 15000 school management committee members, more than 1000 resource persons responsible for providing technical support to ECED facilitators and school teachers and 15000 parents.
