President’sthoughts

by Tammy Rich StimsonIllinois PHCC President

Remember when you were a kid and it seemed like forever until your birthday, until it was Christmas again, or until you got to go on that great family vacation everyone was looking forward to? Well those days seemed to move at a snail’s pace. As we get older, unfortunately time seems to fly by. Believe it or not, my year is drawing to a close and these are my final thoughts to you. Next up – Bill Todd. I hope you make him feel as welcome as you have me.

Even though my term as IL PHCC president is ending, it does not mean my involvement will. I will still hold a board position for another year and plan to continue to actively support this industry for many years to come. Speaking of the board, I would like to send out a great big THANK YOU to my E-Board. President Elect Bill Todd sits quietly beside me at each meeting but let me tell you, when Bill does speak up his thoughts and ideas are great. Thanks Bill! Treasurer Steve Jany is on round two. The wisdom he shares has been invaluable. Thanks Steve! Last but not least, President Emeritus Rob Page. Rob is another soft spoken guy but his knowledge of business and the industry is irreplaceable. Thanks Rob!

Along with the E-Board I would also like to thank all of the great men that sit on the IL PHCC Board of Directors. They give their valuable time to share their industry and business knowledge with others. They are the great guiding force behind the IL PHCC Association. Thank you one and all! Thank you also goes out to Terry McCarthy for nominating me for this position. It has been very rewarding! I would be remiss if I didn’t thank one of the most important and influential individuals in the P-H-C Industry – Bev Potts. Bev makes being president an almost effortless

job. Thank you Bev!

Unfortunately, I will not be able to personally thank one of our long time board of director members, Danny Miller. Danny passed away April 19, 2013. Danny’s presence on the board will be hard to replace, his shoes hard to fill. He will be greatly missed. Meeting adjourned Danny.

I have thoroughly enjoyed traveling around the state this past year. Thank you to the various local associations for inviting me to your functions, to all of the great people that introduced themselves, and to all who serve this industry.

Prior to relinquishing my position, I have the privilege of presiding over the 120th Annual Illinois PHCC Convention. Join me on June 13th, 14th & 15th at the Marriott in Normal so you and your business can “Soar to New Heights”. Find the registration material sent to you last month or in this issue of the magazine and register today! As always, this year’s convention is packed full of great education, plenty of networking opportunities, great service projects and a whole lot of fun.

Forgot to register by April 30th to earn 2 extra chances to win an iPad? Don’t worry, register by May 17th and attend all convention activities and you could earn as many as 10 chances. All you need is one, right? It’s still better to increase your odds though. As previously mentioned, attending convention has numerous member benefits all rolled into one. You will have the opportunity to attend seminars like the one on Friday afternoon “Aging in Place” or the one on Saturday morning “Solving Your Top Five Fleet Management Problems”, check out the latest products

Page 5: U.S. POSTAGE STANDARD PRESORTED 2013 imp.pdf · Development (CDB) Advisory Board; member of the Industrial Relations Council (IRC) for 4 years, helping to bring labor and management

at the table top show being held from 7am til 2:30pm on Friday, meet new people at Thursday night’s Welcome Event at the Prairie Aviation Museum, and reminisce with old friends during the Saturday evening closing dinner. Let’s not forget about the fun that will be had by one and all at Friday night’s Live & Silent Auction. I hear the auctioneer is fabulous!

Each month I’ve tried to highlight the benefits of PHCC membership. During convention you will have the opportunity to hear from National PHCC Vice President of Member Services Elicia Magruder. Elicia will show us how to get the most out of our membership. Not a member? Not a problem. Register today, receive free convention registration and see how this association can work for you. With all that I’ve said about how PHCC can help you, let’s stop and think for a minute about others. So often we get caught up in work, family life and our own busy schedules that we forget about those in need. At this year’s convention you will have the opportunity to learn about the Midwest Food Bank and how they serve others. Show your support by bringing non-perishable food items and/or monetary donations to help the Midwest Food Bank continue to serve over 1 million dollars of food each month.

The IL PHCC Auxiliary will be hosting activities throughout the weekend as well. You do not have to be a member of the auxiliary to participate, nor do you have to be female. My husband Steve & I are prime examples that the traditional gender boundaries that used to be prevalent between the Association and the Auxiliary no longer exist. Why not join in the fun.

Make this a family weekend and bring your children or grandchildren along. You’ve heard all about my two kids this past year, so why not bring yours along and introduce them to the fun. Kid’s activities will be available both Friday and Saturday and will be planned according to the age of the children attending. Please register your youth today.

Only a few weeks remain to get those scholarship applications in. The deadline for the Auxiliary application is June 1st and the application for the Past

President’s Club Scholarship is also June 1st. You will find both application forms with more specifics in this issue of the magazine.

As you’ve learned over the past year, our kids keep us very busy. This summer will be no exception. Ashton is signed up for three volleyball camps and will also be traveling overseas for three weeks. Trey will be busy playing baseball, attending basketball camp, wrestling camp and church camp. Both will be busy preparing and showing their projects at our county 4H fair in July. New for them this year is their swine project. Ashton and Trey are working with their two cousins, Jacob and Garett, to raise and show ten pigs. Grand Champ is always the goal, but just the experience is worth hours in the classroom. You may be thinking, when do these kids have time to be a kid. Believe me, they still have plenty of time to lay around and get into mischief.

This is my last time to encourage you take the time to thoroughly read through the magazine each month. The nights are finally getting warmer so why not take the magazine, your favorite beverage and head out on your porch or deck. The magazine contains valuable information for you and your business. There’s always great information regarding upcoming events, very important legislative updates, safety checklists and some terrific advertisers. Why not give PHCC a try!

Convention is our one last opportunity to meet. Hope to see you there! May your business, career and personal lives be blessed. Attend the church of your choice.

‘Til we meet again.

Tammy

Danny F. Miller, 65, of Brighton passed away on April 12, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family.

Danny was Vice President at GRP Mechanical in Bethalto for more than 10 years. He was instrumental in securing the HVAC work on more than 12 riverboats built for the gaming industry, sometimes spending weeks in Mississippi in the shipyards, coordinating the work for the owners. A PHCC member for many years, Danny was serving the Illinois PHCC on its Board of Directors and as Membership Chairman. He was also the Executive Director of the Midwest Illinois Mechanical Contractors Association. He was a longtime member of UA Local 553 and served the industry in many capacities: a Pension Trustee for many years; liaison to the UA from MIMCA for over 12 years; Co-chairman of the Apprentice Selection committee; past president, vice president, secretary, and director of MIMCA; Negotiations Committee member; Director on the Illinois Mechanical & Specialty Contractors (IMSCA) board; member of the Capital Development (CDB) Advisory Board; member of the Industrial Relations Council (IRC) for 4 years, helping to bring labor and management closer together by fostering a “Can Do” attitude to get really tough cases resolved. He had more industry and political contacts than entire companies’ customer lists. Danny was also a supporter of the Illinois PHCC Auxiliary and the work of his wife, Barb with that group.

Danny was also very active in his community, quietly helping others and groups that might need a hand. He was also a member of the Hibbard Masonic Lodge No. 246. He was a mentor to many in the industry and his community.

Danny served his country and was a U.S. Navy

Vietnam Veteran.

He is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter, Becky and Marti Phelps of Millstadt, Ill., and two sons, Robert Tidwell of Granite City, and Neal and Chasidy Duvall, of Brighton; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation was held at Targhetta & Wooldridge Funeral Home in Brighton with Masonic Services included. His funeral was on April 16th at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to BJC Hospice or The Food Pantry at St. Paul United Methodist Church.

The Illinois PHCC and Auxiliary express their deepest sympathy to the Miller family. Danny will be greatly missed by his many friends and by his industry.

illinois PhCC Convention

Plumbing and piping industry professionals have the opportunity to learn what is new in the industry, and how to best use that information to improve their businesses, by attending the Illinois PHCC Convention on June 13-15th.

A Four hour continuing eDucation program for licensed plumbers will be offered on Friday, June 14th. Attendees will hear about the proposed updates to the Illinois Plumbing Code, a presentation from the “Get the Lead Out” Consortium, the how to’s of working with copper, and much more.

Following the CEU class, attendees will learn of a new business opportunity. As the American population ages, their housing needs are changing. Many of today’s older citizens are choosing to stay in their homes, rather than move to assisted living facilities. This creates a need for more accessible bathrooms and kitchens to meet their needs. Find out from Accessibility Resource Center, Inc. how your business can become involved in the new and growing market of “Aging in Place”.

A table top proDuct show of industry related vendors will be available all day on Friday.

Saturday morning will begin with “solving Your top Five Fleet ManageMent probleMs” presented by Fleetmatics. The presentation will discuss the top five fleet management challenges faced by business owners, the business implications of these challenges and how GPS tracking technology can help you overcome these challenges. What many fleet owners do not realize is that GPS fleet tracking doesn’t just show you where your vehicles are located. A quality GPS solution gathers a wide variety of information about each vehicle tracked including data on speed, idling,

and engine status. Tips will be given on how to use the data generated by tracking to gain complete understanding of your fleet operations and tell you how to use that information to make your business thrive.

Are you “getting the Most out oF Your phcc MeMbership”? Come listen as Elicia Magruder, Vice President of Member Services of the PHCC National, explains how you can make your membership pay. Find out about new and existing discount programs, tools on the website, and other ways to get the most from your annual investment.

Our educational programming will conclude with “what contractors neeD to Know about the new healthcare law”. How will the new law affect your company? Will you be in compliance in 2014? What changes will you need to make? Find out the answers to these questions and much more during this session facilitated by Brock Martinez.

Make sure you don’t miss these educational opportunities by registering now for the illinois phcc convention.

MidWest food BAnk serves illinois

Citizens

Midwest Food Bank (MFB), a faith-based, non-denominational nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization, was started in 2003 and began by serving about 10 food pantries in McLean County, Illinois. Today they serve approximately 500 organizations across the Midwest. The food given out each month now reaches over 100,000 people as MFB strives to fight hunger. They receive donated food from food manufacturers, distributors, grocers, community and organizational food drives, and from individual donations of food and money. Today, they distribute over $1 million in food each month.

Nearly all contributions go directly towards program expenses by utilizing volunteers. MFB has a small staff, and operations would not be possible without the hundreds of committed volunteers.

It is only through the help of donors and volunteers that Midwest Food Bank is able to reach out to thousands of families in need.

please join us at the illinois phcc convention as we learn more about MFb and how they serve all of illinois. Feel free to bring donations of non-perishable food items and/or monetary donations to help with this great cause.

ProjeCt linus

As part of the upcoming Illinois PHCC Convention in Normal, the Illinois Auxiliary will be conducting a service project to benefit Project Linus.

Project Linus National Headquarters is located in Bloomington, Illinois. National President Carol Babbitt and Vice President Mary Balagna direct and orchestrate the activities of Project Linus chapters located across the United States. Both have been involved with the organization since late 1998 and also maintain a very busy Central Illinois chapter. With chapters in all 50 states, Project Linus continues to grow. Blankets are collected locally and distributed to children in hospitals, shelters, social service agencies, or anywhere that a child might be in need of a big hug.

“I am extremely pleased by the outpouring of support Project Linus has enjoyed.” states Babbitt. “The comfort brought to a child by a Project Linus security blanket should not be underestimated. Thanks to our many blanketeers and our chapter coordinators, millions of children and their families have been given comfort and security at a time when they need it most.”

The volunteers, known as “blanketeers,” provide new, handmade, washable blankets to be given as gifts to seriously ill and traumatized

children, ages 0-18. It is Project Linus’ policy to accept blankets of all sizes. All blanket styles are welcome, including quilts, tied comforters, fleece blankets, crocheted or knitted afghans, and receiving blankets in child-friendly colors. Always remember that blankets must be homemade, washable, free of pins, and come from smoke-free environments due to allergy reasons.

greetings froM the AuxiliAry President First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped at the recent Illinois PHCC Expo. The volunteers play a big part in the success of this event. Signing in over 800 people for the CEU class is a huge task, along with registering Expo attendees and distributing our Ad Book. Thank you also to those who sold (and bought) our Licensed Plumber t-shirts during the Expo. Mark your calendar now for March 21, 2014 and I hope we can count on everyone’s help again next year.

Hopefully the “real” spring will soon be here. So far we have only had an extension of winter. Soon it will be time for our annual Illinois PHCC & Auxiliary Convention. Please plan now to attend this event on June 13-15th at the Marriott Hotel in Normal. National Auxiliary President Sandy Stack will be traveling from the state of Washington to be with us.

Our Convention Chairman Donna Jany has lots of activities planned for us. The convention begins with a visit to the Prairie Air Museum on Thursday evening,

Jim Murray Ad 5.5” x 8.5” (2-’13)

with dinner at CJ’s. On Friday there will be our annual meeting and luncheon, followed by a presentation and collection by the Midwest Food Bank.

Don’t forget our auction on Friday night that helps to raise funds for scholarships and other projects. Bidding will be by live and silent auction with our own Auxiliary past President Steve Stimson as auctioneer.

Our service project this year will be to make blankets for Project Linus. On Saturday morning we will hear from a representative of the Bloomington based organization and then work together to make blankets to be donated.

And remember, you don’t have to be an Auxiliary member to participate in our convention events.

Register now for the convention – you won’t want to miss it. I look forward to seeing everyone in Normal.

Becky Davis, Illinois PHCC Auxiliary President

WhAt foreMAn Are Most AfrAid ofby Mark Breslin

Construction foremen are bad asses. I have talked to thousands of them and most of them could kick my butt. But I know something about them. I know about their Achilles heel. I know what scares them absolutely to death.

It’s not getting fired. It is not having an 8 ton beam fall on their heads. It is not the toughest job with the worst estimate, or an inspector from hell. It is not a vendor no show, mechanical breakdown or bad weather. No, it is worse than all that combined.

Foremen are afraid to look, or feel, weak.

This simple problem of human nature meets macho jobsite meets leadership choices costs contractors millions and millions of dollars each year. In lost production, rework, low morale, safety problems and more. Foreman simply cannot do the right thing if they think it makes them look or feel weak.

As I developed my recent book and training program, The Five Minute Foreman, I quickly found that these fears are widespread, universal and totally understood by everyone. I also found that no one talks about it. They can’t. Because they are (mostly) dudes.

What activities are either inhibited, or eliminated, due to a foreman’s fears of looking or feeling weak?

n Using praise or positive reinforcement to motivate employees. This is only the number one motivator in the workplace, and it is free.

n Taking input from subordinates

n Admitting they made any kind of mistake, or apologizing

n Sincerely thanking people

n Choosing diplomacy or communication over confrontation

n Coaching instead of criticizing

n Using influence instead of authority

n Choosing a professional demeanor over the tough guy attitude

All of these are out of the comfort zone. All of these get better people results. Better people results get better business results. Better business results means more money and more market share.

Many foremen have been raised in a culture that does not inherently value the talent or contributions of the people involved. Insecurity, lack of social or emotional intelligence or improper training all combine to create serious discomfort and leadership failure. But the good news is that nearly every foreman is coachable.

When training them, the most important thing is to focus on the better business outcomes. Taking any approach that looks or sounds like “touchy-feely” is a deal killer. But when you make them focus on the tangible benefits from a business standpoint, the fear diminishes. When you reassure them that they are not giving away power or authority, they adopt a new degree of flexibility. And most importantly when you give them permission to be the high quality people and leaders that they know they should be, instead of a cartoonish role they learned, they break free from the limits of fear. And on the other side of that are the people, business and profit results that benefit everyone.

Page 26: U.S. POSTAGE STANDARD PRESORTED 2013 imp.pdf · Development (CDB) Advisory Board; member of the Industrial Relations Council (IRC) for 4 years, helping to bring labor and management

A few years ago, I interviewed and subsequently hired a woman for a position on the phones at our office. At Telephone Doctor®, our customer service techniques are a condition of employment.

In this particular case, the young lady we interviewed was spectacular. She said the right thing. She looked right. She was the most positive, upbeat, happy individual we’d seen in a long time. We laughed and had a wonderful interview. Her laugh seemed contagious. Her beautiful smile was constant. Her positive mental attitude was perfect. She had faced much adversity in her life and she explained how she handled it with the same great mentality.

Her name was Carol.

I was impressed. After she left I thought about her. “Gee,” I thought to myself, “what a special person this could be for us.” Carol came back a day or so later for the 2nd interview. Again, the same wonderful personality. Her friendliness was so natural, so outgoing you wanted to bottle it. Bingo - Carol was hired on the spot. Everyone I introduced her to was very excited.

She went into our training program with gusto. She learned the Telephone Doctor products quickly and after three or four weeks we put Carol on the phones, to call our clients.

One day, shortly after she was put on the phones, I was walking past her office. I paused to listen to her thinking how great she’d be. Well, I almost fell over. Here was the same lady, but her entire personality had changed. The voice I heard was downbeat; almost depressing. There sure was no smile in her voice. The conversation she had going with a client was stilted and cold. One word answers. It was, to put it mildly, shocking and frankly, embarrassing.

I quickly called Carol into my office. “Carol,” I said, “what happened? When we interviewed you a few weeks ago, you were wonderful. You were so cheerful, so happy, so full of life. Your voice had a personality I wanted to bottle. And now, while I was listening to you, it seemed as though you were an entirely different person. Your voice was down, there was no personality. You seemed cold and unfriendly. What happened?”

“Oh,” she said without missing a beat and very firmly, “when we interviewed - that was different. We’re like friends. That was fun. These are business calls. That’s different.”

“Wrong” I said, “these are our business friends and they need to be treated as such.” I told her if she was going to give me half her personality I’d give her half her pay.

P.S. - Carol doesn’t work here anymore.

Think about your interview. Did you tell the person you interviewed with you loved people? That you’re a “people” person? That you loved to be busy? Did you smile during the interview to impress them? Why be any different to your customers?

Remember, customers are our business friends and deserve the same treatment as that ‘great’ interview you gave.

Don’t be a “Carol.” Be you. Be the person they interviewed. All the time.
