President Donald Trump warned “Rocket Man”

Kim Jong-Un is on a “suicide mission” and threatened to “totally destroy” North Korea if it targets the United States or its allies, in a bellicose maiden address to the UN yesterday.

Appearing for the first time before the 193-member organization that emerged from the ashes of World War II, Trump boasted of

America’s military strength, signalled he was ready to rip up a nuclear accord with the “murderous regime” in Tehran, and berated US foes in Pyongyang, Venezuela, Syria and Cuba.

“The United States has great strength and patience,” Trump said -- as he followed in the footsteps of US presidents from Harry Truman to Barack Obama - “but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to

totally destroy North Korea,” he warned. “Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime,” he said, using his new nickname for the North Korean leader. “The United States is ready, willing and able, but hopefully this will not be necessary.”

In a veiled criticism of China and Russia, who were barely mentioned in the rest of the speech, Trump said any trade with North Korea was morally questionable. Trump

pilloried Iran as a corrupt “rogue state” and threatened to rip up the landmark international deal struck in 2015 to curb Tehran’s nuclear program. “Frankly, that deal is an embarrassment to the US, and I don’t think you’ve heard the last of it,” Trump told the UN General Assembly.

“Believe me. It is time for the entire world to join us in demanding that Iran’s government end its pursuit of death and destruction.”

But, the US leader added, the greatest threat to the Tehran regime was not the American military, but the Iranian people who want change.

The packed hall greeted Trump’s tough rhetoric and calls for individual nation states -- rather than supranational bodies -- to form the basis of the global order with periods of silence punctuated by polite applause during his 42 minutes remarks. - AFP

Dr. Nada Al Yousuf, O p h t h a l m o l o g y

and LASIK Consultant at the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Medical City University Medical Centre, confirmed that dry eye has become a widespread health issue, while warning against the serious complications which may affect vision due to changes in the quality of life and the frequent usage of smart devices.

“Tears are crucial for eye health and safety, providing moisture for the eye’s surface cells. Dry eyes may be associated with serious complications that may affect vision, such as bacterial infections and ulcers of the cornea, as tears are rich in antibacterial and antiviral substances that protect against infections,” she said.  Dr Al Yousuf also cautioned against the excessive use of contact lenses and recommended cortisone drops.

“The symptoms of dry eye include stinging and burning sensations, a feeling of a foreign body in the eye, blurriness in vision, a feeling

of heaviness in the eyelids, tiredness and fatigue, especially after long periods of reading or excessive usage of electronic devices, usually followed by the desire to rub the eyes and increase the secretion of tears after periods of dryness,” she explained.

Al Yousuf attributed dry eyes to lack of tear secretion by the tear glands due to ageing or the ingestion of some drugs such as anti-histamines, decongestants and antidepressants, in addition to medications for Parkinson’s disease, high blood pressure, some acne treatment, as well as contraceptives and therapeutic hormones.

Some autoimmune diseases, most prominently rheumatoid arthritis, may be accompanied by dry eyes as well as dry mouth, also thyroid diseases, vitamin A deficiency, and LASIK eye correction surgery. Research shows that nearly half of the patients undergoing laser vision correction have a degree of eye dryness after surgery.

The cause of dry eye is

the lack of adhesion of tears to the surface of the eye due to shortage of the mucous layer, and consequent evaporation of tears from the surface of the eye. This results in imbalance in the rate of tear production and tear evaporation, with rapid tear evaporation in cases of exposure to dry air, smoke, extreme wind, or   lack of involuntary blinking, usually during spells of concentration in reading or driving, or while using computers or smart devices.

Dr Al Yousuf called for the rapid diagnosis of dry eyes through a comprehensive eye examination. She also recommended simple steps to lessen the symptoms of dry eyes such as blinking longer from time to time while reading or using the computer, wearing sunglasses outdoors, avoiding direct air conditioning to the face, using moisturising drops, reducing usage of contact lenses and taking supplements containing essential fatty acids and Omega 3.

A more safer way to detect explosive gas

Mohammed Zafran/[email protected]

Manama

An award winning Bahraini scientist plans

to work with government authorities to have her invention provide a safe way to detect explosive gas.

Smart Gas System (SGS), a technology that uses a robot as well as a mobile application to detect explosive gases was invented by Tasneem Yousif, a young Bahraini scientist.

She was chosen as one of the inventors to represent Bahrain at the 9th International Invention Fair held in Kuwait.

Her invention was awarded the ‘Excellence Scientific Award in Inventions’ recognition from the Kuwait Science Club as well as a silver medal in the overall competition. Now she hopes to work with government authorities such as the Electricity and Water Authority to implement the technology in the Kingdom.

“The smart gas system uses a robot to detect explosive gases. This is an innovative way to replace handheld

sensors and fixed sensors. It makes the process much safer because the person who is controlling the robot is using a smart phone application or a web based system to direct it. It can detect 12 toxic explosive gases,” she said.

She said that the system can prevent disasters, injuries and death. She hopes to work with government authorities and oil and gas companies. She said that her technology could be useful for hotels and homes as well.

She told DT News that she hopes to patent the system for the GCC region and later in other parts of the world.

“I have done the survey with EWA and found that my system can provide considerably more safety than the one they are using now. The robot will allow to cut out the unnecessary safety risk as the employee does not have to be at the dangerous site,” she said.

“I have patented the system for Bahrain and I am going to do it for all of GCC and later the rest of the world. I have already had discussion with the EWA and they have shown interest. I am going to develop the technology further before implementing on a large scale,” she said.

Strong will key to endglobal conflicts: PremierDT News NetworkManama

His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince

Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa yesterday said that success of the international efforts to promote global security and stability requires strong will and concerted efforts to work out solutions for causes of wars and conflicts in many regions in the world.

Addressing the world marking the International Day of Peace, which is observed on September 21, HRH the Premier underlined the need to direct the international community’s efforts towards fostering global peace and security in order to achieve comprehensive development and boost people’s welfare.

He pointed out Bahrain’s keenness, under the leadership of His Majesty the King, to back collective efforts aimed at achieving international peace by honouring its international obligations or hailing all initiatives in this regard.

HRH the Premier asserted that the essence of human co-existence is based on pluralism as well as cultural and civilisational diversity.

He emphasised that all divine religions underline the value of peace and preach tolerance within a framework that preserves dignity for all.

HRH the Prime Minister said the tragedies in some parts of the world resulted in a state of instability and the emergence of tragic phenomena that need to be dealt with radically to stave off an imminent danger to the future of humanity at all levels. He warned of any leniency in handling the real causes of international conflicts, pointing out the repercussions that might engender on countries considering themselves immune. HRH Premier lauded celebrating the

International Day of Peace this year by focusing it on the issue of immigrants and refugees which, he said, has become a surging phenomenon due to the tensions and conflicts in many parts of the world forcing people to flee the places where they lived.

HRH the Prime Minister called to provide more support for the international organisations and the civil society institutions that are concerned with the refugees’ issues to enable them to fulfill their humanitarian mission in preserving the dignity of this category of people who are suffering from the cruelty of displacement and alienation.

Moscow

Stanislav Petrov, a Soviet military officer who is

widely credited with helping prevent a nuclear war with the United States, has died aged 77, his son said yesterday.

Petrov, whose extraordinary story was told in a documentary titled “The Man Who Saved the World”, received several international awards, was honoured at the United Nations and met Hollywood superstars such as Robert De Niro and Matt Damon.

Yet Petrov lived in a small town outside Moscow and died in relative obscurity on May 19, his death making headlines in Russia and abroad only months later when a German friend wrote a blog post about his death.

In September 1983, Petrov was an officer on duty at a secret command centre south of Moscow when an alarm went off signalling that the United States had launched intercontinental ballistic missiles. The officer -- who

had only a few minutes to make a decision and was not sure about the incoming data -- dismissed the warning as a false alarm.

Had he told his commanders of an imminent US nuclear strike, the Soviet leadership -- locked in an arms race with Washington -- might have ordered a retaliatory strike.

Instead the 44-year-old lieutenant colonel reported a system malfunction and an investigation that followed afterwards proved he was right.

‘He simply did his job’Petrov came home only several days later but did not tell his family about what had happened.

“He came home knackered but did not tell us anything,” his son Dmitry said.

Several months later Petrov received an award “for services to the Fatherland” but the incident at the control centre was kept secret for many years.

In 1984, he left the military and settled in the town of Fryazino some 20 kilometres (12 miles) northeast of Moscow.

Petrov’s story only came

to light after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 and over the years he became the subject of numerous media reports in Russia and abroad.

A modest, self-effacing man, Petrov never thought of himself as a hero, said his son.

“My father could not have cared less. He was always surprised that people were making a hero out of him,” he said.

“He simply did his job well,” Petrov’s son said, adding that his father received some hundred letters from Europeans thanking him for

averting the outbreak of a nuclear war.

“The Man Who Saved the World”, a documentary film  directed by Danish filmmaker Peter Anthony and narrated by US actor Kevin Costner, was released in 2014.

Footage of the elderly Petrov is combined with re-enactments of what happened at that secret control centre in 1983.

“I categorically refused to be guilty of starting World War III,” Petrov said in the film. “I felt like I was being led to an execution,” he said of those dramatic moments. (AFP)

Ford to tie up with India’s MahindraNew Delhi

Ford Motor and India’s Mahindra Group have

announced they will work together in a fresh partnership as the US giant looks to boost its presence in one of the world’s fastest growing auto markets.

The two, who parted ways from a tie-up in 2005, will co-operate for three years on a number of areas including electric vehicles and sourcing.

“Ford is committed to India,” said Jim Farley, Ford executive vice president and president of Global Markets in a statement.

“This alliance will allow us to work together to take advantage of the changes coming in the auto industry.”

Most foreign auto makers have struggled in the budget-sensitive Indian market and Ford has a less than three percent market share.

The electric car market is expected to explode as governments around the world, including India and the world’s biggest market China saying they intend to shift completely away from fossil fuelled cars within the next few decades.

Mahindra is the only Indian automaker that makes electric cars, and at a

fraction of the cost of global brands such as Tesla and an agreement would give Ford access to the cheap technology. Mahindra on the other hand will be given access to new designs and markets.

Japan’s Toyota Motor and Suzuki announced plans to work together earlier this year to exchange expertise, while General Motors and Ford are also in various experiments with US ride-sharing giant Uber Technologies.

The announcement marks a U-turn for Ford under new chief executive Jim Hackett after his predecessor  Mark Fields had put the firm’s India

business on review.

Saudi raises $1.87bnin bondissue

Riyadh

Saudi Arabia has raised $1.87 billion in a new

Islamic bond issue as the kingdom bids to finance a budget deficit resulting from low oil prices.

Demand was strong for the third sale of Islamic bonds, known as sukuk, this year with orders exceeding 24 billion riyals ($6.4 billion),

the finance ministry said in a statement cited by the SPA state news agency.

The first two issues were made in April and July and were worth a total of $13.5 billion. The kingdom had also issued conventional domestic and global bonds.

The kingdom has forecast a budget deficit of $53 billion this fiscal year, down slightly

from last year’s shortfall.Riyadh has also withdrawn

more than $230 billion from its fiscal reserves since the end of 2014 to finance the budget deficit. Its reserves now stand at just over $490 billion.

Economic growth in Saudi Arabia is expected to hit 0.1 percent this year, according to the International Monetary Fund. (AFP)

Dubai

Qatar’s stock index came slightly off a five-year

low yesterday as local funds intensified their buying of those shares, as Cairo index rebounded 1.0pc at 20 of the top 30 shares rose.

The Doha index had recorded 11 straight sessions of losses, reflecting a lack of foreign investor confidence in a speedy resolution to the Gulf diplomatic crisis.

Twenty shares rose including Qatar Gas Transport, which added 1.4pc, and 16 others declined, including Qatar Insurance, which lost 2.5pc. It had dropped 2.3pc on Monday after the company said it was closing its Abu Dhabi branch because it had not been able to obtain a licence. In Abu Dhabi,

Dana Gas rose 1.3pc ahead of a London High Court hearing on Monday and Tuesday over the validity of its sukuk. Last week Dana dismissed a proposal from bondholders

for a restructuring of the $700 million Islamic bond.

The main index added 0.3pc. In neighbouring Dubai, the index fell back 0.2pc, weighed down by

profit-taking on some of the previous session’s top gainers.

The Saudi index fell 0.6 per cent as 10 of its 12 banking stocks declined including National Commercial Bank , which lost 1.5pc.

The U.S. Federal Reserve is expected to hold interest rates steady, with investors looking for clues on its anticipated pace of further tightening later this year and next.

In Cairo, the index rebounded 1.0pc as 20 of the top 30 shares rose. Shares of Heliopolis for Housing climbed 4.3pc after the local financial Alborsa News said the firm planned to launch three new projects and management had set a sales target of 1.5 billion Egyptian pounds ($85.2 million) for 2018. The US Senate o v e r w h e l m i n g l y

authorised $700 billion in defence spending Monday, a substantial increase over 2017 funding and nearly five percent more than President Donald Trump had requested.

The National Defence Authorisation Act of 2018 allows for increased spending on new F-35 fighter jets, ships and M1 Abrams tanks, raises military pay by 2.1 percent and authorises nearly $5bn for Afghanistan security forces, including a program integrating women into the country’s national defence.

It also authorises $8.5bn to boost US missile defence -- a full $630 million above Trump’s baseline request -- at a time of heightened tensions

with North Korea over its testing of nuclear devices and ballistic missiles.

The bill provides for

$60bn in war funding known as Overseas Contingency Operations, and boosted military enlistment figures by

7,000.The legislation, one of the

cornerstones of congressional bipartisanship over the decades, passed 89 to 8.

The House of Representatives passed its version in July, and the two chambers will now need to thrash out a compromise bill.

“It keeps faith with our men and women in uniform,” Republican John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said of the bill he shepherded through the chamber.

McCain was quick to point to the increasing number of training accidents within the military, saying the lack of force readiness was a result of ever-tightening budgets that left the army, navy and other branches depleted.

By developing a way to better study a large protein

essential for hearing and finding a truncated version of it, researchers at Oregon State University have taken a step toward gene therapy for deaf patients. While mutations in the protein, known as otoferlin, are linked to severe congenital hearing loss, the research suggests that otoferlin, which is in the cochlea of the inner ear, acts as a calcium-sensitive linker protein. World-leading neuroscientists have launched an ambitious project to answer one of the greatest

mysteries of all time: how the brain decides what to do.The international effort will draw on expertise from

21 labs in the US and Europe to uncover for the first time where, when, and how neurons in the brain take information from the outside world, make sense of it, and work out how to respond.

If the researchers can unravel what happens in detail, it would mark a dramatic leap forward in scientists’ understanding of a process that lies at the heart of life, and which ultimately has implications for intelligence and free will.

“Life is about making decisions,” said Alexandre Pouget, a neuroscientist involved in the project at the University of Geneva. “It’s one decision after another, on every time scale, from the most mundane thing to the most fundamental in your life. It is the essence of what the brain is about.”

Backed with an initial £10m ($14m) from the US-based Simons Foundation and the Wellcome Trust, the endeavour will bring neuroscientists together into a virtual research group called the International Brain Laboratory (IBL). Half of the IBL researchers will perform experiments and the other half will focus on theoretical models of how the brain makes up its mind.

The IBL was born largely out the realisation that many problems in modern neuroscience are too hard for a single lab to crack. But the founding scientists are also frustrated at how research is done today. While many neuroscientists work on the same problems, labs differ in the experiments and data analyses they run, often making it impossible to compare results across labs and build up a confident picture of what is really happening in the brain.

“It happens all the time that we read a paper that gets different results from us, and we won’t know if it’s for deep scientific reasons, or because there are small differences in the way the science is carried out,” said Anne Churchland, a neuroscientist involved in the project at Cold Spring Harbor Lab in New York. “At the moment, each lab has its own way of doing things.”

The IBL hopes to overcome these flaws. Scientists on the project will work on exactly the same problems in precisely the same way. Animal experiments, for example, will use one strain of mouse, and all will be trained, tested and scored in the same way. It is an obvious strategy, but not a common one in science: in any lab, there is a constant urge to tweak experiments to make them better. “Ultimately, the reason it’s worth addressing is in the proverb: ‘alone we go fast, together we go far’,” said Churchland.

The IBL’s results will be analysed with the same software and shared with other members immediately. The openness mirrors the way physicists work at Cern, the particle physics laboratory near Geneva that is home to the Large Hadron Collider. For now, the IBL team includes researchers from UCL, Princeton, Stanford, Columbia, Ecole Normale Paris, and the Champalimaud Centre in Lisbon, but over the 10 to 15-year project, more scientists are expected to join.

Decision-making is a field in itself, so IBL researchers will focus on simple, so-called perceptual decisions: those that involve responding to sights or sounds, for example. In one standard test, scientists will record how neurons fire in mice as they watch faint dots appear on a screen and spin a Lego wheel to indicate if the dots are on the left or the right. The mice make mistakes when the dots are faint, and it is these marginal calls that are most interesting to scientists. (theguardian)

People who are infected with human immunodeficiency

virus and who smoke are far more likely to die from lung cancer than HIV, researchers said Monday.

“Having HIV and using tobacco may together accelerate the development of lung cancer,” warned the report in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine.

Smoking reduces life expectancy among people living with HIV -- and undergoing antiretroviral therapy to keep their disease at bay -- more than HIV itself, it added.

The findings are of particular concern because smoking is

so common among people with HIV. The prevalence of smokers among the population of people with HIV is 40 percent, about twice the rest of the US population.

“Smoking and HIV are a particularly bad combination when it comes to lung cancer,” said lead author Krishna Reddy, a doctor at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

“Smoking rates are extraordinarily high among people with HIV, and both smoking and HIV increase the risk of lung cancer.”

Almost 25 percent of people who adhere well to anti-HIV medications but continue to smoke will die from lung cancer, said the findings. (AFP)

Ear infections in dogsEar infections in dogs are common and most dogs suffer

from this painful condition sometime in their life. Dogs ear canals are L shaped and easily trap moisture or foreign material like grass seeds. That creates the perfect place for bacteria, fungi and ear mites to set up housekeeping.

Head shaking, excessive ear scratching, redness of the ear flaps, slight tilt of the head, one ear being held at a slightly different angle than the other, pungent, yeasty odor emanating from the ears, dark reddish brown buildup of waxy substance around the folds of the ears and deeper within the ear canal are common signs . If your dog is showing any of the signs, it is important to visit your veterinarian as soon as possible, The length of treatment depends on the patient, severity of infection, and any changes to the ear. If there are underlying problems such as thyroid disease or seborrhea, these must also be addressed to clear the infection and reduce the chances of recurrence.

Certain breeds with ears that hang down, like setters, spaniels and retrievers with longer ear flaps provide an internal ear environment that is perfect for the growth of yeast and bacteria. An excess of grain and or sugar in the diet is one of the most common causes of yeast ear infections in dogs. Any dog that swims should have his ears gently dried afterwards, using a soft towel or cotton wool to remove the excess moisture. Parasites such as mites can invade the ear canal and can cause infection.

Once an infection has been cleared, maintaining a healthy ear environment with regular cleaning helps prevent recurrence. Unfortunately, regular cleaning isn’t always enough. Underlying diseases such as allergies and skin disorders must be identified and resolved in order to help avoid future infections.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” star Dakota Johnson has likened fame to an “incessant mosquito noise”.

In an interview to Spain’s Vogue magazine, the star admits fame is “very weird” for

her and slammed the need for people to “judge” each other all the time, reports

femalefirst.co.uk.“It’s like an incessant mosquito

noise. Very weird. People feeling the need not only to judge everyone all the time but also to pronounce themselves on it, it’s extremely boring. A

waste of energy and time,” she said.

Meanwhile, the 27-year-old actress previously revealed she feels as though she “exploited” herself on Instagram.

She said: “There I was and it was making me feel like I was being exploited - only by myself. I was literally exploiting myself. And I felt so raw and vulnerable and it was all my own fault. (IANS)

British star Benedict Cumberbatch leaped to the defence of Jodie Whittaker, who has been cast as the first female Doctor in a series, and said he would be fine if a woman steps into the role of famous

sleuth Sherlock Holmes. The 41-year-old actor, who has been playing Sherlock since 2010,

said gender of the actor does not matter to him if the performance is up to the mark and he is confident that Whittaker will do justice to the role of Doctor.

“(Doctor) It’s an alien. Why can’t it be a woman, why can’t it be any gender? It doesn’t matter to me. I don’t speak as someone

who has the right as a fan to have an incredibly strong opinion. I just speak as someone who wants to see Jodie Whittaker’s

performance as the doctor.” (TOI)

Have you recently purchased something you wanted that’s more of a luxury than a necessity? Today you might feel guilty about it. It may have temporarily strained your budget. Don’t even think about taking it back! Sometimes luxury items can lift the spirits. Payday will be around again before you know it.

Attempts to balance emotions with logic may not succeed today, particularly where family is concerned. Members of your household may be upset, and you might not be able to cheer them up. Perhaps all you can do is leave them alone for a while to think. Only they can understand their feelings and discern the right way to proceed. You might do some writing today, perhaps creative or letters. Whichever it is, you might find that all that comes out are gloomy accounts of whatever’s happening now. This may not reflect your true state of mind. If you can’t come up with anything pleasant to write about, perhaps you’d better wait until later!

A friend may have some outrageous, unworkable ideas for making money. No matter what they involve, you’ll probably start by listening just to be polite and then end up wondering if your friend is still on this planet. This isn’t a good day to get involved in anything risky. If asked, make your excuses. “Risky” is too mild a word for this proposal!

Career matters might be very stressful today. Your generally penetrating mind is clouded by strong feelings about whatever you’re doing and confused by differences of opinion among your colleagues. This could drive you crazy. Relax! The world won’t come to an end if everything you need to do isn’t done today.

Some new concepts involving the sciences that you’re trying to study may be difficult. You might be a little impatient with yourself, viewing this confusion as a symptom of mental dullness. These ideas could just be new to you. Don’t be afraid to ask someone to explain things. There are times when hearing it makes it more understandable than reading it.

Some vivid dreams could shed light on something you’ve been trying to find. This could be a lost object or an obscure piece of information. Whatever it is, you might wake up with some new ideas on where to look for it. Chances are it’s hidden in an obvious place full of similar things. Don’t hesitate because of the unorthodox source of your insight.

A social event could put you in touch with a magnetic woman who has a lot of interesting stories to tell. She probably exaggerates, so don’t take every detail as fact, but you’ll enjoy meeting her anyway. Don’t commit to any proposal that you and she work on a project together. She can be very convincing, but you’ll need to think about it carefully before deciding.

Stress could have you feeling a little out of sorts by the end of the day. You might have been considering going out for the evening, but it might be better if you put off those plans and stay home and rest. Take a walk to a takeout place and get some dinner, then relax with a funny video. This way you’ll able to release all the tension and sleep soundly.

Today you might be trying to do some in-depth research, but don’t be surprised if what you’re looking for proves difficult to find. You could get sidetracked by other interesting subjects related to what you’re doing. Don’t be upset with yourself. Finding what you need won’t be easy. Enjoy the side roads and go back to your search tomorrow.

A decision may need to be made today that requires logic and practicality. You might find that your feelings get in the way. Don’t fight it. Sometimes it’s best to step back and discern why your emotions are interfering. Is there a hidden factor you may not be considering? Do you know all the facts? Consider all contingencies before committing.

Today a charismatic, artistic woman could visit your home. She could have a lot of ideas to discuss, perhaps proposing that you work on a project together. Al-Sagra

Iraqi security forces and paramilitary units

launched a dawn assault yesterday against one of the Islamic State group’s last bastions in the vast western province of Anbar bordering Syria.

The Joint Operations Command, which is coordinating Iraqi security forces battling IS, said an offensive had begun to retake the town of Anna and the nearby village of Al-Rayhanna.

“Infantry units and armour backed by the Hashed al-Shaabi began an

offensive to liberate Anna and Al-Rayhanna from Daesh terrorists,” JOC head General Abdelamir Yarallah said in a statement, using an Arabic name for IS.

A general in the area said the operation was “developing along three axes” involving the army, police and the Hashed al-Shaabi, a paramilitary force composed largely of Iran-trained militias.

The operation was supported by Iraqi army helicopters and warplanes from the US-led coalition battling IS in Iraq and Syria, the general said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

An independent Tanzanian newspaper

has been suspended for two years, a government spokesman said yesterday, accusing the publication of sedition and endangering national security.

The critical Mwanahalisi newspaper was shut after publishing a letter on Monday from a reader containing “insults” against President John Magufuli

and his government, said spokesman Hassan Abbasi.

Abbasi said the paper had received several warnings. The daily has been shuttered on several occasions in the past, for three months in 2008 and then three years between 2012 and 2015.

The offending letter said that Magufuli “claims to be a patriot but questions the patriotism of anyone who opposes him. This is hypocritical.”

“The use of nuclear weap-ons should be unthinkable. But today global anxieties about nuclear weapons are at the highest level since the end of the Cold War.”

Russian officials and Orthodox priests

yesterday unveiled a statue in Moscow of inventor Mikhail Kalashnikov, whose iconic AK-47 assault rifle has claimed countless lives worldwide.

A priest sprinkled holy water on the seven-metre tall statue of Kalashnikov gripping his deadly creation, which will now loom over motorists from a traffic island in one of the sprawling capital’s central thoroughfares.

Culture minister Vladimir Medinsky praised the inventor and called the rifle -- which has been reproduced an estimated 100 million times worldwide -- a “cultural brand for Russia.”

Kalashnikov had “the best traits of a Russian: an extraordinary natural gift, simplicity, integrity,” Medinsky said.

Born in a Siberian village in 1919, Mikhail Kalashnikov died in December 2013 in Izhevsk, the capital of the Russian republic of Udmurtia, where he lived.

New York

A former Fox Business Network guest

commentator has accused a prominent host of rape, the latest in a series of sexual misconduct allegations to rock the broadcaster.

Scottie Nell Hughes, 37, filed a civil lawsuit Monday in federal court in New York against presenter Charles Payne and Fox News, according to documents reviewed by AFP.

According to Hughes’ lawsuit, Payne, who hosts “Making Money” on the Fox Business channel, raped her

in a hotel room in July 2013. But she maintained a sexual relationship with him for almost two years, believing that this would give her more opportunities to appear on the air.

During that time she appeared regularly not only on Payne’s programme but also on other Fox Business programmes and on Fox News, both subsidiaries of 21st Century Fox.

After ending the relationship in June 2015, Hughes said her appearances rapidly decreased, with her final appearance in March

2016.She said she learned from

Fox employees that they had been instructed to stop booking her.

The media company also compromised her chances of securing a position in the new Trump administration, Hughes alleged.

In June, Hughes’ manager contacted the law firm investigating a culture of sexual misconduct at Fox, which came after several women accused male journalists and executives of harassment and other misdeeds. (AFP)

A former German intelligence agent who

was also an ex-gay porn actor was yesterday given a one-year suspended sentence for attempting to share state secrets while pretending to be a jihadist online.

The 52-year-old named as Roque M., made headlines when he was arrested last November in what initially appeared to be a case of an Islamist mole at work in Germany’s domestic spy agency.

But he was freed in July after prosecutors dropped most of the charges, finding no evidence of an attack plot or ties to Islamist groups.

He told the court that he

pretended to be a jihadist planning an attack in online chatrooms because he was bored.

“I never met with any

Islamists. I would never do that. The whole thing was like a game,” the suspect said at the start of his trial in the western city of Duesseldorf.

Suu Kyi rejects criticism over RohingyaNaypyidaw

Aung San Suu Kyi pledged yesterday to hold rights

violators to account over the Rohingya crisis but refused to blame Myanmar’s army, as the UN chief demanded an end to the military campaign and a better deal for the Muslim minority.

In an address timed to pre-empt censure at the UN General Assembly in New York -- delivered entirely in English and aimed squarely at an international audience -- she called for patience and understanding of the crisis which has driven some 421,000 Rohingya

out of her mainly Buddhist country.

The Nobel peace laureate vowed to resettle some refugees but offered no solutions to halt what the UN calls army-led “ethnic cleansing” in Rakhine state, where soldiers are accused of burning Rohingya out of their homes.

Amnesty International said Suu Kyi was “burying her head in the sand” over documented army abuses and claims of rape, murder and the systematic clearing of scores of villages.

At the General Assembly, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres joined the

international outcry.“The authorities in

Myanmar must end the military operations and allow unhindered humanitarian access,” Guterres told the assembly’s opening. “They must also address the grievances of the Rohingya, whose status has been left unresolved for far too long.”

Supporters and observers say the 72-year-old Suu Kyi lacks the authority to rein in the military, which ran the country for 50 years and only recently ceded limited powers to her civilian government. Philippines’ Duterte facing ‘Hunger Games’ protestsManila

Critics of Philippine President Rodrigo

Duterte have adopted the three-finger salute from the hit “Hunger Games” films as a sign of resistance against his rule and drug war killings.

The sign is in contrast to Duterte’s own iconic gesture, a clenched fist raised at or above eye level that is immensely popular with his support but which opponents have likened to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler’s hand salute.

Opposition lawmakers and other members of a new anti-Duterte coalition performed the Hunger Games salute in unison on Monday while announcing protests on Thursday against what they said was his “path filled with violence, contempt for law and hate”.

“Yes, we adopted the three-finger salute to signify resistance, same as that of the Hunger Games trilogy,”

House of Representatives member Gary Alejano said.

“It resonates with many young people,” said Emman Hizon, chief of staff of opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros, another of those who made the three-finger salute.

Used by the lead character Katniss Everdeen in the

Hunger Games series, the salute is portrayed as a symbol of resistance in a dystopian future where youths are forced to engage in annual fight-to-the-death combat.

The gesture has since been adopted by pro-democracy protesters in military junta-ruled Thailand. Thai protesters have been arrested for flashing

the salute.A pro-Duterte blogger

known as “Thinking Pinoy” ridiculed the opposition’s Hunger Games salute, writing in a Facebook post they were like “girl scouts”.

Hand signs are powerful political symbols in the Philippines, a riotous democracy with a

bloodstained history of military dictatorship.

A generation ago, activists used the “L” hand sign to show opposition to the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos, toppled in a bloodless “People Power” revolution in 1986.

Supporters of Marcos, who was accused of massive corruption and of killing, jailing and torturing dissidents during a 20-year rule, had countered with his “V for victory” sign.

Apart from anger over the drug war, in which police have reported killing more than 3,800 suspects, critics also allege Duterte is imposing a form authoritarian rule that could lead to another dictatorship.

They point to his support of the Marcos family, as well as efforts by his allies in Congress to impeach the Supreme Court chief justice and defund the Commission on Human Rights. (AFP)

‘Pakistan Girl’ aim at abuse and corruptionIslamabad

Pakistan’s newest female superhero has vowed

to battle venal officials and protect battered women, as her creator tries to inspire the next generation to fight injustice in a deeply patriarchal society.

The new “Pakistan Girl” comic series is based on Sarah, a normal teenager with a pet cat who discovers she has superhuman powers after waking from a coma caused by a blast in her village.

Donning a green cape, Pakistan’s national colour, the protagonist whips a man beating a woman in a market and saves a young girl taken hostage by a bribe-seeking police officer in the series’ first comic book released this summer.

The creator of the English-language comic says he hopes the superhero will give young girls across Pakistan a role model and embolden them to fight corruption and violence in a country where crime is rife in major cities and corruption is the norm.

“There’s a huge shortage of female role models and superheroes in the mainstream media here,” author Hassan Siddiqui.

WWI German submarine wreck found off BelgiumBrussels

Divers have found a well preserved wreck of a

German submarine sunk during World War I in the North Sea which may have the bodies of its crew still on board, Belgian officials said yesterday.

A diver who has explored the wreck, lying in 30 metres (100 feet) of water off the port of Ostend, said the good

condition of the submarine suggested the remains of its 23 crew could still be inside.

It is the 11th German submarine from the 1914-18 war to be found in Belgian waters and the best-preserved example to date, Thomas Termote, a diver and expert in marine archaeology who found the wreck this summer, said.

“We thought that all the big wrecks had already been discovered so this was a total surprise,” Termote said.

Its exact location is being kept secret to deter treasure-hunters.

He said the wreck -- a UB-II type torpedo armed boat -- was 27 metres (yards) long with the rear end partly detached.

“The submarine is very

intact, everything is still closed -- that’s what he (Termote) saw during his first visit this summer,” Jan Mees, head of the Flanders Marine Institute said.

The submarine would have had 22 crew and a commander on board, West Flanders provincial governor Carl Decaluwe told De Standaard newspaper.

Madrid

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane believes the harsh treatment meted

out to Gareth Bale by his own fans at the Santiago Bernabeu can push the Welshman to greater heights.

Bale bounced back from jeers as Real opened their Champions League campaign with a 3-0 win over APOEL

Nicosia last week by scoring just his second goal of the season in spectacular fashion in a 3-1 victory at Real Sociedad on Sunday.

“It is part of a player’s career, but at times it is good to note that you are not doing things well,” said Zidane on Tuesday ahead of the Spanish champions’ La Liga clash with Real Betis on Wednesday.

“I am not speaking just about Gareth, but in general. It happened to me and I think it is good because you want to react and do better in the next game.”

Zidane has consistently pleaded for patience with Bale, who missed four months of last season through injury, and failed to win his place back in the side for the Champions League final in June.

And despite a full pre-season, Zidane believes it is still some time before Bale will hit top form again.

“I have always said we need to have patience with him,” added the Frenchman.

“We know how good he is if he is completely fit, but he will need time and we will see that.

“It will still take more time to see the best

of Gareth, but he is already doing very well.” (AFP)

Bergen, Norway

Chris Froome has a chance to end his best ever season

on yet another high when he tackles the hilly world time-trial championships course in Bergen today. A punishing final 3.4km climb on the 31km course with gradients reaching 10 percent will favour specialist climbers like Froome over the freight-train time-trialists like four-time world champion Tony Martin.

Many people believe the climb will almost certainly rule out the more regular powerhouse racers against the clock leaving Froome, Giro d’Italia champion Tom Dumoulin, Australia’s Rohan Dennis and Ilnur Zakarin of Russia to battle for honours.

German Martin, for one, is angry that his title defence has been compromised.

“The finale of the ‘parcours’ (course) of the individual time-trial is way too hard for m e , ” s a i d t h e

32-year-old, winner in 2011, 2012, 2013 and last year.

“I’ll be the outgoing world champion and so I’ll still give it everything and I’ll fight hard but I know I’ve got very little chance of success.”

The course should suit Dumoulin and Froome, the silver and bronze medallists at last year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, who are both world class time-trialists as well as strong climbers.

Froome has already enjoyed an incredible year, winning the Tour

de France for the fourth time and Vuelta a Espana for

the first time.The only Grand

Tour he missed out on was the Giro,

won by Dumoulin.But Froome’s

attention has been diverted from his final

race of 2017 to questions about his nationality.

Rio Ferdinand launches boxing careerLondon

Former England captain Rio Ferdinand said yesterday he

is launching a new career as a professional boxer two years after retiring from football as a way of channelling his anger.

The 38-year-old former Manchester United star, who quit football in May 2015, is taking part in online betting firm Betfair’s “Defender to Contender” project.

“I’ve been through quite a few things in my life,” Ferdinand told reporters in London.

“This is a way of trying to channel that aggression, that anger sometimes, into

something I can be really focused on.

“I’ve probably been searching for that since I retired. I miss that competitive edge. It’s something for me to focus on after the last couple of years.”

He will compete at cruiserweight and be trained by former world champion Richie Woodhall.

The ex-West Ham, Leeds, Manchester United and QPR defender, who currently works as a pundit with BT Sport and the BBC, said in a promotional video: “I’ve won (football) titles but now I’m in it for a belt.”

But both Ferdinand and

Woodhall recognise the former Manchester United centre-back is not guaranteed a professional licence by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC).

“I’ve got the utmost respect for the boxing fraternity and I’m not saying I’m going to be a world champion,” Ferdinand said.

“I’m saying there are loads of hurdles to get over and I’m going to meet them head on.” “I’m not going into this without thinking about the dangers,” he added. “I don’t look at this as a circus. I’m not trying to disrespect anyone. I’m taking it seriously.”

Ferdinand’s plans could yet be stymied if the British board rejects any potential application for a licence.

Woodhall, 49, said: “That’s the biggest hurdle. He’ll go through a 10-12 week training period to improve his technique, then I want him to spar. “The board are going to want to see him, and actually see him perform. We’ll be arranging that.” (AFP)

Jumana Mohammed missed out on adding to Bahrain’s

medal tally yesterday in the Fifth Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan after losing 17-10 to Kirstie Elaine Alora of the Phillipines in the women’s taekwondo quarter finals under-73kg category.

On the inaugural day of taekwondo, Jumana showed some outstanding technic. The 18 year-old Bahraini started her medal quest at the Taekwondo DanceSport Arena after defeating Thai opponent Kanjana Sukeewas of Thailand in the Round of 16, who was disqualified for committing so many illegal kicks and getting warnings and deduction penalties from the judges.

In the quarter finals, Jumana took on Alora and looked for a final four place which would have granted her at least a bronze medal.

She put up a brave show and was level at 6-6 after the first round, but lost the second

round 5-0 to her much more experienced opponent and despite a gusty performance in the third round went down 6-4.

Bahrain remain on two medals thanks to Ali Monfaradi and Ahmed Shebeeb, who took the men’s under-77kg gold and bronze medals, respectively on Monday.

The taekwondo bouts were closely followed by Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation president and Bahrain chef de mission Shaikh Faisal bin Rashid Al Khalifa, Bahrain Olympic Committee general secretary Abudlrahman Askar and other delegation officials.

Taekwondo action continues today when Juwana Mohammed, the younger sister of Jumana, will start her campaign against Nguyen Ha of Vietnam in a Round of 16 fight round fight in the under-62kg weight category.

Bahrain’s third team member Walaa Al Doseri heads into her opening women’s under-57-kg fight tomorrow when she clashes with Chimi Dolma of Bhutan.

The trio of Bahrainis are coached by Tawfeeq Nuwaiser of Jordan, who earlier had described the event as a

golden opportunity for his young athletes to acquire more experience, improve their skills and boost their

rating globally.Bahrain’s only entrant to

Bairstow’s maiden century sets up victory Manchester

England opener Jonny Bairstow’s maiden one-day

international century ensured West Indies suffered a seven-wicket defeat at Old Trafford yesterday that meant they could no longer gain direct entry into the 2019 World Cup.

West Indies, the 1975 and 1979 World Cup champions had to win this five-match series 5-0, or 4-0 with a tie or no result, to avoid the indignity of going through qualifying for the next edition in England in two years’ time.

But Bairstow’s 100 not out saw England easily chase down a meagre target of 205 in a match reduced to 42 overs per side by a wet outfield as the hosts went 1-0 up with 67 balls to spare. West Indies struggled to 204 for nine after a promising opening stand of 45 in 5.3 overs between Chris

Gayle (37) and Evin Lewis (11).Ben Stokes returned figures

of three for 43 with only
