Career Highlights: Clever was the fourth-youngest Eagles player to be capped at the age of 20 years August 23, 2003, against Argentina in the Pan-American Championship. Currently the Eagles’ captain, Clever has started 53 matches during his nine-year career. He has scored 11 tries for 55 points and has appeared in both the 2007 and 2011 Rugby World Cups. Clever has played for the Lions in Super Rugby, Old Mission Beach Athletic Club, and Japan’s Suntory Sungoliath and NTT Shining Arcs, his current club. He became the first American to play and score a try in the then-Super 14 for the Lions. Clever also made 24 tournament appearances for the Men’s Eagles Sevens from 2004-2009 and was a three-time Collegiate All-American at the University of Nevada, Reno.

MARIETTA, Ga. – The Men’s Eagles held two training sessions at Life University campus Tuesday in preparation of the second leg of the IRB Rugby World Cup 2015 Qualifier against Uruguay at Fifth Third Bank Stadium at Kennesaw State University March 29.

One of the focuses for the group was the scrum. In the 73rd minute of last Saturday’s first leg, following three failed scrummages, prop Nick Wallace was shown a yellow card, forcing Tolkin to substitute Kyle Sumsion for a needed front row player – Titi Lamositele. Uruguay had chosen to scrum instead of put the ball in open play or kick to touch, though Los Teros were already within 10 meters of the try line. Lamositele’s influence in the scrum was immediate, as the referee did not see reason to blow his whistle. Mike Petri’s last-stand tackle in the corner was not enough, however, as Uruguay scored.

The try resulted in a 27-27 tie with nearly five minutes remaining in the match, and Wallace’s yellow hindered the Eagles’ late surge to find a win.

Forwards Coach Justin Fitzpatrick was pleased, overall, with the Eagles’ scrums throughout the match, save for the “lack of concentration” in those few minutes.

“If you look at it statistically, for 60 minutes there we had parity in the scrums,” he said. “[Then we had] a bit of lack of concentration and we lost our way a little bit.

“Overall I was very happy with what we produced in scrum time with one or two scrums at key areas at key times that cost us. But when we look at the collective, there was good enough shape and we’ll just focus to make sure we keep that concentration through the full 80 minutes.”

The forward play in Montevideo resulted in one Eagles try and nearly another, as starting hooker Phil Thiel dotted down ahead of the first-half whistle and prop Eric Fry was relieved of an apparent try earlier in the match for an infraction. Uruguay’s only other try came from a counter-ruck at midfield and a strong run on the wing.

As for the backs, professionals Folau Niua and Chris Wyles combined for 17 of the Eagles’ 27 points with a try, two penalties and three conversions. The overseas players joined camp less than a week prior to the match at Estadio Charrua and needed game time to find their stride. Samu Manoa and Wyles scored tries eight minutes apart in the second half and Luke Hume was deemed to have stepped into touch on his run to the try zone to nullify a fourth try.

The draw was the third consecutive match the Eagles have scored three tries following November’s 25-23 win against Georgia in Tbilisi and 28-7 win against Russia at Saracens’ Allianz Park. The Eagles have only scored at least three tries in a match on home soil six times since a 91-0 drubbing of Barbados June 7, 2006, with the most recent instance coming in a 36-20 win against Georgia June 16, 2012. "In the second half we did more often what we wanted to do, and we did it efficiently." MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay – The Men’s Eagles scored three tries in the second half and held Uruguay with 14 men for the final 10 minutes to draw, 27-27, the first leg of the IRB Rugby World Cup 2015 at Estadio Charrua Saturday.

The first half was not the prettiest 40 minutes of rugby, as Uruguay kicked four penalties and could have had more. Folau Niua gave the Eagles the lead in the first two minutes with a penalty kick, but Felipe Berchesi replied for Uruguay.

Niua could have given the Eagles a second lead with a penalty kick attempt about 15 meters out, but his kick hit the post and Uruguay moved down the field on the attack. Eventually, Berchesi added his second penalty in three attempts to give Uruguay a 6-3 lead.

Niua kicked his second in the 28th minute before Berchesi again gave Los Teros the lead with a penalty. They extended the lead with a try in the 35th minute though it was reviewed. The try-scorer was thought to have been taken into touch by the Eagles, but he touched down before his leg went into touch. Berchesi’s conversion was from a tough angle but he managed to put the ball through the uprights for a 19-6 lead.

Uruguay withstood a few attacks from the Eagles close to the try line. Eric Fry finished off one attack with a dive over the line, but the referee penalized the Eagles for double movement. The Eagles recovered a few minutes later and Phil Thiel rewarded his front row mates with a try. Niua’s conversion was successful to bring the Eagles within six for a 19-13 halftime score.

Berchesi opened the second half with his fourth penalty to extend Uruguay’s lead to 22-13. The Eagles had a lineout at midfield in the 48th minute, which Hayden Smith won to get his team on the attack. Samu Manoa broke through the gain line and dashed to the try zone untouched to close the gap at 22-20 after Niua’s conversion.

The Eagles put in a few more drives and Niua fed Chris Wyles on the wing for the Saracens man to cut through the Uruguay defense for a third try. Niua again converted to give the Eagles a 27-22 second-half lead.

Luke Hume nearly added the Eagles’ fourth try four minutes later but was taken into touch as he dove over the try line in the corner.

Both teams traded lengthy spells of possession for the next 10 minutes, with Uruguay getting close in the 72nd minute. After a few scrums, Nick Wallace was sent to the sin bin for multiple infractions. Kyle Sumsion was replaced by Titi Lamositele as a front row replacement for the scrums, but the Eagles had to play the remainder of the match at 14 men.

Uruguay quickly moved the ball from the ensuing scrum and touched down in the corner. The referee asked for the try to be reviewed and the TMO confirmed the score. Berchesi could not replicate his tough-angled, first-half conversion, however. Instead of Uruguay taking a late lead, the match was leveled at 27-27.

The Eagles had the final opportunity to earn a win, but the referee signaled for full time while Hume had the ball.

An improved second-half performance gives the Eagles a good reference point headed into the second leg March 29 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium at Kennesaw State University.

“In the second half we did more often what we wanted to do, and we did it efficiently,” Head Coach Mike Tolkin said following the match. “First half also we have away a lot of penalties.

“We’ll look at the film and see where they were. Some of them were just poor decisions when people should stay out of it. Second half wasn’t as bad in terms of having bad penalties.”

Tolkin also said there were no injury troubles from the match.

The Eagles will have to win the second leg in Atlanta to qualify for the IRB Rugby World Cup 2015 England. With a loss, the Eagles will have to go through the Repechage playoff.

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay – The starting XV for the Men’s Eagles’ IRB Rugby World Cup 2015 Qualifier first leg against Uruguay has been selected by head coach Mike Tolkin. Kickoff between the two American squads is Saturday, March 22, at 3:00 P.M. ET.

Phil Thiel will start at hooker between looshead prop Olive Kilifi and tighthead prop Eric Fry. Kilifi earned his first two caps last fall during the Eagles’ November Tour and will make his first start Saturday. Tom Coolican, Titi Lamositele and Nick Wallace will provide front row cover from the bench.

Tim Maupin will make his third career start for the Eagles on the wing, as will Folau Niua at center. The newer players add youth to the Eagles, though Tolkin does not expect any one of them to be a step behind.

“They’re fitting in very well,” he said. “I think the important thing about those guys is most of them did two camps with us over three weeks. So they really got the system down, they’re playing with confidence, and they got some hard game time against Life University. So they’re right in with the system and the pros.”

Tolkin’s squad is not short of experience, however, as can be seen with Louis Stanfill wearing the No. 19 shirt on the bench.

“If Louis had to start we still feel confident in his ability as an impact player,” Tolkin said. “It just reflects the depth that we have now and the strength in our forward numbers.”

Todd Clever will captain the Eagles in his 55th appearance from the blindside flanker position alongside Scott LaValla at openside flanker. Hayden Smith returns to the team for the first time since his last appearance at the IRB Rugby World Cup 2011 at lock partnering Samu Manoa.

“Right now we’re really fortunate to have some size, power and athleticism in the second row,” Tolkin said. “I think the thing that really reflects that is that Tai Tuisamoa is not dressing for the game. He’s a fantastic impact player and we had to make a tough decision with him, but it reflects where we are.

“It was only a few months ago, going into November, we had injuries at locks and we were down to some thin numbers there. We’ve been very fortunate, so we’ll enjoy it while it’s here.”

Mike Petri gets the start at scrumhalf with Toby L’Estrange behind him at flyhalf. Cam Dolan will wear the No. eight jersey for the Eagles.

Andrew Suniula will play at center with Niua, while Blaine Scully will man Maupin’s opposite wing outside of Chris Wyles at fullback. Eleven of the Eagles’ starting XV are currently playing professionally overseas, while Lamositele and Luke Hume represent overseas professionals on the bench.

The Eagles have lost to Uruguay once in 12 matchups, back in 2002 in Montevideo. Since then, they have a plus-129 point differential against Los Teros in six wins, with the most recent being a two-leg series win ahead of the IRB Rugby World Cup 2011.

“I think we want to play a direct, simple game to start,” Tolkin said of the game plan against Uruguay. “In our last game together when we played Russia, we put ourselves in a lot of opportunities to put points on the board but we didn’t take advantage because we played a little bit loose.

“I think our concentration coming in is to play direct, to play good territorial rugby, and to put away the opportunities when we have them.”

HISTORYA student at the Rugby School in England, William Webb Ellis, was playing soccer in 1823 when he picked up the ball and ran down the field to score. From this point, the game of rugby was formed. Today rugby is played in over 100 countries.

RUGBY FIFTEENS VS. RUGBY SEVENSTraditional rugby consists of 15 players on each side. Rugby Sevens consists of seven play-ers per side and each half is seven minutes long. Rugby Sevens was recently added back into the Olympic Games for 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.

RUGBY RULES• Each team is allowed fifteen players on the field and each half is 40 minutes long.• Players may only pass the ball backwards or sideways and blocking is not allowed. • When a player is tackled, he or she must release the ball. Other players may then form a RUCK to try and win possession of the ball. • A TRY is worth five points and is awarded when a player touches the ball down on or in the opposing team’s TRY ZONE.• KICKING from hand is allowed at any time during the game. After a TRY is scored, the team also has a chance to register an additional two points with a CONVERSION KICK, which is taken at any point on the field of play in line with the point that the ball was grounded for the try, and parallel to the touch-lines.• Play only stops when there is an infringement or when the ball goes out of play.• Play can be restarted through a KICK, a SCRUM, a LINE-OUT or a QUICK TAP.

RUGBY TERMINOLOGYRUCK - Formed when at least one player from each side bind onto each other to contest the ball on the ground between them. Each side attempts to push the other off the ball or use their feet to hook it back towards their own side. Hands may not be used in a ruck.

TRY - When the ball is grounded over an opponent’s try line it is worth five points.

TRY-ZONE- Is the scoring area similar to an end zone in football. The ball must be touched on the ground to score a try

KICK - The ball can be kicked at any time during open play. There are three instances in which you can also kick for points: 1) After scoring a try the scoring team gets an attempt to kick the ball over the crossbar and through the posts of the rugby uprights. A CONVERSION KICK is worth two points. 2) If the opposition commits a penalty, a team can choose to drop-kick (drop the ball on the ground and kick it) at the goal, although this is rarer in Rugby Sevens than the 15-man game..

A PENALTY KICK is worth three points.3) During play, a team may also attempt to drop-kick the ball through the posts - a DROP-GOAL. This is worth three points.

PENALTY – Penalties can be awarded for many reasons in rugby. Some of the most common are: high tackle (tackle above shoulder height), not rolling away at a tackle or ruck (a player on the ground must not interfere with play), offside. A severe or cynical offence may result in a yellow card, at which time the player spends 10 minutes in the sin-bin and the team plays the ensuing period a player down. For very serious offences, the referee can issue a red card, which means the offending player is sent off for the remainder of the match.

SCRUM - Used to restart play after a minor infringement occurs (e.g. forward pass or knock-on). The scrum consists of eight of the 15 players from each side. These eight players bind together and come head to head with the players of the opposition. The ball is thrown into the middle of the scrum on the ground and the players work with their feet to hook the ball behind them, making it available to play. The ball is then collected by the scrum-half and passed out to the back line.

LINE-OUT - When the ball goes over either sideline play is restarted with a line-out. Two lines are formed by players from each teams. The ball is thrown between the lines. Teams can lift players to contest for the ball.

RUCK - Once a player is tackled to the ground, a ruck is formed when one or more players from each team close around the ball and contest the ball. The ball then emerges and play continues. Hands are not allowed in the ruck.

QUICK-TAP – A type of restart chosen by a team after a free-kick or penalty is awarded. Play is restarted when the ball leaves a player’s hand and is tapped by his/her foot.

In January 2012, USA Rugby began offering full-time training contracts to rugby sevens athletes. Currently 25 male and 18 female athletes live nearby the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California and train year-round under the guidance of the coaching staff. The development was unprecedented in American rugby as the 32 athletes are focusing full-time on increasing their competitive edge on the world stage, a nod to the future of sevens and the 2016 Olympic Games.

Despite this recent development, a majority of USA Rugby's national team players hold jobs and juggle their professional and rugby careers. These remarkable athletes exhibit the ethos and passion inherent in rugby, and make large sacrifices to represent and play for their country. The Men's and Women's senior national teams are referred to as the Eagles.
