How to bE A powErfUl witnESS

From Acts 1, we learned that the church was born and exists to witness Jesus Christ to the world. By God’s wondrous grace, we were created and called to be children of God and witnesses of the Lord Jesus.

We find our supreme purpose in life when we live as His witnesses. Do you want to be a witness of Jesus Christ? Do you want to be a powerful witness? Let’s learn from Apostle Paul how to be a powerful witness of Jesus.

Acts 19 is the highlight of God’s work through Apostle Paul. Ironically the greatest gospel work did not occur in a city like Berea where people were noble, but it occurred at Ephesus-a metropolis full of materialism, idolatry, and immorality. Interestingly the atmosphere of Ephesus reflected today’s post-modern culture. When Paul revisited Ephesus, there were 12 men who knew only the baptism of John. To them, Paul witnessed to Christ and baptized them in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then the Holy Spirit came upon them. (1-7) Paul was sensitive to the work of the Holy Spirit and depended on Him for his ministry. He entered the synagogue and argued with the Jews, but the Jews hardened their hearts. Then Paul prayed and changed his strategy. What was his new strategy? Look at verse 9b. “He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.” Paul focused on daily Bible study with the disciples. He believed that the word of the Lord is the Spirit and life (Jn 6:63). He experienced the life-giving and transforming power of the word in his own life and ministry through obedience. He obeyed the Lord to the point of risking his life as Jesus’ witness. The Holy Spirit empowered him to overcome all hardships.

To be a powerful witness, we should first have a firm conviction of the power in God’s word. This conviction comes from experiencing the truthfulness of God’s word through obedience. When we deny ourselves and simply obey his words, God never fails to manifest his power, love and faithfulness. Let me share what I experienced. When the Lord called me to be a shepherd, I decided to live by

His words in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” When I was a student missionary to the United States, a crisis came when my advisor demanded that I choose either doctoral candidacy or campus min-istry. In order to keep campus ministry, I resigned from my research assistant position. Then God opened a way to successfully finish my doctoral study under another professor. And God raised two American shepherds. One is Pastor Ron Ward who is now a senior pastor of Chicago UBF. Upon my return to Korea, I decided to become a B professor to be an A shepherd. God blessed my ministry and raised many shepherds and missionaries. God also made me an A professor by promoting me to the highest rank as professor ahead of my competitors. I know many of you have experienced the power, love and faithfulness of our God through obedience to his words.

With conviction of the power in God’s word, Apostle Paul prayerfully devoted himself to Bible study and mes-sages for two full years. When he had God’s word in his heart, he was full of the joy and power of the Holy Spirit in all circumstances and God worked mightily through his ministry. May God help us to experience the power in God’s word through obedience and devote ourselves to deep Bible study until we have the joy and power of the Holy Spirit.

Next, Paul focused on discipleship. During his earth-ly ministry, our Lord Jesus taught the crowd and focused on raising 12 disciples. Jesus’ strategy to evangelize the whole world was to raise disciples. So he commanded, “Go and make disciples of all nations.” God’s work con-tinues through the disciples, not through the crowd. No disciple, no future. So Paul welcomed everyone who came to Bible study, but focused on raising disciples. In Acts 20:19-31, he testifies to how he served the disciples, “I served the Lord with great humility and with tears and in the midst of severe testing by the plots of my Jewish opponents. You know that I have not hesitated to preach

anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house. I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus….Remem-ber that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.” First, Paul served the Lord. Paul did not serve his own dream or ambition. He served the Lord with great humility and with tears. He could humbly serve God’s flock of sheep when he remembered the grace of God. When he remembered the grace of God, he could thank God in tears in all trials. Second, Paul shepherded the disciples one-to-one. Each person is different from one another. Paul accepted each person as he/she was and served the person according to his/her specific need. He visited them house to house after his daily hard work to nourish and lead each soul to God through repentance. In love, he did not avoid touching their sin problem. In Galatians 4:19, Paul said, “My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you.” Paul did not lead people to himself but to Christ. His utmost purpose was that Christ be formed in them. This life-giving shep-herding was the secret of successful disciple-making in Ephesus.

The outcome of Paul’s ministry was amazing. The Christian community in Ephesus grew and many Bible

teachers and shepherds were raised. Missionaries went out to pioneer the seven churches in Asia Minor. Verse 10b says, “…so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord.” God confirmed the word through many miracles. Many confessed their hid-den sins. Many who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls and burned them publicly. In today’s terms, they

burned love books, porno videos and heavy metal CDs. Verse 20 concludes, “In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.” When we obey the word and devote ourselves to the ministry of the word, the Holy Spirit will manifest many miracles of transformation, healing and restoration.

Verse 21 reads, “After all this had hap-pened, Paul decided to go to Jerusalem, pass-ing through Macedonia and Achaia. ‘After I have been there,’ he said, ‘I must visit Rome

also.’” After experiencing the work of God in Ephesus, Paul was convinced that God’s great work is possible even in Rome through Bible study and disciple-making. With this conviction, he later taught the Bible in Rome as a prisoner. And God changed Rome into a Christian empire after 250 years.

We should not be discouraged by the realities and problems in life. The Lord promised, “And surely I am with you always to the very end of the age” (Mt 28:20). The Lord is with you. Let’s have faith in God and live as Jesus’

witnesses in obedi-ence to His com-mand. Let’s devote ourselves to Bible study and raising dis-ciples after the exam-ple of our Lord Jesus and the apostles. May God make the word of the Lord spread widely and grow in power through the UBF chapters in Africa. May God raise missionaries and shepherds for the 55 African counties.

AfricANorthen-Eastern African Regional Bible Conference By luke lim, Uganda

nortHErn-EAStErn africa region — UgANdA

Our conference was so blessed

with much prayer support from all co-workers around the world. All at-tendants felt the touch of the Holy Spirit through messages, life testi-monies, mission reports, praise and worship, special songs, and African dramas and skits. All programs during the conference communicated one theme very clearly: “You will be my witnesses!”

First, Messengers were the Living Witnesses of Jesus.

For the conference, we prayed with many topics, but to simplify, it was for all those attending to be the witness of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth! Especially, we prayed for all of us to learn this command not by head knowledge but by simple obedient faith. For this goal, all mes-sages were prayerfully arranged to orchestrate the theme: You will be my witness!

Dr. Joseph Chung served Isa 49:1-6 (open-ing message). His mes-sage was full of humor and spirit. He encour-aged us all to be the light for the Gentiles through this conference. When he sang the Ugandan anthem in the middle

of the message, all African leaders cheered him with long lengths of applause.

Johnson from South Sudan served Luke 9:18-27 (Main 1). Through deep meditation of the passage, he was deeply touched by the meaning of Christ, and he ful-ly accepted Jesus as his savior who saved him from his age-old hatred toward his father who abandoned him, his suffering from civil war, and extreme poverty.

Otieno from Kenya served Romans 6:1-13 (Morning devotion 1). He titled his message “by no means!” He answered the question, “What hinders us from being a genuine witness of Jesus?” by openly sharing how he repeated his hidden sinful life. He emphasized that we must overcome a name-only Christian

lifestyle in order to become a genu-ine witness of Christ.

Steven from Uganda served Acts 1:1-11 (Main 2). His message spoke clearly about Jesus’ dying will for us: “You will be my witness!” After success in marriage and in his self-supporting life, he used to sit back in his own comfort zone. He how-ever repented his desire of an easy-going lifestyle, and motivated all of us to renew Jesus’ world mission command deeply from within our hearts.

Julius from Uganda Kyambobo UBF served Luke 23:33-38, “Father, Forgive them!” (Morning devotion 2). He is the oldest shepherd in Afri-ca UBF. He is a very gentle and prob-lem-free shepherd. But we were all surprised that such a man had also suffered from fear of death caused

by a charm prescribed by a witch doctor when he was very young. The power of Jesus’ forgiveness on the cross enabled him to live a new life and turned him into a fruitful witness of Jesus on Kyambogo cam-pus.

Kevin from Kenya wrapped up the conference by serving Acts 14:1-28. His point was that in order to be a strong witness of Jesus in real life, we must go through two types of sufferings: physical and spiritual. He repented seeking for human recog-nition as a senior shepherd in Kenya UBF, and also looking for a com-fortable and trouble-free life after he settled with a beautiful wife, a son, and a government job. He chal-lenged us all to go out to be witness-es of Jesus by sharing his decision of faith to go as a UBF missionary to Ethiopia or Democratic Republic of Congo.

After the conference, a Korean delegate confessed that since the conference passages were so obvi-ous, he thought, the messages wouldn’t be much different from those of other international confer-ences. However, he was so touched by the power of the simple faith of all the African speakers. There was no deliberate theory; no wordplay in their messages. He just heard the simple word of God and Afri-can shepherd’s struggle of faith to obey it in practice. He promised that when he went back to Korea, he would teach the Bible not with an elaborate play of words, but with just simple words along with obedi-ence.

Second, African UBF Missionaries were All Witnesses of Jesus.

On the first day night, we had life-testimony sharing. Juma from Kenya shared how he suffered from

trying to shepherd many sheep that were just as bad of a sheep as he was to his shepherd. When he deter-mined to suffer for Christ caring for those sheep, he became fruitful. Angelo from South Sudan shared a heart-moving testimony. He suf-fered from paralysis in the left leg and epilepsy. But with resurrection faith he raised several key shepherds for Sudan UBF. When he was sent to Egypt for proper medical treat-ment, he was not overcome by fear but again witnessed Jesus to several Egyptian sheep. Out of physical difficulties, God used his martyr-dom faith to be the pillar of Sudan, South Sudan, and Egypt UBF minis-try. Lilian from Uganda also shared a heart-moving and encouraging testimony. She suffered from sev-eral miscarriages. But when she was challenged by the word of God to be a shepherdess for campus souls, she devoted her heart to feed sheep. Eventually, she was able to raise many disciples of Jesus overcoming those life challenges.

On the second night, we had a world mission night with three mis-sion reports. Dr. Moses Oyor shared his missionary life in Egypt. Padiet Deng shared the blessings and suf-ferings of being an African UBF staff shepherd pioneering South Sudan ministry. Moses Agaba of Uganda UBF shared his difficulties of a mis-sionary life pioneering Rwanda UBF alone. All attendants saw them as the Paul’s of the modern age. We all were challenged by African UBF missionaries to become witnesses of Jesus not only in our own coun-try, but also in other parts of Africa including the Northern parts of Africa, and eventually, to the ends of the earth!

Third, We Witnessed Jesus in African Music and Dance too!

Uganda and Sudan UBF pre-sented a unique cultural dance on African Night (evening of day 1). It demonstrated our African brothers’ passion, color, and energy to witness Jesus. Kenya UBF presented on the world mission night (evening of day 2) a well-woven drama entitled “The Witness” and a dynamic and color-ful “Witness Dance.” This decorated the climax of the conference. All attendance were greatly encouraged and empowered with witnessing spirit! Delegations from other coun-tries also participated partially in each country’s presentation, which incorporated the spirit of witness-ing Jesus in the African spirit. Some-one said, “If you really want to wit-ness the God of Africa and want to become a witness of Jesus for Africa, this is the place. Don’t just speak about it. Be here! Dance together, sing together, and laugh together!”

Thank God that he answered all of our prayer topics through the work of the Holy Spirit in every pro-gram during the conference! Thank God that most of our African lead-ers made a clear internal spiritual decision to overcome the desire for an easy-going life and instead go out to neighboring nations in Africa to witness Jesus there! May God raise many witnesses of Jesus to pioneer 55 countries in Africa!

One word: “To the ends of the earth!”

1. We saw god’s vision

There was Southern Africa Con-ference in Stoney Ridge Camp on August 10-12, 2012. The number of attendance was 260

including 29 from USA and 48 from Korea. The theme of the conference was “You will be my witnesses.”

1) The first dayIt started at 3.00 pm with the

opening message. Andries from Cape Town chapter delivered the message on Jeremiah 1:1-7. He was doubtful

about his calling because his min-istry did not grow well. He thought that he could not help black stu-dents because the culture is differ-ent. He thought that he did not have enough spiritual training or experi-ence. But by this word, he heard that God knew him even before he was formed in his mother’s womb. God told him that he should go wherever he indicates, not saying that I am only a child. We learned that we should go every nation that is not yet pioneered, because God knows us and is with us.

After eating supper, Desmond

from Wits UBF delivered on Genesis 2:4-25. He said that God made man for serving His mission. God also built family for carrying His mission. He emphasized that we must marry by faith, not by human appearance. He grew in a troubled family between his father and mother. He struggled to know the meaning of life. He planned to get a university degree and then get a job. When he got the job after having a degree, he was not happy. When he started studying the Bible with Missionary Jacob K, he found the meaning of life. He also

AfricArealized that he needed to marry by faith, so that his future family may live for God’s mission.

2) The second dayIn the early morning Abraham

V delivered a message on Matthew 6:33. Jesus told his disciples that they should seek His kingdom and righ-teousness first. When he was still a student in the university he met missionary James L and studied the Bible. When he sought God first he could graduate the university and got a job as the chief economist in the president’s office. When his house was robbed and the cost of living was raised, he became worry. But through writing this message he learned that he should seek God’s kingdom first. And he realized that to seek God’s kingdom first is the way to solve the problem of habitual worries in his life. He decides to live the life of seek-ing God first.

In the morning session, Oliver from Zimbabwe delivered a message on Mark 8:27-38. In the introduction of his message, he said that we must know who Jesus is in order to live as the witness of Jesus. Jesus is the Christ who settled the sins and death of mankind. People in Africa pursue many false christs such as material possessions, ancestor spirits, or com-munism. But Jesus is the only Christ who can save people from all prob-lems.

Oliver thought he was a good man, because he did not do any wick-ed things in his life. But in reality he did not love his wife and lived a dou-ble life. When he repented and con-fessed Jesus as his Christ, he knew he became Jesus’ disciple. Now he works in a private school 80 km away from the Bible center, but he attends Sun-day worship service and takes care of his fellowship. He is a good example

who lives by faith among brothers. When we know who Jesus is, we can witness him to others.

In the evening Boas delivered his message on Genesis 12:1-9. Abraham was old and childless. In people’s eyes he was a hopeless man. But God had hope in his life regardless of his human condition. God promised him to be a source of blessing to the world. Boas was not sure about Zam-bia UBF ministry, because many stu-dents came and then left after a while. But he realized, through the word, that God called him as a source of blessing in Zambia. He came to know that he must stand firm in God’s call-ing and obey the word of God. As he accepts God’s personal calling, and now hopes for God to bless Zambia and Africa through him.

That evening was mission night. We heard the testimony of mission-ary Peter B by video presentation. His company will send him to the Democratic Republic of Congo to do mine-related work. It will not easy for him to carry on the mission and his company work. But he accepted this as an answer of prayers to pio-neer 55 nations of Africa. Mission-ary Trueman L who is currently a missionary to Nigeria also gave us a video presentation. He will move to Ghana for pioneering with his family soon. It was not easy for him to live as a missionary in Nigeria, because he saw a dead body lying in front of his office a whole day, and because police stopped him on the road he missed his scheduled airplane. But he wants to go Ghana in obedience to be a wit-ness of Jesus.

Cremildo from Mozambique also presented his testimony. Pretoria UBF sent leaders to Mozambique a year ago for preaching the gospel on the university campus. Then they met Cremildo and studied the Bible. Since

then he attended a conferences in Pretoria twice. At those conferences he learned that God wanted him to live by faith. He lost his father when he was six months old. His grand-mother on his father’s side aban-doned his mother. He was thrown out into extreme poverty with his mother. He was sad about his life because he never saw his father’s face. But through the study of Genesis 12, he realized that God called him to be a blessing, and he accepted God as his father in his life. He was happy to find God as his own father after long suffering a fatherless life. He present-ly gathers his friends and studies the Bible with them. It shows the work of God started in Mozambique even though it is very tiny.

We had a campfire outside the hall. There were also countless twin-kling stars in the dark sky. It seemed the promise God made to Abraham, “so shall your offspring be” resounded in our ears again. We saw God’s vision that God will use us to be witnesses to 55 nations of Africa.

3) The third dayIn the early morning Blessed

from Zimbabwe delivered his mes-sage on Mark 1:35 about Jesus’ prayer at dawn. Jesus woke up early and prayed. Blessed serves a fellowship, but he could not help some members spiritually in the fellow-ship. He real-ized that he should pray to God early in the morn-ing, so that he would have wisdom and power from God. We learned

AfricAthat prayer is the power to be wit-nesses of Jesus.

As the second main message, Theo from Pretoria UBF delivered on Acts 1:1-11. Jesus taught his disciples that his resurrection was the rise of the kingdom of God. The disciples were stuck to the world seeking the kingdom of Israel. But Jesus knew that they needed to know the eter-nal life of the Christ and the eternal kingdom of God. It is the good news for all to know. This truth empow-ered them to preach the gospel to the ends of the earth. Theo decided to obey Jesus’ command to be a witness, and made a decision to go to Mozam-bique to establish a UBF ministry in Maputo within a year.

As the closing message, Dr. Abra-ham Kim delivered his message on Acts 19:8-22. He described how to become powerful witnesses. Accord-ing to the text, we must study the Bible diligently, just like Paul stud-ied the Bible in Tyrannus Hall for two years daily. The word of God is the Spirit and power of God. Jesus’ witnesses must study the Bible dili-gently. We saw God’s vision that the gospel will go to 55 nations of Africa through his witnesses, and we our-selves must be the witnesses of Jesus’ resurrection and his kingdom.

2. god’s work in each nation

1) ZimbabweWhen missionary James L pre-

pared the conference he found that many of his students did not have even records of birth in the local reg-istry office. It took three months to make passports. When he was wait-ing for the bus that was scheduled to go to the conference, they did not send the bus, breaking the contract. He looked for another bus with great stress. Eventually they found a bus and arrived at the conference ven-ue in South Africa taking about 24 hours.

God blessed his students abun-dantly through the conference, though Oliver renewed his heart as a disciple of Jesus after delivering his graceful and powerful message. Onward shared his life testimony. He studied diligently in poverty to be successful. When he received Jesus’ grace, he was changed to be in the life of service for others. Obet was admit-ted to the a university in the USA. But he could not go because he did not have airfare so he studied in med-ical college in Zimbabwe. Through the word of God, he decided to live as a Bible teacher on campus. Many stu-dents who attended this conference saw God’s vision, and made decisions to live as disciples of Jesus.

2) ZambiaNehemiah K was in the time of

transformation but he changed his long running job from a wig factory to a glasses business. He was busy pre-paring for it in Korea. As soon as he returned from Korea, he helped Boas to write his message. Andrew Phiri also wrote and shared his life testimo-ny at the conference. God renewed the heart of Boas and he is deter-mined to be the ancestor of faith and the source of blessing in Zambia.

3) BotswanaMissionary Timothy C struggled a

lot to bring his students to the confer-ence, because the campus was closed for nearly three months. In particular, the parents of Charity refused to give her passport, objecting to the travel to South Africa. But missionary Timo-thy regarded it as a spiritual battle, and continued praying for Charity to attend the conference. At the last minute Charity made a new pass-port and attended the conference. It was the evidence of God’s victory. God worked mightily in the hearts of Charity and Michael. Michael became bright and even delivered a message on Acts 1:1-11 on Sunday after return-ing from the conference. He decided to live as Jesus’ disciple and a one to one Bible teacher.

4) NamibiaAbraham V delivered a wonder-

ful message based on Matthew 6:33. It was a touching message, because he repented his worry, and made a deci-sion to live as a servant of God who seeks him first. He and his wife mis-sionary Betty are working, but they took a leave and participated in this conference. Thank God that they kept their faith whether or not there is visible fruit.

Opening Message: “Young Men Will See Vision” Acts 2:1-17 by Fato J

Fato works as a CPA in charge of an accounting department at Sam-sung, Lagos. His wife is a lawyer. In Nigeria the monthly salary of average college graduates is between $300 and $500. Yet, Fato offers $500 a month in order to support Abraham director of Unilag II. (Unilag I and II share the Bible center, but have separate Sun-day worship services.) He also made a special offering to cover expenses for this summer Bible conference. He met Jesus in 1992 receiving a vision for student campus evangelism.

Main Lecture I: “Jesus’ Power to Render New Life” Mark 1:40-2:17 by Joseph F (Yabatech)

Jesus forgives man of sins. He set the paralytic to walk again! Joseph was like a paralytic. His family was poor. But in 1998 during his fresh-man year he was fished. At that time he realized he was seeking a job, and

was no different than the beggar. Jesus called Levi, a money maker and made him into a man following Jesus--a disciple. Levi found hope in Jesus.

Afternoon Program: Testimony writing and sharing in groups

After dinner, evening hours began with an evening devotion message by Stephan E from Bonn Germany. “Bring God’s salvation (Isa-iah 49:1-7; Key 6)

Preceeded by the special song by Yabatec.

Without God’s vision we only see our problems. Then we are full of fear to take the next step. He was a young-est son with a severe fear problem. He was so afraid that he could not regis-ter on his fourth year law school pro-gram. At that time God sent a Bible teacher. After several years of long Bible studies, finally he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Then the sin burden was lifted. Then he was hired by a law firm. But soon he was laid off. He could have been looking for a job else where. But to serve the mission he decided to stay in Bonn and serve the Lord. Then God rehired him at the same law firm. Then he made a vow to the Lord to put the Lord’s mission

first. God blessed him with a higher pay, a blessed family and children. He now prays to be a light to the Gentiles in pioneering 1700 European College campuses.

Testimony Sharing:1. Anu: He is from a broken family.

His heart was broken for the loss of his fatherly support. He decid-ed to feed sheep by bringing his five loaves of bread and two fish especially his time. He shared a testimony shedding many tears.

2. Ronke R: she grew up under step mother. She lived a wild life. She was invited to a Bible study at UBF. She thought she was too sin-ful to be forgiven. But through the message of Jesus who came to call sinners, she opened her heart and accepted Jesus as her Lord. Now she feels unworthy to be called a servant. When she comes to Jesus, Jesus removes shame and guilt, making her worthy for his service. She decided to feed sheep who has the same kind of prob-lem as she had.

3. Abiola (LUTH): He wants to be a neurosurgeon teaching the Bible.

In the past he wanted to chase after money. He takes care of 10 stu-dents through one to one bible study. He is a senior working at the Quantity Survey Department of Univ. of Lagos.

After breakfast, there was a group Bible study on Mark 6:30-44, Key Verse 37, “You give them something to eat.”

U.S. team led the song in wor-ship before the message. LUTH praise team led a special song.

Abraham Vucekovich served the message. Who is Jesus? He is a shep-herd for the flock. Sheep are blind and vulnerable. Population in Lagos is 20 million. Chicago the third largest city has 3 million. He talked about cor-ruption. We are like a sheep lost. God wants to rescue us. In Jesus we are no longer lost. King David says the Lord is my shepherd. Through His word he reaches out for us. Jesus’ word, “You give them something to eat” is a chal-lenge for all Christians to follow Jesus’ example the call to live as a shepherd. Jesus asks the unqualified and the inadequate to give something to eat. How far will you go to love my sheep? His parents were poor so they could not buy nice shoes Abe wanted. One day Abe drew Nike sign on old shoes, and went to school wearing them. On his way it rained so the logo sign he drew disappeared. He came back home crying. Then his father took him to a shoes store and bought for

him most expensive shoes, Jordan’s Brand. When we love others limit-lessly Jesus does the miracle.

After dinner fellowship, LUTH fellowship served a drama followed by a special song.

Evening: Message by James W from UK “You Will See Jesus Coming Again” Mark 13:1-31; Key 26

English people are reserved. But Nigerians have a greatness. They are open. In London, things are orderly yet the number one cause of youth’s death is suicide. We need to preach the gospel as the first priority. Shep-herd Abraham said pioneering the Unilag II is a hard work but a blessed work.

Mission Reports:1. Truman L - Ghana Report: God

prepared him as a missionary to Nigeria through military train-ing. Samsung company dis-patched him to Ghana.

2. Congo - Peter B: He is already in Congo. During college he vowed saying, “God, if you let me work at a trading company, I will go out as a missionary.” God answered the prayer.

3. Tokyo Report by Daniel Jung. God blessed Japan ministry by granting a Bible center.

4. LUTH - James O: In the past he did not like rules. His mom was strict. Father forgive them. Through this he met Jesus. His dream was to be a surgeon. He was invited to UBF in 1999 by Monica. 2004 he married his wife and In 2005 he started pio-neering the medical school. He lost job and things grew hard. But through daily bread writing he did not run away from mis-sion. There was no bible center. 2010 they got a bible center and a flat next to the center. 4 broth-

ers have common life. He got a job and got promoted. He has a vision that through the medical students God would establish Nigeria as a kingdom of priests. He prays to raise 5 medical mis-sionaries by the year 2020.

5. Lagos II - Abraham O: Born in a muslim and pologamous family with three wife. His father mar-ried more wives. In high school he joined a christian school. He failed college exam twice and wanted to commit suicide. He went to mosque. He vowed if God allows him to get into Unilag, he would serve Jesus. He got in. His parents persecuted. One shep-herd invited him. 10 years ago he married Elizabeth. His fam-ily raised Aquila T a missionary to Washington DC. This feb. he started pioneering a new chapter based on Roman 1:17. They pray for 15 regular SWS attendance, 20 1:1’s, 4 faithful teachers.

6. Yabatech: It has 14,000 students. 1994 Andrew and Rebekah came to Nigeria. March 14, 2001 they pioneered. 1st house church between Sunkanmi and Rita in 2002. 2nd house church between Joseph and Ese. There is a third house church between duke and a sister and there are total 4 fellowships. Pray for 60 Sunday worship service attendants, 60 1:1’s and 4 native shepherds to get married.

7. Unilag I - Seun : He is the first bible student to attend the wor-ship. He built a house church with Daniel who is a lawyer. 1990 Peter P arrived. In 1994 Andrew in 1996 Timothy came. They established 7 families and five fellowships. They have a vision to conquer Western African with the gospel of Jesus. And they sup-

port pioneering chapters.

Sunday, August 19Morning Devotion: Why Have

You Forsaken Me? (Mark 15)Before Jonathan left Ukraine

for Lagos, his name was changed to “Lagos Jonathan”. At first he did not understand why God sent him to Lagos. Now he realizes that God sent him here as a Jesus’ witness. “Jesus died on a tree. What was it for? How should we decide to live on?” Asked Jonathan S.

Sin destroys life. It starts with a little thing. He suffered from mean-inglessness. So he spent time in computer games and drinking. But through Jesus on the cross he realized that his life is valuable. What is our response to his act of love? Romans 6 says, “Do not let sin rule over your body; rather offer yourself to God as instruments of righteousness.” We are people who declare Jesus’ majesty. As Heb 9:14 tells us, the blood of Christ cleanses our consciences.

After the group Bible study, we had a Sunday worship service.

Sunday: Message by Benedict, “You Will Be My Witnesses” (Acts 1:1-11; Key Verse 1:8)

Special Song by Unilag Praise Team.

Benedict finished a law school at the University of Lagos. He is now doing a military service still working at a chamber of commerce. A while ago he used to teach the bible to 14 students. It was too much for him. So he wanted to secretly run away from Lagos. But Missionary Peter P prayed that he would stay in Lagos and he obeyed. Then God blessed him to fin-ish his law study. In the past he want-ed to be the richest Ibo man (Ibo man is an east Nigerian tribe who worship money as their own god, so they stop at nothing to make money, even will-

ing to kill people for money). Then one day Victor E invited him to UBF. He became confrontational to Victor E. But Victor was stubborn. Then he gave excuses. Victor did not give up on him. Finally he was convinced. The Holy Spirit came to him and con-victed him that the nation is in need of witnesses. Now he commits him-self to the life as a Jesus’ witness.

Closing Message: P. Abraham Kim (Acts 19:8-22) “The Power of The Word of The Lord”

Korean UBF (Chongno UBF II) Singspiration Team offered a special song

“Do you want to be a fruitful witness of Jesus?” asked Dr. Abra-ham. Then listen to the Word of the Lord, said Dr. Abraham. While he was working on a doctoral study, there was much pressure on him. But he chose to seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness. Then God granted him a success in his doctoral study. God also helped him to raise up two spiritual leaders one of whom serves now as the senior pastor at the Chi-cago Head Office. The Lord also gave him victories in making disciples and sending out missionaries one of whom is here in Nigeria. Paul did not lead people to himself but to Christ, that Christ be formed in each person. This is the secret of successful disci-ple-making ministry. May God bless Nigeria UBF to raise disciples through life-giving shepherds and shepherd-esses.

P. Abraham Kim’s Announce-ment:

Thank God for blessing the West-ern Region African Conf. Thank all foreign delegates, all the messengers, testimony speakers, and music ser-vants. Three Korean staff who would be in Nigeria to receive internship training: Jun Yong (also known as John) Kim (from Chongno); Joshua

Chung from Inje Chapter; Jaesuk Kim (Sungdong Chapter). They will stay 4 months in Lagos and 2 months in Yabatech.

We are called to be holy, kingly priests. We need to believe and obey the Word of God, even one word, and pray to be a good shepherd, life-giv-ing shepherd. Pray to reach out to 55 nations, especially 12 western region African nations, praying for Ghana and Congo and campus pioneering work in Nigeria in Lagos and Abuja. Pray for S. S_dan, for Oyo M Malakal and Padet D in J_ba. Please pray for Bethesda Clinic in Uganda, for the healing of Rebekah Yoon who is in Korea. Pray for the conference in the Middle East which is from 20-22nd this weekend. Pray for the 2013 Inter-national Conference in Pennsylvania which is organized to serve two pur-poses: to encourage missionaries and leaders and empower young Ameri-cans to see the world mission vision. Pray for sending out missionaries to 140 unreached countries, of which 40 are in Africa. God bless Africa.

Missionary Peter Park came out and shared a direction: let us hold onto just one word: that is, Acts 1:8, holding onto the hope of the king-dom of God. Be determined to serve the Lord until the coming of Jesus. Shepherdess Bimbo (Yabatech) is going to go to Abujah and pioneer. She came to UBF in 1994. Through testimony writing and weekly fel-lowships, she could grow up as a dis-ciple of Jesus. She thanks God for the loving care of Andrew and Rebekah Kim family. She heard the message, “You give them something to give.” She prays for her husband to join the UBF ministry.

Benediction by Missionary Dan-iel Rhee.

europeBalkan European Summer Bible Conference By John Jung, romania

“But he answered, ‘You give them something to eat.’” Mark 6:37a

Thank God who blessed the sixth Balkan European Re-gional Summer Bible Confer-ence which was held in Sinaia,

Romania from August 17 to 19. Also, for two days, August 19 and 20, Dr. John Jun and Dr. Peter Chang served Balkan missionaries with Ephesians Bible study through a CME ministry (Continuing Missionary Education), in which we had a very precious time to renew and strengthen our identity as missionaries by learning the soteriol-ogy and ecclesiology of Christianity.

The theme of the conference was “You give them something to eat.” (Mk. 6:37a). A total of 66 people attended (16 from Bulgaria UBF, 13 from Greece UBF, 11 from Serbia UBF, 10 from Romania UBF, six from Macedonia UBF, and two from Tur-

key UBF and more). Among them 19 were Balkan native leaders and sheep.

The main lecture 1 was “Jesus who came to call sinners” (Mk. 2-1-17) served by Barnabas Kang from Mace-donia. The main lecture 2 was served by James from Turkey with the title, “Jesus who does not condemn” (Jn. 8:1-12). The main lecture 3 was “You give them something to eat” (Mk.6:30-44) served by George from Bulgaria. The closing message, “Send us workers to harvest” was delivered by Walter Nett, the European UBF director.

A summary of the work of God in this conference is:

Firstly, through the words of God, each one of all attendants new-ly made a decision to live as respon-sible spiritual leaders. Especially life

YoU givE tHEm SomE-tHing to EAt

testimony speakers and messengers made a decision to grow as shepherds for campus students and spiritual leaders for each country and to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

Secondly, this conference was full of prayer spirit for Balkan UBF to be a community of love.

Thirdly, this conference was sup-port for Turkey UBF mission. Actu-ally, M. James invited us to have the next Balkan regional conference in Turkey and we all accepted.

Prayer topics:1. To firmly establish an ancestry

man of faith in each Balkan country (Bulgaria UBF: George; Greece UBF: Stamatis; Romania UBF: Alex; Serbia UBF: Marian; and Macedonia UBF: Tony).

2. To establish more than one house church on each campus (167) in Balkan Europe by 2020.

3. For Balkan UBF to be used as Koinonia support for Arabic Muslim mission, especially for Turkey.

4. To pioneer unreached countries (Albania, Bosnia, Montenegro, Cyprus, and Moldova Republic).

“But he answered, ‘You give them something to eat.’” -Mark 6:37a

Thank God for blessing the Cen-tral Europe conference from July 20-23 in Slovakia with the theme, “To Gain Christ!” Eighty

missionaries, native students, and leaders came from Austria, Sweden, Germany, Czech, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Belarus, Egypt, USA, and Ko-rea. We could hear gracious, yet very powerful messages delivered by main messengers Ales Maca from Czech and Walter Nett and Stefan Elsholz from Germany, opening messenger Paul Jang from Slovakia, and closing messenger Andrew Kim from Hun-gary. In Ales Maca’s message we could learn that Jesus wants us to live deeper, fuller lives in him as fishers of men. P. Walter Nett delivered his message based on Matthew 16:13-30 through which everyone could confess like Pe-

ter, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Stefan Elsholz in his message challenged all the attendees to deny themselves and take up their own cross. The conference was truly wonderful, filled with the abundant words of God and the beautiful co-working of many servants.

On the second night, we could enjoy much music, dances, Scripture memorization, and other special per-formances by all the different chap-ters during “The Night of Central Europe” to celebrate and see God’s vision for Central Europe.

In order to support Central Euro-pean mission and this conference, Paul Kim came all the way from Chun-Chen, Korea with seven other leaders. We were moved by the spe-cial lecture he delivered on the topic

YoU ArE tHE cHriSt

of how to gain Christ based on Phi-lippians 3:8 and by his life testimony of how he personally gained Christ.

M. Paul Jang, the director of Slovakia UBF, works at the Korean embassy. Although he is a busy man, he makes the time to study the Bible with his boss, the Korean Counsel, whom he invited to the conference. His wife Esther is a powerful woman of God. She invited seven beautiful Slovak girls and two Slovak boys to the conference.Throughout the conference, we focused on three prayer topics: 1. for each Central European chap-

ter to raise one ancestor of faith like Abraham and one ancestor of faith like Sarah;

2. for General Director, P. Abraham Kim, and European Director, Walter Nett; and 3) for the three African regional conferences.

europeNorthern Europe European Summer Bible Conference By caleb lee, denmark

“Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” - Acts 2:38 ’”

From July 27 to 29, the northern Europe UBF Summer Bible Con-ference was held at Græsted, a beautiful beach of Denmark

in northern Europe. Thank God for blessing this conference with an abun-dance of His Word and the Holy Spirit.

In preparation for this confer-ence, we decided on the theme of “spiritual revival” because we real-ized that our missionaries and bible students absolutely need it. Two months before the conference, the missionaries in Denmark, Norway and Sweden had a united prayer meeting on “Skype” every week.

God gave us the main lecture one based on Luke 24, where the risen Jesus appeared to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, delivered by John Choo. Through this mes-

sage, we learned that we can recover our passion when we meet the risen Jesus again through the word of God. After the message, we shared about the grace of God who met and saved us in the most critical moment of despair through showing a life graph each person prepared.

The main lecture two was given by Joseph Jin on Acts 2, based on the message of repentance, baptism, and receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit. Through this message, we newly came to repent and could have a holy desire to live a life full of the Holy Spirit.

In the evening, Abraham K. Lee served the message of John 4, where Jesus saved a Samaritan woman. Through this message, we learned the importance of one person

changed. We could see a great vision of the work of God to be accom-plished in northern Europe through one ancestry man of faith. After-wards, there were gracious gradua-tion testimonies given by Abraham K. Lee who recently got a doctoral degree, Pauline Lee who graduated from a college of education, and Grace Choo Jr. who graduated from high school.

The main lecture three was delivered by Caleb Lee from Den-mark based on 2 Timothy 2, which talks about being a good soldier of Christ Jesus. Through this message we could make a clear decision of faith to willingly bear any kinds of small and big difficulties in the mis-sion field.

At every morning devotional, Rene from Köln, Germany graciously served the words of “Daily Bread” and we could start every day with thank-ful hearts, holding onto one word of God. Women missionaries made clear decisions of faith to sacrificially serve the work of God as missionar-ies and mission co-workers through deep group Bible study with Sarah Lee from Köln, Germany. Thank God that even the second gens had a good group Bible study that gave them a holy desire to have personal faith in Jesus and helped them to make a decision to be soldiers of Christ Jesus.

lAtin AMericA2012 Mexico City Easter Conference By sarah Hwang, mexico

We praise Jesus who took away our sins

and death and granted us new life and hope. We thank God for bless-ing our Easter Conference abundantly. It was held from April 5th to 8th at Teotihuacan Retreat Center, which is surrounded by a beautiful lake. 236 people attended ( 24 from Acatlan UBF, 10 from Cuautitlan, 34 from Iz-tacala, 8 from Morelia, 4 from Santo Thomas and 3 from Queretaro). 14 children had their own conference at the same conference site. In total, 250 attended the conference. The theme of the conference was ‘’Love Is…’’

A message on Genesis chapter 1

by M. Daniel Baik (Cuautitlan UBF) and another on Genesis chapter 3 by Shep. Alejandro L. laid the founda-tion for the faith in God’s creation and the primitive gospel. Life testi-monies by Ana Caren (Queretaro), Jorge (Iztacala), Erika (Iztacala) and David (C.U), Rosalba (CU) opened the hearts of our Bible students in the evening.

On the second day, Shep. Ale-jandro H. (Luke 15, 16), Shep. Fabian (John4) and Shep. Ricardo (Luke 15b) delivered heart-moving mes-sages. Especially, the message on John chapter 4 gave an amazing testimony on how our Lord Jesus restored the life of one miserable soul through loving conversations. Lucio, Jazmin, Melina and Adriana presented their symposiums on “Mere Christian-ity” (written by C.S. Lewis) M. Maria

Park guided them in their prepara-tions. During the intermission, we could also enjoy watching beautiful Mexican dance performance by our prayer mothers, the mothers of our growing leaders.

On the third day, Shep.Fermin (Mark 15), Shep. David L. from Izta-cala (John21), and Shep. Enrique from Acatlan (Mark 13) delivered very powerful messages. The message on John 21 demonstrated the love of the risen Lord Jesus, who takes care of all the mess we make and restores us to be shepherds of his flock. We also listened to the Bible testimonies by 8 new attendants. They confessed their wounds caused by poverty, lust, drug and broken families; they praised Jesus who healed them as they approached his cross just as they were.

cmE Continuing Missionary Education Ministry

After the graceful Balkan regional conference we had CME ministry with 17 missionaries for two days. We studied Ephesians 1:1-26, 2:1-10, 2:11-22, gracefully.

We received much grace through Ephesians 1:1-23. Though Apostle Paul suffered in the prison of Roman, he praised the God who has blessed us with spiritual bless-ings. We received the grace of adoption as his sons (4-6), his saving grace (7-10), and the grace of receiving the seal of the promise of the Holy Spirit (11-14). Paul was suffering in prison but praised God for spiritual blessings. We were Strengthened and encouraged by Paul’s faith.

Dr. Peter Chang presented the children education and I had discussion and we could visit the universities and had prayer meetings.

After Ephesians Bible study we prayed with following prayer topics for Balkan region:

1. We may renew the grace of Jesus on the cross and renew God’s calling as missionaries.

2. Pioneering Balkan regional campuses through one to one.

3. For the international conference 2013 in USA and for Walter Net and Pastor Abraham Kim.

Above all, through this con-ference all the missionaries deeply repented of their lack of devotion to the work of God. At the same time, they shared an earnest common prayer topic to raise up one ancestry

spiritual leader in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden through sacrificially serving their respective campus min-istries and being filled with the Holy Spirit.

I sincerely pray that God may

bless our prayers and devotion and raise up one ancestor of faith in each country of northern Europe.

cisoceAniAAsiAJakarta Summer Conference Report By peter kim, indonesia

Jesus’ voice “What about you? Who do you say I am?” (Mark 8:29) is still echoing in our ears even after we finished

the 2012 Jakarta UBF Summer Bible Conference.

We had a graceful and prayerful conference with the title, “Who do you say I am?” at a beautiful hotel, named Taman Teratai, which means “Lotus Garden.” We could see many beautiful lotus flowers here and there in the hotel. This hotel was not a huge luxurious building but a one story cozy building. This hotel was located in Puncak (peak of a moun-tain) which was about two hours drive from Jakarta, without traffic. We spent three nights four days from August 16-19. Unlike other areas of Indonesia, this place has fresh and cool air with mountain scenery sur-rounding the hotel.

Interestingly, this conference was like an international confer-ence. Although the total number of attendees were 26, we had Anthony who came to Indonesia as a short-term missionary from Philadelphia UBF in the US and Eileen, a special guest from Malaysia. Because of them, we had English group Bible

study, one English message, and four English life testimonies along with Indonesian translation.

On the first day, many of us arrived at the conference venue in the morning. Around noon, Isabella (Ukrida Univ, Medical Major) deliv-ered the opening message entitled “Put Out Into Deep Water” based on Luke 5:1-11. She has been a useful and faithful spiritual leader for five years in Jakarta UBF. She delivered the message gracefully with a calm and reasoning attitude to make the audi-ence think about the passage deeply.

After fellowship and rest time, in the evening, William K delivered an English message entitled, “I am Will-ing, Be Clean” based on Mark 1:40-45. Delivering the message with power point slides, he showed us the images of a helpless leper and Jesus’ touch. Through this, he revealed effectively the miserable condition of a leper and Jesus’ broken shepherd heart towards the man with leprosy. We all learned that each one of us is also a leper in a way because of sins and only Jesus would possibly welcome us and heal us and make us clean and holy.

After the evening message, we

all sat together to watch a movie. The title of the movie was “Tanah Air Beta (Indonesia, My Motherland)” This movie was a sad story about Indonesian history in East Timor. A protagonist was so sorrowful. She could not see her son because of the border line drawn by man. August 17 was Indonesian Independence day. Through watching this movie, many of us could have a chance to think about our Motherland that could not be abandoned and forgotten even if there is a border line out there. We also thought that the Kingdom of God is our ultimate Motherland regardless of earthly bound nation-alities that we are longing for whole heartedly.

On the second day, we awoke at 6 o’clock in the morning to have quiet time. Having Daily Bread, we meditated on the word of God and prayed to God personally. Then we had a simple breakfast followed by Group Bible Studies. We had three different groups of Bible studies: English, Indonesian, and Korean. Two Indonesian Group Bible stud-ies were led by Hengky and Carolus respectively. And William K led the English group Bible study. Peter K led the Korean group Bible study.

After the group Bible studies, we all gathered into the main lecture room to hear the main message #1. Before every message, Carolus and Eta served praise and worship. Again, they served the praise joyfully and spiritedly. After that, Carolus and Hengky performed a Duo drama. It was so hilarious. Sri (EU, Nutrients graduate) delivered “Jesus, the Water of Life,” and we learned Jesus’ humili-ty and persistence to helping one lost

wHo Do YoU SAY i Am?“ What about you? Who do you say I am?” -Mark 8:29-

sheep like the Samaritan woman. After the message, we had a joyful and thankful lunch time altogether. Later we had testimony writing time until the late afternoon.

In the evening, after we had a delicious dinner, we heard the eve-ning lecture delivered by Eta based on Luke 19:1-10. She dramati-cally described the luxuri-ous but lonesome life of Zacchaeus. We all had a time of laughter while we listened to her message. She testified of Jesus’ graceful heart that welcomed an ear-nest seeker regardless of his human conditions.

On the third day, again, many of us woke up early and listened to Peter K’s spe-cial lecture entitled “How to meet the Savior.” He gave us a few philosophical ques-tions about soteriology. He talked about three questions that God asked to Adam and that Jesus ques-tioned to his disciples such as “Where are you?”, “Who do you say I am?” and “Do you truly love me more than these?” Through this lecture, we have learned that we must know who we are first in order to person-ally meet the Savior.

The next morning, after break-fast, we studied the words of God through each Bible study group. Then, we listened to #2 main mes-sage delivered by Hengky. Because of a severe cold, he could not even talk until later in the morning of that day. We altogether prayed for the delivery of his message and health. Praise the Lord, he could deliver the message that he sincerely prepared during the last couple of weeks before the conference. The title of the message was “Jesus Crucified On The Cross” (Luke 23: 26-43). Before

the message, Susanti and Rubi per-formed a duo drama. Message deliv-ery and the performance of the duo drama all were done gracefully and wonderfully. Through the message, we realized how sinful we are. We thank God for Jesus who was cru-cified on the cross due to our sins.

Then, we had Cephas (IKJ, ceramic), Rubi (IKJ ceramic), and Susanti (EU, Nursing) read their semi-shepherd testimony about denying themselves to follow Jesus. They did not want to live a life as a shepherd like Jesus in their campuses, but decided to deny themselves. They made this decision because they were thankful for Jesus’ love. We pray that these young peo-ple may grow to become excellent Bible teachers on each campus.

After writing our individual tes-timonies all evening, we listened to a message delivered by Carolus enti-tled “Saul Who Became Paul” (1Timo-thy 1:12-17). Through preparing for the message, he had to rewrite his manuscript several times. However, he never gave up this chance to serve the work of God through delivering God’s words in SBC. Through this message, he testified that it was Jesus who called his name out of darkness to make him into a wonderful ser-vant of God’s word.

After this message, we heard a couple of beautiful life testimonies. One of the testimony sharers was Marie K who testified about God’s grace that helped her to overcome the hardships while receiving a Ph.D. She also made a firm decision to give her whole life to God for Indonesian

campus mission. We thank God and believe that God will use her life as His tool for Indonesian campus mission.

Another testimony sharer was Dream K. She has been going to Shippensburg UBF for college. She was thankful to God that she was born into a missionary family. The situ-ation in Indonesia to invite young people to the bible study is very difficult because the situation concerning reli-gions is very serious. Despite this fact, she has co-worked

with Jakarta UBF members and has been serving young people through music, dance, movie night, and game activities.

Eileen and Anthony also shared their life testimonies. Each of them shared their faith in Jesus and praise God concerning His endless grace. All the life testimony sharers spoke in English along with Indonesian translation which was a new work in Jakarta UBF that drives us to pray for them and world mission.

After the graceful life testimo-nies, we had a campfire. And in the night sky, there were so many fire-works displayed beautifully due to an Islamic celebration called Idul Fitri. On the other hand, we cel-ebrated God’s wonderful work of salvation that was shown among us through our 2012 SBC. Growing leaders and students all sang songs, played games, and took many pic-tures around the campfire. They

looked so happy. All missionaries had fellowship time together behind them listening to their laughter.

On the fourth day, it was Sunday. So after the group Bible study as the first program of the day, we had Sun-day worship service. Peter K deliv-ered the Sunday message entitled “Christian’s New Life Style” based on Mark 8: 31-38. He has worked so hard to prepare for this Summer Bible Conference overcoming past painful hard times due to a few brothers who have fallen into serious lustful sin. However, God comforted us through the messages and testimonies at the conference. Praise God for giving us joy and comfort through His word!

Among many, the last few testi-monies shared by three growing stu-dents made us so happy. The first tes-timony was read by Juni. He is sister Rubi’s brother who has grown into a sincere and faithful semi-bible teach-er in Jakarta UBF. Through his sister, Juni has been invited to 1-to-1 Bible study. He testified how his sister had been changed into a sincere grow-ing leader from a childish girl. He has been spiritually growing through 1:1

Bible study and through the service of Carolus’ family.

The second testimony was read by Brother Otis. He is a student majoring in Political Management in a Master’s course at EU University. He has been studying the Bible with Hengky during the last nine months. He has been badly influenced in the past by lustful brothers who have been rebellious in Jakarta ministry. However, he repented of his insin-cerity and lukewarm attitude which was like that of Pontius Pilate. We pray that he may continue to grow to be the ancestor of the EU campus ministry. The third was A, a M who has a single mother and a grudge toward his father who abandoned his family. He is a truth-seeker with many questions about his religion. He has persistently attended our Sunday worship service during the last six months. He is the third per-son studying the Bible who has an I background in our ministry after S and D. It has been very difficult for us to invite I students to our one to one Bible studies. We believe those three testimony sharers are the fruit

of this SBC. After they had shared their testimonies, we had the Lord’s Supper. After the Lord’s Supper that was led by M. Peter Kim, we had a delicious lunch and watched a slide show of all the pictures that we took during the conference.

We thank God for leading us to this beautiful conference site full of lotus flowers to have an abundant Banquet of God’s Word. We pray ear-nestly that God may help us to pio-neer seven campuses: Ukrida, Untar, Trisakti, Eu, Atmajaya, Ikj, and IPB and to raise one Abraham and Mary in each campus. Thank You.

Praise Je-sus who is the

Lord of resurrection and life. Praise God who gave His One and Only Son Jesus to die for our sins and raised him on the third day to give us new life. I pray that God may give His servants the living hope of resurrection and life. I especially pray that God may strengthen Sh. James Suh and Sh. Phil-lip Lee with the power and authority of the resurrection and continue to use them for His work.

Our Depok center held its Eas-ter Bible Conference from April 6th to 8th at the center. I praise God who worked powerfully through the messages. We had prayer meet-ings three times a week for a month to prepare for the conference. Four weeks before the conference, we studied the first message, Ezekiel 37, “Dry bones become the army of

God”, the second message, Ezekiel 47, “Everything will live” and the third message, “Young man, get up!” as the Sunday message. Through this, we received vision and hope for Indone-sian young people to be restored and be alive spiritually through the word of God. We held onto this prayer top-ic for the conference despite difficul-ties and God abundantly blessed our conference.

Missionary Joshua powerful-ly delivered the opening message based on 1Corinthians 15:3-4, “Jesus died and rose again according to the Scriptures.” The speaker and all the audience were moved by Jesus’ love and cried.

After having GBS fellowship by fellowship, missionary Joshua gave a message based on Daniel 1, “Dan-iel’s faith and decision.” Through his message, God’s love and faithfulness were clearly revealed to Daniel who

loved God and made a decision of faith. Missionary Joshua has been working as a professor at UPH (Uni-versity Pelita Harapan) and is pray-ing to begin a pioneering ministry in November. May God bless his deci-sion of faith and his pioneering min-istry at UPH.

On the second day, missionary Moses delivered a message based on Daniel 3, “Even if he does not.” People were moved by God’s faithful love that protected Daniel’s three friends in a blazing furnace and revealed His glory through a critical situation. God helped us to make a decision to live a life of faith like Daniel’s friends while in this idolatrous and corrupt world. After the message, we wrote testimony and had a Bible Quiz Competition. The students really enjoyed this competition, so we want to do this again next year.

On the third day, missionary John gave a powerful and spirited Sunday message based on Acts 3:1-10, “By the name of Jesus Christ of Naza-reth, walk.” We learned that although we don’t have gold or silver like Peter, we have the name of Jesus to spiritually challenge the paralyzed people.

While planning and praying for the confer-ence, I tried to help by

praying for leaders who had been losing their spirit due to job prob-lems, financial problems, marriage problems and future problems. God answered my prayers and restored the spirit of leaders and sheep through the conference. Thank and praise God. I pray that all of us may only worship God in this corrupt world and reveal the glory of God through our faith like Daniel and

his three friends. I pray that we may continually devote ourselves to 120 1:1s and 120 SWS attendants.

After the conference, we want to study John 6:22-59, “Do not work for food that spoils” as a special lecture and study Ecclesiastes, which we have studied from this year. We had studied for 7 weeks through Eccle-siastes 4 and now we want to finish this book before the Summer con-

ference in August. I pray that God may have mercy on me and grant me spirited messages from Ecclesiastes to empower me and our ministry.

“Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Acts 3:6

lAtin AMericAMidwest Region Fall Staff Conference By kevin albright, chicago, Us

The evident guidance, blessing and presence of God was upon our Midwest Region Fall Staff Conference at Milwaukee UBF

which took place Aug.31-Sep.1.The theme was “Like Good Sol-

diers of Christ Jesus” (2Ti 2:3). Mes-sages were served by Ron Ward (“Be Strong and Courageous,” Jos 1:9), Josh-ua Hong (“Fan Into Flame the Gift of God,” 2Ti 1:3-7), Bob Henkins (“Like Good Soldiers of Christ Jesus,” and Abraham Kim (“The Power of God’s Word,” Ac 19:1-22).

A special lecture on missional ecumenism titled “Living Out the Unity of Christ,” (Jn 17:20-24) was

given by John Armstrong of ACT3 and Wheaton College, a long-time friend and supporter of UBF. Con-ference reports were given by James Kim (South Africa), Kevin Jesmer (Uganda), Moses Timlin (Nigeria) and Teddy Hembekides (Middle East). Chapter reports were given by Sam Lee (UIUC), Augustine Suh (St.Louis), Rhoel Lomahan (West Loop), Bob Henkins (IIT), Abraham Zapata (Hyde Park), John Mike Pitts (Triton), Mark Vucekovich (Lincoln Park)and the following presiders, who also shared brief life testimonies: Jeff Cummings (Milwaukee), Jeremy Hajek (DuPage), Chuck Voght (Minneapolis). Mark

Vucekovich also gave a preparation report for our 2013 ISBC in Pennsyl-vania.

One new thing this time was that in place of workshops we had discussion groups with no presen-tations. Our aim was to make bet-ter bonds of fellowship and prayer with one another. May God bless all our Midwest chapters with the fruits of Christ-like character among us endure hardships joyfully as we please of Commander Jesus Christ. Personally, I repented my anger toward coworkers and resolved to live to please my Lord Jesus rather than myself.

“Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.“ 2Timothy 2:3

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” -Eph.4:3”

Thank and praise God for the power of the gospel which saved sinners like us who used to be slaves under the power of

sin and death and made us one in the Holy Spirit! The theme of the confer-ence was “Being one in Christ,” which was the will of God and what we all wanted. The conference was held at Zisikoba retreat center near Moscow. The total number of the attendants were 65 altogether, two from Kiev, two from Nizninovagrad, one from Anam II (S. Korea), and 60 from Moscow UBF. From June 4, we began to have a prayer meeting for preparation at 8:30 p.m. every night and all messengers and programs were determined two months before the conference.

During this conference we had

four lectures from Ephesians. Espe-cially, Maria Nikizina delivered the fourth message, which was very vic-torious based on Ephesians 6. In the message, she testified that she could not have any vision, but failed in the spiritual battle because one stu-dent, who had been studying the bible, left. However, she found out the secret of great victory which is nothing but only putting on the full armor of God.

On the second night, some mis-sionaries and native leaders had a research and survey about the secret of being one in Christ and sisters shared their life testimonies. Sister Larisa among them was fished in Tur-key and helped to accept Jesus Christ by M. Vladimir. She is such a passion-

ate woman of prayer that she gave up her scholarship and future secu-rity, even being expelled from the university and came to Kiev due to her faith. Brother Sergey also became like a new-born baby because of M. Maria Peace’s love. He was a man of sorrow because he was entrusted to an orphanage at one month of age. However, he is a very talented and gifted scholarship student who is now studying in the best university in Ukraine.

Through this summer confer-ence, God really showed his love and helped each one of us to repent our sins deeply from our hearts. One significant thing of this conference was that we all in each entrusted position bore our mission silently

and respectively and then God accomplished a unity among us in the Holy Spirit.

I pray that each of us may be well pre-pared both spiritually and physically to serve the freshmen coming in Sept. and have one new student to teach the bible.

cisoceAniAn. AMericAWest Coast UBF Summer Conference By isaac kim, la

Over the weekend of Aug 31 – Sep 2 the annual West Coast UBF Summer Bible Conference was held in

Twin Peaks, California, a 1.5 hour drive outside of Los Angeles. The title of the conference was “One Ap-proved” (2 Timothy 2:15). In total 126 people attended (8 from San Diego, 11 from Granada Hills, and the rest from Downey). As it has been the pattern now for the past 3 summer conferenc-es, the conference was designed and geared for those who already know Christ with the purpose of helping attendants to mature in the faith and as servants of our Lord. With this goal and prayer topic all 4 conference mes-sages and both of the 2 group Bible studies were based on 2 Timothy, al-lowing the entire letter to be covered thoroughly throughout the weekend.

On the first day after lunch and a brief session providing an over-view of the conference the first group Bible study was held covering 2 Timothy chapter 1. Message 1 enti-tled “Join with Me in Suffering by the Power of God” followed, served by Allan Cabudol. The main point served was that there are very real sufferings and very real difficulties

involved in living as a committed servant of God, some of which are our own weaknesses and some of which are “feeling” ashamed because of persecution that comes as we serve God. But Paul says that these are not good excuses “for God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline.” (v. 7) which we must fan into flames (v. 6). And Paul had confidence that there was nothing to be ashamed of in living as a servant of God and the gospel of Jesus, even though for him it meant being put in prison. With this faith Paul could ask Timothy to “Join with [him] in suffering for the gospel.” Allan made a similar resolu-tion to faithfully join other co-work-ers in the sufferings that come with outreach for students at his campus, CSULB.

After what was near-unani-mously considered to be a delicious dinner we had the entire evening to write and share testimonies (2 hours writing, 1 hour sharing). Most atten-dants appreciated having sufficient time to meditate on the word of the Lord.

Saturday morning began with Part 1 of 2 of a Daily Bread workshop,

lead by Jason Koch. This workshop touched on what daily bread is and the many reasons of “Why to do dai-ly bread”, using scripture to support. One of the highlighted points was that because of how mankind was created “man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” For this and other reasons there are more things hinging on whether we’ve had a steady diet of daily bread or not than we think.

After breakfast, the second group Bible study was held in the same groups, covering the remain-der of 2 Timothy, chapters 2-4. A full 2 hours was devoted to this study.

Afterward Andrew Cuevas delivered the main message, “One Approved” from 2 Timothy 2. The point of the message was to empha-size what it is for us workman to present ourselves to God as one approved. He said we must: 1) Endure hardship like a good soldier, 2) cor-rectly handle the word of truth and 3) cleanse ourselves of the ignoble things and evil desires of youth.

Andrew himself was convicted to cleanse himself of the ignoble thing of participating in a volley-

onE ApprovED“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” -2 Timothy 2:15

ball tournament at his workplace when he still had a lot of work to do to prepare for this message. He also saw that he needed to repent of avoiding hardship such as avoiding too much time spend for inviting students to the Bible study on cam-pus because of the hardship of rejec-tions. He decided to join a common life where a holy life is promoted, and finally to correctly handle the word of truth by going by exactly what the Bible says rather than what he would like it to say. This message was followed by lunch and then tes-timony writing for a full 2+ hours. Then a time of recreation including volleyball, swimming, and hiking. It was then time for another delicious dinner and then the evening pro-gram.

The evening program was kicked off with a report by Ellie Hopeman who went on a short-term mission trip to Nigeria UBF and Missionary Isaac Kim who paid visit to several African countries over the course of about a month this summer. Picture, videos, and other slides accompanied the report that revealed how the Lord is work-ing in these several UBF chapters in Africa as well as how the Lord blessed their trips.

A special session called “Bible study notes preparation workshop” followed. This consisted of Terry Lopez giving a discourse on how to approach the word of God in preparing Bible notes for ourselves and/or others. It also spoke of why approaching God’s word correctly is so important. 3 pre-selected pan-elists (Mark Park, Mari Lopez, and James Hopeman) who are respected as excellent students of the Bible each came to the podium in turn to share their approach to Bible study along with interesting tips and

advice, and a brief Q&A session.Greg Cocco then gave the eve-

ning message from chapter 3, enti-tled, “Continue in what you have learned”. He pointed out the fact that many don’t continue in what they learned because they are lov-ers of something else besides God. Many people will be like this in the last days. They will also have a form of godliness but deny its power. But Paul was a great example of one

who continued in what he learned and lived a godly life despite persecution. Paul reminded Timothy of the fact so as to encour-age him. We can continue too when we go to the scriptures that make us wise for salvation. It is these scrip-tures and the godly lives of servants of God like Paul that have power to bring people to God. Greg also made a decision to continue in what he learned from his passionate and zealous shepherd missionary Philip who always emphasized inviting students to one to one Bible study and doing daily bread. Greg admit-ted that after getting married and now having his first son he mostly just sought out a comfortable life while largely ignoring what he’d been taught.

The following morning part 2 of the daily bread workshop was held. This session focused on how to effectively do daily bread. It was pointed out that the whole point is to actually get God’s word in you just as you get food in you in order to nourish yourself and enjoy. Towards this goal some form of meditation on the word of God is necessary, more than just a quick read. Writing a summary and testi-mony to accompany was also rec-ommended with many scriptures to support that writing down scrip-tures helps the process of meditat-

ing on and digesting the Word. A strong encouragement was also giv-en to attend the Downey UBF daily bread meeting each morning at 5:30 am where a suitable environment for meditating is provided each day.

This was followed by breakfast, and the breakfast was followed by testimony sharing.

The final message was deliv-ered by Daniel Tourn from chap-ter 4, “Preach the Word”. His main point was simply that we must take the calling personally to preach the Word, especially in view of the judgment to come and the appear-ing of Jesus’ kingdom. And we must always be prepared whether in sea-son or out of season. Daniel could re-assess his view of life. He realized that he wasn’t living his life, espe-cially the calling to preach, in view of Jesus’ judgment and appearing but rather in view of many excuses about why he was too tired or too busy to preach. He also realized that he wasn’t relying on the strength of God to do so. So very practically he renewed his commitment to daily bread for God’s strength and the outreach and one to one Bible teaching ministry in order to regu-larly preach.

Many meaningful testimonies scattered were scattered through-out. West Coast USA co-workers give God thanks for having blessed the conference in growing approved workman of God by the power of His Word.

“We are living in a world of so many bro-ken relationships. Husbands and wives, parents and children, cultures and races, genders and generations – and even institutions – often fall apart from within. The root of this is man’s sin problem, his broken relationship with God. The world offers many solu-tions to this problem, but Paul says that these are all false gospels. There is only one solution: reconciliation with God. Only the true gospel of Jesus can bring about true reconciliation.” —The Purpose of the Study

Where is Your Heart? Our God looks at the heart. In Genesis 6, when God saw that every inclination of the thoughts of men’s hearts was only evil all the time, he was grieved and his heart was filled with pain. When Samuel anointed David king, God told him, “The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (1 Sa 16:7b). ... Acts says that David was a man whose top priority was to obey God: “He will do everything I want him to do” (Ac 13:22). ... God is seeking men and women whose hearts are fully committed to him. May he call us and use us in his great task of extending God’s kingdom until Jesus comes.

When we began pioneering Seoul campuses, we found the need to encourage students to have a personal faith and a personal walk with Jesus. This meant that each of us should have a personal time of Bible reading and prayer on a daily basis. Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Lk 9:23b). We needed a daily study guide to encourage personal, daily Bible study.

We wanted to study the Bible in such a way that we could let the Bible speak to us. And we wanted to cover all 66 books of the Bible. … So, Dr. Samuel Lee began writing Daily Bread notes in 1968. …[In 1975 we came to the US and] because we needed Daily Bread in English, I began writing. I wrote until the mid-nineties and finished the whole Bible twice. This book is a compilation of my Daily Bread notes from 1977 through about 2000. It was compiled as a kind of reference book to help in studying the whole Bible, book by book.
